Marshall Law? Hendrix laid that down at Woodstock with the Star-Bangled Banner, didn't he?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Jimi's Marshalls were rewired - & fit w/ different speakers (for actually a *clearer* tone) & all - not an 'off the shelf' kinda guy...His name was James Marshall Hendrix - & the amp guy was Jim Marshall - & the photographer Jim Marshall too !!...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...it's WalMartial Law you have to worry about...
  3:52am P-90:

@Rev: thanks for knowing....you don't miss a trick. Jimi's Mashalls had JBL's and EV speakers, "cleaner" than Celestions, but even more importantly, they were fitted with 6550 tubes, completely different from the EL-34"s that give Marshal's their "Marshally" sound. They're actually more like supercharged Fender-style tubes, so his amps weren't characteristically "Marshalls" at all. Just explaining this to someone the other day, an experienced player, it's amazing how many of them still think "69 Plexi Marshall = Hendrix tone".....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- & TY for better details.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...being upsidedown - the string tension & pickup allignment was different - tuned a half-step down - rewound his own pickup wire - on & on...
  3:55am P-90:

Now "WalMartial Law", now that there is some scary shit....

...gonna try & be horizontal again - do w/ my subconscious what you will...
  4:03am P-90:

I used to have a "pseudo-lefty" or "reversed-righty" Strat-style guitar, it was a regular right-handed guitar with a reversed headstock, and man, the tension is strikingly different, you don't want to go back to any regular Fender after that. And I put pickups in with a "reverse-staggered polepiece pattern" that mimics a right-handed strat strung backwards for a lefty, like Jimi. That gets you way way close to Hendrix tone. These modifications were to a Roland "synth" Strat-style guitar, so it had the on-board synthesizer and hexaphonic fuzz stuff.....End of story: guitar stolen

  4:08am marmalade kitty:

Did jimi build his own amp or did someone build it for him?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09am Fuzzy:

@P90: I gather you're right-handed...being an upside-down lefty, my situation is the opposite, sort of -- for a Strat I need a lefty body strung up righty, like this one:

  4:10am P-90:

Is this your guitar?
  4:11am marmalade kitty:

you should know this..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12am Fuzzy:

No, I'm watching it...wondering if that's a decent price or not. There's no indication anywhere that it's an actual Fender Strat. Whaddaya think?
  4:15am P-90:

@MarmKit: These were built in Jim Marshall's shop in London, and the modifications were done by him in stages over time, experimenting and hunting for the best sound, with feedback from Hendrix. Marshall made amps for Townsend, Beck, Page, etc. and all this stuff became the basis of his mass-produced lines of amplifiers.
"Feedback" from Hendrix, get it? "Feedback...." sorry , sleep-deprived..
  4:16am P-90:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21am Fuzzy:

Yes indeed!
  4:23am P-90:

@Fuzzy: If this is what he says it is, it's a good deal, and a great find for you, if you are a lefty looking to get the jJmi tone.
IF it's in the condition he says and is as playable as he says
  4:26am kimster:

Love it!
  4:28am kimster:

I loved wizards of cans as much as you Herweg , nice!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29am ifny:

Hot damn, you're doing great kid. Keep up the good walk.
  4:30am P-90:

Those GFS pick-ups are kind of cheap replacements, which is not necessarily bad, but opinion on them is mixed. He says they are "reverse wound" which typically means that the middle pickup in combination with either of the other two, y,know the "2" and "4" positions, will be humbucking and pretty completely noiseless. Unless he means something else...
He say Fender body, I wouldn't doubt that, but he specifies the after-market replacement neck and parts, so it's not even supposed to be a "Fender" guitar at all, rather an improvement
  4:31am P-90:

@ DR. Herweg: Thanks for playing these tracks instead of the Woody Guthrie tribute.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31am Fuzzy:

@P90: Yeah, it's those ifs I think about. Still undecided; I just bought a $625 Martin DRS1 a couple three months ago. I love cool guitars and all, but I'm just a poor boy at the moment!
  4:33am P-90:

@nananatee: if you're still out there: how's that for imagery?
  4:34am P-90:

DRS-1? don't know it, lemme take a quick look to refresh..
Avatar 4:35am Elisa In Italy:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35am Fuzzy:

@P90: Still, probably not a bad deal if I can get it for $350. And then I'm also looking at these:

Avatar 4:35am Jherweg:

Hey Elisa!
  4:38am P-90:

OH, those are the Mexican-built Road series guitars, supposed to be great for the $ and built to take a lot of use & travel.
If you get the electric and are happy but think the PUPs could be better, you can always upgrade, but you prob won't have to
  4:39am P-90:

@Elisa: Ciao Bella! What the heck time is it there? 09:30 or something?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41am Fuzzy:

Yes, I love the Martin...tried it out at GC, then found a nice one on fleabay and snagged it at a good discount.
Avatar 4:43am Elisa In Italy:

Avatar 4:44am Elisa In Italy:

Avatar 4:45am Elisa In Italy:

  4:46am P-90:

As long as the neck is good and feels right TO YOU, you can't go wrong with a Martin. I got a fancier one, problem with that is, you don't want to take it anywhere...
And: in many years of haunting music stores and attending (and working) guitar shows, I've never seen one of these
Carl's Custom Cigar Box jobs, nor have I read anything about them. Have you actually played/examined on and been impressed? They sound cool
  4:50am P-90:

@ Elisa: It's 10:45? 6 hrs later than here? Oh yeah' we're on EST, "Fall back" and all that.
Everyone needs to sleep but WFMU and guys like Jonathan H. here are worse than amphetamines for keeping you up...

Are you going to a local expat Super Bowl party today? you're near...Venice, is it?
Avatar 4:50am Elisa In Italy:

fantastic Jonathan...I love this...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51am Fuzzy:

@P90: Yeah, I am but a hack, and the Martin is the nicest guitar I have at the moment -- I baby it a bit more than usual.

I asked the Cigarbox maker if he could do lefty models and he said sure, he's done some already. Here he is in a vid:

Avatar 4:53am Elisa In Italy:

No, I hate American football and I only watch Italian soccer during world championships...once every 20 years...sorry to disappoint. Besides not many honest soccer players here in Italy anyway. Soccer business is big and there is some manipulation and rigging going on sometimes...kind of shitty.
  4:56am P-90:

@ Fuzzy: Impressive, the guy seems for real (i.e. obsessed) and he says he"s sold a lot of these. The one he plays in the video sure looks and sounds fine. I gotta check these out myself.

@ J.Herweg: Ossining = groovy, man! perfect for this time of night
  4:58am P-90:

@Elisa: Yeah, I've heard how corrupted the Footies biz is in Europe. Who has strong teams this year?
Avatar 4:58am Elisa In Italy:

Actually, Jonathan I have been an anti-war activist for many years. I have been studying to try and get my degree in Electrical Engineering to get into alternative energy. Currently, I'm promoting a solar energy device that works better than photo voltaic system.

Hi Elisa, bye Elisa :)
  5:07am P-90:

Elisa: sounds molto intriguing. But: the page is vague about:
1. the collector. Who builds it, why is it suited for use with this ball refelector, how is it different from usual solar cells? if at all?
2. The tracking system, how does it work, is it reliable, cost-efficient to broduce, etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08am Fuzzy:

Avatar 5:11am Elisa In Italy:

@P-90 The builder or inventor is German architect Andre Broessel. It is different because it "catches" the diffused light at different angles...
Avatar 5:11am Elisa In Italy:

Wait...I didn't go yet!
Avatar 5:13am Elisa In Italy:

The aesthetically pleasing transparent sphere generator not only is a simple and effective way use of creating solar energy it is currently being poo-pooed by the photo voltaic industry because the concept is so simple and efficient that it puts other solar panel companies to shame.
Avatar 5:14am coelacanth:

Hello Jonathan & everyone. I've just been here since Fumio, but the sound is quite what i'd choose right now. Thank you!
I'm enjoying this guitar talk.
And Mr.Herweg i've always been far more "active" than most people, but no where near active enough, alas.
...Sometimes staying alive & healthy is a full time job.
...But i appreciate your consciousness wake-up call!
  5:16am P-90:

Si, but the design shows that it "tracks" the precession of the sun by turning on two axes? What kind of drive does that use, and how is it properly synched to the sun's path?
Or: do you mean that the ball does a good enough job at catching the sun from a fixed position that it doesn't move? Those two axes of movement allow for adjustment to an optimal fixed position?
  5:18am P-90:

And again, the webpage is vague about the collector. It is a kind of photovoltaic cell? or non?
  5:20am P-90:

Yo, @coel, my man. you missed Rev Rabbit, he was awake for about two and a half minutes.

Avatar 5:35am Elisa In Italy:

@P-90: I got this from THE DESIGN BOOM article online: "the unit comes with a modular collector system that charges and stores energy both night and day. by reducing the silicon cell area to 25% with a transparent liquid filled sphere point focusing concentrator, the collector module can be expanded with a stirling engine to generate surplus electricity."
