Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Their name translates in Tamasheq to "caravan", and the band has been forced to spread their sounds through live touring and non-domestic channels since political uprisings in Mali in 2012 have forced the music out. They'll be live in the studio today! Also, as a bonus, we'll be broadcasting a set recorded by Rob Weisberg from the New York/Lincoln Center stop of the Festival of the Desert tour this past summer with Imharhan, another electric combo led by Mohamed Issa ag Oumar, a member of Tartit. Tartit and Imharhan stopped by Transpacific Sound Paradise in July as well for a WFMU session. YEA! metal machine music!!!
Avatar 3:04pm Cheri Pi:

Heya BT, and the BT nation of Mayem
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Greg from Bloomfield:

Thanks, BT– I've never actually listened to this record, so now seems like a good time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm DCE:

ho ho here we go
Avatar 3:05pm Lopez:

Now we're talking!
Avatar 3:06pm northguineahills:

Here we go!!!!
Avatar 3:07pm northguineahills:

Earbuds won't get lounder :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Mike Sin:

Will have to check, but I'd wager "Metal Machine Music" sold more copies in its first year than any Velvet Underground LP did in its first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm tim from champaign:

Excellent start, BT! My favorite solo Lou records are Transformer, Berlin, Coney Island Baby, Street Hassle and MMM. MMM is super good. I paid $25 for a vinyl copy of MMM in the late 90s. That was more than I'd ever paid for a record at that time and I'd never seen a copy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Matt F:

Makes I Heard Her Call My Name sound like Sugar Sugar.
Avatar 3:10pm kirk from beer city usa:

this is my favorite Lou Reed record.
tim, you were born too late to get this from the cut-out bin...
Avatar 3:13pm Brian Turner:

Got mine for $4.99!
Avatar 3:14pm Joe McG:

Still available on CD on Amazon for $4.11 (plus s/h)!
Avatar 3:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I've honestly never heard it before either. Kewl. Perhaps partly a put-on & an 'up yours' to a Label - but also awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Matt from Springfield:

MMM, a fitting tribute!
It was supposed to be a contractual obligation "up yours", but when I first heard it, sounded too melodic to be just a throwaway.
  3:21pm jrlp:

Startling, Side C...are these people cops?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Matt from Springfield:

Funny thing about "I Heard Her Call My Name" is--it actually DOES sound a bit like the 1910 Fruitgum Company with feedback piled on!
Avatar 3:22pm kirk from beer city usa:

that was a brilliant interview!
Avatar 3:23pm Brian Turner:

Hi everyone, tis my last week of the Silent October fundraiser to help build our ground floor performance space for the public, and I'm at a paltry 32% raised. Thanks to everyone for checking in who has; if you can spare some ducats for today's cause, I'd be surely appreciative.
  3:23pm jljl:

This is weird, why am I hearing Joe at 3:22 Boston time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Ken From Hyde Park:

A collection of Lou Reed tributes. I'm sure there are tons of others out there - www.telegraph.co.uk...
Avatar 3:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...love this - worthy addition to the tradition of Dylan & Warhol Press Interviews it was...An Important Voice is gone.
Avatar 3:24pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Matt from Springfield:

  3:26pm Ajax:

You are off to a great start, thank you!
  3:26pm mary:

so great so far. PLEASE devote the entire show to Lou's music. Please please.
Avatar 3:27pm Cecile:

Brian, do you have that record of the VU show where the Velvets are playing in a bar and asking what the football scores are?
Avatar 3:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...always notable when such people made it to NewHampshuh - probably not too far in time from The Shaggs recording (!?) - think of that...
Avatar 3:28pm Brian Turner:

I do not! Which show? Yeah, sorry not all Lou today, we have live guests, Terakaft and Imharhan coming up which is gonna rule.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Matt from Springfield:

The only rule - is that it's gonna rule!!
Avatar 3:31pm Cecile:

that Live '69 double album with the hot-pants clad butt on it.
Avatar 3:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I got $20 in the bank 'til the 7th. I wanna do $15/month for FMU, but I may miss the fundraiser.
Avatar 3:35pm Cecile:

Rev, they can use it whenever they get it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm efd:

Sounds like Rosko voicing that VU ad!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Any Duane Allman tributes planned? He died in 1971 on this day in a motorcycle accident.
Avatar 3:36pm Chris from DC:

Aw yeah.
Avatar 3:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Can I Pledge now & start my 1st $15 after the 7th? I was thinking of spreading credit over favorite Programs w/ lowest %age, but it's late & 34% for BT is just wrong...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm listener james from westwood:

@ken: not sure if it was a tribute, but tony coulter played an allman bros cut today (dreams).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Tim from Hoboken:

Got your Sister Ray right here:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm mrdonutsu:

It's a Hostess DingDong, I'm sure!
  3:42pm Kaspar:

You doing a little self censoring here or is it the app?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Mike East:

was that Brian bleeping that? Is "ding dong" not ok with the fcc?
Avatar 3:43pm Cecile:

Rev, just pledge, and they will send you an envelope to send the money. You don't have to pony up the money right now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm efd:

I'd guess it's the combination of "sucking" + "ding dong" + daytime hours.
Avatar 3:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...it's Regional - they were RingDings up here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm efd:

Although I'd still bleep it even late at night, but that's because I'm a radio prude.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Mike Sin:

This 1967 "gymnasium" show is a rare soundboard recording of the VU -- most live tapes are from the audience. Evidently, the tape originated from John Cale. He stated that the Warhol folks had something to do with the recording and he ended up with the tape.
  3:48pm Grant:

This version of Sister Ray is deadly ... love the plays w/ feedback
  3:51pm Ajax:

It's pretty sad that it's 2013 and you still can't say "sucking on my ding dong" on the radio. Hostess Cakes is a viable company!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm mrdonutsu:

Just like Sister Ray said: www.youtube.com...
Swag For Life Member 3:53pm brendangen:

Big Twinkie doesn't need Ding Dong getting advertised. It's weird. PS. I hope a heart shows up to show I donated, it hasn't in the past month since I did.
  3:53pm Grant:

Ajax: And with Halloween just around the corner too ... what the hell will we do with "Ding-dong, the Witch is Dead" ...
Avatar 3:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I Clicked on Pledge widget here - but it's got my info from before including credit card, & I don't see an option to start getting charged later
...I mean - I'll do it sooner or later, so it's all good like that - but I'll help w/ 34% here today if I can figure an option...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Any bets that Ken's show tomorrow will have Lulu in its entirety?
Avatar 3:59pm Cecile:

Lou could have been a good journalist.
Showed up in his music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm DCE:

ha, Ken from Hyde Park, it's very likely
Avatar 4:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- or rather, I didn't see it offering any payment options aside from card...
Avatar 4:01pm Cecile:

My favorite version of this song.
Avatar 4:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...being charged immediately - which I can't do now...
Swag For Life Member 4:01pm brendangen:

I AM A TABLE! Also, I love this song.
Avatar 4:03pm Cecile:

Rev, email Joe McGasko, he will help you.
Avatar 4:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yerknow - Lou carried that image of decadence - w/ some justification esp. early years - but he really gave a crap about a lot of things, & was pretty political later especially. That bit shows he was inquisitive & discontent - but not intractable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Greg from Bloomfield:

I'm just gonna come right out and say it: This band was good.
Avatar 4:09pm Cecile:

damn skippy, Greg.
  4:09pm graham:

This is interstellar! LOVE
Avatar 4:09pm Cecile:

thanks, Brian. Love that version.
Avatar 4:12pm InBrkly:

No problem. Use a proxy server.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Greg from Bloomfield:

Rock n roll but not like the rest / And to me, America at its best. –Jojo
Avatar 4:14pm northguineahills:

ohhhh, I thought you said, "molly", not Mali.
Avatar 4:14pm Sean B.:

Lou Reed could bullshit with the very BEST of them(well not the best AS HE SAW IT...BUT IN HIS MIND THE WORST);His sense of linguistic manipulation and how to use it was percieved as "negative" but not to people like the GREAT Lester Bangs, who decided to patrake in Lou's forceful but kind of VERY roundabout way of concluding a point being "Hey man, partake in THIS so we can drive this foolish intellectual bullshit into the ground so we can really relate over a pint of beer and the true SIMPLICITY of great Rock and Roll music"..............................;Just a thought.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm DCE:

I like it, Sean B
Avatar 4:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Bangs 1st review was him *panning* the MC5 - so go figure, right...Bangs as RawkWriter was making the point the Medium is the Massage, & his Medium was Rawk...Beatles, Dylan, Warhol & Reed didn't feel any obligation to make any more sense than their interviewers or to Pander to anyone - & that's why they were a Cultural Revolution.
Avatar 4:21pm Sean B.:

Thanks buddy...;That interview was great & this was the best Lou Reed tribute I've heard yet...of the 10+ I've heard thus far.But no one has played the GREAT "Blue Mask" yet (the song)...
Avatar 4:28pm northguineahills:

Yeah, Bangs' review of MMM is pretty effin' awesome.

*actually, until I heard the bands Brian mentioned, I thought molly music was some x dance music sub-genre.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm SeanG:

sounds great!
  4:32pm Ajax:

Yeah, best Lou tribute yet! It's a shame it had to end. I don't know why more stations aren't switching to an all-Lou format for a couple of days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm tim from champaign:

I get Savage Rose and Rose Tattoo mixed up in my mind.
Avatar 4:33pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar 4:36pm InBrkly:

what other stations? It is just a few independent college stations (all paying tribute) and clear channel...
Avatar 4:38pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Now craving something from FRUMPY 2.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm DCE:

this doth rock
Avatar 4:38pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

because........ Inga...........
Avatar 4:40pm Sean B.:

"They tied his arms behind his back to teach him how to swim; They put blood in his coffee and milk in his gin" = Brilliant genius stuff...;Lou was BRILLIANT, apart from "Normal" brilliance & very FAR set apart!; But and THUS a man of the common folk!, Brothers & Sisters!.
Avatar 4:41pm Sean B.:

...believe it or not.
Avatar 4:41pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

CIRCLE! Nevermind my previous. All is right with the world.
Avatar 4:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thx Cecile ! I has e-mailed w/ Joe.
Avatar 4:43pm Chris from DC:

Man, this is Circle? Nice.
Avatar 4:44pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Soaking in it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm common:

Avatar 4:46pm Cheer:

Wowzer! this new Circle sounds mighty! hope yer good Brian!
Avatar 4:48pm northguineahills:

Circle sold their name for one album to a thrash band.
  4:48pm Rufus J Squirrel:

Supposedly Circle contracted out the name for the year and are only doing the Falcon stuff.
Avatar 4:48pm northguineahills:

..or gave it away for one album.
Avatar 4:52pm InBrkly:

Muffin man needs a lessen...whatt?
Avatar 4:53pm Cecile:

it's getting real here on Drury Lane.
Avatar 4:57pm Cecile:

beautiful music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Mike East:

goddamn...this music is making me wish it was Saturday evening and I was home washing dishes.
Avatar 5:01pm northguineahills:

I'll be washing dishes tonight!!! (no, really, I will, I just cooked last night).
Avatar 5:01pm Cecile:

What do the names Imharhan and Tartit mean?
Avatar 5:10pm Cecile:

ha, I looked up Tiniwaren and they have listened to Dire Straits!
Avatar 5:12pm Brian Turner:

Tartit = union
Avatar 5:14pm Cecile:

thanks, Brian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm tim from champaign:

I'm digging the Terakaft. I'll keep my eyes peeled for if these guys come to Chicago/ St Louis areas.
  5:21pm Tornado:

Brian. I just bought the Circle Live at WFMU and read your liner notes on what happened in the studio after they played. Is that for real? Hard to believe.
Avatar 5:23pm Whosondephone:

Loving it BABBY!
  5:24pm tahomajohn:

is this Live like right now?
  5:33pm jr:

This is great!
Avatar 5:38pm northguineahills:

Well, you were out for much of Oct.
Avatar 5:51pm northguineahills:

Man, that was a great show, I came in right when Imharhan started last July.
Avatar 5:54pm Brian Turner:

Tornado: I plead Lou Reed. Yes. No. Which WFMU was it? They put out a single LP and a double LP from their sessions here. After the first liners Jussi insisted I do the 2nd ones and I may have stretched uh, the story for the sake of entertainment, or non-entertainment haha...
  5:59pm tahomajohn:

great show thanks Brian!
