his guitar was so scratched up. crazy.

Always loved this Richie Havens tune. The guitar sounds so rich and full.

- I always think of Roger McGuinn in a documentary saying that in the Greenwich Village basket houses - where their only pay was passing the basket - nobody wanted to follow Richie 'cause there was no money left...Beautiful composition delivered beautiful & strong.

Story-teller man-with-the-beard upstairs holidays v. holidays for actual brave souls who changed the world. Hmm.
  12:50pm LovecraftDude888:

I still have to get a 12-string again to replace the one I had that exploded....I'll order one next month maybe, if I can raise some cash for it. a lefty one of course. Gotta get one!
  12:50pm LovecraftDude888:

I just don't have $2000 for a Guild or etc.
Avatar 12:56pm glenn:

recording king. best acoustic guitar for the money.
Avatar 12:57pm doca:

there's no mistake with piazzolla...
  12:59pm LovecraftDude888:

I see those....I think I can get a cheaper lefty 12 from some of those companies...Seagull...Fender..etc.

Heady guitar talk here, but my baby was a Gibson K-1 mandocello, like this one: www.billsbanjos.com...
  1:00pm drewo:

Happy Monday Irene and listeners. I saw a Second City production in my town the other night and the very talented (on-stage) Music Director was one Tara Trudel. Maybe another musically adept member of your family?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Irene Trudel:

Hi everybody! Sorry I haven't checked in yet. Nice discussion about guitars going on. Didn't have much time to plan today's show, due to The Golden Festival broadcast for TSP this past Saturday. (Hope some of you were able to stick with the show-- a better archive will be up soon.) Yesterday was spent catching up on rest and going to a Paul Motion guitar tribute last night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Mike East:

I'm getting my old Martin Dreadnought fixed up...gonna set me back quite a bit. May have to go on a payment plan.
Avatar 1:10pm glenn:

anyway, l.d., it's much easier to convert a right hand acoustic. all you have to do is replace the nuts.
Avatar 1:10pm glenn:

than an electric, i meant to add.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Irene Trudel:

@drewo, no there's nobody named Tara Trudel in my branch of the family. Possibly she's on of the many Trudels from Canada, who are unrelated.
  1:15pm LovecraftDude888:

Glenn...went through that option years ago...was told it was easier to just buy a LH guitar, then convert righty 12-string, it's too difficult or can be...due to tension on neck and other things. Better to just buy a LH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Mike East:

I say its better to train yourself righty...though maybe you're past that point. :)
  1:20pm LovecraftDude888:

nah that's not happening...been a lefty guitarist since early 80s or whatever a total lefty....learned that way, etc. Only way I feel comfortable. The strength for strumming all left hand, and I have the dexterity for fretting and accuracy with right...I can barely play righty...maybe a bit of rhythm
  1:20pm LovecraftDude888:

plus my fingers and hands are tiny! the little hands of concrete..like EC!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Guido (Cologne):

Left- and right-handedness cannot ereally swapped by training.
There are some recent neuologic expertises.
Avatar 1:27pm glenn:

i'll criticize clapton for the past forty years of crappy music he's made, but i'll never criticize his chops.
  1:28pm LovecraftDude888:

oh yeah., I would imagine so. I'm totally comfy playing lefty so I stuck with that during lessons years ago for sure. These days at least, you can get LH guitars in diff. price ranges so that's not a problem...the only thing annoying with 12string is changing out the whole set o' strings sometimes! arghhh Only thing I don't miss about it.
Avatar 1:30pm earrie:

Neatos from school: Handedness (chirality) is also found in cell biology at the molecular level.
Avatar 1:30pm glenn:

i'm waiting for the "left handed class action law suit" against manufacturers who charge more for left handed products.
  1:31pm LovecraftDude888:

haha yeah. Not enough lefties feel discrim. against anymore I don't think to file one. Esp. guitars, you can get lefties it's just. do you wanna pay $500 or $4000!? half the time.
Avatar 1:31pm doca:

@Irene: who played on that Paul Motian guitar tribute you went?
  1:31pm LovecraftDude888:

and the really cheap ones..I know how bad those can be
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Guido (Cologne):

What makes me puzzeled:
Converting accoustic guitars ... "just the nut"???
What about the oblique position of the bridge?
  1:36pm LovecraftDude888:

yeah usually gotta change out all of that...but I think most electrics it's easier sometimes than acoustics. depends. I wouldn't mess with it on a 12-string unless you have to.
Avatar 1:37pm kat330:

Hello, Irene! Very late to the (new!) keyboard today, but have been listening since the get-go. Sooooo, nice, calming and healing sounds.
Avatar 1:40pm glenn:

hmmmm. most bridge nuts on acoustic giuitars are perpendicular to the neck, although there are some that are oblique.
  1:42pm LovecraftDude888:

I was told at Sam Ash in Queens a while ago that they can convert but usually an extra $150-200 depending on the guitar, and if it's convertible or not. I ended up just getting a Takamine 6 string ac elec. LH instead. I was like, I'll just get a 12 string again later.
  1:42pm LovecraftDude888:

but wait'll I build my 24 string...
Avatar 1:43pm glenn:

l.d. www.youtube.com...
  1:46pm LovecraftDude888:

Glenn...haha someone beat me to it, then. Crazy stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Guido (Cologne):

I used to buy damaged budget Godins and repared them.
And I'm happy with them. (I have two 12-string with altered tuning/stringing.)
.... alright not so many damaged leftie-guitars, still.

Before spendin thousands on trademark factory guitars I'd consider consutance of gutar builder for a custom instrument.
  1:49pm LovecraftDude888:

yeah i just might at that. I recall calling up Ovation about 3 yrs. ago, in CT, and they never called me back, just about ordering a stock Balladeer 12 LH out of factory. No shot. They weren't interested! ah well.
Avatar 1:52pm kat330:

Fender did *very* right by me, and I was actually quite shocked they did. My 45-year-old Guild Mark II, with its lifetime warranty, finally had its bridge pop off. I contacted Guild's new owner -- Fender -- and emailed w/ a rep there. Turned out a guitar place across the river did the reattachment, and it was done all for free. Really nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Irene Trudel:

@doca, I'm playing a bunch of those folks in this current set. the guitar players were Julian Lage, Gilad Hekselman, Nels Cline, Mary Halvorsen, Steve Cardenas, Vic Juris, Ben Monder, Brandon Ross, and Joel Harrison (who arranged the night). Lotta great moments.
  1:53pm LovecraftDude888:

That's amazing, no charge even? Hard to believe.
  1:54pm LovecraftDude888:

I notice you can even get a new cheap Fender Tele LH now for under $300 or less, which is great. A nice LH to beat the heck out of.
Avatar 1:54pm doca:

@Irene; wow, that must have been an awesome tribute
Avatar 1:55pm kat330:

@L-dude: Nope not a penny, not even for the new strings. Considering it was actually a transfer of the warranty, it's nicely amazing.
Avatar 1:56pm glenn:

i built linda manzer's studio. she had all kinds of whacky stuff under construction.
Avatar 1:57pm kat330:

BWIM, a transfer to Guild's new owner not a transfer from another owner to me. It was mine from the start and traveled in moves all around the country with me.
  1:57pm LovecraftDude888:

That's kool, at least Fender is sticking by Guild and all that. I love my Takamine cause it's got the ol' tuner built in etc. So keen!
Avatar 2:00pm kat330:

I scrolled up and saw you mentioned small hands. Yeah, my problem, too, though it hampers my keyboard work equally.
Avatar 2:01pm Davee:

Under the weather today but the music selection is providing much healing . . . thank you Irene
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Mike East:

Yeah, I've got a Martin w/ builtin tuner. love that.
  2:02pm LovecraftDude888:

Kat: yeah that's always been an issue for me, but not massively, just for stretching 5 frets! haha. Good luck. But it means I can play other chords more easily..but barre I still have a bitch with sometimes.
  2:03pm LovecraftDude888:

not on the electrics, I can play barre pretty easily on those
Avatar 2:06pm kat330:

My Epiphone came w/ a (not built in) tuner, but I never use it. As long as there are only 6 strings, it's no big deal.
  2:08pm LovecraftDude888:

oh yeah, true. Well I can't do it by ear so use tuners a lot, esp. for alt. and down tuning...have some Korgs also around.
  2:08pm LovecraftDude888:

actually the Fender Mustang amp i got has a tuner built in anyway!
Avatar 2:15pm kat330:

Looking at Wiener's Flickr photo, the guitar 2nd from the left on the top row is a dead ringer for my Guild.
  2:17pm bloopy:

this is going down rather well on a dark rainy tuesday morning
Avatar 2:18pm kat330:

@bloopy: What part of this great Earth are you in?
  2:21pm LovecraftDude888:

nyce! oof weather supp. to get a bit stroppy again here tomorrow oh joy!
  2:22pm bloopy:

new zealand. it's weird that i am sort of in the future
Avatar 2:22pm kat330:

Sort of indeed. Ah, I've always wanted to visit NZ, rainy or not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Guido (Cologne):

So close to the International Date Line NZ will always be "near first" to celebrate a new day.
Avatar 2:32pm kat330:

@L-Dude: Just added a pic to my profile, lower right, of my instruments (minus a Yamaha keyboard bought after the photo). Hardly Ms. Wiener's array, but still more than I have room for.
  2:36pm LovecraftDude888:

Kool! never played a dulcimer but that sounds like fun too
  2:39pm LovecraftDude888:

I think I saw Jim Campilongo once or twice with The Golden Palominos a couple of years back, now. God time is flying by....oof
Avatar 2:39pm kat330:

Not a dulcimer. It's a 10-stringed Finnish harp (kantele). Once had a dulcimer that I made from a kit, but sold it in some dire straits situation decades ago.
  2:47pm LovecraftDude888:

oh ok, gotcha, looks great. Never owned a dulcimer, would be fun to play with one, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Santos L Halper:

Great stuff Irene; thanks!
Avatar 2:51pm kat330:

@L-dude: Presuming you don't have the namesake for no good reason: Love H.P.'s craft. One of the silly reasons I opted for college in Providence, R.I. was due to his home there, and seeing the capitol dome almost from my dorm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Santos L Halper:

Also enjoyed last week's show w/Weiselman on archive this morning. Nice to have a beautiful day off so i can hear you live!

can always listen to this...thank you Irene!!
  2:55pm LovecraftDude888:

Kat: Yep, I'm actually one of the original 80s onwards HPL nuts and part time "Providence Pal" guys I never lived there, but used to go up there constantly since 1982 or so when I got into HPL and all that stuff. HOoked up with various key folks in the field...S. T. Joshi being the key one. he went to Brown etc. I did some research at John Hay but never attended Brown.

I'm kind of a PT critic in the Horror/Fantasy SF field now and again. I'm not writing a lot right now, but I've had some pro. stuff published the past eight years or so. And amateur press, etc.
  2:56pm LovecraftDude888:

hey, is the new mazzy really good or what? Meant to ask someone.

Thanks for checking in, everybody! I'm gonna have to look Back at your comments-- kind of got past me today. Catch you all next week!
Avatar 2:58pm kat330:

@L-Dude: I only stayed at Brown for a year. I think I chose the wrong reasons for going there early decision. On the horror writing/reviewing, we'll have to catch up on that another time. Interesting.

@Irene: Thanks for this afternoon's lovely music!
  2:58pm LovecraftDude888:

it's a hard job DJing! esp. in this day and age....have to monitor five thousand diff. things/streams etc. and us nuts! haha

Wonderful show, Irene, thank you so much
  2:59pm LovecraftDude888:

Ah, Brown a good school, expensive though!! of course. Very exclusive, etc. But I love Providence and RI still. I used to attend these conventions in Bristol NECON for years...great little Con.
  3:00pm LovecraftDude888:

Kat..yes we will continue the convo. soon! There was an HPL Convention this August past,..but I couldn't attend sadly.
