The Bad Trips made me forget what I was doing. Good stuff.
Avatar 3:16pm doca:

hello scott, the beginning of your show says I can stop working right now (it's 6 pm where I live)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm DCE:

@ doca...Greenland?
  3:20pm Lulu:

I am very happy listening to this, thank you for playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Stanley:

@DCE - Greenland, that would be something. He's in Brazil methinks.

I see that Dave Davies from The Kinks is in NY (City Winery) tomorrow and NJ on Thursday. www.davedavies.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm DCE:

yeah, I was trying to think what's a bit east of EST. I really didn't think Brazil jutted that far out east. Must study more maps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: Yep, keep in mind that all of South America is further to the east than it seems on maps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Faye:

first time I heard this GZM was on this very show! many moons ago
Avatar 3:34pm Sem Chumbo:

Damn the Mercator projection, Matt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Matt from Springfield:

Wooo! Great string of hits! Too bad the Clicky Stars aren't taking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Matt from Springfield:

@Sem: It's good for navigation, and not much else!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Scott Williams:

Hi pals!!! Aww, nice of you to remember Faye. that was the 1st GZM track I ever heard. Matt - really, clicky stars ain't werkin??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Scott Williams:

fwiw, it just werked for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm tim from champaign:

How is time kept my astronauts? (This is not a joke or smart aleck question)
Avatar 3:37pm doca:

@DCE and Matt and all: I'm in Brazil, as I often say. The fact is that the East Coast just quited its Daylight Saving Time and we started ours, so time just skips ahead
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Matt from Springfield:

@Scott: Bad Trips is starred, everything else that I try goes away after a couple secs. This happens sometimes on playlists, though I'm not sure of the particulars.
Avatar 3:38pm doca:

@tim: I wonder how they'll make when other planets are colonized? How will they establish an standard time? Perhaps a stellar date, just like in Star Trek, will be created
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm DCE:

stars disappearing into stellar time zone black hole...aw...:(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm tim from champaign:

Is there a standard time at the international space station?
Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Glenn M:

you scared me, I thought my cool new speakers were broken
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Matt from Springfield:

@tim: How is time kept BY astronauts you mean? I would think probably ITC time on Earth (unaffected by local DSTs, it's 20:41 Z time right now).

Other planets and satellites would have their own days/nights/years, so I would think a "stellar date" (as perceived at the Federation's mission control or something) would be the intergalactic standard on all ships and planets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Matt from Springfield:

UTC! UNIVERSAL Coordinated Time, apologies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I found a nifty Firefox plugin, Foxclocks, that you can set up for a variety of places and their local times. It adjusts for DST, so you can keep up with what time it is for their locales. addons.mozilla.org...
  3:45pm doca:

the questio is: how i will keep track of wfmu schedule when i'm on mars?
  3:46pm doca:

oh what a terrible terrible news, i don't even know what to say
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Matt from Springfield:

RIP guys...Yellow Dogs rule forever...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm tim from champaign:

MfS - yep, that's pretty much what I was wondering.
  3:48pm KP:

Nice, Scott.
Avatar 3:49pm Marshall Stacks:

The time zone aside, when you're on Mars, the WFMU signal has a variable 13-20 minute lag depending on the distance to Jersey City.
Avatar 3:49pm dale:

one more fine example of the second amendment, although i'm sure it was an illegal gun
Avatar 3:50pm Marshall Stacks:

Sad news about the Yellow Dogs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Scott Williams:

Matt, I see what you mean. My star went away, but the song stayed favorited. I'll take it to the Kenzo Powers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Matt from Springfield:

@doca/Marshall: There would be a standard delay in transmissions from Earth to Mars to calculate, plus that time doesn't run at the same "pace" everywhere (as per the Theory of Relativity), and with different days and years on Mars, the WFMU schedule could be calculated, but it would be all over the friggin map, not on the same time or day each Earth week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Matt from Springfield:

@Scott: The Kenzo Powers always intervene! Thanks.

@Marshall: I like your name :)
Avatar 3:54pm Marshall Stacks:

Thanks, @Matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm steve:

all praise to Kenzo
Avatar 4:01pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Matt: Next time your clicky star seems to disappear - let it be. A minute or so later, does it come back?

There is an illusion of star disappearance that happens. Stardom is (or isn't) ephemeral.
Avatar 4:02pm doca:

@Marshall/Mfs: I thought the delay between Earth and Mars would be longer, but even counting the delay, by what reference would a Universal Time between Earth and Mars be established?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm tim from champaign:

That's really terrible about Yellow Dogs. I can only imagine that the band members potentially risked jail time or death by playing western style music in Tehran. Then to keep their drive and passion alive by emigrating to the U.S. to keep playing only to be murdered over something they loved. That's really tragic.
Avatar 4:02pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

P.S. What timezones are your dreams in?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Matt from Springfield:

Nice avatar Kenzo!
I refreshed my page, and the stars are staying! But when my stars go away, it doesn't log the song as Favorited; Scott's stars were going away but they were still Faved for him. Well, so long as my stars are permanent now and not ephemeral. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm steve:

nice! i didnt realize we could use animated gifs as avatars!
Avatar 4:07pm fred:

I think we all should proactively switch to Kenzo time. It's already ready for time-shifting, so a step ahead of relativity. For instance, now would be Scott+65, we'd have to come up with the right way of saying that
Avatar 4:07pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Next time it happens, AND it doesn't come back a minute later, email me and tell me which song on which playlist it was. kenzodb.com...
Avatar 4:07pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

P.S. I don't know what animated avatar you could possibly be talking about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Matt from Springfield:

@Kenzo: Dreamspell Universal Time, UTC+27:00 x 8πΔ.
Avatar 4:09pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

According to long-time WFMU pal Anil, the book "Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand" addresses in part the complications of tenses when you live in a time travel world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Matt from Springfield:

@fred: Ah, you mean the start of Scott's show + 65 minutes? (69 now) :)

If someone (say, Bill Zurat) was filling in for this block, you could say "Bill Zurat vice Scott+65".
Avatar 4:11pm fred:

@Matt: it happens, I think there's a lag related to the DJ maybe entering additional information. I guess it should be permanent once the next track is displayed. The track shows up in your favorites though, sometimes with an empty star
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm steve:

its almost half past Scott
Avatar 4:13pm fred:

@Matt: of course, schedule changes could make it hard to keep track of time over longer periods. Then there are fill-ins and archives and alternate streams. But Kenzo's show has been a great trying ground for time-warping experiments
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Matt from Springfield:

@doca: Well because of the Theory of Relativity, 180 minutes on Earth might run at a different "pace" on Mars, but as long as the difference is a consistent, mathematical factor of Earth's time, a "universal time" between two planets could be calculated. Basically a "converter" that outputs Earth time and the equiv Mars time as the same value.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Matt from Springfield:

@fred: That's for sure! Kenzo has freed us from the burden of being on time, and shifts things around for us! :)
Avatar 4:16pm fred:

@steve: I thought of that, but how can it be "past" Scott when Scott is still on the air?
Avatar 4:16pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

OK, the tech talk segment of Scott's playlist.

It's all about this gap period after a DJ changes the artist, track or album of a song you already favorited. You don't lose the favorite (it follows the DJ's edit), BUT your view of the playlist which hasn't yet reloaded is still displaying the old artist/track/album, and thinks it isn't a favorited song, or an existing song at all. As soon as your playlist view refreshes (might be a minute later), and the new artist/track/album is displayed, your star reappears, as your favorite was not really lost.

The problem is going to go away when the whole notion of the reloading page goes away, semi-soonish.

ON THE OTHER HAND, if you're really actually losing your favorite, I need to know (although I can imagine it has to do with a DJ deleting and recreating a song, which I can confirm if you give me an instance of it happening).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Matt from Springfield:

The whole notion of reloading page going away? Hmm, I'm liking your radical views on Internet pages! Thanks for the intricacies of why we're seeing what we're seeing!
Avatar 4:19pm doca:

@MfS; thanks for the explanation, I liked it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm steve:

hmm good point fred
Avatar 4:20pm fred:

@Matt: I think Kenzo time will have each of us drift to our own timelines, which would probably fit most of us. Won't make meet-ups any easier though. Herd of cats, I'm telling you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm common:

pretty sure that gena rowland's daughter directed kiss of the damned.
Avatar 4:20pm doca:

and I heard that the new playlist will be a 3D playlist, complete with a moving gif of the DJ dancing in the studio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm Matt from Springfield:

Thanks doca! Your "the beginning of your show says I can stop working right now (it's 6 pm where I live)" started all this! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Matt from Springfield:

And thanks doca again! I'm no physicist, so glad I could explain that semi-plausibly :)
Avatar 4:21pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

fred: You are (or will be) quite correct in your guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm steve:

Avatar 4:23pm doca:

@MfS: your explanation made me think of start studying some amateur astronomy again
Avatar 4:23pm Droll:

If everyone timeshifts, who will be here to talk with during our favorite shows?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm ! I X Key !:

Avatar 4:24pm doca:

but anyway, I'm heading off the comment board, Patricia Highsmith's The Talented Mr. Ripley got me hooked and I need a leisure reading right now.
  4:24pm ted:

Avatar 4:24pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Droll: Obviously, people from different times! Just like the meetup. It'll work; it just won't have the people you expected.
Avatar 4:24pm fred:

@Droll: the good thing is that you can talk with people who were there before, or will be there later, in addition to those who happen to be here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Matt from Springfield:

I imagine we could still comment from anywhere in the universe; distant comments just might have a much longer delay to display for everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Ike:

Hi Kenzo. Speaking of animated avatars, some people donated at an animated avatar level in the last marathon. Is that still in the works?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Matt from Springfield:

Sweet, have a good evening doca!

@fred: That's true, particularly for us "Archivists"--the playlists are a living record, add to them at anytime!
Avatar 4:26pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Ike: It's literally just waiting for a nod from one person, and then the switch will be flipped, which should probably happen tomorrow. Thanks for your animated patience.
Avatar 4:26pm fred:

@Ike: Kenzo's earlier animated avatar looked like a "yes". When is a muddy question, as we've been discussing
Avatar 4:29pm fred:

I suspect Ken might want to unleash the GIF avatars during his "radio" show (his quotes)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Matt from Springfield:

Sounds like 21st Century phone tag to me.
Avatar 4:36pm fred:

@Droll: try Kenzo's show, but don't procrastinate, it won't be here forever (well it will, but not in the same way)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Matt from Springfield:

It works best when EVERYONE comes later, like when the streams were down but radio was still up. The playlist and Archive appeared later that day, and the usual fans commented while listening, sometimes with each other when both were on at the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Scott Williams:

Common, you may be right: Xan Cassavettes. Ted, thanks! Yes, twas Grady.
Avatar 4:41pm Droll:

fred, Now I'm confused, I thought the entire point of timeshifting was to show up late. Don't procrastinate, timeshift now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Stanley:

Great Daniel Aliangana track. For more check out blog.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Ken From Hyde Park:

A question for Kenzo, if I may. On the smartphone app, will there be a way to log in with our friendship IDs? I don't think that is currently possible, right?
Avatar 4:44pm fred:

It's called Ken's *last ever* radio extravaganza, after all. Maybe there's a reason for that. Maybe not. Why take a chance? Also, I think confusion is part of the point, and showing up early is allowed too
