Avatar 12:17pm kat330:

Hi, Irene! Pretty green!
Avatar 12:18pm Philo Gristle:

Hello, Irene and gang. Rare chance to listen live!
  12:18pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Hi Irene, Merry Christmas to you and all the Trukeepers
Avatar 12:19pm kat330:

G'afternoon, Sean! How's the weather in Bristol?
Avatar 12:21pm Philo Gristle:

I guess Major Ben is a Bowie fan? Love the guitar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Irene Trudel:

Happy Krimble, Kat, Philo, Sean and everybody joining us today! Gonna give you all my take on Christmas seasonal music today. Hope it helps all of us keep our heads above the waves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Ike:

Hello! I'm not at work today, so I can enjoy this show for once. Hurrah.
Avatar 12:23pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Irene Trudel:

Yay Ike! Glad you can join us.
Avatar 12:24pm kat330:

Hope it isn't (all) the usual dark Christmas theme already overdone on the FMU family of streams. No longer becomes an antidote if that's all there is to swallow. ;)
Avatar 12:24pm shate shake:

That is the way to cover a Bowie tune for sure, good afternoon, Irene et al.
  12:26pm Mystrmuzk:

Wonderful start, Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Ike:

To clarify, I listen to a lot of FMU at work, but Mondays from 12 to 3 are often tricky for Irene-type sounds. But they're brilliant for a day off. Sounds fantastic so far!
  12:27pm Mystrmuzk:

Kat - now does that sound like Irene?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Irene Trudel:

@Kat, there may be a little darkness in here but light will creep in, I promise.
Avatar 12:29pm kat330:

@Mystrmuzk: Nope, not at all!

@Irene: Well, then, that's a nice balance. I say balance in all things at all times. :)
  12:29pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Hi Kat, sorry in the delay in replying but just cycled home from work with the rain hammering down, thank goodness for the WFMU app and Irene's wonderful music to keep me going. The weather today has been filthy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Maggie B.:

Merry Xmas Irene and everyone! Irene, i am loving this Haden/Metheny. so gorgeous.
Avatar 12:31pm kat330:

@Sean: Oooh, so sorry! We had the pelting rain Friday night into Saturday. But the temps were near 70-degrees F. Were you on an acoustic or motor bike?
  12:34pm Jack:

That Haden/Metheny was gorgeous! (so was the Allison). I am at work, wanted to just veg, have to dig that one up.
Avatar 12:34pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

...whereas here in DC it's a ghost town. Staying local during the holidays is most awesome.
Avatar 12:34pm kat330:

Irene, the last part of "Stone Shoal" matched beautifully with a track the Jeff's were playing. Stone cool accidental mashup it was.
  12:34pm dave in a cave:

feels good to be at work w/ Irene and no one else around. may peace rain on all eve's eve workers
  12:35pm KP:

Irene, a reminder. Travel in the New York area is dreadful around the holidays.
Avatar 12:36pm kat330:

@Jack: Your sentence parses interestingly, having to dig up a wanted vegetable. Tuber to be sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Irene Trudel:

Really, @KP?? I hadn't noticed. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Maggie B.:

oof, i avoided my already epic commute today - working from home.
Avatar 12:38pm kat330:

Love these fan club bits. Our local WFPK always plays these on Christmas Day, usually while we're on rural roads going to 'Gootee to see my Uncle Charlie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm mariano:

Wow, Irene: like I was commenting during Liz's show, I'm laid up with a head cold and sore throat, medicating and drinking hot toddies, and this Beatles thing is about as perfect a selection for the present circumstances. Thanks so much!
Avatar 12:42pm kat330:

Ha! Hope this falls into the "light" category! Thanks, Irene! :)
Avatar 12:42pm Philo Gristle:

That sounded familiar! :)
Avatar 12:43pm kat330:

For you, Philo, I imagine OVER familiar. ;)
  12:43pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

@Kat, on my bicycle, just drying out now, that Pat Metheny track was wonderful.
Avatar 12:47pm Sem Chumbo:

In time for Mr. Armstrong, that is so good. Hiya, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Ike:

Y'all seen good things on Netflix lately? I just set my dad up w/Netflix Instant, but don't know it that well myself. He's quite pleased to binge on British detective show "The Fall" so far. Somehow I don't think he's going to go for my Farscape recommendation.
Avatar 12:51pm Philo Gristle:

@Ike On Hulu Plus we've enjoyed some Doctor Who, but I think that might fall in line with Farscape. Tongs of great Brit tv shows, not sure what would be available on Netflix tho.
Avatar 12:52pm kat330:

Stick a salad fork in those "tongs" hunaja.
Avatar 12:52pm Philo Gristle:

Tongs?! Well I did watch that one classy Hammer Horror flick, Terror of the Tongs, a wee while back....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm mariano:

@Philo: I've just discovered, probably years after the fact, that a lot of BBC stuff is on Youtube, a lot of it full-length and even HD. I stream directly to my TV. Such good shows there they don't play on BBC America.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Mike East:

@Ike - Luther is a decent British detective show on Netflix. Also lots of Dr Who. We just finished season one of The Arrow which we liked. Lots of other good stuff. depends on what kind of stuff your dad's into and how much of it he's seen already.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Mike East:

also really liked Orange is the new Black
Avatar 12:56pm Philo Gristle:

@Mariano I think it happened fairly recently, when they allowed for longer uploads. I think they were limited to 10 minutes before google bought them. But yeah, too much to be able to watch in a lifetime!
Avatar 12:58pm Philo Gristle:

@Mike Luther is the one with Idris Elba, right? Its on Hulu too. We've been watching Doctor Who, too, alongside Veep, Walking Dead and Burn Notice on dvd...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Mike East:

Yes, except I just call him Stringer Bell.

I got into Walking Dead on netflix, too. So many characters to hate on that show, so its nice to know that odds are good that they won't be there long. Except Rick. Why can't we get rid of Rick?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Whosondephone:

One of my holiday WFMU Favorites!
Avatar 1:02pm kat330:

@Mike: Haha! Yeah, his best moment was when he was have aural hallucinations with phone calls from beyond the walking dead.
Avatar 1:03pm kat330:

Wow, strange sync up with Whosondephone.
  1:03pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Joseph Spence, awesome, could do a passable imitation after few glasses of port
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm mariano:

@Sean: mmmm, port! A nice tawny port by the fire. Drinking cognac hot toddies right now, strictly for medicinal purposes, of course.
Avatar 1:04pm v k:

"Truckin' Trees for Christmas" by Red Simpson - an honest, uplifting Christmas tune
  1:06pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

I'll start the ball rolling, you played a wonderful version of "Silent Night" by Marcus Roberts, that would be fab if you could squeeze that one in
Avatar 1:08pm Philo Gristle:

Thanks, Irene, for playing Kat's little ditty from me, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Ike:

Mike East, as a cable addict, I'm caught up on Luther S3, the final season. Vs. the first 2, it's disappointing and *not* credible. It's not on Netflix yet anyway. Also I'm current on Arrow S2, which keeps improving impressively. Check out Nikita too. It's also surprisingly good. My dad won't go for Arrow or Nikita surely. We have OITNB queued up, sounds good.
Avatar 1:10pm kat330:

@Sean: Did you yet watch your "Breaking Bad" specials?
Avatar 1:11pm Philo Gristle:

@Mike Can't say Walking Dead is too Christmasy, or maybe all that great, but it IS addictive.
Avatar 1:12pm kat330:

Wouldn't mind December in Brazil. A couple of weeks at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Mike East:

@Ike - the same guy who recommended Arrow recommended Nikita (the guy at the parking garage). I definitely gotta check it out.
Also, we just enjoyed the Michael Cera movie: Crystal Fairy and the Magical Cactus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Ike:

Irene, BBC America has been great w/the same-day premieres of Dr. Who for a few years now. It's strange how Brits get NEW episodes on Xmas. U.S. TV is a wasteland on major holidays. So much so that tiny BBC America beats virtually everything else in the ratings every Xmas lately!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Kat, not yet, I am prolonging the anticipation. Really getting into "Fringe" which I think Ike recommended so thank you, sir. Just started "Walking Dead" which i not available on Netflix over here, had to fork out for a dvd set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Irene Trudel:

I know @Ike! Looking forward to the new Doctor Who episode. I'm gonna be home watching TV on Christmas, celebrating quietly.
Avatar 1:19pm kat330:

Philo and I quite enjoyed "Fringe," up to the last season when it flagged more than a bit.
Avatar 1:19pm slush iron:

Why does her voice (Hot Sardines) make me feel so dirty?
Avatar 1:20pm kat330:

Beginning to wonder if J.J. Abrams, who has wonderful concepts and interesting story arcs, simply can't successfully end a series.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Sean in Bristol UK:

I was a huge Doctor Who fan when I was a lot younger, during the sixties but I seem to remember cowering behind the sofa most of the time!
  1:21pm Ted:

The Pink Martini reminds me of Mary Margaret O'Hara. Hey didn't MMO do a Christmas album? Do you have that Irene?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The warm, rainy weather over the weekend melted the snow here. It needs to turn cold again so the crocuses don't sprout up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Ike:

Sean, that can't be worth it. Walking Dead, sigh -- never seen such a stunning gulf between dismal quality of characters & dialogue vs. brilliant makeup and action direction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Irene Trudel:

@slush iron, I think that's the point, and maybe it's just the Edith Piaf rendition, but the Hot Sardines are a great throwback to an earlier time. Just saw them play live a few nights ago.
Avatar 1:24pm Hamper Diver:

@Irene, I bet that Sardines show was fun, they sound like the 'fun' type.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Ike, my problem has been that since the end of BB there has been nothing that get's close t the quality of that series. The bar has been raised really high with BB
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Ike:

Sean, also, I hear that Farscape is back on Netflix UK *and* USA, so hit that, if you haven't.
Avatar 1:25pm Philo Gristle:

Kind of a shame all of Howe Gelb's proteges are finding success more than he ever did, with M. Ward and Calexico, even Friends of Dean Martinez...
Avatar 1:27pm kat330:

@Philo: Probably something to do with integrity levels.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Ike, thanks for the recommendation, that series has been on my radar. Out of curiosity, what part of the States do you live?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Great set, Irene, especially the Beach Boys tune. The Christmas spirit is slowly starting to creep into this Bristolian Scrooge!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Ike:

Sean, I live in NJ and work in NYC. Close enough to volunteer at FMU, but don't get many chances lately because of work.
Avatar 1:32pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

nooo! Don't give up, keep fighting, Scroogie! We can BEAT this thing!
Avatar 1:33pm Philo Gristle:

@Sean You have to lower your expectations after Walter White. It'll be a decade before it gets knocked down the throne, methinks.
Avatar 1:33pm Parq:

This Allen Sherman track is an essential component of an old-fashioned Chez Parq Christmas.
Avatar 1:34pm kat330:

Before the playlist revealed who it was and before the unmistakable harmonies kicked in, I thought that Beach Boys track was TMBG for a moment. Who was lead singer on that, Irene?
Avatar 1:39pm kat330:

Re: TMBG, they shared a cool holiday song several days ago called "Celebration" (if time for any requests).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Philo, you are right, there is the off-shoot series about Saul Goodman to look forward to
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Ike:

Looking fwd. to Dave Hill's FMU show. Liked him on 7 Sec. Delay last week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm mariano:

Oh, Brother John! Completely forgot about this one!
Avatar 1:55pm ticklemoon:

such a touching message of....Christmas....and....snow.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Sean in Bristol UK:

This is so beautiful, ok, I submit to this wonderful time of year
Avatar 2:01pm kat330:

Nice fiddle indeed.
Avatar 2:02pm doca:

is this james taylor thee james taylor?
Avatar 2:03pm Philo Gristle:

Didn't David Johansen do a version of this with the Harry Smiths? I really dug that one...
Avatar 2:04pm kat330:

@doca: Certainly must be. BTW, that dog in your avatar has the most eerily human-like expression.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Irene, just downloaded the Mark O'Connor track, worth getting the rest of the album? That track was a thing of beauty.
Avatar 2:07pm doca:

@kat: that's why that's my avatar. I'm always amazed by animals doing human-like faces but this one always makes me laugh.
Avatar 2:08pm Parq:

Yeah, I have that Fahey CD too. Annoying that they couldn't release the entirety of the two albums, and also the third one, "Popular Songs of Christmas". But hey, it's nice to have an hour of Fahey Christmas guitar to pop into the CD player.
Avatar 2:08pm kat330:

I think the expression reflects the dog's feeling about that hat on his head.
Avatar 2:09pm Philo Gristle:

Bikoff, wonder if the Guzzi is a Moto Guzzi motor-bike reference. Only Guzzi I know of...
Avatar 2:10pm doca:

I've made a t-shirt of that "Guitar Soli" Christmas album by Fahey.

@kat: He's happy for his birthday. The cool thing is that if you google his photo, you'll find this is the second time he makes the same face. Surely is a child on costume.
Avatar 2:11pm kat330:

Nothing shouts Merry Christmas to me more than dinosaur erotica.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm mariano:

Widening gyre? Isn't that from Yeats' "The Second Coming?" Probably remembering wrong...
Avatar 2:16pm doca:

@kat: sorry Kat, but I had to share that sentence of yours on facebook. Do you want me to give credits for it?
Avatar 2:17pm kat330:

@doca: Please! I have a lot of "bon mots" on my own Tumblr. (no FB) :)
  2:17pm don:

Saw Linda Draper perform last week; beautiful songs, even better live---thanks Irene for introducing her music to me/us listeners---
Avatar 2:18pm Philo Gristle:

For just a second I thought this was Jeff Buckley....
Avatar 2:18pm kat330:

Love Ms. Orton.
Avatar 2:20pm kat330:

And this is such a fine arrangement, too, on "Candles."
Avatar 2:21pm doca:

@kat: it is done, credits are given with a link to your tumblr (:
Avatar 2:22pm kat330:

Well, thank you, doca, and I hope you get all the most wonderful dinosaur erotica for Christmas! :)
Avatar 2:24pm kat330:

[I hear Emily Brontesaurus and T. Rex make a great pair.]
Avatar 2:29pm kat330:

Ah, another of my fave vocalists. Great set, Irene.
Avatar 2:30pm Philo Gristle:

One Nil for Finn.
Avatar 2:51pm Philo Gristle:

Thanks again, Irene, for playing this. My personal fave of Kat's Christmas set.
Avatar 2:52pm Philo Gristle:

And back-to-back with Tom Rapp!
Avatar 2:53pm kat330:

Irene, whatever the female equivalent of mensch, that is you. Thank you for finding some things I create worthy of your air space, dear lady!
Avatar 2:55pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

WHOA, missed me some prime Tom Rapp...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Mike East:

nicely done, kat

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:56pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Thank you Irene and thank you for all the wonderful shows this year, the live guests, just fantastic,
Avatar 2:56pm Parq:

Thanks for a great themed show, Miss Irene. And thanks for "Gaudete" -- never knew that was a Christmas carol.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Brian in UK:

Happy Christmas Irene and folks. John Fahey is getting a caning this year. Yipee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Irene Trudel:

Have a happy, safe holiday everybody!
