The final stretch!

Evening friends and neighbors.

Yes! It's starting right now!

We are Dave. Resistance is Futile.
  9:09pm LovecraftDude888:

Had to take a ride out East to North Fork of LI today for various reasons: verdict, it was foggy, quiet, and boring! mainly. Southold. Puts where I live in perspective, I guess. I don't think WFMU reaches that far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Dow will soon pass 16,000
...so glad to know we will all be unimaginably wealthy...for a rising tide infallibly lifts all ships...
Avatar 9:12pm Droll:

I like foggy, quiet, and boring. That perfectly describes the island I used to, and PSS presently, lives on.
Avatar 9:14pm Dave Mandl:

Hey there Droll, DLBRRN63, LovecraftDude, pss, 12539. Good to see you all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm pacific standard simon:

True -- it's what I moved here for.
  9:15pm LovecraftDude888:

It was fine, I don't mind. I rarely get out that far east on L.I. but sometimes. Hey Dave, cheers! I know I'm moving to a new apt by Dec. 2nd cause my current place is f..d too many arses and Slime People...tossers. And I can't deal with having an upstairs floor anymore...have crazy cat lady upstairs and she is fecked in der head
  9:15pm LovecraftDude888:

WFMU and David Croneneberg movies are only thing to assuage the hell here!
  9:16pm LovecraftDude888:

Cronenberg, sorry....fingers fried
Avatar 9:17pm Droll:

By "upstairs floor" do you mean you live in a walkup?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm David L.B. is RRN63:

'Better to rule in Hell than serve in Heaven
- for the Mind is its' own place - & can make a Hell of Heaven. or a Heaven of Hell'...
  9:19pm LovecraftDude888:

I'm in a small garden apt. type complex, ground floor, two floors total, I'm sort of off to my self but place is gone straight down the drain, in many ways, and yeah one person above me in 1 bdrm apt. She is all kinds of nuts.
  9:20pm LovecraftDude888:

But I have a nasty evil landlord co. renting from, so I'm ditching them finally....thank God.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm pacific standard simon:

@LovecraftDude -- just wait until you complain about it, and find out that THERE IS NO UPSTAIRS APARTMENT! oooooooooooooo
  9:23pm LovecraftDude888:

watched Lou Reed Berlin Live at least 3x since Lou passed...so darned great. I kind of like that guy that sings Candy Says on that..... no no I'm moving to new place top floor apt. no tossers above me at all! Nada. nobody. Thank goodness. But apts...you never know how it's really gonna be till you get in there. Whatever. Bring it on. back to the music....
Avatar 9:23pm Droll:

I had tweekers living underneath me once. Loud 3am thumpa-thumpa music, fighting, outdoor puking... Actually I moved from there to Bainbridge Island. No coincidence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm pacific standard simon:

The rats in the walls....
  9:25pm LovecraftDude888:

ha! Sounds like loads o fun. I have some Slime Family that moved in here the past year or so...total trashos. Not even entertaining trashos. Just annoying and obnoxious. Someone claimed to me they were mafia but I was like oh bollocks. Nonsense. The Rats in the Walls would be better than most
of my actual neighbors....
  9:25pm Marmalade Kitty:

Good evening and goodnight!! not lurking but listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm pacific standard simon:

I like walking down scary, unlit roads without sidewalks in the night -- and the scary part is NOT fear of muggers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...for that apartment but one hoary floor above my own - which is not - is where Lovecraft composed his symphonies of other dimensions. Can you not see? I cannot be Mad if I elaborate these occurrences in such concise detail!...
  9:27pm LovecraftDude888:

Hell Wind Titan Blur The three lobed burning Slime person!
Avatar 9:28pm Droll:

pss, You pay extra to not even have shoulders on those roads. I forgot I used to carry a flashlight to get to/from the bus stop!
  9:29pm LovecraftDude888:

Bainbridge Island sounds rad. I don't know deek about that part of the USA...never been to Seattle or Portland sadly. I have tons of friends there though, or a good few. I was doing a lot of research on Toronto....that place rules, good record shops, bookstores, etc. some real culture in Toronto. At least so it sounds like.
  9:33pm LovecraftDude888:

I was in Montreal once for a day or two in 1979 and it was.....real cold. On a crap skiing trip with no er, skiing available, weather killed it. Just recall freezing our arses off, eating cheeseburgers and stuff and going into a French/English bookstore. that was all.
Avatar 9:35pm Droll:

Montreal looks (and sounds) nothing like North America, but Toronto is just another Megalopolis (with Tim Horton's).
Avatar 9:36pm duke:

This Wm Parker cut is wonderful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- yeah.
  9:37pm LovecraftDude888:

Yeah Montreal seemed pretty different and bloody cold but
not much like NYC at all. But I was again, 11 years old. Someone i know tried driving into Toronto city limits earlier this year and had to bail due to traffic jams!! Urghh. I never heard of William Parker but this sounds amazing. My friend knows
Daniel Carter, the downtown jazz and improv dude.
  9:39pm LovecraftDude888:

Wow don't even know Tim Hortons...we don't have any on LI as far as I know. They tried opening a Denny's in Levittown two years ago and I think it bombed. I read it was dirty nasty and roach infested!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm pacific standard simon:

Right now, Seattle driving is screwed up because of the tunnel boring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm pacific standard simon:

Artisokka sounds kinda like Gorky's Zygotic whatever.
  9:45pm LovecraftDude888:

Sounds like fun. Wow sinkholes formed, etc.! Great. They were going to do the bridge to CT thing and keep proposing it for LI but I think it's never gonna happen, nobody wants it in their town.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm pacific standard simon:

Praise the Elder Gods!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm pacific standard simon:

Hey Droll -- you know the amazing thing about Bainbridge? Less than 10 miles from the birthplace of Starbucks, and we still don't have one. Fought to keep it off the island.
Avatar 9:49pm Droll:

pss, Let me show you the McDonalds that "snuck in"!
  9:50pm A:

Avatar 9:52pm Droll:

I used to work in the area where that sinkhole formed. I was there during the 2001 Nisqually earthquake, and everyone was amazed the fill underneath Pioneer Square didn't turn to slush. They had to bring a diver in to inspect the ferry dock before we could get home to Bainbridge, another one of those "adds 3-5 hours to the commute" days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm pacific standard simon:

Oh, I know we have McDonalds. But we also have several bakeries where I can work, because there's no frozen-pastry-importing Star-fucking-bucks.
  9:56pm LovecraftDude888:

I once spoke online a few years back to some goth rivethead chick from Pioneer Square and she was out there that's for sure. She claimed she worked as a phlebotomist at some crime lab or hospital or both over there. Oh that MCDs the coup de grace is it's on High School Rd NE!! Nice! That figures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm pacific standard simon:

Things have improved since 2001. If I got stuck on the Seattle side, now, I could down a few Maker's Marks at the ferry bar and read my Kindle.
Avatar 9:57pm Droll:

. o O ( Station ID already? It seems like the Final Stretch just started... )
  9:59pm LovecraftDude888:

I hear Powells Books in Portland is rad. Closest we have is The Strand NYC and that's not as great as once it was. It's ok.
Avatar 9:59pm Dave Mandl:

Yup, 2157 is Legal ID Time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm pacific standard simon:

Powell's IS wonderful. I've contemplated a long weekend vacation in Portland just for that.
Avatar 10:01pm Dave Mandl:

Powell's is good. I was there a few years ago. Better than the Strand for my money. I've always had trouble finding things at the Strand, but it's been ages since I've been there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm pacific standard simon:

DaveM, how did you know that I'm queer for clarinet music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm pacific standard simon:

Green Apple in San Francisco is not bad, but I couldn't spend an entire day there, as I could at Powell's.
Avatar 10:04pm Dave Mandl:

PSS: I had no idea, no. Maybe I can play you some Patrick Portella.
  10:04pm LovecraftDude888:

Yeah the Strand can be annoying esp. these days, but
always really. I was dying that Miriam Linna used to work
there, I had no idea. But that was long before I ever knew about it and was a tyke when punk kicked off! God I'm ready to go get on the plane for Powell's right now! Sounds sick. But first I have to move and stuff...I can't even go to WFMU record fair. boo hoo
Avatar 10:07pm Droll:

When you folks pick a date for the road trip to Powell's Portland, let me know. Bonus: Food truck heaven. I'll see yinz there.
  10:08pm LovecraftDude888:

I had opp. to buy sealed Thel. Monk Columbia Years box two weeks back...I think I goofed, didn't buy it. Might need to correct that. I'm more of a piano jazz guy, although I dig Miles Davis, C. Parker, Ornette, and Coltrane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm pacific standard simon:

Bring it, Dave. My favorites are Eric Dolphy, and just about anyone playing Poulenc's Sonata for Piano and Clarinet.
Avatar 10:09pm Dave Mandl:

Totally forgot: I've got this new Doug Wieselman record! All solo clarinet, I think.
  10:10pm LovecraftDude888:

Dolphy is great, for sure, don't even know him as well as I should.
How about some Xenakis Dave. to clear the airwaves haha! Just kidding. That dude was out there.... Xenakis makes Diamanda Galas sound like Lady Ga Ga
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm pacific standard simon:

Sounds like some Frippertronics on clarinet!
Swag For Life Member 10:11pm 12539:

Yay for Wieselman!
  10:11pm ttrish:

Sounds excellent.
Avatar 10:11pm Dave Mandl:

Ha, I have some Fripp and Eno with me tonight also.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- can't argue w/ any of those Jazz names...
Avatar 10:11pm Droll:

pss, Yes, that is exactly what it sounds like!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm pacific standard simon:

Compare and contrast, as they used to say in college.
  10:13pm LovecraftDude888:

I had some Comm. prof. years ago who kept going on about the "context context the context" I'm like if you say context one mo time....bang zoom!
Avatar 10:14pm Droll:

When I was in college that word had been substituted with "paradigm".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Coltrane # 1...then Monk...then many others
...remember being knocked on my butt by Bud Powell - like Bird w/a left hand on the keyboard...hell, I liked Cecil Taylor a lot...SunRa - everybody knows...
  10:16pm LovecraftDude888:

ha! oh wait, and then there was my prof. who kept talking about society becoming "Robo tized"! And that was pre-Internet. hoo boy. he had pakistani accent so "I am feeling somewhat..rob o tized"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm pacific standard simon:

The question is, will Doug Wiselman have a paid digital download available for the non-turntable-owning fans?
Avatar 10:17pm Droll:

pss, No, they can use YouTube like everyone else.
  10:17pm LovecraftDude888:

I guess I better go back and buy that Monk box!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm pacific standard simon:

The Columbia years were good years. Some prefer the Riverside years. Others like the Blue Note years. I say, get 'em all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- I'm w/ pss on the Monk.
  10:21pm blee:

This older Bolan sounds like Banhart, or vice versa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...Donovan behind Bolan. w/ his blessing.
  10:22pm LovecraftDude888:

I'm sure, once you get into an artist like that you gotta buy it all. That's the problem. But a lot of things online now and Spotify so at least some of that stuff is available free or nominally. I'm a massive Bolan T.Rex fan....got all the deluxe editions...the Tanx one is especially great! Edsel. ahhhhh 20th Century boiii liked REM's "bad"version "peter says it's fine, peter says it good" etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm pacific standard simon:

My personal preference is for anything with Frankie Dunlop on the skins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Geez Dave. Kenzo's gonna tell me I'm abusing the ☆ing privilege...
Avatar 10:26pm Dave Mandl:

DLBRRN63: Don't listen to him. The more the better.
  10:26pm HollyT:

Hi D, tuning in a bit late tonight
Avatar 10:27pm Dave Mandl:

Hey Holly.
Avatar 10:28pm Dave Mandl:

...Just in time for Klimperei.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Holly: Kottke tunes whenever however he pleases...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...in D or whatever...
  10:29pm HollyT:

WOW. Perfect timing!
  10:31pm HollyT:

I remember listening to the CD of "Tout Seul Sur la Plage..," you burned for me, Dave, on the bus back to Providence, c. 2005. It was magical!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...nice Trane cover...remember some book of Jazz photos w/ pretty sure Shepp in his place w/ big poster of Hendrix hanging...
Avatar 10:33pm Dave Mandl:

Holly: Yeah, this Frank Pahl and Klimperei is very nice too. You need to get a copy of that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...nice band...
Swag For Life Member 10:37pm 12539:

Now that we're in the final half of the final stretch, I think it's safe to say this is turning out to be a pretty good show.
Avatar 10:39pm Droll:

I reserve my judgement for the Final Stretch of the Final Stretch (ie: a C60).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...that was your cue to tell me band personnel : ) ...a few of 'em anyway : ) ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- nice ! - which was drummer, por favor Sir?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm pacific standard simon:

Also worked with early Club Foot Orchestra.
  10:45pm LovecraftDude888:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Bolan's voice: 'tremolo' - ?? falsetto tremolo ??
Avatar 10:48pm Dave Mandl:

Tremolo: Damn, that's the word I was looking for. It's terrifying being on the radio. You forget everything you know.
Avatar 10:48pm Dave Mandl:

Or vibrato.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...trill going rapidly from one note to another - tremolo going 'on & off' - vibrato going rapidly up & down in pitch...LDude888 might be right??
- Anyhow - good point - lotsa singers - but Bolan like some World Music kinda thing or something !...
  10:51pm P-90:

Hi Dave! first rate show tonight! Tremelo is change in volume, vibrato is change in pitch.
  10:52pm LovecraftDude888:

as per The Cars...shaking like tremolo etc. Ric Ocasek will explain all
Avatar 10:52pm Droll:

Ditto P-90.
  10:54pm LovecraftDude888:

any other Cronenberg fans about? I love how the guy keeps calling James Woods "patrone" in Videodrome....nevermind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Andrew Waterloo:

You can find Obscure records releases on Ubuweb
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...'whammy bar' on guitar for example actually a vibrato...
Avatar 10:56pm Dave Mandl:

Hi P-90. Thanks for the official explanation. But it's called a tremolo bar on a guitar. A misnomer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Andrew Waterloo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- yeah - misnomer!
- Videodrome is Classic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm pacific standard simon:

O, how I used to play this record loud and do drugs!
  10:58pm LovecraftDude888:

thanks David.... thanks patronE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- I'm sure P-90 is right. The *electronic* effect of tremolo turns the signal rapidly on & off ('Crimosn & Clover' coda vocal par example)...
Avatar 11:00pm JakeGould:

“Wind on Water” has snapped me out of a blah day. Thank you!
Avatar 11:00pm Dave Mandl:

Thanks, Love. Night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm pacific standard simon:

I'm going to listen to No. 4 after this show.
Avatar 11:00pm Droll:

I come back from the kitchen to see I've missed Snakefinger, Fripp, and Eno... This week's listening experience has been a shambles. Thank you, archives.
  11:00pm P-90:

Yeah, the "whammy Bar" is a pitch-changing vibrato device that alters the length of the strings, but is widely referred to as a "tremelo bar." And Yup, Videodrome is a one-of-a--kind classic.
  11:01pm bb:

Wind on Water is one of my favorite songs of all time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm pacific standard simon:

The first album had bonus coolness points, because it was only on import in the US for a long time. Evening Star got a domestic release right away.
  11:04pm LovecraftDude888:

I bought the reissue of No Pussyfooting 2 yrs. back, found it pretty challenging, difficult listening. Haven't played it since. And I'm a big Eno fan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...of course - Hendrix might've employed them all @ once : )...
Avatar 11:06pm northguineahills:

I love the backwards and halfspeed tracks on the reissue of No Pussyfooting. Still a fave of mine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm pacific standard simon:

Hey, it's more listenable than Metal Machine Music! ;)
  11:08pm LovecraftDude888:

that's true. Metal machine is hardcore. Xenakis's La legende de'er is even more fecked up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm pacific standard simon:

So, Droll, what've you got in the kitchen? Electric, or gas?
Avatar 11:10pm Droll:

Pull my finger and find out.
Avatar 11:11pm northguineahills:

La legende de'e is also a fun one of mine. Great for road trips.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm pacific standard simon:

It's a Seattle thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...knowing him - a joy buzzer *&* a fart - like tremolo & vibrato @ once...
  11:12pm LovecraftDude888:

I bought some Morton Subotnick CD at WFMU Fair a few years ago and that was pretty hardcore messed up, in 5.1 no less!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm pacific standard simon:

For whatever reason, my public library had tons of this stuff, often on the Nonesuch label, when I was an impressionable teenager. Stockhausen, too.
Swag For Life Member 11:17pm 12539:

Yay for Winant/Harrison!
  11:18pm LovecraftDude888:

Good for you... my library growing up on LI which I later worked at, had horrible music collections....lucky if you could find a Haircut 100 LP!
  11:19pm P-90:

Subotnick rocks!
Avatar 11:22pm Droll:

I was utterly dependent on the library growing up. My local branch had all the Zebra albums and at least 5 Golden Earring albums, all of which would be out of reach for another decade. I wouldn't have checked for Haircut 100. If they did it was probably wait-listed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...I have a vague idea of what Stockhausen sounds like. Where would I have heard that? Some such 'Modernist' Comp. from the Library as you describe? Public Radio before the the Republican Revolution when there was still money for something challenging?...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm pacific standard simon:

If you have heard some of the noises between songs on Frank Zappa's Uncle Meat, then you might get an idea of what Stockhausen sounds like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- right pss !
...This Kotik reminds me slightly of stuff where they turn astronomical data into sound & turn the telescope around to 'look' @ different parts of the sky...
  11:29pm LovecraftDude888:

I went to a memorial Earle Brown concert a few years back at PS1 in Queens...that was interesting (and free!) but I wasn't as taken with him as Morton Feldman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm pacific standard simon:

@Rabbit - I would send away for any cheap promotional thing, as a kid. Once I got a 45 that was supposed to represent the actual scientific translation of solar wind on the Earth's magnetic field.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm pacific standard simon:

It sounded like -- what else -- electronic music.
Avatar 11:34pm Droll:

pss, I'd listen to that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- yeah - interesting
- I'm thinking of Fiorella Terenzi - but I shouldn't overstate it...
Avatar 11:36pm Droll:

pss, But I'll also listen to numbers stations, just as a point of reference.

I miss when ephemeral music mean it really was intended to perish.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm pacific standard simon:

Yup, uh-huh. When Metal Machine Music first came out, I thought the real hoax was that Lou had released an album of shortwave jamming, which I enjoyed, as "guitar feedback".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm pacific standard simon:

Jack-o-lanterns in November? Inconceivable!
Avatar 11:42pm Droll:

I really want to hear the Blowfly live set -- will he be simulcast on one of the off-air streams, or maybe FMA?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm pacific standard simon:

@12539 - different actualization.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm pacific standard simon:

This is funny.
  11:45pm P-90:

The track w/ the nifty ST samples.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I guess the Leonids meteor shower is happening, but the skies here are totally cloudy. The moon is full, anyway, so it'd probably blot out a lot of the show.

I don't think xmas will come to my pad until March, at the rate we're going.... (we also have dia del muerte decorations to put up later this week).

Still waiting to see Comet ISON, which is rising before dawn right now. Probably catch it, if possible, after it swings around the sun and shows after sunset, in December.

Great show, right from the Final Stretch all the way through to the Final Stretch. Spock calculated the Mellotron Quotient for next week's episode, but Scottie says the ship cannot handle it. Until then, he's dead, Jim.

We get good dark here but there's a lot of fog and trees in the way.
