A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hi Trouble! Checking in from Hackspace, Hackney, London
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Mike East:

just watched Nothing Can Hurt Me yesterday morning. So good. Makes me want to be in a rock n roll band again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Guido (Cologne):

Topic on bying music:

Trying support hard working musicians, I have a habit try to buy their records at the show, since I can be sure that larger part of the money go to the artists themselves and not distributors, retailers, online platforms and stuff.

On the other hand, if I want to be able to really enjoy the show, I do better if I'm familiar with the (new) material. That means I need to buy in advance.

How do you handle it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Mike East:

buy tee shirts at the show, Guido.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Guido (Cologne):

Always those horrible Chinese made shirts ...
... but know what you mean ...
... unfortunately I'm not into the average merch-stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Mike East:

I'm going through my records and doing a purge before we move this week. Getting rid of a bunch of reggae. Funny that you're playing a bunch of reggae this morning...I'm going between listening to the show and giving a few discs one last spin.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Guido (Cologne):

... by the way, as I hear Bert Kempfert right now, you should watch out for the original "A Man Could Be Killed" Soundtrack where the "Strangers in the Night" theme is from. It's superior from all Sinatra and stuff.

No, wish we did. We hire some ground from the council. We have a small garden in the middle of town just big enough for the chickens.
Avatar 10:17am Brian in UK:

mauri do you do much smoking of fish and meat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am mauri:

No not really. I have a friend who coldsmokes salmon. Hunters usually saltdry reindeer but I don't know anyone who would smoke meat.

Avatar 11:11am Brian in UK:

What do you mean by hard cider, trouble?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- maybe you could ask these cidermakers in our little town here :
- they were actually featured in Michael Pollan's 'Botany of Desire' film as people bucking the mono-culture trend.

  11:20am ?:

Sugaring the brew with organic raisins sounds pretty smart..
Avatar 11:21am βrian:

I love good cider, hard and dry, or soft and sweet. For the fresh stuff, I suggest adding a quarter cup grated fresh ginger per gallon. Let sit overnight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am tim from champaign:

My wife is a big hard cider fan. This brewery/cider mill is here current favorite: vandermill.com...
Avatar 11:22am Brian in UK:

Could I recommend perry, made with pears. It is a wonderful refreshing drink, not quite as demanding as cider but possibly harded to brew. It is fermenting time right now with both crops ready. It has been a good year over here for both fruits.
If you can get downwind of any of these brews, go to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am tim from champaign:

Man, warm cider with a couple shots of spiced rum is deeelicious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Patrick:

great show today!! it was wonderful seeing you last week! how was the Sillman show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...mm- keep talking - maybe I'll have a cider instead of Guinness tonight (though that bives me iron & stuff!) @ the Tues. Irish Trad. session @ the local...ginger is good! - not sure I've tried pear cider yet
...hate to admit it - my problem is anything too sweet w/ alcohol can give me a headache - altho' there's a range of tastes in ciders...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- surely everyone in the UK knows cider? Is the term 'hard' not used in Britspeak (unless it's cider w/ a tough/severe personality)?
Avatar 11:29am βrian:

My first few weeks in France, I was drinking cider without realizing it was alcoholic. But I knew it was good. I finally got a clue. Sneaky stuff.
Avatar 11:30am Brian in UK:

I have yet to find a cider over here less than 5% usually around 7%+. You might need a press for the apples to produce a good scrumpy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- man, that Malian stuff kills !
Avatar 11:32am βrian:

By soft cider, I mean freshly pressed and completely unprocessed. Nothing like it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- hard in the UK indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am braveness23:

I make 'Apple Jack' from time to time. Time consuming but easy. Get pressed apple cider without preservatives (pasteurized is OK). Put it into a gallon carboy (glass bottle). Put in a pack of champagne yeast. Cover and shake vigorously. Put an airlock on the carboy and store in a warmish dark place. You can leave it to ferment really as long as you like but a week or two should be plenty. Pour your hard cider into a plastic tupperware container and put into a freezer. The water in the cider will freeze but the booze part will not. It will be slushy. Put the slush into a colander and allow the liquid part to drain out. Discard the ice or save to use as the base of mixed drinks. If you like you can put the boozy liquid part back in the freezer and repeat the process. Each time you do this the boozy part becomes more boozy. This is called Apple Jack.
  11:34am Marmalade Kitty:

I've never heard it called "hard-cyder" before :) I take the alcohol for granted!
Avatar 11:34am Brian in UK:

@βrian the cidres from Normandy are quite different from our Somerset and Hereford brews.
Soft cider sounds like what I mean by scrumpy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Greg from Bloomfield:

Aw, no! RIP Junior Murvin. I wanted to call my old band's album "Rescue Jah Children", but I got voted down.
Avatar 11:36am βrian:

I grew up in an apple state. We used to fill our jugs straight from the press spigots at the mill. Yum.
Avatar 11:38am Brian in UK:

We have had a problem here with cheap very strong cider, it seems to be getting better, the problem not the cider.
Yes, we know cider but the 'hard'?
Avatar 11:39am Brian in UK:

Now calvados (apple brandy) is another delight. A lovely digestif not quite eau de vie but close.

Avatar 11:40am kirk from beer city usa:

first time hearing this new mazzy star. sounds great. is it out on vinyl, anybody know?
  11:41am Marmalade Kitty:

@Brian-"white lightening" cider is pretty hard! but thats all nasty chemicals and only 8% apple..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- one's always heard about cider-drinkers in the UK as juvenile low-rent hooligans or something, which never made sense since cider's weak here - but now you explain it's often 7+ over there (& presumably goes down easily)...
  11:43am Bar:

Digestif as sambuca does it, you can't get.
Avatar 11:44am βrian:

Soft cider isn't actually a term. We're using it here to distinguish fresh cider from alcoholic (hard) cider. So there's cider and hard cider.
Avatar 11:44am Brian in UK:
