  Sun. 10/27/13 9:04pm sweet cheri:

greetings & good evening dave, got any halloween tunes around tonight?
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:04pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Hi Dave. Glad to be home with my friend, the radio. Well, okay, it's the laptop streaming the signal, but I still call it "the radio".
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:05pm pacific standard simon:

Play Metal Machine Music at 45 RPM -- it's a maxi-single.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:05pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...& evereebuddy puttin' evereebuddee dowwn...

...or playlist.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:09pm doca:

Hello Dave and Daves, are you preparing to play a maximum 2% rock and roll tribute to Lou Reed, Dave M.?
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:09pm Dave Mandl:

I don't have any Lou or VU with me, I must admit.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:11pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...do you have any Halloween 7"s of LouReed?
...We know what VU & Lou sound like. Oh yes.
...Would that Orange Juice be possible w/out him? No. ...
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:12pm Scott Briggs:

Hell Dave, if I didn't live in Pt. Washington in this
godforsaken LI hole and was close to the station I'd
bring my Velvets CDs up! Ah well. I'm sure you can
dig some up. White Light White Heat deluxe is coming
out Dec. and boy is it expensive. Oy vey. this a rough
day for me being a massive Lou and V.U. fanatic.
oh the humanity.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:12pm Dave Mandl:

Might be hard for me to keep up with the chat tonight. I'm not used to playing 3:00 cuts.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:13pm Scott Briggs:

And I thought Peter Murphy getting nicked was harsh!
There was M. Feldman concert this weekend NYC
but the tix were $75 a piece!! Bastards. I told them
to get bent!
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:14pm Droll:

I never understood what people thought was so great about VU or Reed.

Singles Going Steady: The antidote to Progressive Rock.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:14pm Dave Mandl:

@Scott: Hey. The thing is, I'm playing all singles tonight, and I don't have any VU/Lou singles. But there are plenty of bigger Lou fans than me at FMU.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:14pm sweet cheri:

great start, dave! i'm digging your show.(no pun intended..)
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:14pm Scott Briggs:

oh Droll....the contrarian feckin pot pie or whatever you are.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:15pm Scott Briggs:

I understand. Metal Machine Music not qualifying! alas.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:16pm Droll:

Scott, Sorry about that, I meant I love all the same music as you, in the same amounts. Hope you feel better now.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:16pm Scott Briggs:

Did I tell you I met Jody Stephens back in July? Totally
kicked butt. he signed by box sets...it was like mystical.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:16pm G:

Dave's Velvet is Underground at the moment
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:17pm pacific standard simon:

Monochrome Set works as a Lou tribute.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:17pm HollyT:

Hi Dave! Hope you had a nice time out of town this weekend.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:17pm sweet cheri:

you also don't have any pre-halloween tunes,dave?
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:17pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...what's so great about the Beach Boys putting Chuck Berry together w/ the Four Freshman? Someone had to do it 1st. & now we accept it as Basic - as obvious & fundamental. A huge %age of what is heard @ FMU wouldn't be what it is w/out VU?Lou.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:18pm G:

Some of those prog groups put out actual 45 edits of 8-10 minute songs, even edits of 3-4 minutes from an album-side track. For crazed completists only, imo.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:18pm David L.B. is RRN63:

  Sun. 10/27/13 9:18pm Scott Briggs:

The Velvets will be listened to 100 years from now
and the T'Pau and Human League and Dokken
albums will gather dust.... and fookin Whitesnake too.
Screw all that horrid shite.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:19pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I like Lou Reed. On a frantic rushed drive back from Pittsburgh to NJ many years ago, I was too stressed to mess with the radio and my tape of New York played over and over. I never really got tired of it.

Not everybody's favorite, but meant a lot to some of us.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:19pm Dave Mandl:

@Cheri: Alas, no.
@Holly: I did, thanks. Went pumpkin-picking with the family.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:20pm Scott Briggs:

Still one of my favorite later Lou records New York it holds
up well. Magic and Loss is pretty good too but much more
difficult to listen to .
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:20pm David L.B. is RRN63:

G: Lou's 1st album had Yes guys as sidemen - ?!
...RickWakeman on that great Eno stuff !...Bowie...
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:20pm pacific standard simon:

Actually, New York would be in my top 3 favorite post-Velvet Lou albums.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:20pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

Lou Reed was kind of like the Joe Frank of Rock 'n' roll to me.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:21pm Scott Briggs:

ha, Starship Street Hassle Troopers
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:21pm G:

Lou never covered "Here I Go Again"?
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:22pm trish:

Good listening.

Noise R Us -- that's a Toronto band, no?
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:22pm pacific standard simon:

I carved a pumpkin today. Woulda made a stencil of the Transformer cover if I'd known at the time.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:23pm sweet cheri:

lou reed WAS bad to the bone!!
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:23pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

New York is like some kind of folk history in song. Such a great snapshot of the New York of its time.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:24pm PB:

Cheri, thanks for that wonderful insight, Kinda like George Thorogood, I guess.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:25pm Scott Briggs:

Indeed. Lou had a really rough patch with like Mistrial and all that early to mid 80s...pretty terrible. When he started doing songs like Funky hot hips i was like..oh noooo
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:27pm pacific standard simon:

I wish I had one of those boxes with psychedelic graphics, hinges and a handle, for carrying 7" records. Maybe eBay?
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:28pm G:

Hey, Cheri is bad to the bone...
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:28pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...there was Fugs & GarageRock - what-have-you
- but Velvets were the 1st Alternative - accepted they were not going to be Mainstream Successes & went for Substance & Experiments & Realism
...what FMU is all about.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:28pm Droll:

The only band/artist that gets this much discussion without being played is Rush, another artist everyone can always agree on.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:29pm Scott Briggs:

any chance of Bauhaus Sanity Assassin? Dat was their final single..fan club only apparently, I'd forgotten that, but in 1983 I didn't know deek about Bauhaus.... only from The Hunger.
That movie has not aged well sad to say.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:32pm trish:

Ah. One was almost two decades ago and the other almost two decades before that.

  Sun. 10/27/13 9:32pm PB:

I always thought Loaded was the best Velvets album.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:33pm pacific standard simon:

The boxed set was the best album.

Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:34pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...& Cale produced the 1st Stooges, ModernLovers, PattiSmith...
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:34pm sweet cheri:

i got to head out for a while, dave but i'll be back a little later. see you then dave!
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:35pm Scott Briggs:

Loaded is my least favorite VU album but I love them all of course. It's a bit lightweight compared to the previous 3.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:36pm HollyT:

yay, Peter Blegvad
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:36pm Scott Briggs:

how about a Golden Palominos single of ye olde?
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:40pm G:

Oh OK!
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:40pm pacific standard simon:

I'm seeing a strong show of hands from people who think Dave hasn't already figured out what he's going to play tonight. Hmmm...
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:41pm Scott Briggs:

dats funny was playing a ton of Oh Ok on tube
a few weeks back....I only knew them from having
singles of theirs on some old REM bootleg tape
I bought in 1984 or some nonsense.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:43pm Dave Mandl:

PSS: I know what I'm going play, just not in what order.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:43pm Scott Briggs:

was inkubus succubus a single? E Neubaten?
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:44pm pacific standard simon:

Clive Bunker, baby!
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:44pm Scott Briggs:

sorry that was xmal Deutschland...my bad
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:45pm Dave Mandl:

@PSS: You know it.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:46pm Scott Briggs:

please just no T'Pau singles.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:46pm HollyT:

I hope you brought me back a pumpkin
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:47pm jeanne:

OH so you're teh one who stole this 45 from me in 1984!
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:48pm Dave Mandl:

@Holly: Will you settle for a picture of pumpkin? I have some good ones.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:49pm Droll:

Looks like Request/Anti-request night at the World of Echo... I must have missed a memo.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:49pm HollyT:

I hope you brought me back a pumpkin
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:50pm HollyT:

Nice bunch of no wave singles tonight. I wish my friend Tony C was around so I could tell him to tune in. He would love this.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:51pm HollyT:

Sorry for the double post! A picture of a pumpkin will do, but it better be a good one.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:51pm pacific standard simon:

Here's a pumpkin for you:

  Sun. 10/27/13 9:51pm Scott Briggs:

i'm a lefty guitarist and can play mine lefties right side up. kind of.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:52pm Scott Briggs:

i heard the CBGB film is dreadful!
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:55pm pacific standard simon:

Play 'em at 33 -- they last longer!
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:57pm HollyT:

Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:57pm pacific standard simon:

Thou speakest truth, Dave.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:58pm HollyT:

The opening title sequence to this film is just fantastic. Amazing animation.
  Sun. 10/27/13 9:59pm Scott Briggs:

I bought the BeeGees Jive Talkin' in 1975 I recall that distinctly. the 45. r p m
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 9:59pm Dave Mandl:

@Holly: True. I haven't seen the film in ages. I need to rectify that.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:00pm pacific standard simon:

I feel the same way about the Woody Allen Casino Royale.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:01pm David L.B. is RRN63:

  Sun. 10/27/13 10:05pm Scott Briggs:

oh my....and like Harry Chapin urghh Cats in the Cradle we all bought that bloody song.
  Sun. 10/27/13 10:06pm sweet cheri:

i'm back dave, and btw i have "WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT" on dvd,,it's a very funny movie. do you you agree?
  Sun. 10/27/13 10:06pm HollyT:

It sounds exactly the same!!! hahahhaa
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:06pm pacific standard simon:

My first 7" was probably "Green Tambourine" by The Lemon Pipers, but I wasn't a regular buyer of singles until the punk days. Rather Ripped Records (in Berkeley) and Aquarius (in San Francisco) had all the latest in indies and imports.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:07pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...I was too young & too smalltown(/'rural') for Punk Singles...
  Sun. 10/27/13 10:07pm Scott Briggs:

me growing up on L.I. in 70s it was more like fookin Record World or Korvettes for singles. Just dreadful
  Sun. 10/27/13 10:08pm HollyT:

My first single was "Undercover Angel" by Alan O'Day.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:08pm Dave Mandl:

Cheri: I do, though I haven't seen it in a long time.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:09pm pacific standard simon:

Fuego huevos. Aiye!
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:14pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...one thing the Beatles boxed set elucidates is that the transitions make more sense if you have the Singles in-between the Albums (those on 'Past Maters')...
  Sun. 10/27/13 10:14pm sweet cheri:

holly, i used to love that alan o' day tune. now i think it's overrated!
  Sun. 10/27/13 10:14pm Scott Briggs:

OMG I remember buying Shaun Cassidy Da Doo Ron Ron single in 1977. God that was awful.

  Sun. 10/27/13 10:18pm Scott Briggs:

I would. Well in 1977 I was but a young tyke anyway. I didn't know from punk anyhow...Sat. night fever and Star Wars that was about it. and Meat Loaf...barely. My aunt got to meet and hang out with Meat! For real. Scary.

@DLBRRN63: Look for the LP (CD reissue). It's really wonderful.
  Sun. 10/27/13 10:35pm sweet cheri:

tell me dave do you agree that tune by rupert holmes is really scary?
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:35pm Ike:

Hello! Sounds good.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:37pm pacific standard simon:

I'd tend to agree with that evaluation of GG&F, Rabbit, especially if you take the later Bonzos and Viv's penchant for demented story-telling into account.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:38pm Dave Mandl:

Hey there, Ike.
  Sun. 10/27/13 10:38pm HollyT:

nice one! Always liked this song, and band.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:39pm pacific standard simon:

For years and years, I attributed "One" to The Guess Who. I have no idea why.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:40pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- who wrote 'One' ? pss: I can see that. Great vocals in Guess Who...great tunes too actually...

Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:43pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Oh that's funny, PSSimon. I thought "One" was The Guess Who, too. I didn't realize I knew any Three Dog Night songs off the top of my head. Now I stand corrected.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:44pm pacific standard simon:

Yep, had to look it up. Guess if I'd bought the box I'd know.
  Sun. 10/27/13 10:44pm HollyT:

I always got Three Dog Night and Blood Sweat and Tears confused.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:45pm pacific standard simon:

  Sun. 10/27/13 10:45pm Sally:

Love the show tonight Dave! We must be around same age, with similar tastes, because we have a lot of the same singles.

Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:46pm Dave Mandl:

@Sally: Thanks. You obviously have great taste in music.
  Sun. 10/27/13 10:46pm Sally:

Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:46pm Wendy del Formaggio:

When I was a kid my Mom had this freaky 8-track from Three Dog Night with some creepy fucking people in an emergency room as the album art, and a big band-aid over the picture. I kept trying to peel the band-aid off because I thought it was real, not part of the album art, and my Mom would get pissed at me. That's my big association with Three Dog Night.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:47pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...you see these 'making of' documentaries - it really shows that the Mix we know is but one possibility - as this isolated trax trend & alt mixes show...
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:47pm Peteski:

"Hey man , how are you going to play tonight?"
Leslie West, "Like shit."
  Sun. 10/27/13 10:47pm jeanne:

Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:49pm Dave Mandl:

@Jeanne: That's the one!
  Sun. 10/27/13 10:49pm Sally:

@RRN63-I had that Three Dog Night LP! That's hilarious your mom had an 8-track of it.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:49pm Dave Mandl:

@Cheri: No doubt in my mind.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:49pm pacific standard simon:

I remember that one, Wendy -- they ran it as a full-page ad in Billboard. I think it was supposed to be a woman giving birth. (or maybe my memory is failing at last)
  Sun. 10/27/13 10:51pm sweet cheri:

g'night all, see you again next week dave.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:51pm pacific standard simon:

Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:53pm Wendy del Formaggio:

PSSimon: I think you're right about the woman giving birth. It's bringing back memories... Wow, a full-page ad. Glad I wasn't reading Billboard at age 5. I woulda been way more traumatized. haha.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:54pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...but I suppose Bop & CoolJazz are a buncha notorious smackheads...
  Sun. 10/27/13 10:55pm Sally:

Oops, I meant @Wendy not @RRN63...got confused about who was telling the Three Dog Night story. haha
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:55pm pacific standard simon:

Chris Stamp and Speedy Keene, if you can believe it.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:55pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Okay, looking at it now, it makes total sense why I was traumatized as a child. WTF?!? 1.bp.blogspot.com...

  Sun. 10/27/13 10:57pm Sally:

@Wendy, yeah, it was traumatizing to me when I bought it in jr. high! So I can imagine it must have freaked you out as a child.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 10:58pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Thx pss ! - no wonder I like the sound...
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:00pm pacific standard simon:

Aww, Dave... you didn't translate Arschloch for the good people!
  Sun. 10/27/13 11:01pm trish:

I especially like the whatnot.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:06pm Dave Mandl:

@PSS: This would have been my last radio show ever.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:07pm Dave Mandl:

@trish: The cost of whatnot has really gone through the roof.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:10pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Wait, what? I hope I'm reading that wrong. This can't be your last radio show ever, Dave. Waah!
  Sun. 10/27/13 11:11pm trish:

Well, then. Lest I forget, I heresomethingfor am going to click-click-click and pledge what I can.

It was a rough summer; I'm grateful to wfmu.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:11pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Wendy: *would've* been had he translated Arschloch (guess the French won't care when rebroadcast) : ) ...
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:11pm Droll:

Kenzo's taking over Dave's show? What did I miss?
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:11pm pacific standard simon:

Only if he had been induced to cuss in English translated from German, Wendy.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:12pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Ohhh... sorry! Thanks for the explanation, folks. I was distracted and confused. Common occurrence these days...

  Sun. 10/27/13 11:15pm Sally:

Oh no PSS, what happened to it? WISH I had it.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:15pm ottovonbqe:

Dave's getting fired because he can't translate German? This station is so pretentious.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:16pm David L.B. is RRN63:

You know, I'd like to go to sleep, but I can't because you keep playing cool records, Dave. This Kraftwerk cover is pretty fab.
  Sun. 10/27/13 11:22pm trish:

Click click click.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:23pm pacific standard simon:

My experience was that every change in roommates would lead to the disappearance of something. Fortunately, I've been married 28 years and the only record that's gone missing in that time was the copy of Trapped In The Body of A White Girl by Julie Brown that I played once too often in the presence of my wife.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:23pm ottovonbqe:

Can I get the playlist in Yiddish please?
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:23pm Droll:

Snakefinger, what a wonderful signature guitarist, you can spot his playing in just a few notes.
My copy of The Spot was stolen by a roommate because they hated hearing it so much. I miss Snakefinger.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:24pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:33pm Dave Mandl:

@PSS: True, that's brilliant.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:34pm G:

that was a really hopeful title of theirs, droll :) it didn't chart. the power and the glory kinda broke momentarily in the top 100 albums.,..

Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:37pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...I will mention 'WindChimes' by the BeachBoys just to mention them twice on one commentsboard...
  Sun. 10/27/13 11:40pm trish:

I nominate a fleece toque for next marathon premium. Or a neck gator or kerchief. eg. mec.ca
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:42pm pacific standard simon:

The WFMU scarf is still available for a nominal fee. A fleece toque would be nice, though.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:42pm B Golde:

Of course, D!
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:43pm Droll:

G, I think appearing pompous is part of the job description for prog rockers. For some reason it really works when Queen does it. Queen is over the top compared to any GG arrangement, and yet one look like conservatory drop-outs, and the other are the high-water mark for glam.
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:43pm pacific standard simon:

Ah, Petula! Her, and Spanky, are a couple of voices I never appreciated enough back in the day.

Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:45pm Dave Mandl:

That Pet Clark song is great, beautiful. Too bad my copy of the record sounds so terrible.

...'Leper' would make Ian Dury blush...
- Petula not a GeorgeMartin production is it?
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:46pm pacific standard simon:

What? I thought for sure this was an obscure Ian Dury b-side that I'd missed.

...'Know a Place' trying to stick w/ 'Downtown' formula presumably? - too 'showbizzy' for Martin if I'd thot about it - great tho' ...Makes me sad how image of liberated Mod City thrills has changed to getting popped by hiphoppers or something...
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:51pm pacific standard simon:

That great run of Petula Clark hits is largely due to the genius of Tony Hatch, who also wrote.
  Sun. 10/27/13 11:51pm sweet cheri:

dave have a happy & safe halloween!
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:52pm Dave Mandl:

Glenn Gould (yes, THAT one) did a nice radio show about the Clark/Hatch collaboration for CBC.

I need Halloween advice. I was thinking of either Mrs. Beaver and carry around a tin of muffins and straighten people's ties, Jon Bennett Ramsey or Martha Stewert going to jail (which is so 2005). So any other suggestions?
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:56pm Brigitte:

I mean Mrs. Cleaver
Avatar Sun. 10/27/13 11:57pm pacific standard simon:

Why would you send that poor dead child to jail?
