Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Ike:

Outstanding sounds so far!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Cory:

kinda wish I wasn't going to my FLGS at 4:30, oh well. I'll get good and "relaxed" before listening to the archive #TeamFabio #TeamClay
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm common:

hell yea, clay and fabio! happy happies to you two!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm braveness23:

B23 here! Hello friends
  3:19pm Yair yona:

Hey everyone, happy holidays.
This cybotron release is amazing.
  3:28pm Jedd X:

Listening live for a change, KILLER START my friend!
Avatar 3:34pm controlled cathater overflow:

Nice sounds Fabio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm davex:

Happy holidaytime, Fabio, Clay, and everyone! Looking forward to the showdown show...
  3:41pm Janski the *Jamster* Hamster:

3rd eye and ear well and truly squeegeed!
  3:43pm dale:

i think i have 3rd ear macbeth. never got in to it for some reason. minus one for fabio.

The Failure of 2013
Avatar 3:55pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Fabio, this sounds great as usual. Sorry I didn't do any holiday fill-ins (my favorite!) for you this year.
(Although I did have the good fortune to have my own show land on the holiday yesterday anyway.)
Avatar 3:56pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Wow, everything on this soundtrack is great. I guess I've never actually heard the whole thing, because this track surprises me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Carmichael:

I believe Mr McGasko played some of this soundtrack this morning. Hi Clay and Fabio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm common:

that was creepy and great, just like the film.
  3:58pm Matthew Koons:

Bring on the Duel ... #TeamClay
Avatar 3:58pm Yair Etziony:

Excellent set
  3:59pm Jedd X:

Was that Artemiev off the soundtrack or a mix with the movie vox included, never seemed to hear the vocals on my copy???
  4:00pm Jedd X:

Ah, must have been the Kirchin piece, LOL
Avatar 4:01pm Fabio:

The music with the vocals buried in it was from Basil Kirchin, not Solaris OST.
Avatar 4:04pm Matthew from Pennsylvania:

Avatar 4:05pm kat330:

Throw down the gauntlet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm SeanG:

Hey Kenzo, that's awesome that you played John Parr last night-hahaha--gotta go back and listen!
Avatar 4:09pm Philo Gristle:

Big Tarkovski fan, though prefer Andrei Rublev to Solaris (still great).
Avatar 4:10pm glenn:

a christmas joke.
Three guys leave their office christmas party and die in a horrible accident. they reach the pearly gates, and are greeted by saint peter.
"In honor of this holy season," Saint Peter said, "You must each possess something that symbolizes Christmas to get into heaven".
The first man fumbles through his pockets and pulls out a lighter. He flicked it on. "It represents a candle," he said. "You may pass through the pearly gates," Saint Peter said.
The second man reaches into his pocket and pulls out a set of keys. He shook them and said, "They're bells." Saint Peter said, "You may pass through the pearly gates."
The third man starts searching desperately through his pockets and finally puls out a pair of panties.
St. Peter looks at the man with a raised eyebrow and asked, "And just what do those symbolize?
The man replied, "They're Carol's."
Avatar 4:11pm Dale from North Dakota:

Where is Clay?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm SeanG:

good one Glenn!
Avatar 4:11pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Brian Eno fucking everywhere. My show yesterday spent a while dwelling on the Eno within a U2 song, starting around 44 minutes in.

@SeanG: And yeah, the other pieces especially dwelled on were John Parr as written by mega-omniwriter David Foster, Toto (who also played in the Parr song), and some over-the-topping extended climaxing of a Philip Glass series.
Avatar 4:12pm Philo Gristle:

Funny, Glenn, though it would be improved if the word used had been "underpants."
Avatar 4:14pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Is this unrelated to La Düsseldorf?
Avatar 4:14pm morris midget:

@Ken am 15 minutes in to yesterday's show at Black Devil Disco Club.
Avatar 4:15pm glenn:

but then you may have thought they were carroll o'connor's, and that would never do.
Avatar 4:16pm kat330:

@Philo: That just may be us. You know my distaste for the words "underpants" (which Letterman loves to use) and "panties."
Avatar 4:16pm Philo Gristle:

@Kenzo Related, but legally limited. Don't know who what where and how, but it's Klaus Dinger in both cases...
Avatar 4:17pm glenn:

how about "gitch"?
Avatar 4:18pm butt ugly:

@glenn I'm sure St. Peter loves a man that's quick 'on his feet' just as much as he loves a woman 'quick off her feet.'
Avatar 4:19pm kat330:

Underwear covers the multitude and doesn't make my ears wince.
Avatar 4:20pm glenn:

but it would ruin my joke, and that's what we're losing sight of here.
Avatar 4:21pm kat330:

Right, glenn, we sure don't want to lose sight of your funny -- and it was.
Avatar 4:21pm dale:

glenn - did the guy get in? if he added they belonged to a round young virgin it would be extra points
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Ike:

I should have queued up a Fabio archive for last night's eerie long drive through the near-total lengths of DE and NJ. Roads were virtually deserted except for the occasional pedestrian mysteriously stumbling around, and the street lights cast a strange, far-reaching placid glow.
Avatar 4:22pm Philo Gristle:

@kat Since you know my pen-chant of the (tawny) port-man-tea-u, perhaps we could make it into "underpanties," doubling the level of-noxious.
Avatar 4:22pm glenn:

i don't believe the gentlemen in question were of the islamic pesuasion.
Avatar 4:23pm kat330:

Fabio, I know you love great world cinema. Have you ever seen the Swedish silent film, The Phantom Carriage?
Avatar 4:24pm Philo Gristle:

Richard Pinhas -- he collaborated with one of my favorite US science fiction writers, Norman Spinrad. Rather liked that cut, never heard any.
Avatar 4:25pm Cecile:

hey, when is the throwdown happening?
Avatar 4:25pm kat330:

I LOVE this "Fille Qui Mousse"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm SeanG:

just in time Cecile--4:30
Avatar 4:29pm Cecile:

oh, 3:30, got it .
Avatar 4:29pm kat330:

Well, I recommend it for anyone out there. We didn't watch it because of any seasonal reason, but turns out it makes an interesting NYE or New Year's Day choice. It's sort of a Dickens' "Christmas Carol," only a "New Year's Eve Carol" instead.
Avatar 4:29pm Philo Gristle:

Hedeyat is third favorite in a row...
Avatar 4:30pm kat330:

@Philo: And yet you detest mushrooms!
  4:30pm Jedd X:

One of your best shows ever Fabio!
Avatar 4:31pm Philo Gristle:

Yep, Phantom Carriage is wonderful. Probably a good easy intro for modern viewers into Silent Cinema. Had a spectacular new-ish score by Matti Bye, too.
Avatar 4:33pm dale:

clay's gonna have to lay down some steaming slabs of ken hammond or dokken to measure up to fabio tonight!
Avatar 4:33pm kat330:

@Jedd X: Yes, Clay will have his work cut out for him at this rate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm SeanG:

no place I'd rather be than right here

Avatar 4:37pm Cecile:

Clay, just play some Kix and be done with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm common:

yea! clay!
Avatar 4:37pm glenn:

clay, you have to beat fabio at his own game. play nothing but sparks and the buzzcocks.
Avatar 4:37pm Matthew from Pennsylvania:

CLAY!!!! #TeamClay :)
Avatar 4:38pm Starwick:

LOL!! Love listening to these live.
Avatar 4:38pm glenn:

hp stands for House of Parliament.
Avatar 4:38pm Matthew from Pennsylvania:

me too ... I hardly get to listen live. Clay never disappoints.
Avatar 4:39pm Cecile:

Oh dear God.
Clay, just play the dirty clown and call it a day.
Avatar 4:39pm Cecile:

Avatar 4:39pm glenn:

which is why there's a big ass picture of the british house of commons on the label.
Avatar 4:40pm Cecile:

I like the A1 sauce as declared A1 at some weird expo in 1803 or whatever
Avatar 4:40pm glenn:

eeek, 30 seconds in and we've already gone through 4 time signature changes.
Avatar 4:40pm Chris from DC:

Clearly there is no god, Cecile.
Avatar 4:40pm Cecile:

I hate this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm common:

where the hell did you find this one, clay? wow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Carmichael:

Both sauces are made by Heinz anyway. I think they just put different labels on the bottles.
Avatar 4:41pm glenn:

oh man, this is terrible.
Avatar 4:41pm kat330:

Guess they have to shout "this is music" repeatedly to make people believe it actually is.
Avatar 4:42pm kat330:

Clay sounds fine. Fabio sounds like he's away from the mic.
  4:42pm Janski the *Jamster* Hamster:

ding! if that's a cow bell
Avatar 4:42pm Matthew from Pennsylvania:

+50 for me
Avatar 4:43pm kat330:

The lyrics!
Avatar 4:43pm nitcheepaw:

I think Clay has sabotaged the mic on you Fabio. Trying to throw you off your game.
Avatar 4:43pm dale:

look at the cover - it's awesome!!
Avatar 4:43pm Cecile:

-100 points!
  4:43pm Sandy in Houston:

I think that deserved some points . 10!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm common:

i'm with matthew!
Avatar 4:43pm kat330:

Fabio, were you not listening to Clay's song's lyrics? ;)
Avatar 4:43pm Matthew from Pennsylvania:

thx @common
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm common:

thanks dale!
Avatar 4:44pm Cecile:

Sandy, I gave it points. Just negative ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm steve:

woo hoo got here just in time
Avatar 4:44pm Matthew from Pennsylvania:

Woah, Fab is bringing out the LCD Soundsystem? Well, then, if that's how you're going to play. LOL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Ike:

Max points are 10, right? Surprised to say, I'm giving Clay's first track 10 points! Dug it.

Wait, LCD Soundsystem? Whaaaaat?
  4:44pm Sandy in Houston:

no no it was good. !
Avatar 4:45pm Cecile:

10 for appropriateness of song
8 for song
Average 9
9 points!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm SeanG:

+10 for Clay for sheer weirdness
Avatar 4:45pm Philo Gristle:

So far a double-yawn.
Avatar 4:46pm kat330:

With this from Fabio, guess it's even steven for me.
Avatar 4:46pm Matthew from Pennsylvania:

Well, if the max is 10, then I must give Fab a 9 on this one. Mad props for LCD Soundsystem.
Avatar 4:46pm dale:

round one to the fabio sound system
Avatar 4:46pm glenn:

first round
david wolff 0
lcd 7
  4:47pm Sandy in Houston:

-5 for LCD Sound System. too calculating.
Avatar 4:47pm northguineahills:

I actually dug this LCD when it came out. But, after hearing it continuously in Brooklyn, I'll have to give it a 7 today.
Avatar 4:47pm Chris from DC:

Well anything would beat that first song, so 5 for Fabio.
Avatar 4:47pm dale:

but david wolff's cape and tight satin pants rate a 9
Avatar 4:47pm Cecile:

I am jamming hard to this.
Avatar 4:48pm glenn:

first guy to play deadmau5 loses by default.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm steve:

sorry Fab, 2/10 for the bland Park Slope stroller mom soundtrack that is LCD Soundsystem and this song
Avatar 4:48pm dale:

now seems as good a time as any to start drinking - who's with me?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Ike:

@Carm@4:41, NO WAY. A1 has no dates and the vinegar is probably less malty. Much less tamarind and garlic, I'm betting. Not as complex or crazy as HP.
Avatar 4:49pm Philo Gristle:

@Dale You're behind.
Avatar 4:49pm Cecile:

I haven't heard this to death, so it's still funny to me.
Avatar 4:49pm Matthew from Pennsylvania:

@Glenn ... LOL. I say anything from Justin Bieber ... but since his 'music' isn't music I guess we don't have to worry about that.
Avatar 4:49pm dale:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Ike:

@Cecile@4:36, har har, Hewlett Packard Sauce sounds like what Rev. Turnip needs when eating his staplers.
Avatar 4:50pm Cecile:

I am actually going to see the Sonics on March 2
Avatar 4:51pm northguineahills:

Right w/ you dale. i have leftover non-dairy eggnog w/ me.
Avatar 4:51pm Cecile:

Count those negative points.
Avatar 4:51pm Cecile:

you lie, Clay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Ike:

There are still no negative points permitted, right? In the past it went 0 to 10.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm efd:

Might be a stupid question, but is the red strip of tape on the mic facing Fabio?
Avatar 4:52pm glenn:

i suspect clay is not that impartial.
Avatar 4:52pm kat330:

@Dale: Philo just poured a Sierra Nevada stout for himself, and I'm having a glass of champagne. :)
Avatar 4:53pm milk outlet man:

Mary Wing was having trouble with a mic last night sounding tinny and in-and-out loud, so they said.
Avatar 4:54pm glenn:

kenzo, we need a tally system for the showdowns.
Avatar 4:54pm Cecile:

0, Clay.
Avatar 4:54pm kat330:

Why does one move from NOLA to Long Island?! Gotta be for love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm efd:

2/10 to Clay for playing "Who's Behind The Door" instead of "Tell Me What You Want."
Avatar 4:54pm dale:

i have a sore throat so i'm hitting the drambuie with a bag of pop secret - cheers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm SeanG:

classic clay right here
Avatar 4:55pm Chris from DC:

10 for Clay for making me laugh out loud.
  4:55pm phat:

Holy crap.
Avatar 4:55pm Cecile:

I always thought Zebra were from Canada. Whew, Canada dodged a bullet there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm SeanG:

dude has a higher voice than Geddy Lee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm common:

10 for clay!
Avatar 4:56pm kat330:

@Dale: Ha, synch! We just had some Orville Redenbacher "natural", so-called.
Avatar 4:56pm dale:

i like this early 70s anthemic prog sound. i may have to vote for this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm davex:

Hard to come up with points for these tracks...
Avatar 4:57pm glenn:

meh. you say zebra, i say glass tiger.
Avatar 4:57pm cobradan:

Round one goes to Clay. LCD weak choice. You can do better Fab.
  4:57pm Jedd X:

Ouch, minus 100 for Clay, OK, revised to - 99, the falsetto is kinda funny
Avatar 4:57pm Cecile:

Frozen Ghost!
Avatar 4:57pm dale:

damn, now i wanna hear chilliwacks 'fly by night' - damn you clay!
Avatar 4:57pm Philo Gristle:

Third loser in a row.... damn! And after that GREAT pre-show set from Fabio. Glass Tiger, Glenn? No Jade?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Ike:

ZERO to Clay. Very silly.
Avatar 4:57pm Cecile:

Avatar 4:57pm kat330:

Well, this certainly beats Clay's first one, but ....
Avatar 4:58pm Philo Gristle:

Oh, it was Rabbit anyway. D'oh.
Avatar 4:58pm Starwick:

Listening to Clay's selections always takes me back to hanging out in my uncle Mark's bedroom listening to the stereo in 1976.
Avatar 4:58pm dale:

if geddy lee was in genesis......YES!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm steve:

7/10 for unexpected laser noises
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm davex:

Might have to resort to hexadecimal: 6B on a scale of E5.
  4:59pm ?:

Lasers are so cool! 10 to Clay!!!!
Avatar 4:59pm kat330:

@davex: Heh!
Avatar 4:59pm glenn:

the first two chilliwack albums are really good, actually.
  4:59pm C in Tiger:

@Cecile... I agree, Zebra sounds 100% Canadian. I don't know what to make of Zebra. I don't think I'll call them good, but I like the fact that they manipulate vocal production much more than most bands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Carmichael:

Ike, they are indeed from the same maker. But I was joking about the same sauce. I grew up with HP sauce, and laughed when I heard about the American *version* A1. Never could stomach the stuff.
Avatar 5:00pm Cecile:

Avatar 5:00pm Matthew from Pennsylvania:

Don't worry clay ... that was good track ... 8/10 for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Carmichael:

That Zebra thing gets a 4 from me. Derivative negative points.
Avatar 5:00pm glenn:

how do they sound canadian, exactly? i'm curious.
Avatar 5:00pm dale:

yes we did clay...i liked it....
  5:00pm Sandy in Houston:

-1 for zebra
  5:01pm gerbilgeist:

Zebra: 10 to Clay - Geddy Lazer
Avatar 5:01pm northguineahills:

Zebra gets a token 1 for aforementioned laser sounds.
Avatar 5:02pm Cecile:

oh, I thought this was Sonic's Rendevous Band. 4 for bad Vanilla Fudge vibes and leading me on.
Avatar 5:02pm kat330:

Why is it Fabio totally changes up his musical choices whenever it's a showdown with Clay?
  5:02pm Dan:

25 points for SRC
Avatar 5:03pm beezlebubba:

One of you boys are going to put an eye out with those things!
Avatar 5:03pm kat330:

Zebra and sheep -- guess it's the animal throw down.
Avatar 5:03pm glenn:

2nd round.
zebra 3
src 8
Avatar 5:03pm Matthew from Pennsylvania:

2/10 for SRC ... Sorry Fab, that was ... what was that??? This round, goes to Clay!! #TeamClay
Avatar 5:03pm Snortley:

Zebra's echo at the end of each stanza earns them a -9.
Avatar 5:04pm Philo Gristle:

+3 for the guitar. I gotta stay positive.
Avatar 5:04pm kat330:

And shouldn't David Wolff be on the "Black Sheep" track?
Avatar 5:04pm glenn:

the song is worth 2. the guitar solo is worth 6.
Avatar 5:04pm Chris from DC:

Glenn, exactly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm steve:

6/10 for SRC
Avatar 5:04pm Cecile:

so it averages to 4.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Carmichael:

Also a 4. Sounded like Crazy Horse.
  5:05pm gerbilgeist:

SRC - Black Sheep - +/-0 The almost good cancels the rather bad.
  5:06pm C in Tiger:

@glenn... Canadian because they remind me a lot of Triumph and Aldo Nova and probably listened to a lot of Rush.
Avatar 5:06pm glenn:

hmmm. you would think, but no. 8.
Avatar 5:06pm Cecile:

there's enough talk about swords to fuel a Shakespearean gay porno here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm davex:

Both songs get ∞/0.
Avatar 5:07pm glenn:

starcastle. clay wins this round, unless fabio pulls out marquee moon.
Avatar 5:08pm Cecile:

starcastle = 2.
Avatar 5:09pm in my own sauce:

Avatar 5:09pm kat330:

@glenn: We just listened to Marquee Moon on our drive back to Knob Knee from Loogootee yesterday (yep, just wanted to type "Loogootee"), but indeed we did.
Avatar 5:09pm Chris from DC:

I was ready to give it 0, but 1 for the cheesy keyboards.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Carmichael:

Starcastle ... Zero ....
Avatar 5:10pm dale:

oh, a lot of unnecessary noodling going on in this starcastle
Avatar 5:10pm Matthew from Pennsylvania:

eh ... 5/10 for this one. Good song, but it does not blow me over.
Avatar 5:11pm glenn:

ooooooh. they should have edited the src guitar solo in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Greg from VA:

10/10 for SRC, Scott Richard Case from Detroit, they had a strong regional sound in the Midwest, still relevant, still strong!
Avatar 5:11pm Cecile:

Roundabout, Anoka County's finest Yes tribute band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm SeanG:

clay always self-destructs with this starcastle crap
  5:12pm jeanne:

zero points for startcastle. in fact thinking of listening to a CD now...
Avatar 5:12pm Philo Gristle:

+1 for the vinyl crackle. Otherwise a miss....
Avatar 5:12pm glenn:

alright, i was wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Greg from VA:

Starcastle, 5/10, just half way there, has a weak YES sound.
  5:12pm Jedd X:

Clay, your roots are showing, OUCH< fall on your sword now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm steve:

i like noodley prog - 7/10
Avatar 5:12pm Chris from DC:

Fabio lands a haymaker. 10.
  5:13pm C in Tiger:

I'm enjoying this like I can enjoy a Yes track. Until the little guitar bridge and wah-wah guitar on the 2nd verse, which isn't Yes at all. I wish I couldn't understand the lyrics, tho. I give it a 3 for amusement value.
Avatar 5:13pm glenn:

magazine. 10
Avatar 5:13pm cobradan:

seems a lot longer than four minutes.
Avatar 5:13pm Cecile:

liking the intro to this.
  5:13pm hdm:

this stuff gives irony a bad name
  5:13pm jmr3:

bonus points for blatant Yessing
Avatar 5:13pm imported caper:

*picking nose* Starcastle listened to Yes I bet.
Avatar 5:13pm Davee:

Alright now I need to chime in . . . I really love Clay's music . . . the Zebra tune was great . . . .but Fabio keeps coming back with some REAL quality music. It is hard to decide, do I go mainstream or do I go for quality? I believe there is a place for both . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm SeanG:

gary glitter riff
  5:14pm Jedd X:

Fabio shines with Magazine, tho Permafrost would have nuked Clay
Avatar 5:14pm northguineahills:

+6 for Magazine.
Avatar 5:14pm Matthew from Pennsylvania:

0/10 for this song by Fab ...
Avatar 5:14pm glenn:

3rd round
starcastle 0
magazine 10
Avatar 5:14pm Cecile:

ah, yes! haven't heard this in a long time. 7.
Avatar 5:15pm northguineahills:

I wasn't really into Starcastle, but I'm glad I heard it.
Avatar 5:15pm cobradan:

Fab wins this round.
Avatar 5:15pm dale:

this round to fabs - but how will clay spin it?
  5:15pm ScottC:

Fab's only chance now is some Red Lorry Yellow Lorry - need some flamboyancy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm steve:

best song so far. 8/10 for Magazine
Avatar 5:16pm glenn:

john mcgeoch. the best punk / new wave guitarist, hands down.

Magazine 10/10, time for Clay to turn the pages and learn a lesson here!
Avatar 5:16pm kat330:

This may be my favorite since the showdown throw down began. Maybe a 7.

This round is no contest. Win for Fabio, 9.

8 more for magazine!
Avatar 5:16pm Vee_K:

this song is so good
Avatar 5:16pm Philo Gristle:

It's not quite Buzzcocks, but Magazine is alright, and so far the best tune +5. Never was a big fan of Devoto's vox.
Avatar 5:16pm kat330:

And the drummer's no slouch either.
Avatar 5:17pm Cecile:

who is drumming on this? They are killing it. I raise the score to 8.

Avatar 5:19pm glenn:

i saw them play three times, and saw devoto play solo once. magazine was easily the loudest show i ever saw.

10/10 for Clay on this song ... EXCELLENT SONG!! #TeamClay
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Ike:

Magazine +7, Chase zero. Chase is appalling. Some of the worst, most tacky lyrics and most cliched vox I've ever heard.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Ike:

@LS@5:23, more like Chicago vomited on Blood Sweat & Tears and created Blood Vomit Sweat & Tears. Mostly vomit & tears. Not the good kind of tears either.

Avatar 6:11pm northguineahills:

+2 for Styx, not a Styx hater.
Avatar 6:11pm dale:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Greg from VA:

Soul of the heart music by Charles Bradley versus the cold whiny sneezes of Styx, no contest, Charles gets 9 points!
  6:15pm jeff in puna:

Holy moly. Instant soul classic
Avatar 6:15pm Philo Gristle:

Styx +1 for playing the worst song of the year. Cojones.
Charles Bradley +9. Fantastic.
  6:15pm TDK60:

I was driving at night on PA Tpk, near P.burgh circa 1975. I heard Styx on radio for 1st time. I knew rock was dead...or...waiting for punk to come along.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm George of Troy:

Seriously cool cover of a great Sabbath song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm steve:

holy hell moly... 10 points for Fab

I call this one a tie. Charles Bradley = 3.

The adamancy of some commenters (in the face of absurdity) has me believing there's some major moolah on the line for them.
  6:16pm Jedd X:

PERFECTION! 10000000 points for Charles Bradley
Avatar 6:16pm Barbie Buns:

Clay pulls one out of left field for the surprise cover of the contest. Nice recovery from that Styx debacle.

Avatar 6:17pm northguineahills:

+8 for Charles Bradley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Greg from VA:

I relate to everything about Clay except for 90% of the music he likes,… so strange how that works.
  6:18pm eejisquay:

what happened to the good ole days when it was just clay on this show?!
  6:18pm TDK60:

Can we get a theoretical analysis of this duel?
Avatar 6:18pm Cecile:

I gotta go. Take care!
Avatar 6:19pm Vee_K:

it's all good ole days
Avatar 6:19pm dale:

the charles bradley isn't vintage, it's brand new. minus points for the 70s distorted over-aware production

Cecile, have a Happy New Year!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Carmichael:

I'm glad we've moved on from Styx-Gate.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm steve:

9 for Clay! more soul!
Avatar 6:22pm Tidepoolbay:

Nice choice with Charles Bradley! A great cover! Now I need to find that album. Clay -10 for Styx
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Carmichael:

This now sounds dated after the modern Charles Bradley. 6 points.
Avatar 6:22pm Philo Gristle:

Props, Clay. A fine pick. Even if it was the first one. +7
Avatar 6:23pm dale:

i wonder how you introduced yourself if you were a pip?

Smith kills.10
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm steve:

Avatar 6:24pm kat330:

'Bout any version of this kills. GREAT song, period.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Carmichael:

Oh gosh, It's Smith. a good oldie, let's say a 7.
  6:25pm cglenn:

Fab... really dig it..
Avatar 6:25pm foot drag racer:

*be still my beating heart* Smith... Best screaming vocals ever

One of those West Coast hippy R&B outfits. 1.2
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Greg from VA:

Smith digs in at 9 points, nice Fab!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Carmichael:

I have this video from a live Canadian variety show in the 70s. You know, David Steinberg, Lily Tomlin, etc ... You remember, right?
  6:26pm beek:

wow all this time i thought fabio was gay
Avatar 6:27pm kat330:

Well, I do remember Tomlin and Steinberg very well.
Avatar 6:27pm Larst:

Clay is totally a self-inflicted wound today. Fab +11
Avatar 6:27pm glenn:

ninth round

Avatar 6:27pm northguineahills:

Glady Knights gets +4

Baby it's You gets +5
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Pete the Ficker:

Oh my God. Fabio. You scored here. 500 points for Smith. Sorry Clay:-{
Avatar 6:27pm dale:

clay needs to bring the poppy family to best the smiths
Avatar 6:27pm kat330:

@beek: I believe that is a case of "name-ism." ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Greg from VA:

Clay is Mustard, Fab is Ketchup, the condiments of bad and good sound.
  6:28pm Janski the *Jamster* Hamster:

the scoring is almost as bent as the elections
  6:28pm C in Tiger:

Awesome, Rush! It better be Bytor and the Snow Dog.
Avatar 6:28pm Chris from DC:

Ok, this weeks classic rock tally on WFMU: Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, Heart, Styx, and now did Clay just mention Rush?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Carmichael:

Don't you play fuckin' Rush. DON'T!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm SeanG:

love the sword play
Avatar 6:31pm Chris from DC:

The apocalypse is here.
Avatar 6:31pm kat330:

Regarding points tallying: As Sandra Day O'Connor finally admitted, "Bush vs. Gore is probably a mistake."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Carmichael:

Avatar 6:31pm glenn:

he's playing rush, carm.
  6:31pm C in Tiger:

Tom Sawyer = 7
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Greg from VA:

Why were there so many whiny high pitched singers in rock groups in the 70's?
Avatar 6:32pm Larst:

Clay goes mainstream. +55
Avatar 6:32pm cobradan:

obvious Rush choice -12
Avatar 6:32pm kat330:

I think the swordplay is just Clay on his own. I mean, not suggesting anything untoward...
Avatar 6:32pm glenn:

this is gonna ruin my sobriety.
Avatar 6:32pm dale:

proggy noodling away!
Avatar 6:32pm kat330:

This is THE epitome of OVER-everything -- just OVERdone.
  6:33pm TDK60:

Rush might've been fun sans any vocals, maybe? I like the guitar sound. Some people say their drummer is great. This tune wasn't horrid, maybe?
Avatar 6:33pm Philo Gristle:

Not speaking of Clay, but it's a Bum Rush.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm George of Troy:

Tom Sawyer=Way too predictable. Would've got more traction with YYZ from the same album.
Avatar 6:33pm dale:

might as well be spyro gyra
Avatar 6:33pm kat330:

@Greg: Wearing too-tightie whities.
Avatar 6:34pm northguineahills:

I was really late getting into Rush (like late 90s late). Therefore, I really don't have the negative connotations of Rush.

Rush +8
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Rush would be OK if it were a better selection. I give it 3 of 10.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Cory:

8/10 for Rush
Avatar 6:34pm balloon bottom:

Don't want to betray my high-school buddies so I won't disparage the Rush...*this time*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Greg from VA:

Compared to today's rock, Rush is great,… though compared to rock of its time, this is middle of the road overproduced glitzy stuff made to make the charts!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Matt W:

+8 for making me air drum
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm steve:

4 points for Rush, 1 for obvious choice = 5/10
Avatar 6:36pm dale:

mrs. dale said 'working man - awesome song'
Avatar 6:36pm Larst:

watercress sandwiches.
Avatar 6:36pm Philo Gristle:

Rush Full Zero.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Greg from VA:

@kat330. . . How would you know?
Avatar 6:37pm dale:

roxy wins
  6:37pm postmod:

What's with all the castrati rock?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Greg from VA:

Roxy with Eno, 100,000,000,000,000 Points!!!!!
Avatar 6:37pm kat330:

@Greg: Why did you ask?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm George of Troy:

Roxy ain't pandering. This is a stone cold classic. +25 to Fabio.
Avatar 6:38pm dale:

but roxy gets besmirched by ferry's cover album of standards
Avatar 6:38pm glenn:

tenth round
rush 3 (for being canadian)
roxy 7
Avatar 6:38pm Chris from DC:

+10 for Fabio. Well played.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm steve:

another great choice from Fabio. 9/10
Avatar 6:39pm glenn:

eno's not on this
Avatar 6:39pm kat330:

At least Brian Ferry sings in a deeper voice.
Avatar 6:39pm highway ham spill:

Hat's off to Fabio on the Roxy. Cunning move. Touche'!. Clay never saw it coming.
  6:39pm jeff in puna:

Stereolab's toneburst = this track?
  6:39pm TDK60:

A possible theoretical model? : Clay thinks bad pop is wildly interesting; Fab thinks it's weird but not the good weird. Other theories?
5 stong pts. for the Roxy.
Avatar 6:39pm kat330:

Guess he was wearing boxers or boxer briefs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Greg from VA:

@Kat330: End of the year psychic check in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm SeanG:

play gangnam style
Avatar 6:40pm Philo Gristle:

Baby's On Fire would've been pandering +7
Rush Nil Nada Zilch Kaputt
Avatar 6:41pm kat330:

Well, I did have a lot of FUN in the '70s, so a lot is unremembered. But the tight "underpants" just makes sense of the whole phenom of why men want to sound like women. ;)
Avatar 6:41pm Matthew from Pennsylvania:

8/10 for Fab on this Roxy music track ... very good track.
Avatar 6:42pm northguineahills:

+6 for Roxy Music
Avatar 6:43pm dale:

has clay NEVER won when he tabulates?
Avatar 6:43pm glenn:

especially if they're named carol, right, kat?
Avatar 6:43pm dale:

smokin' in the boy room for the win!!
Avatar 6:44pm kat330:

Wow, this comes around so full circle, it's almost a shame not to end it on that note, Glenn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Greg from VA:

@kat330; Thank you, yes indeed, it took 40 years for me to finally learn and understand,…now to forgive all lead singers in tighty whites I've verbally bashed for all that time.
Avatar 6:46pm Balkanized Mexican standoff:

Clay pulls something down-and-dirty from his magic hat. Way to play opossum Clay then come back with a sucker punch Black Oak Arkansas!
  6:46pm postmod:

Hard bubblegum.
Avatar 6:46pm Matthew from Pennsylvania:

7/10 for CP on this one.
Avatar 6:46pm Larst:

another self-inflicted wound Clay. Are feeling ok? Rancid meat and potatoes
Avatar 6:46pm kat330:

This is growling / puling at a different octave level but ....
  6:47pm TDK60:

I saw Black O.A. on Don Kirchner's early 70s TV concert show. Horrid. Except they dropped all their guitars on the floor at the end, with amps still on. That was mildly interesting.
Minus some pts for Clay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Greg from VA:

Black Oak Arkansas,… hmmm,… more like Captain Beefheart between gigs moonlighting and making some mainstream money?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm steve:

3/10, like a second rate version of early Beefheart
Avatar 6:48pm Philo Gristle:

I'd never voluntarily listen to this, but don't HATE it like Rush or Styx.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm SeanG:

+7 for Clay
  6:49pm phat:

I don't think I've ever heard a Black Oak Arkansas tune that didn't make me want to punch somebody.
  6:49pm C in Tiger:

CP won the Rush-Roxy Music round, 7-5.
Avatar 6:51pm Philo Gristle:

Long time Cale fan, not his best but a solid 7.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm George of Troy:

Excellent Cale selection.
  6:51pm C in Tiger:

But Fabio wins with Cale, 8-2.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Greg from VA:

Hey, this is Holy, hats off, time to genuflect and bow down to the art that is now mostly absent in music. Big and many points that won't count in the end, cause art bleeds and makes no money. Cale is transcendent.
Avatar 6:52pm kat330:

@C in Tiger: I haven't been assigning numbers because I didn't see it ever needed. But I'll now assign Fabio + 7 for the Roxy to change your figures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm steve:

another 10 for Fabio
Avatar 6:52pm Chris from DC:

Interesting choice. Yeah, solid +7 for Cale.
Avatar 6:52pm glenn:

eleventh round
b.o.a. 2
cale 8
Avatar 6:52pm kat330:

Well, it was a BIG finish!
  6:53pm phat:

CP wins with this song. I was just thinking about this song after the Jo Jo Gunne track.
Avatar 6:53pm kat330:

THIS is great, Clay. Why'd you have to wait to the tail end??
Avatar 6:53pm dale:

fabs wins that round with early shoe gaze
  6:53pm TDK60:

Cale's a great. This one too paisley cowboy, strings, almost too much reverb. But it would fit in on a jukebox in Phoenix. A few pts. for F.
Avatar 6:53pm showdown shutdown:

Spirit is winner for Clay. Way to pace yourself, you long distance fox!
  6:53pm C in Tiger:

Spriit is very good but this isn't among their best. 7
Avatar 6:53pm glenn:

clay wins this round. the only thing that beats spirit is moby grape or the kinks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm SeanG:

i thought this was gonna be "The Flame" by Cheap Trick
Avatar 6:54pm Chris from DC:

Clay comes back nicely with Spirit. +5
Avatar 6:54pm dale:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Greg from VA:

Nice mainstream music Clay, anyone alive then would now have heard this song times.
  6:55pm TDK60:

Nature's Way is good. But still waitin' to hear more obscure Spirit trax on FMU. 2 pts for Clay, my first plus for him?
Avatar 6:55pm kat330:

But Mother Nature always rules in the end IAE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm steve:

Avatar 6:57pm kat330:

Thank you, fellows! Fun as hell! HAPPY NEW YEAR to youse all!!
Avatar 6:57pm northguineahills:

Usually, Fabio blows Clay out of the water, but this time, Fabio seemed to be just going through the motions. Clay upped his game, but Fabio still came ahead.
Avatar 6:57pm glenn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm George of Troy:

awesome duel--Thanks Clay and Fabio!!
Avatar 6:59pm dale:

roxy, cale, eno, fabs wins. fripp would have made it undeniable
Avatar 6:59pm Philo Gristle:

Fine ending, both teams.
  6:59pm C in Tiger:

Eno gets an 8 to edge Spirit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Greg from VA:

Loved the show, great ending with Eno, tolerated the crap, smiled at the memories and developed a crush on Kat,… not bad for one day of internet radio listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm steve:

great duel! 8/10 for Eno
  3:15pm Mike S.:

Sounds good. Glen, that joke is GRRRREAT! : ))
  3:20pm Mike S.:
