A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Morning and Merry C to all. Exciting times this morning: we're all trapped in our street because of the massive storm last night. Trees down, cars damaged, road impassable. I'm worried that Santa won't be able to get through...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Stanley:

Hi Trouble
Off work today, so tuning in from a cold and windy Scotland.
Christmas-free music, eh? Keep it up, please.

A friend of mine had put "Juba Juba" on a mix tape for me back in the day. Couldn't remember the name of the track, but the flute line had been running through my head since I heard of Dr. Lateef's passing. Thanks for playing!
Avatar 9:33am duke:

DJ Doug of Give the Drummer Some had nice article about Yusef Lateef a couple of years ago blog.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 9:42am PKNY:

@duke - thanks for the link to that WFMU blog page. In that page was a link to a "Give the Drummer Some" session from '09 that is all Dr. Lateef:

anybody here make their own vanilla extract? trying to figure out if i should use vodka or rum...takes 6 months to cure! ack
Avatar 10:37am Sem Chumbo:

@common: might I suggest this? www.huffingtonpost.com...
Avatar 10:38am Sem Chumbo:

@Trouble: neutral, high ABV spirit of good quality might be best.
Avatar 10:39am Brian in UK:

Trouble, just bought some vanilla extract to make some chocolate cake with coffee icing after festivities. Too much hassle to make it from scratch. We do leave a vanilla pod in the sugar and it has a wonderful essence.
  10:40am LovecraftDude888:

Have barely been on WFMU the past 3 weeks, was busy moving apts., and the work never ends, plus holidays. Trying to listen while I get ready to head out later do last minute stuff. Weather all screwed up in NY...was 71 F. Sunday now it's 31! whoohooo
  10:40am bbbbbbb b b b b:

I can ask my Oma for you. She just came in from the Rhineland!
  10:40am pierre:

Anything will do.
Although with the weather in Paris now, hot toddy would beat anything (that would actually still do..)
  10:41am LovecraftDude888:

And I only caught 10 min. of Tom's last show Best Show cause online didn't work, had to tune in on home theater rec. and then i was disappointed it wasn't that great...just being honest, but I love Tom. I guess I expected more special guests or whatever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Stanley:

@ Sem Chumbo - we Scots lead the world in bollocks, if nothing else!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am sugarwolf:

I am waiting for the Icelandic Christmas Cat.
  10:42am LovecraftDude888:

Weather totally bollocked up here. NO idea how to dress. Last two days my uniform was Bowie LOW shirt and Levis jacket...now today could be parka and gloves. no idea. My friend Margaret is in Aberdeenshire 80 miles west of the city in the hills and she sez it's snowy and cold as hell right now. Really harsh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- holy crow! - that beer's 10xs stronger than normal. What could that possibly taste like...
Avatar 10:43am Sem Chumbo:

@Stanley: we here in New Scotland have to agree. Speaking of bollocks, how's your haggis?
  10:44am LovecraftDude888:

I don't even need any gifts...moved and got new big arse TV and blu ray and finished setting that up last night...hung speakers and got new BandDecker drill and went to work doing manly man things....and got it sorted. Watched some of ALIEN to test it. Stonking! Anyway happy Xmas and holidays to all..back later after I get my head together here.
  10:46am bbbbbbb b b b b:

lol, lovecraft
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...up here in my NewHampshuh town just over from Dartmouth, the Crows are Roosting as they do every few years it seems: masses of them cawing all hours & pooping messy smelly poop...A bit Hitchcock if you exit work in the dark evening & there's no one but you & hundered of Crows in a tree in the Church opposite...
  10:48am LovecraftDude888:

I was frustrated could barely have time to connect here
the past month, I had to escape awful apt. slime complex
as I spoke of last time I was on. Oh it sucked! Now I'm in like,
a real apt. what a concept. Also watched Little Odessa as my customary ANTI CHRISTMAS film! Tim Roth fest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Rob W:

Lovely song by the Udaipur choral group. Katie and I are going to be in Udaipur in February! Didn't know about Christianity's presence there (especially as Rajasthan is expected to shift toward Hindu Nationalism unfortunately in upcoming Indian elections) - will have to check into that. And when we were in Buenos Aires last month we met the son of Juana Molina's manager! Trouble, you're playing a very psychic set right now (for Katie and me anyway). Although - can't think of any connection to Brian Harnetty. Wait = we're in Detroit, and it's winter! (There's even snow on the ground here.) Katie has performed with James McNew of Dump (when he was briefly in Special Pillow). But I think the chain definitely ends (ironically) at The Daisy Chain. Thanks for the channeling Trouble and Good Christmas to you and Andy and DJ Icepack and all of you dear listeners in radioland!
  10:53am bbbbbbb b b b b:

I have a brother who might appreciate that sort of tradition too, actually! Any suggested resources I might relay to my dear ten year old brother to get him in the anti-christmas spirit?
  10:54am Bill W:

I am feeling well, and that's no lie Ms Wilcox.
Avatar 10:54am duke:

@rabbit when I worked in Albany, there was an old armory next to our building. In the winter every evening hundreds of crows would descend to the armory roof and have a crowfest. It was creepy.
Avatar 10:54am glenn:

Greenwich Mean Time ‏@GreenwichMean
It's 12.13pm. No mince pies for you, your arse is already the size of a garden shed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Stanley:

@Sem Chumbo - Grandfather has to keep the 'Christmas Haggis' down his underpants until midnight then he whips it out to the delight and screams of the family and then everyone runs out to the tune of Donald where's yer troosers and throws him into the loch breaking the ice beforehand, if necessary.
Avatar 10:55am the glowing one:

I knew that song from somewhere... a past life maybe... before the nuclear war with the chinese
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Adrian in London:

Ooh, that threw me: this Françoise track used to be the ringtone on my old phone!
Avatar 10:59am Trouble:

hello rob and katie!!!! this song is for you! because i am her at fmu all because of you you youuuuu. merry happy!
Avatar 10:59am Sem Chumbo:

@Stanley: so, a fine time had by all, with a soundtrack by Harry Lauder. Glad there's nothing stereotypical about your traditions. Toss me that caber, mon.
