Nuts, I just missed Gene Russell. I have his "Talk To My Lady" record. I think I'd be afraid to actually talk to his lady. Mr. Russell looks to be a bit of a bruiser.

Do the Mouse! You can do it in your house. Do the Mouse!
(The Gen-Xers know...)
Avatar 10:44am Joe McG:

@12539: Somebody needs to cover it and get that one in!
Avatar 10:45am Jeff:

Okay, I tried asking The Internet. Somebody says the opening theme to Pee Wee's Playhouse is an hommage to Quiet Village, but written by (Martin Denny fan) Mark Mothersbaugh!

Yes, that Mark Mothersbaugh.
Avatar 10:48am Marcel M:

A bottle, your memory and me... that is an awesome line.
  10:50am P-90:

---But the Pee-Wee closing theme was different. I don't 'member if it was a Mark B. original. When he's hired to do music for movies/tv/etc. he typically composes a theme and selects existing music for other bits on the show. Good Question about the closing
Avatar 10:50am herb.nyc:

THE NEW HOPE, great band name, and makes sense for 1969. (yes, "a bottle, yr memory and me" is a great line - it immed'ly makes me think of song "he's got you". what's the line, "i've got your picture, he's got you" i think.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Tome:

good set Joe wtg !!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Lewis:

@jeff - that sounds very believable. Mothersbaugh has done a lot of sound track stuff where you wouldn't necessary expect it (e.g. rocket power and the one with the little kids on Nick and lots more)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Ken From Hyde Park:

I hope this isn't too harsh, but... . Between the bottle, your memory and me, one of the three isn't going to make it through the night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am tim from champaign:

@cecile - agreed! Those goddamn kids with their energy drinks and smart phones need some pull up their damn pants comeuppance!
Avatar 10:54am Joe McG:

Thanks, Tome! Havin' fun.
  10:54am P-90:

@Lewis + Jeff: that Pee wee job was when he was breaking in, helped him get those other gigs later
  10:55am P-90:

@KFHP: haha! good one
Avatar 10:59am Joe McG:

@Ken: I'm still trying to figure out which one!
Avatar 10:59am duke:

@KFHP Great line, sounds like the start of a C&W song.
Avatar 10:59am Roberto:

Yep, Mark and Bob both worked on the Rugrats. I remember being surprised by that back when my kids was little and they was watchin' that there show.
Avatar 11:00am Cecile:

and Mark Mothersbaugh took over from Todd Rundgren for the music on that show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am tim from champaign:

Hey cecile - I heard it's mighty cold up in your neck of the woods. How cold is it currently?
Avatar 11:01am Cecile:

Pee Wee's Playhouse, I mean.
Avatar 11:01am Cecile:

It's about -5. It sucks.
Avatar 11:02am Cecile:

invictus was a great record label
Avatar 11:03am Roberto:

You haven't heard the Joe Cocker version? Dude.
Avatar 11:04am herb.nyc:

in ref to the cold, i'm reminded of & paraphrasing a PJ O'ROURKE line now: "if the liberals are so fond of the outdoors & the environment, then let's just leave the homeless alone"
Avatar 11:04am βrian:

"Joe Cocker, Live and in pain!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Mike Noble:

confirmed, duck dunn & taylor mccashen wrote hitchcock railway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am tim from champaign:

Woo doggies, cecile. It's about +5 here. It usually doesn't get this cold in central IL until February.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Mike Noble:

@Joe I don't know if wfmu has it, but there's a band on Slumberland called The Terry Malts (who have appeared on EFD's show) who put out a flexi cover of "I could be happy" this year
  11:08am P-90:

Mark B. was an early pioneer of the practice of a single composer/arranger doing entire scores alone, using synths, samples, etc.
Danny Elfman has since become the king of this (Simpson's theme, almost all of Tim Burton's movies,...)
Avatar 11:08am Kurt Gottschalk:

ok, you made me laugh out loud holding the record cover up to the mic for us.
Avatar 11:09am Cecile:

it usually doesn't get this cold until January. ugh.
Avatar 11:10am Kurt Gottschalk:

there's generally two friday the 13ths per year but last year there were three (the first year i was on fridays). next year there's only one, which is good as i'm running out of ideas.

mornin' joe.
Avatar 11:12am Joe McG:

Hey, King Kurt! I think your Friday the 13th shows are fun. Looking forward to #6 next year!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am common:

hey ya kurt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Mike Noble:

I cannot find the title of the David Band painting on the cover of "I could be happy," so I cannot determine whether or not it is a portrait of Pete Townsend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am tim from champaign:

Who plays guitar on "Live at the Whiskey"? Herbie played with some killer guitar players during this time. Also, did Herbie play topless at the Whiskey?
Avatar 11:15am PKNY:

Feeling this Herbie Mann track, will have to see if I this particular record at home among the other Herbie records I've picked up.
  11:16am P-90:

Back in the day, it was occasionally female patrons who "played topless" at the Whiskey
Avatar 11:16am Kurt Gottschalk:

hey common. thx, joe. herbie mann grand slam, yo!
Avatar 11:17am Joe McG:

@Mike: Thanks for trying! @tim: It's Sonny Sharrock, who we'll hear from shortly.
Avatar 11:18am herb.nyc:

TERRY MALTS flexi "i could be happy"? oh so excellent. (is there a WFMU person who actively collects flexis?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am tim from champaign:

Man, what a cut!
  11:22am P-90:

@herb: DJ MAC collects, archives, curates, and reads and writes about the whole history of Flexis
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Mike Noble:

@herb.nyc were you lucky enough to get a flexi? actually i'm not even sure if they sold out. Mac runs a makeshift flexi museum, but i don't know if terry malts would be up his alley.
Avatar 11:24am Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Mike Noble:

here's that flexi altered images cover: soundcloud.com...
Avatar 11:25am PKNY:

@P-90: to be fair, Herbie decided to rock a shirt for the cover of that record. Also, I figured it had to be Roy Ayers on the vibes, and searching for the cover confirmed it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am tim from champaign:

@Cecile - good one! My favorite heckle is "Go back to France!"
Avatar 11:27am slater:

Avatar 11:28am Joe McG:

@slater: The B of this LP is great, too, a Rufus Thomas song that Sharrock explodes in about 3/4 of the way through.

Herbie Mann was a surprise.
I must admit that I only have a scratchy copy of memphis underground, thus I maybe not really appreciated this artist enough.

  11:31am Sumpin':

This song sounds like masturbation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Parq:

Interesting thing I just recently learned about Sharrock. He was responsible for the bracing guitar-driven music on the dizzy talk show spoof "Space Ghost Coast to Coast", which proved that, contrary to what your mother or your grade school teacher told you, people *will* pay you to just sit around and act goofy all day.
  11:31am earrie:

@Joe McG A pleasure.
Avatar 11:31am Cheri Pi:

Oh man, this album reminds me of my black cat who passed away last year just before Christmas, RIP Lio. wrapping gifts without you will never be the same.
Avatar 11:32am Cecile:

Parq, yeah. But Zorak always cracked me up.
Avatar 11:32am herb.nyc:

@mike noble - i don't have the TERRY MALTS flexi. i just love old school things, like cassettes and print zines. and thanks for DJ MAC info, you too @P-90.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am tim from champaign:

Mr. Sharrock is also a television show scholar.
Avatar 11:33am Cecile:

this song title sounds like something Drexciya would come up with.
Avatar 11:33am Joe McG:

@MIke: That album looks cool! I hope we get it here.

"Go back to France" haha those Red State types are so witty. But yeah, Cecile, sometimes nothing's like a good BOOOOO!

'Cile, I've heard that yelled at particularly ill-cast burlesque shows.
Avatar 11:40am Cecile:

Don't even get me started about burlesque shows. I don't mind when people work in the tradition, but when they recreate old, offtensive routines scene for scene, ye Gods.
Avatar 11:42am northguineahills:

Never got the burlesque thing myself, although I do like old-timey burlesque music.

  11:48am P-90:

Are we talking about the quaint, gentle, relatively tame stuff like slowly pulling off the gloves, wriggling w/feather boa, leaving the foundation garments on, etc? It gets boring fast, but it's like soft R-rated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am KevinfromBayRidge:

No, we're talking about insulting routines about Asians and Native Americans. Not quaint.

Do people who go to burlesque strip shows actually get offended? I'm guessing burlesque today is like something more for the ladies? I don't think dudes go to strip clubs and get huffy over dance routines.

Thanks for listening, everybody!
Avatar 11:56am Cecile:

In this particular troupe. Not all!

A lot of people have modern clothes and modern music.
And other people use the old style to satirize the present time.

Also, there can be a lot of great singers and acrobats in burlesque. Not here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Guido (Cologne):

Beautiful show Joe!

I like the music. I like the dancing (if it's not just ass-wiggling). I like the sets. I like the corny MCs. But a lot of the humor if not dodgy, is outright offensive.
