none of this white middle aged white man playing civil rights music on medieval instruments... do the DOYLE!!!
Avatar 3:25pm chocolate monk:

although i guess Brotzman is beyond middle age and I have to say when we saw him in COpenhagen last year he was really good,, very varied, suprising softness in some of his playing (was just solo)
Avatar 3:27pm Fabio:

Doyle soon come!
Avatar 3:29pm chocolate monk:

one of those "whites" was meant to read "European" btw. and i do like Brotzman,, was just running my cramhole.

twas great. did stallone do a stupid remake?
  3:36pm LovecraftDude888:

WBAI was using the Get Carter "train" theme a few years ago during all the terrorism aftermath coverage and things....was pretty funny to hear that music used on WBAI too
  3:37pm LovecraftDude888:

haven't seen Stallone remake but it's prob. lame. I watched Get Carter new DVD in 2006 or so....so great.
Avatar 3:37pm chocolate monk:

  3:44pm Meadowlark:

I liked that Doyle, partially cause it was kind of melodic.
Avatar 3:44pm BigLankyGeordie:

Howdee sisters and brothers from little 'ol Northern England! ;-)
  3:44pm π-90:

@LcD888: WBAI has been such a total train wreck last few years (like, 10) that I just don't listen any more.
I can't imagine really enjoying the Get Carter remake, or I would have seen it a long time ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm DCE:

well, I've missed most everythin' up til now, but my ears is open from here on out
Avatar 3:47pm BigLankyGeordie:

Get Carter remake? WHAT Get Carter remake? Original was filmed here in Newcastle and now almost NONE of the landmarks in the film exist anymore! They knocked down the, ahem, 'iconic' car park just a couple of years ago. It was a shit pit.
Avatar 3:49pm Cheri Pi:

I gotta get more Doyle, I only have Alabama feeling...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Carmichael:

Alrighty then. Cruisin' the board for some Fab and some failure.
  3:54pm π-90:

@Carmichael: hello and Happy Cheri Pi's Birthday!
I'm "Pi-90" today for the holiday
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Carmichael:

Cheri Birthday?? Congratulations, sending you multiple beersie thoughts!
Avatar 3:57pm Cheri Pi:

Oh you guyses!!!
  3:58pm LovecraftDude888:

WBAI...train wreck..um, yeah, I have to sadly agree with you on that score. So sad. Really a bummer. As for Newcastle and the orig. film...egads that's pretty sad too! I forgot it was filmed
there. I have a good friend she grew up in Newcastle and does not live there any longer but visits on occasion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm fleep:

HBTY Cheri Pi, here's a bowl of fishfingers and custard to celebrate.
  4:00pm Meadowlark:

LoVe the bed music Fabio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm fleep:

KPFK out here is the same way, all the Pacifica stations are self destructing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Mike East:

the only time I listen to WBAI is Sunday evenings for The Golden Age of Radio with Max Shmeed. Other than that, its pretty bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Mike East:

Happy Birphday, CP!
Avatar 4:02pm BigLankyGeordie:

Many Happy Returns Cheri!
  4:02pm LovecraftDude888:

that is awful...what a mess. We need stations like BAI...that sucks. yeah the've gutted anything or anybody good on WBAI the past year or two, it's hideous. I don't even switch it on much anymore
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Stanley:

Here I am.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm rsj:

sorry to hear all that stuff is gone, great imagery/setting. the movie was well shot. stallone remake surely not nearly as good. i had high hopes for italian job, but that was just funny, just that one line about english guys being smarter than they look...
  4:03pm π-90:

@fleep : I'm so sorry to hear that about KPFK. It was always run much better than BAI, though of course subject to constant infighting, "coups" etc. Do they still run their film screenings club for members?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Other birthday people today are Vanessa Redgrave, Boris Spassky, Dick Cheney and Phil Collins.
Avatar 4:05pm BigLankyGeordie:

@rsj Ha ha, well there's no way we can be as daft as we look! ;-)
Avatar 4:05pm Cheri Pi:

No Way! What a great group to share b-days with! It's my Birthday Fabs!!
  4:06pm π-90:

@ Mike E. : Glad that Schmeed is still there, his listeners must kick in some substantial $. Rare treat: I got to type "Schmeed." Twice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Stanley:

Perhaps Fabio can play some Phil Collins to commemorate
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Carmichael:

Or some Dick Cheney.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm rsj:

funny coming from the italian guy in the movie, it was michael caine after all
  4:09pm π-90:

@ Mike: Schmeed was on for years and years on Saturday mornings, after Simon Lokley, a real insistution. May I assume that he's gone?
Schmeed Counter: 04.
  4:10pm LovecraftDude888:

I think all those guys are gone now from BAI...most of them fired or laid off or whatever. Even Hugh Hamilton afternoon show he's been fired I think, too. Awful.
Avatar 4:11pm Fabio:

  4:17pm π-90:

@fleep: Did you ever hear the late Mike Hodel?
There's an ongoing saga now: Mike's brother, retired LAPD detective turned PI, has assembled evidence that their father was the "Black Dahlia" killer. Apparently he was a real scumbag among scumbags in the Golden Age of LA corruption
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Mike East:

@n-90 - I think he also does some early morning show where he plays Gene Shepherd shows, but I'm not certain.

@Ike - a guy that used to work here played Gary Null constantly. That can really get aggravating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm fleep:

@π-90 I recall dipping into Hour 25, but I'm not sure which host. Radio talk in general is not my deal, I'm here for the bleats and squonks.

  4:24pm ¿£:

Is that guy in the back playing a bird?
  4:28pm LovecraftDude888:

I'm not a huge fan of Gary Null, either. I think the Positive Mind is still on..sometimes. Not FT. oh what a mess. And I think they fired whatsherface on Tuesdays.... Blue..the music DJ. Delphine Blue. now she's bluer than blue

My Darling Clementine is a great movie. Wonderful. Byooteeful. A real masterpiece. On a related note, anyone ever see that movie re: John Cassavettes? (A Constant Forge) Really good, really firsthand sources.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm northguineahills:

Ah, Fabio played that Noah Howard tune back in Oct.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm common:

@Meadowlark: I haven't seen that one, but I saw a doc called "I'm Almost Not Crazy" about Cassavettes. Gotta check A Constant Forge.

  5:07pm Meadowlark:

@Common: I'll have to look at I'm Almost not Crazy.
Cassavettes was a revelation for me (once I got past Gloria), truly. Now after seeing this documentary, I'm going to make sure I see all his movies (still missing a few). hey, is this like "nazi music"?

  5:17pm bogus:

Highly recommend it Get Carter with Sir Michael Caine! Get it in the TCM app. Thats where I saw it.
  5:22pm LovecraftDude888:

A Constant Forge is well worth watching...for any film nut...checked Get Carter orig. DVD at library earlier...it has commentary also with Caine and peter S. the cinematog. and others...don't recall watching that, but the DVD looked ok...acceptable print if not great.
  5:24pm LovecraftDude888:

Gloria is not my fave Cassavetes by any means, it's ok. Watched Mikey and Nicky recently, that was also meh...fun but not great. All the straight up solo Cassavetes indie productions are the ones to see....Faces Shadows Killing of a...etc. Woman Under the INfluence....all essential but difficult cinema
  5:25pm LovecraftDude888:

oh Christ...Husbands is a really good one!! that's one I almost recommend over the earlier films to ease into John's stuff. Totally great.
Avatar 5:25pm BigLankyGeordie:

While watching Get Carter, ideal opportunity to practice your Geordie by listening to local actors - in sharp contrast to Michael Caine's horrible cockney patter.
  5:28pm LovecraftDude888:

BLGeordie..do you know this word "fnurrr" my pal Miggy uses it all the time to denote like "nice one" etc.?? that was a new one on me.
  5:29pm LovecraftDude888:

or "fnarr" as alt. usage
Avatar 5:30pm david_:

  5:38pm Meadowlark:

I am studying teh Cockney accent, well I will be one day. I got the CD and booklet. I lurve it.
  5:40pm LovecraftDude888:

my fave bit is Bob Hoskins in Mona Lisa when he's waiting for her at the posh hotel Grosvenor or whatever...and the waiter asks him what he wants Darjeeling...Earl Grey... and Bob exasperated goes "noooo, TEA!"
  5:45pm Meadowlark:

There's a ton of it in "Oliver" the musical...gov.
Avatar 5:45pm Milson:

82% cacao... Scharffen Berger... about as close I can get to taking drugs at work... well, a Vietnamese coffee gets me pretty strung out... am I getting old?
  5:46pm Meadowlark:

There's also quite a bit of it in The Limey, which I love.
Avatar 5:46pm Milson:

Pretty excited to see Andrea Neumann and Bonnie Jones perform next week... a rare opportunity for our fair city.
  5:47pm LovecraftDude888:

I got one of those Viet coffee kits last year...great, but the coffee is pretty strong. And I can't use tons of condensed milk too much sugar. Arghh but it was worth the $
  5:47pm LovecraftDude888:

The Limey I wasn't that big into...but love Terence Stamp! bigtime
Avatar 5:47pm BigLankyGeordie:

@LD888 No haven't come across that in these parts, the catch all term for 'nice one' or 'great' is actually 'canny' here in Geordieland
  5:49pm LovecraftDude888:

haha! Have to use that one on Migs....heehee Another one is "kinnell" have no clue what that means. She's full of weird slang like that..but she's up in Scotland so that might explain some of it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:50pm dale:

what set didja get lovecraft? i was gonna buy a new samsung cuz the old crt i have had a vertical picture collapse. damn interwebs showed me how to resolder the circuit board and now wife says we don't need the new one. have a 1080i in bedroom but watching old set downstairs.

Avatar 5:52pm Milson:

Excellence! Thanks for the memories, Fabio!
  5:53pm π-90:

The Cockney accent is famous for being the toughest regional accent in the English language. Even natives of other parts of London have difficulty learning to speak it convincingly.
The Manchester accent is also a killer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm northguineahills:

Groovy set, Fabio!
  5:54pm LovecraftDude888:

meant to say, The Italian Job is pretty good, too. Billy Bragg I could always understand fine..but Geordie it depends. Scots....good God.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:55pm dale:

i think company that makes vizio makes element. i have a sanyo and the atsc tuner in it SUCKS. had a drtv tuner meant for older sets hooked up to it just to get more channels. defeats the purpose of hi def
Avatar 5:55pm Milson:

Avatar 5:56pm BigLankyGeordie:

Proper Geordie is closer to Norwegian than English, I can't speak for Scots.
  5:56pm LovecraftDude888:

Dale...hehe good Lord. I'm fine with the Element thus far...I don't watch tons of TV..but sometimes, and films etc. a lot. But using this laptop more!
  5:56pm π-90:

That's one of the reasons Connery evolved his own accent to speak in, not just on screen. If he spoke in his native Scots, no one would understand him.
