Ha, some DJ shop guy was trying to push those on me I'm like I don't feel like blowing $500 for the Beats Pros thank you. I settled for Shure 550s. So far so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I mean - you would, wouldn't you...
  4:15pm Robert:

Joe Frank was interviewed briefly and answered phone questions as part of WFMU's spring fundraising marathon some time during the aughts IIRC. He regretted that FCC regs on cursing & content had cramped his style and that he was therefore no longer producing for the air, but hoped that would be a temporary condition.

  4:26pm LovecraftDude888:

I think I have a pair of those somewhere! The Shures
I ended up with to have a heavy duty pair with as much
solid bass as possible, and a long cord for HTheater sometimes. So far so good. Then there are things like the Beyerdynamics at $600 haha!
  4:27pm LovecraftDude888:

AKGs are great, too. I settled on Shure almost got ATs,

Mike, ok I had a pair of those Sonys a few years back, and were not super impressed with them. Too clinical by far. Great for pro uses but not so much for pleasure listening. I thought. So far the Shures 550s I got are 2000x better.
  4:30pm LovecraftDude888:

I prob. had Koss years ago for Walkmans, yep. They were fine for the time.

..... for me I don't think I have such or ever had those "golden ears" and I am still bit of an audio "snob",, but spending more then $200 ,, oh ok tops MAYBE $300 on a pair of headphones, if your source & amp are only marginal is crazy ...

Avatar 4:35pm JakeGould:

There are two iPods that had amazing sound: The 2nd generation iPod Shuffle (the clip-on one) and the iPod Video (5th Generation Classic). Those have great DA converters.
  4:35pm LovecraftDude888:

yeah that's absurd. Not worth spending $1500 unless you're pushing some high end equipment. So sillee I called some audiophile shop here for a job and they HAVE NONE. they are barely afloat...only due to home installations! Scary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Mike East:

damn, I should have set up the cymbalom...I had some pork paprikash yesterday.

Avatar 4:38pm JakeGould:

So what about in-ear headphones? They all basically suck but are being sold as if they are amazing.
  4:38pm LovecraftDude888:

Those Bowers and Wilkins are supp. great, but very pricey. I found it's also comfort and build as well as sound. The drivers are crucial.
Avatar 4:38pm Droll:

Thousand Island Park is just the usual corner park with Miracle WHip, ketchup, and pickle relish. Delicious on Mahavisnu.
  4:39pm LovecraftDude888:

in-ear...er, some are quite good but I'm not a huge fan of

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Alison Porchnik:

Dudes, nothing beats eating paprikash when you're listening to the Mahavishnu Orchestra with Sony MDR7506s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Tome:

..been falling asleep for many years with AKG 240's == comfort most important or the cans are not worth beer cans...
Avatar 4:40pm Droll:

Long-term in-ear use is bad, I strongly recommend against sustained use of a compression driver sealing your ear canal.
Avatar 4:40pm northguineahills:

For some reason, I dug the Moskowitz/Mahavishnu Orchestra back to back did me nicely.
  4:40pm LovecraftDude888:

I saw the Motorhead 'phones..look good..sound bad!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Ike:

Sony Walkman MP3 players are an excellent value. I have the NWZ-E465. Better than most iPods and good FM reception too. Not popular; I'm surprised they still make them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- seriously - who gives Mahavishnu due props these days...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Alison Porchnik:

Goulash goes far better with the Dr. Dres, though. They're worth it just for that. Unless you're digging Procol Harum, in which case the Shures are your best bet.
  4:43pm LovecraftDude888:

I had one of those Sonys few years back but died on me..ditto for one or two of the Sandisk ones. Then invested in Ipod.
  4:43pm LovecraftDude888:

I know Droll, I'm trying to keep the volume levels down
now even with the new phones. I like it dynamic but not
really loud.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- in my limited experience (>cheap<) - Sony stuff has some good functionalities - but not durable...

Uh oh, Droll@4:40, I use earbuds all day at work. I wish I could wear my ancient Sony MDR-V6s instead, but cans are not comfortable when combined with glasses, which I must wear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Tome:

I like my nano but the Sony I seen for a lot less @ 16G > bhpho.to... < a lot less for the 4 & 8G,, only I question is the battery life & life expectancy ..
  4:48pm LovecraftDude888:

you should see the guys that show up at that Audiophile shop over here..geesh. If you aren't spending $20,000 on a Macintosh amp you're a loser.

  4:54pm LovecraftDude888:

Good lord. yeah I've heard Grado's stuff is keen. But not cheap. They make a headphone amp of human bone..just kidding. carved out of solid butter...as one XTC video had andy partridge saying about someone local on mural. Nevermind.
Avatar 4:55pm dale:

i have 70s marantz and kenwood and 90s NAD. the kenwood needs a new power supply or something - it hums really loud when you turn it on now. power caps?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Ike:

@Tome, 30 hrs. battery life is about right for MP3s on that, but as w/most MP3 players, it declines a bit if you press buttons a lot or switch it on and off a lot, as I do. (They used to claim 40 or 50 hours, def. a stretch.) Oddly, FM listening eats more power than playing MP3s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Ken:

Wow, so THAT was the famous Dave Van Ronk version of Both Sides Now! Before I knew who it was, I thought you were playing some outsider artist. THAT was Joni Mitchell's favorite version?

OH Marantz..yeeha. I had a good Kenwood bookself system but had to chuck it it died.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm Ken:

The Coen Brothers used two details from Van Ronk's life - he was a merchant marine, and he was offered one of the roles in Peter, Paul and Mary by Albert Grossman. But I agree, the character in that movie had no resemblance to Van Ronk.
Avatar 5:02pm JakeGould:

Kind of shocked how crappy Bluetooth speakers are a thing now.
  5:03pm LovecraftDude888:

Ha yeah Grado is in Sunset Park, a goof! I had no idea. Well, very nice kit, but too rich for moi. That head amp is $500! yikes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Irwin:

BTW, Ken -- I really enjoyed the film, while agreeing w/your assessment that you don't really care about most of the characters. It's just a great Coen brothers outing. I dug the performances and thought the music was terrif.
Avatar 5:06pm JakeGould:

“Inside Llewyn Davis” is great. It’s clear they used the framework of the Dave Van Ronk bio for the setting & some items, but it’s definitely not about Dave Van Ronk in any way. True parallel universe.
Avatar 5:07pm JakeGould:

This article in the Village Voice by Dave Van Ronk’s ex-wife explains the differences well. www.villagevoice.com...
Avatar 5:07pm glenn:

i saw him play in toronto in the fall of '84. he was drunk, nasty and brilliant.
  5:07pm LovecraftDude888:

didn't realize it was inspired mainly by Van Ronk, now I'm more intrigued to see this. thought perhaps by Tim Buckley or someone. I dunno. Did I mention I met Joe Boyd back in May? That was a thrill.
Avatar 5:08pm JakeGould:

“ Two wonderful scenes do relate specifically to David, though. In one, Llewyn Davis asks Mel, the owner of the record company that released his first album, for royalties, telling the man he doesn't even own an overcoat.”
Avatar 5:08pm JakeGould:

“In another scene, Davis says (perhaps sarcastically) to someone in the seaman's union, "You won't give me my papers because I'm a communist?" The man mutters, "Shachtmanite." That's a political reference that almost no one in the world will get -- but to me, who hung around but didn't join a small socialist sect known as the Shachtmanites, it's very, very funny.”
Avatar 5:09pm glenn:

joe boyd's book is pretty good, although i wish it was more detailed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Parq:

I haven't seen the flik or read the book, but that's my favorite version of "Both Sides Now" too. You should check into his version of "That Song About the Midway" from the "Sunday Street" album, all of which is wonderful.
Avatar 5:10pm glenn:

funny, i've been in 3 unions, and i've never met more conservative people.
  5:10pm LovecraftDude888:

yeah got Joe to sign one of those. It does seem a bit breezy his book...maybe he'll write some more? But the live thing I saw him do reading with Robyn H. doing the music was sick!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Ken:

I didn't like "Inside Llewyn Davis" at all, and I love the Coen Brothers. I felt like it was a squandered opportunity to explore a vibrant musical scene. Almost every character in the movie came off as a complete loser.
Avatar 5:12pm glenn:

they ARE complete losers.

Yikes, Ken. I loved No Country F. Old Men but my mom hated it! Too violent and "pointless" for her. I thought it rocked! "Put it in your pocket...it's your lucky quarter"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Irwin:

Ken: Yes, every character screamed LOSER. But it was an entertaining portrait of losers. Didn't you at least like the cat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Parq:

The ultimate Union Democrat was Daley, a stone right winger on every issue except unions. Most of his constituents were the same way -- I know my dad was. Jimmy Cagney was, too, or so it seems from his autobio.
Avatar 5:13pm JakeGould:

So you liked “The Ladykillers” and “The Man Who Wasn't There?” I can’t think that “Inside Llewyn Davis” is worse than those turds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- okay - reading Van Ronk's ex's opinion @ that Link puts Ken's opinion in context...Then again, the Coen's did Ulysses in Old Weird America in 'O Brother'...
Avatar 5:14pm glenn:

i love the coen brothers too, but i hate a couple of their movies, notably barton fink, which everybody loves, and i love miller's crossing, which nobody even seems to know exists.
  5:14pm LovecraftDude888:

I love Big Liebowski even though it's like, a good "bad" movie. in a sense. It's a goof.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Ken:

Jake, those are two Coen movies I missed! I guess I was lucky.
Avatar 5:15pm JakeGould:

“Big Liebowski” is the best. I hate the frat-boy/dude-bro culture that has grown up around that film, but remember just loving it right when it came out.
  5:15pm LovecraftDude888:

Miller's Crossing is really good. Barton Fink..used to hate it, now kinda dig it. Sort of.
Avatar 5:15pm glenn:

blood simple still rocks, though.
Avatar 5:16pm JakeGould:

Well, Ken… If you think all of the characters in “Inside Llewyn Davis” are losers, then what about Scorsese films like “Raging Bull” or “Taxi Driver?” I mean those are films about mental cases & the mental cases around them.
Avatar 5:16pm glenn:

maybe it's that i just don't like john turturro.
  5:16pm LovecraftDude888:

aye, Blood Simple rawks. I need to rescreen that soon a candidate for the new Idiot Box I got.
Avatar 5:16pm JakeGould:

Also, yes, “The Ladykillers” and “The Man Who Wasn't There” are utter shit.
  5:17pm LovecraftDude888:

I've seen Scarecrow a few times the past few years, that's a great great film!! Hackman and Pacino. total loserdom.
  5:18pm LovecraftDude888:

Hackman goes "I can tear the ass out of an elephant." Thank you, Gene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Ken:

True Jake, but the difference is that I CARED about the characters in Scorcese films. Speaking of which, The Wolf of Wall Street has the GREATEST DRUG SCENE ever in the history of cinema.
Avatar 5:19pm glenn:

the ladykillers is ten times better than the man who wasn't there. what about the hudsucker proxy?
  5:19pm LovecraftDude888:

Dinnertime soon...supper. What about The Hyena of Bedford Ave.?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- that is - I can see Ken's point it doesn't do that Scene justice
- but also that that probably isn't the Coen's objective
...different than the Haynes films like that
...ain't seen it - can't have an opinion yet...
Avatar 5:20pm JakeGould:

Qualudes scene?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Ken:

Yep, the Quaaludes scene! wow.
Avatar 5:22pm JakeGould:

Okay, fair enough on the Scorsese assessment. But I can’t get myself to see “Wolf of Wall Street” because I just hat dealing with movies that are nearly 3 hours in length.
Avatar 5:22pm dale:

i had a quaaludes scene once. but it was only a half. and not that much of a scene really
Avatar 5:24pm glenn:

so, berlin alexanderplatz isn't in your future, jake?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Alison Porchnik:

Ken, better than the mountain of coke in Scarface?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Parq:

Never saw "Hudsucker" and I confess that the chicken in me is reluctant to see "Miller". I liked looking at "Wasn't There", anyway, and thought "Ladykillers" was just mediocre -- which, in its own way is even worse than a movie that outright sucks.
Avatar 5:24pm JakeGould:

But will see if I can do an early showing of it so I can leave the theater & do something else afterwards. 90 minute movies. That’s what I like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Tome:

not a Brad Pitt fan but saw "Snatch" other day first time was freaking funny as hell! as long as we're now talking movies? and NOT audio snob or what we should be music I am guessing for f sake !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Ken:

Yeah, WAY better than anything in Scarface. But then again, I had a friend in High School whose nickname was "Quay," so maybe Im biased. Wold of Wall Street was worth three hours - I loved it. My daughter hated it though.
  5:30pm LovecraftDude888:

nevermind that, if you can't deal with Millers Crossing don't see Only God Forgives...I did 2 weeks ago...not a good film really but it's over the top in a major way. Pretty violent.
  5:33pm LovecraftDude888:

"wanna fight?" bad idea.
  5:34pm LovecraftDude888:

Ballad of Amy was wrenching, dude. egads!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Ike:

Agreed that Man Who Wasn't There is a terrible, terrible movie, one of the worst I've ever seen. My fave Coens flick is O Brother.
Avatar 5:35pm dale:

they were counting on the carter kids cuteness factor lovecraft
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...? - there's scenes showing people *doing* drugs - then scenes that convey what drugs are *like* - ??...I dunno - I'm not a film nut...
  5:36pm LovecraftDude888:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I do think Pacino portraying just being drunk in Scarface is a kind of genius...
  5:39pm LovecraftDude888:

first you get the Grados, then you get the women...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...put your headphones on so you don't have to listen to them ??...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm fleep:

I'm shopping for a pair of world cancelling headphones.

A man comes home from a long day at work, plops down on the couch in front of the television and turns on the game. Without hesitation he tells his wife, “Get me a beer before it starts.” The wife sighs and gets him a beer.
Fifteen minutes later he says, “Get me another beer before it starts.” She looks cross, but fetches another beer and slams it down next to him. He quickly finishes that beer and a few minutes later says, “Quick, get me another beer, it’s going to start any minute.” The wife is furious. She yells at him “Is that all you’re going to do tonight? Drink beer and sit in front of that TV? You’re nothing but a lazy, drunken, fat slob, and furthermore …”

The man sighs and says, “It's started …”

Avatar 7:58pm Droll:

Howdy Irwin,

I'm so glad I came back for the last hour so I could re-enjoy "Slap me with your punishing rod" over 100 Buffalo Bills. Are you _sure_ those Joe Frank episodes aren't real? That scene sounds amazingly real to me. "LOUDER!"

I hope you are enjoying your snow and went sledding or skitching or something fun!
