Lovecraft and Moorcock, I was reading that in my teenage years, decades ago

The weird thing is that I was still into both in my college years, until I read Joyce, and I've never been able to read what I liked before. Watershed event for me
Avatar 9:23am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I'm all about Kerouac - but let's face it - Joyce...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am
fred:

Though I've never tried Lovecraft in English, maybe I should. I also stopped reading books in French and switched to English only at that time
  9:25am
LovecraftDude888:

I still haven't read much Joyce...always daunting to me. Also Dostoevsky somewhat daunting but I appreciate him for sure. Kerouac and the Beats I read tons of years ago for sure.

weird, I just watched this documentary, Death.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am

@RRN63: The only Kerouac book I've read was the dharma bums, and I didn't like his voice. Care to recommend something?
@LovecraftDude888: It took me 20 years to finally read Finnegans Wake cover to cover. I used to pick pages at random. Ulysses was my gateway drug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am
Nate K:

@Vron so did I.
  9:29am
LovecraftDude888:

sometimes it's hard to go back to reading certain authors once you've graduated to higher levels of sophistication that's for sure. Or often it is. I have a heard time these days reading most new horror fiction or Fantasy, most of it I just don't think is that great. It depends. And I rarely re-read HPL though sometimes. Or Arthur machen, worth it....all those guys. The earlier masters are well worth re reading. POe...Machen...Blackwood MR James all those dudes Walter De la Mare. Kerouac...Ginsberg....Burroughs all a whole other animal really. And Burroughs has little to do with the other guys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am
fred:

@Nate: I like mixing/messing things up. I've read Virginia Woolf while listening to Public Enemy
  9:30am

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- always mention I saw the inheritors of Death - Black Francis - & they hit the spot.
...dunno fred - I like his voice, so if you don't - it's all the Vanity of Duluoz really...Say - here's some good early Deetroit Seger I don't know...
  9:34am
Patrick F.:

Can you get things transferred to your branch? I think most do. Also, it is on Netflix if you have that.
  9:34am
LovecraftDude888:

yep, I will order it up soon. I have like 3 other films already in pipeline as usual heehee We have no video shops left here at all that's been the case since 2007 or so
  9:35am
LovecraftDude888:

I did have the mail Netflix for a bit, not right now. I will look into that though
  9:35am
LovecraftDude888:

usually this library orders all that stuff eventually, anyway, but depends. Mine is particularly rich in that regard most of the time. They have all the new Criterion editions and stuff.
  9:38am
LovecraftDude888:

place is like a country club! Though the upscale coffee machine that self grinds is out of order or missing now...very mysterious
  9:39am
Patrick F.:

My library has all kinds of great Criterion stuff too, but it's a total toss-up if the discs are going to be too scratched to use. No idea what people do with those things...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am
fred:

Unfortunately, my local library only has books in French, which I just can't read. But I go to a great bookshop. Expensive but addictive... piles of books with coffee and tea and maple syrup hidden between the stacks (it's a Canadian bookshop)
Avatar 9:40am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...or maybe - try 'Dr. Sax' fred? Fear of Joyce - yeah; they say read it w/ a guide - &/or I think I should just jump in & not worry about all the Levels; you can't let lack of complete understanding ahead of time stop you or you'll never get anywhere - I mean - I'll never be able to transcribe great Jazz solos I hear & speak about it knowledgeably like that - but I'm damn well gonna listen...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am
fred:

it's called Abbey Bookshop, google has some nice pics
  9:42am
LovecraftDude888:

true true RR. go and do itte! As for my library, I find the Criterions are usually in decent shape, but the rest of them, depends, they do replace damaged discs here pretty often. But we have a pretty rich library here, funded well. But I notice they're starting to push the ereaders and devices and tablets now and training people etc.
  9:43am

I'm pretty good at sticking to a budget when I go to the record store. If I only spend 10 or 20 bucks per trip, I can take more trips. The place by me is usually rocking WFMU, so its fun just to go and hang out for a bit.

a record fair is a different story, however. Good luck, your Turnipness.

DC has recovered nicely in recent years. Used to have a fantastic record show in Silver Spring (nearby MD) run by a local legend recordstore owner (RIP) -- The new DC record fair has been going strong a few years and I'm finally gonna make the scene there. Got VISA, strong coffee, and crash-helmet.

For now, diggin' the Gris X2...

oh my! I've never seen a record shop on LI rockin WFMU or any radio....usually just the same bad music over and over. but not always. mainly. NYC might be different sometimes, usually it's in store system previewing stuff,, Kim's in E. Village does that

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am

@RTD: They told me a few times I was allowed to pay by check, an exemption from their cash-only policy. I never agreed, the amount of cash I had saved for these trips was a welcome limit. Those bills are piling up though (not much, but still, they were meant to turn into records, and they're not doing that no matter how loud I yell at them)
