Avatar 10:02pm Dave Mandl:

Evening, friends.
  10:03pm P-90:

And a foetal good evening to you, Dave M.
Avatar 10:04pm Dave Mandl:

Hey, @P-90.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm fleep:

Hey, Dave!

@P-90 Glad you like the 'tar. Been a dolphin on the Internet for 20+ years. You should have a 'tar, too, unless there are security concerns.
Avatar 10:06pm Mdurek:

danger is right!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm pacific standard simon:

And a "trapped in my home by ~2 inches of snow" good evening to you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hullo !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm fleep:

Around here, any wet is good wet.
Avatar 10:10pm Dave Mandl:

Welcome, @fleep, @Mdurek, @pss, RRN63.
Avatar 10:11pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Wow. Where do you live again?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm pacific standard simon:

While awaiting rescue, I am researching the possibility of adopting a certain "Dave M." during the upcoming Marathon.
Avatar 10:12pm Mdurek:

Danke, This one is right up me alley, as the pirates say
Avatar 10:12pm Dave Mandl:

@Mdurek: Happy to help, matey.
  10:13pm JakeGould:

Hello all! Found a cool hasp! My night is doneronnie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm pacific standard simon:

Off the coast of Seattle, Dave.
Avatar 10:15pm Mdurek:

Seattle, love it out there. It's been snowing a tad here in Jersey
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm fleep:

Humans require a lot of upkeep and attention, and some are difficult to train, but you're doing the right thing, pss.
Avatar 10:16pm Droll:

pss, Yours didn't slushify today? Seems mostly melted here in town.
Avatar 10:16pm Dave Mandl:

@JakeGould: Evening.
Yeah, some snow here in J.C., but nothing too hard to deal with.
Avatar 10:17pm Mdurek:

We're getting an old school winter though. Snow background, nice change
Avatar 10:18pm Dave Mandl:

Evening, Mr. Droll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm pacific standard simon:

Actually, Droll, a lot of it did. Fun while it lasted, though.
  10:19pm P-90:

@pss: If you caught 2" in Seattle, you got more than NY-NJ did.
For a change.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm pacific standard simon:

One of the hardest things about caring for humans is finding room to house their music; they seldom carry it inside themselves as dolphins do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm Ike:

The Port Authority is the worst.
  10:27pm P-90:

pss: now wait a sec -- you say "off the coast of Seattle?"

Q: (optional of course) You're not by any chance on Whidbey Island, home of 1/2 of the Firesign Theater (unfortunately down to 1/4 now)?
Avatar 10:28pm Droll:

2" is more likely to shut down Seattle than Fantasy Island, where pss lives. I'm amazed when people interpret "SUV" to mean "goes up hills like a bulldozer". Good YT videos, though!

The PATH station is being closed for all of 2014?!
Avatar 10:28pm Dave Mandl:

@Ike: But still getting even worse!
Avatar 10:29pm Droll:

Complain all you like, but at least you have a rapid transit system to hate. Many cities (including Seattle) are doomed to in-traffic transit systems. Not even a crappy monorail to complain about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm fleep:

@Droll Is Bertha moving again or stuck? We recall using the coastline blight she's replacing on many trips.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm pacific standard simon:

Bainbridge Island, actually. Also, I believe that Phil Austin lives on Fox Island, which means that until Bergman died, 3/4 of the Firesigns lived on Puget Sound islands. Proctor still lives and works somewhere around L.A.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm pacific standard simon:

Bertha seems to have run aground on some scrap iron used in the land fill around Seattle. Chipped some teeth and needs to see the dentist.
Avatar 10:37pm glenn:

this could easily be late era guess who.
Avatar 10:38pm Droll:

fleep, I read they have now determined it's "clogged with dirt", which I think should have been one of the original engineering considerations.

pss, You're neighbors with Bill Frisell! Having lived there, I assure everyone everywhere that Bainbridge Island is (was?) one of the great hidden world-city secrets. pss is very lucky!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm pacific standard simon:

True, Glenn.
Also true, Droll.
Avatar 10:40pm Dave Mandl:

@glenn: I wish.
  10:41pm P-90:

pss: been to Seattle but not the islands, heard from Pete (and David) how beautiful it is. I've heard you refer to Seattle, but when I hear you're "off the coast" my ears prick up...
heard one beauty part about the Sound is that it's sheltered from storms incoming from the Pacific, it's like being inland, or am I wrong

Avatar 10:42pm glenn:

i pretty much heart the guess who. just sayin'.
Avatar 10:42pm Dave Mandl:

Hey, AmEdeo! How you feeling?
  10:42pm P-90:

@amEdeo: tighten your valve, Dude, you're dripping
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm fleep:

We spent about 25 years commuting to Sequim, where the in-laws retired, never stopped in Bainbridge. I assure you Sequim is not one of the hidden gems of the region.
  10:44pm P-90:

@glen: I heart Guess Who too! I guess most folks do
Avatar 10:44pm amEdeo:

  10:45pm tom:

sky children; another good song off of tangerine dream
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm pacific standard simon:

@P-90 - Sort of. We're in the weather shadow of the Olympic Mountain range, which means that cities further down the coast often gets worse weather than we do. But Alaskan winds still visit.
  10:46pm JakeGould:

Tighten your valve? Apparently you lack some particular perversion which today's employer is seeking.
Avatar 10:47pm Droll:

. o O ( Not prog )
  10:47pm JakeGould:

Shut up with the prog hate.
  10:47pm P-90:

pss: "weather shadow" sounds so cool somehow

Droll: agreed, not prog
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- only knew 'Flight from Ashiya' by Kaleidoscope from a Mojo magazine comp. - so Thx !!
  10:49pm JakeGould:

Amadeo’s got pink eye! Amadeo’s got pink eye! Amadeo’s got pink eye! Ha! Ha! Ha! (Seriously, be cool.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm fleep:

@P-90 The rain shadow in Sequim is so acute that settlers had to build irrigation ditches from the mountains, they have an annual Irrigation Festival to celebrate their heritage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm pacific standard simon:

As long as he's not passing around the mono to the other Sunday night/Monday morning DJs -- if you know what I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- get well amEdeo. I am drinking Amedeo Chianti - cheap & cheerful. It is not pink, but red.
  10:51pm P-90:

@RevRab: I guess you're right, somehow remembered that as "Flight from Yeshiva", but that was something else

@amEdeo: get well soon, don't let the haters wear you down
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@P-90: Websearching, apparently it's the name of some early 60s film too...
  10:54pm tom:

tangerine dream by kaleidoscope is on youtube
Avatar 10:54pm amEdeo:

Thanks RRN63, drink that up!!!!
  10:54pm P-90:

documentary about the Air Force base at the Japanese island of Ashiya?
Avatar 10:54pm Droll:

It's a very poor society indeed that doesn't have enough for an annual Irrigation Festival.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm pacific standard simon:

But agreed -- amEdeo should conserve his energies for the Hoof'N'Mouth..
Avatar 10:55pm Dave Mandl:

Amedeo will pull through. He's very sturdy.
Avatar 10:58pm Droll:

You make him sound like a truck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm pacific standard simon:

Wait... Octopus, Decopus... Where's the Dodecapus?!
Avatar 10:59pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: He's sturdier than a truck.
  10:59pm P-90:

@fleep: fascinating, "rain shadow", Irrigation Festival
Is there still much of a Native American presence in your area?
Avatar 10:59pm amEdeo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...actually it might be the 'Room of Percussion' track on that Mojo comp. - I really like it - Thx for YT tip...
  11:03pm P-90:

@amEdeo: Take heart, my friend, and look at the positive side:
In an alternate universe, right now, there's an alternate amEdeo fighting to overcome Hoof'n'Mouth disease in time for a Pink Eye Sinfonia performance, an altogether more daunting task
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm pacific standard simon:

"TRUCKULES" makes you sound like a rejected character in one of those CARS movies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- shades of PJ Harvey here - which is a-okay by me.
...Often say even a toy piano could be a good instrument in the right context - so here's the track to prove it.
  11:04pm JakeGould:

@Droll, “You make him sound like a truck.” That’s how reviewers are no writing reviews. But comparing people to vehicles instead of saying things are “satisfying.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm fleep:

@P-90 In Sequim, the S'Klallam tribe owned the casino. The in-laws are both gone, we live totally in L.A. now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

..full shade of PJ - urm -yeah...
  11:07pm HollyT:

Hi Dave! Sorry I'm so late tuning in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm pacific standard simon:

Heavy Native American presence on the Kitsap peninsula (and Seattle area in general) -- there's a reason for all those goofy-sounding place names.
  11:09pm P-90:

@RevRab: yeah, "Flight from Yeshiva" was on a different Mojo compilation, Ithink the Beastie Boys and Disturbed were included on that one. And Moe (band not stooge)

  11:13pm P-90:

@TRUCKULES: wait: "Truckles" sounds like the rejected "Cars" character. Truckules sounds like some disease that trucks get...
like "motor pox" or something
Avatar 11:14pm Droll:

I've been to Sequim and LA... Once you've seen one Wal-Mart you've seen 'em all. At least traffic is good in Sequim and fireworks are readily available.

Is e-mail really so passe?
Avatar 11:14pm ADM:

Where I come from callin' someone highly evolved is gruntin' words.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm pacific standard simon:

It's true that I often feel "put in my place" by photos of chimps with pet kittens.
  11:16pm P-90:

"modestly evolved"?
Avatar 11:17pm ADM:

We prefer 'naturally selected.'
  11:17pm P-90:

pss: those photos are the WORST, make me feel so inadequate and inferior and there's no escaping them, they're every-goddamn-where
Avatar 11:18pm ADM:

Avatar 11:18pm ADM:

or "Selectively Natural."
  11:19pm P-90:

The FreshSelect? -strike that, it's taken
Avatar 11:19pm Droll:

...more like "Sample and Hold".
Lots of miniature keyboard music tonight.
Avatar 11:20pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Synthesizer joke!
  11:20pm P-90:

"The Somewhat Selected"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm pacific standard simon:

Sorry, I was enjoying this cover of "Wichita Lineman" -- what were you saying?
  11:21pm P-90:

@Dave M: Thumb's-up for "Witchita Lineman"
  11:22pm tahomajohn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm pacific standard simon:

Ah b'lieve we wuz all picked by the ol' Pea Picker! Tennessee Ernie Ford Forever!
Avatar 11:23pm Dave Mandl:

@P-90: I had McGinty & White on my show a couple of years ago. The set was magnificent (and they did that song). Look for it in the archives.
Avatar 11:23pm Dave Mandl:

Hey, @tahoma. Thanks.
Avatar 11:23pm Whooda:

All these perfectly good and expensive electronics and recording devices ant this KMcGinty & White sing to a music box? Good God the world has fallen off the cliff. This abomination will never fly on America's Got Talent.
  11:24pm P-90:

@Dave: missed it. Will locate. Thnx.
wondering what time slot that was
  11:25pm tahomajohn:

Wow. I missed a Wichita Lineman cover? DAMN! I love the MotoGators version. And I love the Glen Campbell version. heh.
Avatar 11:26pm Droll:

Whooda, Add autotune, 4 on the floor beat, and wall-to-wall limiting, and they'd have a shot!
Avatar 11:26pm Dave Mandl:

@P-90: I think I was on 9-midnight at the time. I guess two years ago, maybe three?
Avatar 11:27pm Dave Mandl:

@Whooda: Let a thousand musical gadgets bloom.
  11:27pm P-90:

Oh, 2010, not that long ago. Eager to check it out, thinking mebbe now I heard it, we'll see
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm pacific standard simon:

Wouldn't It Be Nice to hear Brian Wilson cover "Witchita Lineman"?
Avatar 11:27pm Whooda:

I think that Glenn Campbell's post-dementia recordings are better in that they seem to have more honest "soul" invested in them, or at least the one I've heard, Rhinestone Cowboy.
  11:27pm P-90:

pss: inspired!
Avatar 11:28pm Dave Mandl:

Seriously, it was such a good show. I was thrilled to have M & W on.

. o O ( New musical career goal: People to refer to me in the past-tense using the phrase "post-dementia". )
  11:32pm P-90:

@Whooda: That just might have been expertly assembled from SAMPLED music-box sounds, therefore deceptively high tech in disguise, like The Transformers
  11:32pm HollyT:

Love this piece.
  11:33pm P-90:

Holly! there you be
Avatar 11:35pm Whooda:

Yeah, Droll, I really hate to pigeonhole GC in that post-mental-decline category, but how ya' gonna' market this niche without a handle? :)

@P-90 Ah! like a double-agent electronic musical artist...yea, I get it, subtrafuge melodies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm pacific standard simon:

BJ Cole had his own records?
Avatar 11:38pm Droll:

Whooda, No, really, I was referring to myself. Dementia music is a genre, I think I have what it takes.
Avatar 11:39pm Droll:

Apology accepted.
Avatar 11:39pm Whooda:

Hey TRUCKULES, sorry to hear your're parked in the garage. Get betters soon and only accept genuine original equipment replacement parts.
Avatar 11:41pm Whooda:

haha Droll, what with the baby boomers crowding the market, you better find yourself a gimmick to set yourself apart from the 'mad'ning crowd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm pacific standard simon:

Huh, it's true. I remember the name from Kevin Ayers albums, which the Wikipedia entry doesn't mention.
  11:43pm HollyT:

Wow, I dug that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm pacific standard simon:

Whoops, prog intro, cover your ears Droll.
Avatar 11:43pm Droll:

What's wrong with the gimmick that got me to the point where dementia seemed like commercially viable alternative?
Avatar 11:44pm Dave Mandl:

Don't cover your ears. This is great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm fleep:

Kurt Vonnegut. Oh yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm pacific standard simon:

Lotsa bands have William Burroughs reference names, but these guys have Kurt Vonnegut lyrics.
Avatar 11:46pm Dave Mandl:

  11:46pm P-90:

@Whoo: That was a slightly, er, stray(?) reference to good ol' Glen C. Also might be a little raw, this idea that an artist w/some degree of cognitive decline is gonna sing with more "soul". Not criticizing, just bandying ideas about....hrmph
re: "Music-box Wichita"; yeah the idea of 21st century musicians using computerized technology and sophisticated technique to make records that sound like toy insrtuments, or little kids playing tin-and plastic xylophones or kazoos etc.: W.S.Burroughs would love that
Avatar 11:47pm Droll:

This *IS* great -- I totally forgot about Ambrosia! Thanks DM, I'm fixin' to get reacquainted this week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm pacific standard simon:

Didn't Al Stewart do something Vonnegut-based, too? I think my mind is going as well.
  11:48pm P-90:

pss: Meta-Jinx! you posted w/Burroughs' name just as I was typing it....it WAS his birthday this week, wasn't it
Avatar 11:48pm Whooda:

Droll, planning for that coming competition from aging baby boomer crowd. Could be a whole new music cottage industry good that your're getting in on the ground floor.

P-90, I am serious. I heard him sing WL from a recent recording, stripped down (acoustic?) and it was better IMHO than the original. You can hear the vulnerability in his voice that was missing in the original.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm pacific standard simon:

His centenary!
  11:49pm HollyT:

Wow. Ambrosia? Of "How Much I Feel"? fame? Interesting
  11:51pm P-90:

pss: Al Stewart did "Year of the Chronosynclasticinundibulum".
No, sorry that was "Year of the Cat." It was "Sirens of Titan" on Modern times that referred to Kurt V.
Avatar 11:52pm Dave Mandl:

There used to be a show here on FMU called Chronosynclastic Infundibulum. Early '90s?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm pacific standard simon:

Come to think of it, I don't recall ever hearing about whether Burroughs ever heard Steely Dan's cover of "East St. Louis Toodle-oo" or not.

Ah, thanks, P-90 -- the half-forgotten memory was itching me.
  11:53pm P-90:

take 2: Chrono-synclastic-infundibulum"
  11:53pm tomB:

The singles of the later Ambrosia are one of my guilty pleasures from driving around South Dakota. I was relieved to discover their early 70s chops.
Avatar 11:54pm Dave Mandl:

I don't remember much of theirs beside that song, TBH. But what a great song.
  11:55pm LovecraftDude888:

that's nice, I missed the whole show here...was watching various films...Talented Mr. Ripley being primary one. Sorry Dave will catch next week....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm pacific standard simon:

Oh, this is making me happy.
Avatar 11:56pm Dave Mandl:

@LCD888: That's OK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm Tome:

listening all along just online now great set Dave as always! interesting nostalgia here if one would look > bit.ly...
  11:57pm P-90:

Now you mention it, i vaguely remember that here was a show by that name...Whatever it was, I didn't listen to it much or I'd remember it better...
Avatar 11:58pm Droll:

I say it every week, but it's like getting pick-pocketed every time: 2 hours ain't enough time for Ambrosia and Kaleidoscope.
'Till next week, pot your bed down!
  11:58pm P-90:

@Dave M. It IS a little piercing on the left channel, isn't it

@Dave Mandl: Thanks for another great show, flew by....again.
