I'm a little confused. This show will cause apoplexy or alleviate it?

Faye. Enjoyness.
Avatar 9:07pm Faye:

hiya maestroso!! hi Ken! It will alleviate it. Or at least... not cause it. Hi Rabbit!

  9:44pm Ahmad:

That thing where you go to comment on the strange amount of "pinks" bands and realize that one of them you were going to list ends with an "x" instead of a "ks," thereby ruining your comment.
  9:48pm JakeGould:

Hi! So cold out. So cool here! Happy to hear the show!
  9:49pm JakeGould:

I have gotten to the point at my day job where if someone becomes apoplectic I can say, “Why are you being apoplectic?”
Avatar 9:50pm doca:

@Jake: what's your day job?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm Ken From Hyde Park:

At least tonight's show wasn't renamed Hello Chilly-dren.
Avatar 9:51pm nanantatee:

@jakegould nice one, i'm going to use that some time
  9:53pm JakeGould:

My day job is being awesome! What’s yours?
Avatar 9:54pm starring Steve McQueen:

@Jake, your're co-workers will probably reply, "Don't call me apoplectic, call me an ambulance!"
  9:54pm JakeGould:

Faye, I really like this “magic trick” GIF animation. Very nice.
Avatar 9:55pm Faye:

oh thank you Jake & starring Steve McQueen for the nice words about the gif :)
Avatar 9:56pm ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Good evening Faye!
  9:56pm JakeGould:

@WD-40/DuctTape, my co-workers are silent egomaniacs who act out passive aggressively. So I often get a glower. And then weeks later I realize they finally understand the interaction. And then we both go on with our lives.
Avatar 9:57pm doca:

@Jake: my day job is listening to the FMU
  9:59pm JakeGould:

@Doca Nice gig! You probably get paid better than WFMU deejays I bet!
Avatar 10:01pm doca:

At the moment, I'm earning the same fabulous amount of money they make, but I hope soon I'll receive more according to the hardships of the job
  10:02pm JakeGould:

FWIW, I was “freelancing” for about 10 years. Hang in there.
  10:02pm JakeGould:

Faye, nice stuff for a cool night.
Avatar 10:03pm doca:

The show also works in warm weathers, though.
Avatar 10:04pm cows in a big group:

@Jake I've worked in offices and blue collar atmospheres like yours. Funny thing is how each particular group expresses their blind sides. The professionals gloat in whispers and conspire to sabotage while the blue collar's act out in less subtle, physical ways. Life is a non-ending high school experience.
  10:04pm Ahmad:

Ahh funemployment
Avatar 10:05pm doca:

@cows: I will never understand power disputes where there is no real power involved
  10:05pm Ahmad:

Best tape of the year? I think so!
Avatar 10:06pm nanantatee:

it's not so fun if you're not getting that check. wah. brokeness. anyway kids let's not make it a SADurday night y'oure bringin me down yo :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm fleep:

Dominance in any situation is deep rooted biological behavior and no real power is needed (see: oneupsmanship). Who's the alpha, is the question.
Avatar 10:09pm ottovonbqe:

I'm the alpha of this comment board, btw.
Avatar 10:09pm Faye:

no me
  10:10pm JakeGould:

Well, I am not that blue collar & the office-types I work with are not so much stiff. I actually like them & they like me. But I deal with coding and Unix system administration stuff. And you have to be open & straight shooting to be good at this kind of work. Because it’s “invisible” work. But the folks I am with are generally nice but I will get into conflicts of non-techs basically explaining how tech works. And my attitude is there is no power play on my side: This is just how the work gets done. Period. Don’t like what I am saying? Find someone else and then call me later when the think breaks. I’d be happy to clean that up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Alpha particles make me apoplectic.
  10:10pm JakeGould:

Faye is the alpha of this Miffy operation. Period.
Avatar 10:12pm ottovonbqe:

Ha, I am boss of this message board!
Avatar 10:12pm nanantatee:

Faye oh yeah, what up Nick Drake's mom, awesome!!!
  10:12pm JakeGould:

@Doca, people who play the power card in non-power situations… You just have to walk away from that. Just state your case & disengage. Otto, you are nothing but an underling. Now get your shine box!
Avatar 10:12pm doca:

@fleep: I don't like to think this kind of competition has biological reasons, but I have to admit that whatever the "human" situation is, power or the perception of it is involved.
As of work spaces, I always think: why not do your work just fine and leave everyone at peace? As if the work didn't sucked already or had the potential to suck
Avatar 10:13pm South Dakota Sombrero:

@doca It's more of protecting one's ego from injury, than it is about power where real power is absent (I think).

That's why I don't succeed in those situations, because I refuse to "kiss ass" or 'brown nose" to satisfy someones ego demands. it a great skill for success, no argument from me there.

I hear ya' Jake. Maybe youv've taken the Briggs Meyers personality profile? There are distinct personalities and without awareness it is hard to negotiate them all tactfully. I fail, that's MY personality :)
Avatar 10:13pm katie:

hey Faye, do you see a computer cable around there left over from Rob's show? thanks.
Avatar 10:14pm Faye:

hmm katie what kind of computer cable? there are a lot of cables
  10:15pm JakeGould:

@WD-40/DuctTape: I will also say it’s taken me 20+ years to get to this point where I can stand toe-to-toe with those types, walk away & still be employed. I completely understand why people quit their jobs to make artisanal pickles & beer.
Avatar 10:16pm doca:

@SDSombrero: Yes, I don't like it either, but I'm more embarrassed not by chiefs and people in power positions, but when work colleagues work against themselves.
I had the luck to work in a great team where complaints were made loud and not in the back, so when you were upset with something that had the most non-ego fighting aspect to it.
Avatar 10:16pm katie:

sorry, a mac laptop powerr cable. oh and of course, I'm digging the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm fleep:

@doca Humans are animals. Animals have fight or flight reactions built in. The higher intellectual bullshit just masks it. It is the fight or flight reaction that created the Tea Party. Who's the alpha?
Avatar 10:17pm doca:

Avatar 10:17pm Faye:

@katie I found it! put it in rob's mailbox?
Avatar 10:18pm ottovonbqe:

Interesting power play going on here among the WFMU dj's, as if to illustrate the point.
Avatar 10:18pm katie:

you're the best! thanks.. sorry he's such a flakola. yes, just put it in his box when you get a chance.
Avatar 10:18pm doca:

@fleep: Yeah, I don't know, I just don't like to search for human behaviors on animals, like trying to justify it for better or worse. I like to think in cultural terms.
  10:19pm JakeGould:

Faye is so alpha she is not giving up the cable. Whoa! Such power! Wow!
Avatar 10:19pm four cast for injuries:

Life's really short and few people on their deathbed aay, "I wish I had spent more time in the office".
Avatar 10:19pm Faye:

haha no worries katie! I leave stuff at the station way too often
  10:20pm JakeGould:

“WHY NOT LEAVE ANY JOB TO MAKE HOMEMADE BEER?” I can’t live off of the profits of making homemade beer.
  10:20pm Ahmad:

It's so easy to get lost in this album.
  10:20pm JakeGould:

No more work talk! How did people deal with the Snowmageddon? Everyone hoard enough milk? I hope so.
Avatar 10:21pm doca:

@Jake: who's talking about profits when your wealthy will be measured by the circumference of your beer belly?
  10:21pm Ahmad:

She almost sounds like Trish Keenan.
Avatar 10:22pm teeth grits:

@Jake Milk and Bread hording? Are you from down South USA?
Avatar 10:22pm doca:

@Ahmad: Trish fortunately haunts much of the best music right now (:
  10:23pm JakeGould:

I am in NYC. People hoard milk & bread here.
Avatar 10:23pm ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

I would quit and make homemade beer if I knew how. As for the milk hoarding, I stupidly went to Fairway supermarket Thursday night and was trapped in the dairy section because of the swarms of people. I overheard a lady bark at a shelf stocker, "Where's the 1%??? I don't see it! NO that is not the one I WANT, it's PLASTIC and I want a CARTON." Unreal.
  10:23pm Ahmad:

She very much does!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm fleep:

Lactose intolerance!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm Ken From Hyde Park:

My theory is that alfalfa sprouts deter apoplexy.
Avatar 10:25pm nanantatee:

eff dairy and gluten, feelin' queasy just thinking about it.
Avatar 10:26pm doca:

Avatar 10:26pm nanantatee:

@ken i take that in my chlorophyll supplement but i find thiamin is a more potent anti-apoplectic
Avatar 10:26pm Pepper On Chini:

@Fleep That lady would be butter off to just stay home.
  10:27pm JakeGould:

I’d like to butter off that lady!
Avatar 10:28pm nanantatee:

Avatar 10:28pm ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

And how!
Avatar 10:29pm party sub:

hi Faye, great show! I have a feeling I'll be buying a bunch of records at the end of this set.
  10:29pm Ahmad:

Didn't even know Tullycraft put something out this year.
Avatar 10:29pm dk:

woot, tullycraft!
Avatar 10:31pm Jherweg:

Oh man, I was going to play Briggette fontaine on my show......now I have to rework everything....!
  10:32pm Bhyrindaar:

I am the alpha elf of Middle-Earth!
Avatar 10:32pm nanantatee:

one of my friends has an old tullycraft t shirt that reads "twee as f***" that I've been forever covetous of.
  10:37pm Ahmad:

Played the hell out of this album for a while.
Avatar 10:38pm doca:

@nanantatee: is there anything else on the t-shirt? I've promised a comp shirt after one of her show gifs for Faye a few months back, if you're on NYC area I could send them on the same batch. It's not original but it will be unique.
Avatar 10:39pm KP:

Hello, Faye
Avatar 10:42pm nanantatee:

@doca it said twee as f*** on the front and tullycraft on the back and was a pastel blue shirt. do some googling maybe you'll find it but i can't seem to
  10:44pm sarah c:

oh woolen men <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Greg from Bloomfield:

AH! Best of 2013. That explains why everything I just heard on the drive home was FUCKING FANTASTIC. (Also Happy New Year!)
Avatar 10:44pm doca:

@nanantatee: I've found this one flavorwire.files.wordpress.com...
Avatar 10:45pm nanantatee:

@doca yeah let me know i'm in bk would love to have one :)
Avatar 10:45pm nanantatee:

@doca no that's not it it was very plain all lowercase small plain text
Avatar 10:46pm doca:

I would love to do it, e-mail me so we can arrange the details (size and everything else). It's been years I make t-shirts for myself, I'd like to make them for other people
Avatar 10:48pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Whooda/four cast: Re deathbed quote, credit to Daniel/le Bunten/Berry: filfre.net... dadgum.com... www.mobygames.com...
Avatar 10:48pm doca:

@nanantatee: That makes it even easier. Some years ago I've made one of the Beat Happening first album cover, I used it until I could. I had the idea to do all Beat Happening album covers, but I never did it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Gaylord Fields:

@Jherweg: Pray tell, why?
Avatar 10:50pm nanantatee:

@doca I'll email my friend and see if she can send me some pics, she's kinda transitory and moving around a lot so not sure how long it'll take for her to get back
  10:50pm JakeGould:

Dan Bunten programmed M.U.L.E. One of my fave games on the Atari 800. Seven Cities of Gold was another fave.
Avatar 10:51pm doca:

@nanantatee: no hurries no worries (:
Avatar 10:53pm nanantatee:

@doca in general I would love a t shirt that said twee as f*** (are we allowed to say that here I dunno) it would only need to say that on the front and I would feel very good to wear such a garment, though in general I'm not one for t-shirts. Actually how awesome would it be if it said hello children on the back?
Avatar 10:53pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Slowly sailing across the ocean in Seven Cities of Gold was almost as endless and meditative as playing Flight Simulator.
  10:55pm Ahmad:

Listening to that Algebra Suicide all in one sitting is an endurance test.
Avatar 10:55pm doca:

@nanantatee: haha it would be awesome as f***
Avatar 10:57pm nanantatee:

Faye should choose the colors and font, though I think a sparse serify one would work nicely
Avatar 10:58pm doca:

@Faye: what's your call?
Avatar 11:00pm nanantatee:

gee I think "fetuses packing" finally got puke pudding out of my head.
  11:00pm KP:

Well that was pretty great
  11:06pm KP:

That Molly Drake is loverly. Thanks
  11:11pm JakeGould:

Faye has very, very good color taste.
Avatar 11:12pm doca:

well, alphas and children, I'm heading out, it's late here.

@nanantatee: Keep in touch so I can make your shirt (:
Avatar 11:12pm Faye:

hey thanks guys sorry I was distracted by best of thoughts
  11:13pm JakeGould:

Ahh, "Seven Cities of Gold." I really like the opening animation of the hand & scroll. Wish there was a video of that! www.youtube.com...
Avatar 11:14pm nanantatee:

@doca it's up to faye now
Avatar 11:15pm doca:

@nanantatee: Then tell me what you've decided about it (:
Avatar 11:16pm lost Life Alert:

@kenzo Interesting what Danelle Berry observes about gaming creation, "Also, I resent the strangle hold the distribution channel has on design via their arbitrarily imposed genres and product categories."
That reminds me of the '80's' 'corporate rock' mentality equivalent in music. It's funny that the development group take the look of Allman Brothers too. :)
  11:18pm JakeGould:

@WD-40/DuctTape: Good analogy. My first memories of computer games were buying them in ziplock bags hanging from racks at computer stores like Computer Center Manhattan & COMPUTEK in Brooklyn. And heck, I bought CASSETTES of games since that was the cheapest storage a 15 year old kid could afford.
Avatar 11:19pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Huh, Computek...where was that exactly? I kinda remember it.
Avatar 11:19pm Faye:

hold on did I see Gaylord on this playlist?
Avatar 11:21pm nanantatee:

@doca make it the same color as fayes icon bckgrd with red letters
Avatar 11:22pm Faye:

hey Kenzo!
Avatar 11:23pm stray teepee:

@jake I remember my daughter at about four playing games from 5 1/2" floppies, then a friend loaded a 3-D version of Chessmaster (?) from a 3" floppy which blew us away.
Avatar 11:25pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Hey Faye, thanks for the sights and sounds!
Avatar 11:26pm Faye:

:) my pleasure
  11:26pm JakeGould:

@Kenzo, Computek was in Brooklyn. Coney Island Avenue & Avenue X. Right in this map view where the closed kitchen store is now. goo.gl...
  11:26pm JakeGould:

Yup! Classic games right there!
  11:27pm some other guy:

that track made my ears cry. still love your show.
  11:27pm JakeGould:

Ahh, Harry Harrison! This is a nice surprise!
  11:28pm Ahmad:

That last one reminded me of a less acid drenched Kemialliset Ystavat.
Avatar 11:28pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@JakeGould: Maybe there's a shot of the store in this late 80's authentic bike ride footage from Brooklyn to Manhattan: youtube.com...
P.S. I used cassettes for program storage. Never bought something on one, though. I wonder if my 1981 creations still load! I still have punchcards I made in the prior decade. I also still have a big reel-to-reel tape of a major system I developed.
Jake: I may have been thinking of the place on Kings Highway around the D/Q, but I've probably been to the Coney Is Ave place.
  11:30pm KP:

Happy Holidays!
  11:31pm JakeGould:

Ahh! Kenzo! Yes, I know about the place you are talking about on Kings Highway. I still think it is a computer store now. In the map view it is now a "Photo Camera" place. goo.gl...
  11:32pm JakeGould:

Me and a friend went there to buy Pac Man for the 2600 back then. We were genuinely excited. When we took it home & played it, we were genuinely nonplused.
  11:34pm JakeGould:

Then there was this other video store & game store at one point on East 15th Street near Kings Highway. Forgive me for being so specific, but these places... Few people around now knew they existed then. My brain does still remember! goo.gl...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Yeah, Pac Man for the Atari 2600 was a complete and utter disappointment.
Avatar 11:37pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Funny, there was a photo place there back then. I think it was next door to the computer place. I almost remember the name (a guy's name, single syllable + 1 hour photo. Rob's?). Wow, it is amazing how much is unchanged across the street!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm Gaylord Fields:

Why, yes, Faye, it is I. Whilst simultaneously being a Friend of This Show, I'm trying to impress upon Mr. Herweg that there can never be too much Brigitte Fontaine on WFMU's airwaves.
Avatar 11:38pm Faye:

I can't agree more!
Avatar 11:38pm Whooda:

Thanks for the heads-up Faye. I didn't realize FMU music was downloadable, I just downloaded the Mantles from your show!
Avatar 11:38pm Faye:

all I've ever wanted in the world was a situation in which an Adrian Tomine drawing was chatting with Miffy

Kenzo, I live in Bay Ridge now… Non-Brownstone Brooklyn is so disturbingly the same it’s like I took a time warp to 1985 at times.

Anyone else's stream broken?
  11:41pm Ahmad:

Ahh just came back.
  11:42pm JakeGould:

Ahmad, thank you for playing out the I.T. scenario that every I.T. worker deals with at least once a day.

I remember liking 2600 Pac Man back then just because it was so unique. But I was playing it at other people's houses - never spent money on it.
Avatar 11:44pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Robert's Photo, that was it.
  11:45pm JakeGould:

The kid I went to get 2600 Pac Man with was a bit of a neighborhood rich kid. He had an Atari 800 with a disk drive while I had a cassette drive. And he had a 2600. I was happy to play the bootleg cassette knockoff of Pac Man for the Atari 800 called, "Ghost Hunter" www.youtube.com...

@Faye: Your show is where cartoon dreams can come true.

oh my leave it to you to say it best!

Here is Mr. Hooper playing crappy Pac Man. www.youtube.com...
Avatar 11:47pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Actually, that exact spot in Brooklyn was just on my mind 3 days ago, because I played a field recording I made walking around there, incl. sound of someone buying a token. See if you can find it: wfmu.org... - around 37:30 mark.

If I could draw blush lines over my Tomine-ized visage right now, I'd do just that.
  11:49pm JakeGould:

Hey Kenzo, wow. I have stuff to mull over this cold winter night. Still looking through the “late 80's authentic bike ride footage from Brooklyn to Manhattan.” Pretty sure I know that route & rode that route!
  11:50pm JakeGould:

@Gaylord! That is a million dollar idea! Avatars that take on emotional tones! Think about it!
Avatar 11:50pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I call the bike video "authentic" because of the way the rider weaves around the cars and pedestrians like a daily obstacle course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: For example, if I were to "think about it," as you suggest, my avatar would have a furrowed brow.
  11:54pm JakeGould:

That video won't have it. That guy in the video is commuting from Brooklyn Bridge to lower Manhattan. No w watching this mid 1980s video. www.youtube.com...
  11:54pm JakeGould:

@Gaylord, yes. Exactly! And maybe a lightbulb appears over it when you stopped thinking.
Swag For Life Member 11:55pm 12539:

Thanks, Faye!
  11:55pm JakeGould:

Thanks for the show, Faye. And thank you Kenzo for the highly specific NYC nostalgia.

Get a-developin', Jake!

Jake: Maybe you'll phone into one of my shows and we can do it inside a radio show.

Great show as always. I appreciate the time you spend for show prep. This makes 2 times a band with Cbus connections has made your year's best list.
