Let's not have any of that singles-going-steady stuff today, thank you very much.

Not first! Hello all.
  Wed. 10/23/13 3:05pm Laura L:

Irwin doesn't believe in going steady with records.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...like this artist's title - 'cloudy w/ a low chance of participation'...
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:06pm Whosondephone:

That's what Daddy likes!

Right, Laura. Toeing the WFMU line is not in his job description.

That painting fascinates and disturbs me. It reminds me of Ken. Where did you find it?

sweet emma! great stuff, good drumming
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:10pm Roberto:

This was playing in the Tribeca Whole Foods a few days ago. Made for an awesome shopping experience.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:11pm rrg:

Did it make you buy something?

That's supposed to be the idea. According to legend.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:11pm rrg:

This was used as the theme song to "Chuck". Am I the only one here who knows that?
  Wed. 10/23/13 3:12pm Robert:

Sounds like Short Skirt, Long Jacket, and Sweet Jane.
  Wed. 10/23/13 3:12pm founding father:

I want a girl with a long hoop skirt. Isn't even see an ankle. And a short jacket.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:12pm Roberto:

Well, logically I would have bought some cake. But I didn't. Or did I...
  Wed. 10/23/13 3:13pm plutonic relationship:

What it do Irwin?
  Wed. 10/23/13 3:15pm duane:

I want a girl with XXL undies.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:18pm Droll:

rrg, The "legend" playing music makes people come back and buy more stuff has been demonstrated a gazillion times, most recently at the Tribeca Whole Foods. Too bad the same phenomena doesn't occur in record stores.

Signals?! You're gonna play some 80's thin tie pastel jacket wearing Rush?
  Wed. 10/23/13 3:20pm perv:

Girl Scout roundup sounds like something I'd like.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:20pm Alison Porchnik:

Girl Scouts get all the attention. No one cares about the 1997 recording of 12,000 Camp Fire Girls in Kalamazoo, singing narcocorridos.
Wed. 10/23/13 3:21pm Listening Out There:

What happens when 10,000 Maniacs meet 12,000 Girl Scouts?
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:21pm Mike East:

fmu tweeted an article today about a pastor/radio host telling people to stop buying girl scout cookies because their organization promotes lesbianism and abortions.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:22pm Ken From Hyde Park:

That's a lot of cookies.
  Wed. 10/23/13 3:23pm Kirsten:

Irwin, these singing Campire Girls are utterly moving. xo Mrs. Clay Pigeon
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:23pm Michele:

HI Irwin! Loving this Girl Scout track.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:23pm rrg:

Did...did you pick up the needle and drop it on the record farther along? Live, on air?
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:24pm Whosondephone:

The lyrics - www.scoutsongs.com...
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:25pm rrg:

Appropriately so.
Wed. 10/23/13 3:26pm Listening Out There:

I miss Greasy Kid Stuff
  Wed. 10/23/13 3:26pm Robert:

I'm impressed you can even synchronize that many voices, let alone make the product sound that good. Occupy Wall St. could've taken lessons.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:27pm rrg:

Send them all to reclaimmedia.com. Get 'em digitized.
  Wed. 10/23/13 3:28pm Robert:

L.O.T., what I miss from Greasy Kid Stuff is when they would sneak adult material in. And by "adult" I don't mean XXX.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:29pm Whosondephone:

Especially the dynamics! @Robbert.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:29pm rrg:

Well, I listened to Greasy Kid Stuff. And then to The Radio Thrift Shop. Both gone now from WFMU.

Only Irwin left worth listening to.
Wed. 10/23/13 3:31pm Listening Out There:

Robert: Yep. Anything worthwhile that's intended for kids usually has something adultish to make it palatable for the household. E.g. Bugs Bunny, Loony Toons, Peewee's Playhouse, etc.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:33pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@LOT - Add Rocky & Bulwinkle to that list.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:33pm Droll:

rrg, Stan's still on, one of FMU's best-kept secrets!
The show I most miss is A440/Stochastic.
  Wed. 10/23/13 3:35pm jan:

@robert. The girl scout chorus would be more impressive if individually miked. Consider the 40 Part Motet by Janet Cardiff with 40 singers played back through 40 loudspeakers.
Wed. 10/23/13 3:36pm Listening Out There:

Ken - Yeah, I was thinking of that too. Oh, and hip hop.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:36pm Irwin:

Droll: A440 Stochastic will fill for me in two weeks.
Wed. 10/23/13 3:37pm Listening Out There:

Yay, Bethany. Great substitution...
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:40pm Scott Williams:

I liked it even better than "Watching Scotty Grow"!
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:41pm Droll:

I, Thanks for the heads up, and picking my crush for a fill-in!

...and this cover demonstrates a "conspicuous appreciation".
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:51pm rrg:

40% raised!
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:53pm Irwin:

Can we hit 50%? Any generous souls out there?
  Wed. 10/23/13 3:54pm Brendan:

I miss hearing Marshall Crenshaw, funny but now that I think of it his vocal phrasing sounds like Ben Folds.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 3:56pm rrg:

Oh my, it was funny there when she suddenly sang "bow wow wow".
  Wed. 10/23/13 3:58pm berbo:

happiness is a day with no meetings.
  Wed. 10/23/13 3:58pm Brendan:

Give me Maryann over Ginger anyday, come to think of it, then give me Ginger any night.
  Wed. 10/23/13 3:59pm Brendan:

Why leave the island
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:00pm G:

Uh oh :)
  Wed. 10/23/13 4:00pm Robert:

rrg, wasn't Laura Cantrell just filling in a couple months ago? Her voice stays with me so long, it probably seems more recent than it was.
  Wed. 10/23/13 4:01pm Robert:

I miss Wild Girl too, though she wasn't one of my favorites and was on for only a brief period in the 1980s IIRC.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:01pm G:

@Robert: Aug 18. Three times this year
  Wed. 10/23/13 4:02pm Robert:

Let's reminisce about Paul & Morbid while we're at it.

I'm back! How much misery and human suffering did I miss?
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:03pm Roberto:

Joe sounds different here. Less deadpan.
  Wed. 10/23/13 4:05pm Robert:

And then there was Thos. Edison's Attic, which was the Antique Phonograph Radio Hour with less personality...actually NO personality IIRC.

Whoa. Didn't see that coming.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:07pm G:

great minds etc
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:07pm Roberto:

Jinx, G.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:08pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

Is this early Joe Frank? To me his voice sounds younger.
  Wed. 10/23/13 4:08pm Robert:

What's he building in there?
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:09pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

Then he gave birth later to an ass baby.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:09pm Roberto:

Nooo! Take the money dammit!
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:09pm G:

he earned it...
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:10pm Ken From Hyde Park:

He should be quite hung over at this point.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:11pm G:

"Hey kid, you weren't using your ass. I just borrowed it for a while."
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:13pm G:

The one thing I haven't figured out yet is which character is the queen.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:14pm G:

Maybe the woman and the man are married, or exes...
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:16pm Ken From Hyde Park:

This was evidently written before Facebook was invented.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:16pm Sean D. Daily:

FIFTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS?! That's a small favor?!
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:16pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

When I was very young I had a job as an oil changer. We were not supposed to take tips. An old man kept insisting I take his tip. I kept refusing. His face went angry and he grabbed my hand and shoved the money in it and grumbled "Take it you son of a bitch!"

Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:19pm ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

I figured but that is just too oblique.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:19pm G:

It wasn't oblique to him...
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:21pm ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Apparently it was if he took afterward.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:21pm G:

Nah, he totally got it. He moved out of the country.

West German toothpaste?
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:21pm Sean D. Daily:

West German toothpaste? Well, that dates this show.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:22pm ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

Ah, Gauloises.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:22pm G:

Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:23pm G:

Now the old guy would think he's a manslut.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:24pm SeanG:

I like it raw.
  Wed. 10/23/13 4:28pm Robert:

Am I a meanie if I was LOL at the subject of this "Queen of Puerto Rico"?
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:29pm Carmichael:

Well dang, just got here to miss Joe Frank and a lot of the witty repartee. I got me some catchin' up to do.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:29pm Irwin:

$80 away from hitting 50% for this show's goal. Can two of ya's kick in $40 each? Take pity on a faceless soul with good intentions. Or pledge because you love Joe Frank's ass.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:30pm Irwin:

I meant "soulless face," of course.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:32pm Alison Porchnik:

A face only his cat could love. Well, and a bunch of other people too.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:34pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

I already gave what I can for now. I lost my job due to budget cuts. While job searching I saw an add from a 62 y/o man in wheel chair who needs a male to come clean his place. And he specifically asked for the person to be willing to do the cleaning in his underwear.

Hey! The cow is moving.

I've seen this before. It's a celebration of 50% raised.

Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:54pm steve:

i missed Joe Frank... was it bleak?
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:56pm G:

Possibly the backstory of Joe Frank's book availibility is a dark tale of disillusionment. Just a stab.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:56pm G:

No, steve, this one was really lighthearted.
  Wed. 10/23/13 4:57pm Ratso:

From the horse's mouth. Joe Frank trashes his sole book:
BLVR: Do you feel your work on the written page is not fully realized? You wrote a book of short stories, Queen of Puerto Rico—

JF: I’m glad you mentioned that. I hated that book.

BLVR: Why?

JF: It just didn’t play. If you took any of my radio shows and you took the music out of them, they wouldn’t be remotely the same thing. Music is really important.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:58pm rrg:

Who's this guy BLVR?
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 4:58pm steve:

im still waiting on the uplifting episode... there has to be one, right? maybe one day he started writing immediately after petting a purring cat or hugging a loved one

Jonathan Goldstein interviewing Joe in an online magazine The Believer.

  Wed. 10/23/13 5:03pm Laura L:

Thanks for the Alasdair--good any old time. Yeah, rrg, as I recall A.M. didn't want to say who was K.

Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:14pm Carmichael:

Jo Jo Gunne was the original guitarist.
  Wed. 10/23/13 5:16pm Jim Duffy:

Nice Tom Wilson work on that fine Dion track. And good on you, Irwin, for doing your bit to bring Tom Wilson to greater attention.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:26pm Carmichael:

Strum that box, dude. STRUM!!
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:31pm rrg:

Dion had a few other nice things post-1969, some of which showed up on those superb Warner/Reprise "Loss Leaders" collections.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:35pm Droll:

I remember "SUPER SAVER" stickers, but I don't remember "LOSS LEADER" stickers on cut-outs and bargain bin music.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:38pm rrg:

I'm not sure if you're being droll, Droll, or whether you actually don't know about the WB LL collections.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

rrg 3:11 - I was a 'Chuck' fan - I guess w/put the lyrics I only ever partially knew that it was 'Short Skirt' - !...

Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:40pm Droll:

I meant that, I don't remember ironically branded albums from Warner... Are you saying I can't claim that as the name of my new music label? Loss Leader Music Group, LLC?

Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:41pm Carmichael:

Loss Leaders would often be printed on the inner paper sleeve of WB albums. That was the 1st time I ever saw the name Yusef Lateef in print.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...that's right Carm.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...you got stones to call yourself 'Coltrane' anything...okay track & all...
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:46pm rrg:

The Loss Leaders were a series of bargain-price albums, $1 per LP, mostly double-LPs plus a few single-LP and one triple-LP collections, available only by mail order (no record club involved). They were intended to promote Warner/Reprise artists who might otherwise have been overlooked, liberally sprinkled with selections by more well-known artists. Some real rarities and gems in there, along with clever and entertaining liner notes, many written by what's-his-name who is/was Dr. Demento (though not yet that at the time).
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:49pm Irwin:

Dr. D: Barry Hansen, roommate of Spirit.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...skipped out - knocked out by that Chris Shaw cover of Syd's Floyd...
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:53pm Droll:

RRG, Special packaging, or just moving old stock? I still have a box full of cassettes I made of Dr. Demento around 1981 using my shoebox cassette recorder sitting in front of a Realistic clock radio. Those need digitizing so badly...
  Wed. 10/23/13 5:55pm Robert:

rrg, the name you're thinking of is Barry Hansen. I knew someone who was a college dorm-mate of his.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I have some memory of some underground comic-like face associated w/ Loss Leaders ; not even sure by now if I only saw the adverts on sleeves or actually ended up w/ one or two...
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:56pm Droll:

Thanks Irwin -- see yinz next week, but not two weeks.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:57pm rrg:

No, Droll, these were specially-prepared and packaged collections, unique. To young me they were very exciting and influential. It's regrettable that they haven't ever been re-released in any form.

WB released these all these all through the 1970s.

A good description of them here:

  Wed. 10/23/13 5:57pm Robert:

Gah! With delays here, I see info was beaten by Irwin's. I don't know if my friend was also a roommate of Spirit's.
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:57pm Aaron in Minneapolis:

So much for the silent fundraiser
Avatar Wed. 10/23/13 5:58pm rrg:

Huh? 6pm? Huh?
