Listener comments!

Avatar 3:19pm Cheri Pi:

very nice.
Avatar 3:20pm Cecile:

Kickass version of this song, and a great take of Ocean.
Avatar 3:21pm slugluv1313:

HAPPY HALLOWE'EN to you, Fabio and listeners!!!
Avatar 3:22pm slugluv1313:

Avatar 3:22pm Cecile:

Fabio, do you have a good Lou story for us?
Avatar 3:23pm Cecile:

I don't know to feel good or bad that Lou Reed's album sales went up 700% after his passing.
Avatar 3:24pm kirk from beer city usa:

man, I was impatiently waiting for this page to appear so I could say THANKS for playing "Ocean." Love it!
  3:26pm as:

rip lou reed.
  3:26pm as:

how about that 40 min sister ray from the quine tapes
  3:28pm sdfjones:

Can Metal Machine Music be far away?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm tim from champaign:

I thought I had all the Lou records I needed but then I heard The Bells. That will be the last Lou record in my collection. Honest.
Avatar 3:29pm Cecile:

they are so ON, they are in synch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm common:

man. i hear you fabio. nice homage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Ike:

I don't think I EVER heard VU until I came to NJ and started listening to FMU in the early 90s. But of course, I already knew many of VU's descendents.
Avatar 3:32pm Cecile:

yeah. I made fun of him at times, but some of my very favorite stuff is from the Velvets/Lou Reed.
Avatar 3:32pm Cheri Pi:

best picks ever!
Avatar 3:33pm Cecile:

WCBN in A2 turned me on to them.
Those records were SO beat up in the studio by the time I got there to DJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Rich in Washington:

this is great, Fabio. Thanks.
For some reason, listening to solo Lou didn't do it to me this week quite like listening to the Velvets, especially What Goes On. I just fucking lost it listening on my way to work Monday.
Avatar 3:34pm kirk from beer city usa:

Cecile, are you from MI?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm tim from champaign:

Oh man, The Gift is my favorite Lou solo song.
Avatar 3:35pm slugluv1313:

excellent Fabio story, for which i am grateful to this day: one day i came home from a REALLY crappy day at work -- Fabio's show just came on the air (maybe you were doing an evening show then??) and he opens with ONE WHOLE SIDE of "Metal Machine Music" -- it was SO perfect, so SOOTHING!!! just what the proverbial "doctor" ordered (i think i even called you to THANK YOU, Fabio, it was THAT healing!!!)
Avatar 3:38pm Cecile:

I am, kirk. Born and raised in Houghton, went to school in A2 and Marquette.
Avatar 3:40pm Fabio:

@ slugluv: I'll be playing some of that again in a bit.
Avatar 3:41pm kirk from beer city usa:

I just realized that I shouldn't think of folks on this comment page as being in the vicinity of WFMU, duh. Cecile is a yooper! I was born and raised in GR. (once dated a girl from Gladstone, BTW)
Avatar 3:43pm Cecile:

Gladstone! hahahah
I had great college friends from GR.
Avatar 3:45pm kirk from beer city usa:

she used to say she was from Escanaba, just because she figured more people would know of it. this was WAY before the jeff daniels film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm tim from champaign:

Man. you're hitting all the songs that strike a chord with me, Fabio. This is my second favorite solo Lou song after A Gift.
  3:49pm Ted:

Love this ...wonder who played guitar on Coney Island Baby? Anybody know? ol buddy Ronson?
Avatar 3:49pm hitoshi-jp:

Thank you for a great show. RIP Lou. from Japan.
Avatar 3:49pm slugluv1313:

i echo tim from champaign, ALL the stuff you are playing today is just perfect, thank you so much!!!
Avatar 3:51pm Cecile:

Yeah, kirk, it's like people saying they are from Marquette, when they are from Ishpeming or Negaunee...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm common:

yea. i echo slugluv and tim and hitoshi. great!
  3:53pm Eric:

yay all my favorite VU tracks!
Avatar 3:53pm Cheri Pi:

Yoopers delight! (A2 = Eh 2?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm crateslinger:

About ten guys are listening to this in the warehouse right now, forkiifts and dollys rolling. Trucks in and aout. WFMU is hit or miss with these mooks. Right now it's all good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Mutant:

WFMU is playing two VU songs at once right now. Quite a feat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm tim from champaign:

kirk and Cecile, since you're all calling people out for fronting on where they're from I've got to confess that I grew up in Kentwood, not Grand Rapids. Hope you don't think anything less of me.
  3:56pm Melinda:

yeah, it's moving to hear these songs, great selection Fabio. Lou was Lou, you kind of knew what to expect even if you didn't realize it. A very cool dude and great artist. I love that he ended up with a very intelligent and talented artist and woman.
Avatar 3:56pm Cecile:

hahahaha tim, I have no idea where the hell that is.
Avatar 3:56pm kirk from beer city usa:

um, yeah, tim. I guess I used to say that I was from Grand Rapids when I was really from Comstock Park.
Avatar 3:57pm kirk from beer city usa:

lou reed would never have set foot in kentwood
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm tim from champaign:

hahahahaha-kirk! No he wouldn't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Mutant:

Hang in there Fabio, you are doing god's work
Avatar 4:01pm northguineahills:

Damn, I was stuck in a meeting the last hour....
Avatar 4:02pm InBrkly:

Must find this version.
Avatar 4:02pm northguineahills:

I always wanted to hear the Zeitkratzer version of MMM.
Avatar 4:03pm slugluv1313:

re: Lou's music in 50, 100 years and beyond -- i recall reading an interview in which he said how he ultimately wanted to create songs/music/etc. that were universal and would stand the test of time, and not just "stuck" in one era
Avatar 4:04pm slugluv1313:

PERFECT! do not think i have heard this Zeitkratzer version before!
Avatar 4:05pm Cecile:

this is truly inspired.
  4:06pm Onaseereeussnote:

I think that he has moved so many people because he was publicly human and real, and we all knew he had had his struggles, then there is the sensitivity and emotion in his art...
Avatar 4:06pm kirk from beer city usa:

this is really great, and it makes me appreciate what Lou did by himself with some feedback decades ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Mike East:

this sounds amazing. nice work whoever did the orchestration. thanks, Fabio
Avatar 4:09pm Cheri Pi:

Cecile, see if we have any extra copies of Kraut-Yoopernaught heavies Aphrodite's Polyp, Kirk could probably use a little pick-me-up.
Avatar 4:10pm Cecile:

I have only fictional ones. The Rev hasn't recorded it yet. :D
Avatar 4:11pm Cheri Pi:

Oh that's right, he said he'd get to it after deer-hunting season.
Avatar 4:12pm northguineahills:

Stupid workstation volume won't go louder.... grrrrr....
Avatar 4:13pm Cecile:

Rev doesn't hunt so much as he wrestles them to the ground and demands tribute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm crateslinger:

okay now I got ten guys want to kill me with a forklift.
Avatar 4:13pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Hey whut?
Can't find any deer this year, it's all jackalopes so far.
Jackalopes and feral prog record producers.
Avatar 4:14pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Plus every time the 'Polyp gets together in studio, they end up gathered around a soup-pot of rhubarb for hours and NOTHING gets recorded...
Avatar 4:16pm kirk from beer city usa:

Cecile/Cheri/RTD, ever read a record review that said RIYL da yoopers and the 1st Amon Duul LP? (or a band ad)
Avatar 4:16pm Cecile:

soup pot?
More like a wine vat
Avatar 4:17pm Cecile:

no. I think they are stil trying to wrap their heads around Dark Side of the Moon up there (and largely failing)
Avatar 4:20pm Cheri Pi:

Yoo betcha Kirk, the legendary-wicked influencial on the UP kraut rock scene Sherman Hemsley wrote that review for Da Wired. Wine vat? More like a Ram-Van isolation chamber! Sadly cecile speaks truth. there should be a small prison built on reclaime KOA land up there just to punish the Floyd-jackers
Avatar 4:22pm kirk from beer city usa:

aw shit, gotta go. thanks fabio and everyone for the good times!
  4:23pm byekirk:

Mike Tyson was said to have said, something like: "Yeah, everybody's got a plan, until he gets hit in the face." I love that.
Avatar 4:28pm Cheri Pi:

According to Proggers almanac you want to hunt defamed producers on either November: 21st, 22nd, or December: 19th, 20th. Don't even waste your BBs.
Avatar 4:29pm Cheri Pi:

Well, scared another one away...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Andrew Waterloo:

Well.. I did book Dec 19th off, but that was because of my french final...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Andrew Waterloo:

This is nice, I was just reading about Meredith Monk and planning on listening to her stuff.
Avatar 4:33pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I carry a vial of simulated Keith Emerson urine in my hunting gear, it comes in handy during the peak of season when the Prog Producers are rutting and wandering the universities, uttering that haunting mating-cry that sounds a bit like a damaged Hammond B-3...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Andrew Waterloo:

In my area the popular hunting season is in late spring and late fall. It's for modern rock fans and it requires condensed Coors light and a sub machine gun.
Avatar 4:38pm Cheri Pi:

Word to the wise there, you can't have too many padlocks on your sound labs this time of year, in a pinch you can always flush them out of the shrubbery using an old-fashioned mellotron-call just like grandpa used to do.
Avatar 4:40pm Cecile:

Ghost pepper spray around the perimeter doesn't hurt, either.
Avatar 4:41pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Use a regular cotton pillow-case: flap it GENTLY to simulate the sound of Rick Wakeman's majestic flowing sleeves. Works in a pinch to lure them out into open space if synthetic Keith Pee isn't available.
  4:43pm ScottC:

With the passing of Lou Reed - I think it will be one of those deals where as the years go by there will seem to be a bigger and bigger hole in the fabric. He was not the productive lately but it still leaves a big What If? I'll bet somebody is pitching a Biopic right this very second. Such an interesting life...
Avatar 4:44pm Cheri Pi:

They have no chance at all when using the above mentioned Wakeman's Sleeve ploy, I almost feel sorry for the vermin.
  4:47pm Dean:

I miss Starcastle, Angel, Triumvirat...
Avatar 4:47pm Cecile:

If you really want overkill, the Focus Hocus Pocus Prog Call really does the trick.
  4:48pm Dean:

Kansas, Public Foot the Roman...
Avatar 4:48pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Dean: Many of those are in the Game Freezer, awaiting processing. Stay tuned, updates (and price-list) to follow.
  4:49pm Dean:

Absolute Elsewhere...
Avatar 4:50pm Cecile:

Yes, it's fun to sit out in the Prog Blind (guardian) in the fall.
  4:54pm Melinda:

To ScottC:--biopic, yes. Hopefully it would be done tastefully. You know who might be good in that? That actor who reads The Raven on one of Lou's albums... great actor, in a lot of movies and part of an awesome theatre company. Laurie will surely stop any exploitive crap if she can.
Avatar 4:56pm Cheri Pi:

THE FALL! Hunting tips with MES!
Avatar 4:58pm Cheri Pi:

I'm looking forward to putting on my Prog-Stalker cap tonight and creeping around the music college with my armory in tow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm common:

@Dean: Love me some Starcastle! Good call!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Carmichael:

Gotta run to a meeting, but wanted to mention that my iPod spit out Rock'n'Roll Animal the other night. Amazing coincidence, or maybe it could feel the vibes.
Avatar 4:59pm InBrkly:

I liked Abel Ferrara's "The Hunger". Been years though--don't know if it holds up. No to be confused with the movie of the same title that had David Bowie and Bauhaus in it.
  4:59pm Melinda:

@ScottC--Willem Dafoe!
Avatar 5:00pm Cheri Pi:

Off now to the land of beersies!
Avatar 5:00pm InBrkly:

oh wait I'm the one confused. It is called The Addiction.
Avatar 5:01pm david_:

You had me at "it went unnoticed by the Franco-ist censors."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Eyepatch Fox:

BAM is having a Polish theatric version of Nosferatu, with the score by Zorn. I might go do that tomorrow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Mutant:

I'm listening to this while watching this video: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Mutant:

Works well together
Avatar 5:06pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Cheers, Pi. Happy hunting.
Avatar 5:08pm Cecile:

later, Cheri!
  5:14pm nic:

this is happy
  5:18pm Melinda:

One could very easily do a campy, trashy porno version of Lou's story.
  5:19pm TDK60:

Thanks for your Lou/VU sets!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm tim from champaign:

"Dizzy From The Cold Meds" and "Lung Cleaner" is really speaking to me.
Avatar 5:23pm dale:

i'm not a lou reed fan but the stuff fabs played was fantastic. and i never thought he'd get emotional
Avatar 5:23pm Cecile:

this is a JAM
Avatar 5:24pm Cecile:

dale, I often admired Lou more than I liked him, but you are 100% right about the Fabio picks.
Avatar 5:24pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Cecile speaks truth.
Avatar 5:24pm dale:

best version of dracula or frankenstein are both warhol's
Avatar 5:25pm dale:

udo kier is a fantastic vampire
Avatar 5:26pm dale:

...but you can never find a virgin when you need one
Avatar 5:34pm david_:

Fabio's sure to tell us exactly what Clay Pigeon has in store for us...
Avatar 5:34pm Lucy:

wirgin bloooooooood!
Avatar 5:34pm dale:

  5:39pm DerekX:

"I tasted my blood today, for the first time in many years. Mmm."
Avatar 5:41pm dale:

frankenstein was shot in 3D so all the impalements are set up to be towards the viewer
  5:44pm DerekX:

"What am I to do Lord? I crave deeply. Sew my mouth shut? Kill myself?"
Avatar 5:46pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Severely digging this.
  5:47pm DerekX:

"I know, i will hit myself in the head with a mallet near the top of the stairs and hope I fall down. Or maybe I will suck out all of my own blood and thus die, fall down, pasty, dimpled, dead... Eventially my kill me for my flesh and I will watch, from HELL."
  5:48pm DerekX:

"puppies" I meant to insert "puppies" after "Eventually" ......
Avatar 5:49pm david_:

Oct. 31 seems like a good time to tune into WFMU for the first time. By the time you realize it's Halloween year-round, you're hooked!
Avatar 5:52pm northguineahills:

Ackkk, more meetings, missed more...!
  5:53pm ?:

Yes! ATP! Lou is now at them, with Sterling and Nico.
Avatar 5:53pm dale:

first time i heard nico i thought it was a joke. jokes on me i guess
  5:54pm TDK60:

said TDK60 @ ATP
Avatar 5:55pm david_:

this song's a fitting Lou tribute. hey, no ostrich guitar!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Tome:

... the fact that it wasn't even 1967 when this came out makes it sooo Astonishing ...
Avatar 5:57pm Cecile:

tome, I know.
  5:57pm Ted:

my left speaker cut out and all I hear is nico and guitar. it's haunting this way RIP Lou
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Rich in Washington:

Great show! Thanks so much!
