Options January 30, 2014: Billy Joel Special - Talking w/Fans ... Playing the Hits

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop‑up player!

Artist Track Album Label Year Format Comments Approx. start time
The Monday before this show aired, I didn't have any concept of wanted I wanted to do with it. That morning, I was listening to talk radio in NYC and they were talking about Billy Joel's return to Madison Square Garden. That very night would see Billy Joel's first in a series of once-a-month concerts he will stage there in the upcoming year. Honestly, (parden the pun) I've never been a huge Billy Joel fan. For one reason or another his music just hasn't been my thing. But for plenty of people, he is "the" thing. It occurred to me that it might be fun to tap into the pre-concert energy of the show with fans waiting to go through the gates. I really didn't know what to expect. It was interesting to see how it unfolded. People came from the city, but they were also coming into Penn Station on the train from Long Island. It was touching to talk to the Islanders. Their reverence and loyalty to Billy Joel were plain to see. There were people from Jersey and NYC and Connectticut. Probably from everywhere, really, for all these years later, despite the comings and goings of musical fads and trends, the man still stands and he packs them in. Old Billy. The boxer. In the ring to take another swing. I knew that by the end of the experience, it would help me to better understand something and someone I've sometimes purposely walled-out. What the heck. I welcome him in now, and I hope you'll follow suit.

An Interview with Steve outside Madison Square Garden
I won't notate each time a new song enters in the background. Most of the background music (not all) involved me digitally looping sections of some Billy Joel (I'm going to refer to him as BJ from here on out to save time) songs and looping them. This show I would have to say was "DigiLog. A lot of cassette, microcassette, and laptop mixed together. Kind of time consuming, but it's fun to do.

Hello Al! david!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Matt from Springfield:

Hi Clay and Pigeonnaires!
Avatar 6:06pm Clay Pigeon:

Matt is back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm dale:

billy was great until he started aping mick jagger and frankie valli just to get airplay
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Matt from Springfield:

Remember that Ken has dared Fabio to perform "Captain Jack" at a Hoof & Mouth! Let's INSIST on it, people!! :)

Avatar 6:07pm Night Al:

I was a stagehand for Billy Joel here in Tampa on January 17th. Great show! I watched from stage left on a road case. Built the video wall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Matt from Springfield:

@Clay: Now you know I'm never *really* gone to begin with...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm YETI BOB:

Did you hear the episode of "Shut Up Weirdo" where the question was: "Who is the worst musician ever?"?

I'll let y'all guess what the answer was ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Matt from Springfield:

@Night Al: All and all you're just a...nother builder of a video wall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm dale:

where else would we be during the TNP clay?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm dale:

hope you have some of his first metal band tuneage on tap
Avatar 6:09pm Night Al:

Clay and Matt ... good to touch base with you.
Avatar 6:09pm Clay Pigeon:

we need some TNP stickers, dale. like the STP ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Marcel M:

Damn I rushed home to catch a show about Billy Joel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Matt from Springfield:

@Yeti: Although FMU fans have a pretty open dislike of Billy Joel in particular--that's why Clay is featuring a show about it! Remember that when Clay plays the Beatles, he plays cuts like "Blue Jay Way" and "Yes It Is"! ;)
Avatar 6:10pm Clay Pigeon:

glad you're here, marcel!
  6:10pm oh my god:

An episode full of the most delusional music fans on earth. Honestly. Billy Joel sucks. Most overrated overplayed …
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Matt from Springfield:

So did I Marcel! But it makes all those accidents I got into on the way all the more appropriate/and ironic...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm YETI BOB:

@Matt from Springfied: Yeah, I get it :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm YETI BOB:

@Matt: And what's wrong with "Blue Jay Way"? I love that song. (Ever hear Colin Newman's twisted version?)
Avatar 6:11pm Clay Pigeon:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm dale:

heh TNP.- buffalo had a great club called the continental in the 70s and 80s. kind of a mini danceteria, bands downstairs, dancing upstairs...lot of great punk bands played there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Marcel M:

@Clay hehehe me too but I'm sad I missed the Fabio banter! Work went late.

i wonder if andy is listening.
Avatar 6:14pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

Yeah, this sort of steals Andy's big chance.
Avatar 6:15pm david_:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm dale:

saw billy at a motorcycle show up in rhinebeck. he likes his bikes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Matt from Springfield:

Huh, surprised "Piano Man" ends the reg show and "You May Be Right" is an encore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Matt from Springfield:

@Yeti: "Blue Jay Way" is pretty good musically, lyrically the verses seem kinda contrived. It IS something George made up as he was waiting for friends to come. Haven't heard Colin Newman's version, though I like the "please don't be long" chorus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Matt from Springfield:

<waves Asian fan to cool off>...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Matt from Springfield:

Speaking of deep voiced 70s soul covers, Isaac Hayes did a great version of Paul McC's "My Love".
Avatar 6:21pm david_:

i had one of those yamaha toy keyboards that played "just the way you are" as a demo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm YETI BOB:

@Matt: Please Don't Belong!
Avatar 6:22pm Night Al:

Billy Joel - Tampa, FL - 1-17-14 - Piano Man

Avatar 6:22pm Clay Pigeon:

i love demo settings, david, especially original music written for the product
Avatar 6:23pm david_:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Matt from Springfield:

@david: I've been searching for a particular Yamaha keyboard demo with online videos lately, and I've discovered more than a few pop songs used as demos. "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" is a Casio toy one, and one common one was apparently a smooth jazz number called "Night Birds", originally by Shakatak. I heard the original of that--Clay would prob DIG it!
Avatar 6:24pm david_:

totally, clay
Avatar 6:24pm Clay Pigeon:

you nailed it david!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Matt from Springfield:

@Yeti: So the kids in the 60s thought! I also don't like to "belong" :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm dale:

alright!!!! atilla! the singer sounds like guy from where - deep purple? sweet?
Avatar 6:26pm david_:

hurricane sandy did a number on some parts of Long Island, too.
Avatar 6:26pm Night Al:

RIP Pete Seeger. A true national treasure.
Avatar 6:27pm Night Al:

He didn't play We Didn't Start The Fire in Tampa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Matt from Springfield:

Pete Seeger! Always a place for him in our memories.
Avatar 6:28pm northguineahills:

For some reason, I don't dislike We Didn't Start the Fire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Matt from Springfield:

Putin is Sochi Minh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm YETI BOB:

Wow, I can't believe that I'm voluntarily listening to some of the worst songs ever made, and I also can't believe how much I'm enjoying it . "SO YOU PLAY YOUR ALBUMS, AND YOU SMOKE YOUR POT". Dear Lord :)
Avatar 6:28pm david_:

post-WWII to end of the Cold War always seemed like an odd chunk of history to carve out, but I guess it makes sense for the song and Joel
Avatar 6:28pm northguineahills:

Have I've been AWOL, or have I've yet to hear a Pete Seeger tribute on WFMU?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Repeating a post I've made before: My high school class selected "Everybody Has A Dream" from Billy Joel for the graduation song. I had not heard that song before and I've not heard it once since then.
Avatar 6:31pm david_:

Is there a West Coast equivalent to regional favorites like Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, Springsteen, etc.? It doesn't seem like there are or could be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Matt from Springfield:

I've thought that "the song 'Vienna' " would be a good Ken/Andy litmus test--Ken would probably name the song by Ultravox ('81), while Andy would definitely name Billy Joel's song from The Stranger ('77).
Avatar 6:31pm Clay Pigeon:

Fleetwood Mac (by then LA), The Eagles?
Avatar 6:32pm Night Al:

I worked the Elton Joel concert here in Tampa back in 2009.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm dale:

clay, did you sneak your tandy recorder into the garden?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Matt from Springfield:

There's the whole "SoCal" 70s scene (Eagles, Jackson Browne, Ronstadt, Waddy, Warren, etc), but probably not for CA as a whole. San Fran traditionally has the Grateful Dead as "their" band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Matt from Springfield:

Wow, were Billy and Elton singing each other's songs on their joint tour?
Avatar 6:33pm Clay Pigeon:

i should have gone, dale. for the event. kinda pricey. . alas ...
Avatar 6:34pm Night Al:

Billy John and Elton Joel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I imagine Seattle has some regional favorites.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Matt from Springfield:

Though originally, they were both William Martin Dwight and Reginald Joel.

@Ken HP: Seattle for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm YETI BOB:

Terrific show Clay. When you get to Anthony's Song, I'm probably going to have a seizure from pure joy.
Avatar 6:36pm david_:

Good points on Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Jackson Browne, though those artists seemed to have more significant East Coast fanbases as opposed to the Joels and Jovis have out West... I could be wrong about that, though...
Avatar 6:36pm Night Al:

Barry Manilow is playing the Tampa Forum tomorrow night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Matt from Springfield:

@Night Al: Tell us if he plays his "Commercial Medley"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Did he name his daughter after his boat? ... or the boat after has daughter? I forget which (or either).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Matt from Springfield:

"WFMU: Say Goodbye To Hollywood"..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Matt from Springfield:

Offhand I would guess the boat was named second.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Matt from Springfield:

Wooooooooo! Pigeon Unplugged "Big Shot"!!
Avatar 6:40pm Night Al:

Met his 32 year old wife Katie at the show. Very friendly.
Avatar 6:40pm david_:

love it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Matt from Springfield:

"The Alexa, along with Joel's other boats, call Sag Harbor, Long Island, home." Well, I guess boats are seriously considered female beings, to those who sail.
Avatar 6:41pm Night Al:

@Matt ... No, he jokingly played the music from The Godfather a couple times though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm YETI BOB:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm YETI BOB:

help , help, help, i can't take it!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Matt from Springfield:

Hmm, interesting. The Godfather had some great music, I'm sure Barry's a fan of it as a musician.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Matt from Springfield:

Any Hackensack residents out here on the Accu?!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm YETI BOB:

Everybody should read "The Sugar-Frosted Nutsack" by Mark Leyner. This song plays an important role.
Avatar 6:45pm david_:

tape turn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Matt from Springfield:

NOOOOOO!!! Where's the Debussy???! Change is scary!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Matt from Springfield:

You should never argue with a Sugar-Frosted Nutsack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm YETI BOB:

www.theawl.com... (excerpt which includes the Anthony's Song reference)
Avatar 6:48pm Night Al:

@ Matt ... I was talking about Billy Joel ... Barry Manilow DID play his commercial medley at last years Forum show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Matt from Springfield:

Ah, gotcha Night Al! :)
Of course Billy would dig the Godfather music, a musician plus being from Long Island! :)

And the Commercial Medley is awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm dale:

interesting she thinks of him and tin pan alley. maybe brill building more so
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Matt from Springfield:

The Brill Building was essentially Tin Pan Alley + a half century.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm dale:

can't argue with joy, can you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm dale:

true matt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Matt from Springfield:

HEY!! I'm having a Tonic-and-Gin right now! Serendipitious!! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm dale:

this makes me think of where everybody knows your name
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Matt from Springfield:

@Clay: Show title idea: "The Billy Showel"
Avatar 6:52pm northguineahills:

My older cousins were from West Milford, NJ, and loved Billy Joel. Maybe that's why I don't dislike him, and like him in some occasions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Matt from Springfield:

@dale: Sometimes, you want to go there...
Avatar 6:53pm Clay Pigeon:

Thanks for listening everyone. I appreciate seeing you in here. Have a great weekend, stay warm, always remember.

Pete Seeger
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm dale:

what's a 'real estate novelist?'
Avatar 6:54pm northguineahills:

...and strangely enough, my Mexi gf likes his stuff from the early 80s and before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Matt from Springfield:

@NGH: Both my parents were listeners of Billy from his early piano days to the present, so that exposure is prob why I don't dislike him either. Some songs are much better than others, but I recognize his good stuff.
Avatar 6:54pm Clay Pigeon:

He is ... a puzzlement.
Avatar 6:55pm Night Al:

There were phone video's on Youtube of the Tampa Joel concert in the days following the concert ... I'm sure there will be Video's from the Madison Square Garden shows also.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Matt from Springfield:

@NGH, again: The movie "Step Brothers" features Horatio Sanz singing for a tribute band that only plays "80s Joel". Some Tom Scharpling fans say that was ripped off a routine with Jon Wurster where he led a tribute band playing only "90s Joel".
Avatar 6:56pm Slim Pickins:

Avatar 6:58pm northguineahills:

@Matt: My gf hates Horatio Sanz, and most things stereotypically Mexican.
Avatar 6:58pm northguineahills:

More Pete!
Avatar 6:58pm david_:

"bells of rhymney" was a pete seeger song too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Matt from Springfield:

@NGH: But I think Horatio does as well--he made fun of the low-intellect "slapstick" Latin comedy on a Weekend Update many years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Matt from Springfield:

From the Bible to Pete's folky version to the Byrds trippy 12-string version, what an evolution of a message! :)
