You see a blanket on the ground. It's your favorite color, smooth and soft. You can sit on it, or lie on it. It's a flying blanket, and you are the pilot. You are in control. You can fly anywhere you wish, just by thinking about it. You are the pilot.

Is Higgins Waterproof Black Magic Band on the show tonight?
Avatar    Mon. 10/7/13 9:18pm fleep:

Are all their songs about ink?
  Mon. 10/7/13 9:19pm pinball:

I think so...
Avatar Mon. 10/7/13 9:28pm Dan Bodah:

Hi all! Looking forward to spilling some ink on airwaves.

'I Want You' deffo Johnny...
  Mon. 10/7/13 9:48pm PB:

Pretty sure that was sung by McCartney. Beatles weren't writing too much stuff together at that point.
  Mon. 10/7/13 9:49pm PB:

No you're right, that was definitely Lennon. Not sure what I was thinking.
Avatar    Mon. 10/7/13 9:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...that 20th Century - starting to be a long time ago...

Yeah Lennon! Of course. That hoarse ripped voice...

...all angsty & minimalist primal screaming for Yoko...

RRNov63, ain't that the truth.

...one weird thing about Abbey Road is the Moog on it. Beatles & Moog together seems weird. They put white noise on that one...

AMG says Lennon was striving to capture some of the "heavier" sounds of the day, like Cream and Hendrix.

  Mon. 10/7/13 10:05pm Tom M.:

Lennon wanted to sing McCartney's "Oh! Darling," which was suited to his vocal style at the time, but McCartney insisted on singing it himself since he wrote it. So Lennon sang "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" instead, and they ended up with two primal scream numbers on Side One.
Avatar    Mon. 10/7/13 10:06pm Droll:

[nodding in agreement that John would sound better leading Oh Darling]

I used to have a weekly, after work "45's at 33 stoney-playback session" with an old buddy of mine. Once you get past the messed up vocals, the music takes on a whole other dimension.
  Mon. 10/7/13 10:09pm r i s k y:

@Blacktooth : AHAHAHAHAH!!! Laughing my ass off.org SAY DAT!!!
Avatar    Mon. 10/7/13 10:15pm Blacktooth:

Haha! It's true! Thrash-metal becomes, like, the best doom-metal you've ever heard! That among other things. Hell, even some Beach Boys works out. It's an awesome experiment.
  Mon. 10/7/13 10:17pm Tom M.:

flangetastic whammy bar
  Mon. 10/7/13 10:19pm PB:

McCartney's vocal on Oh Darling is pretty damn good.
Avatar    Mon. 10/7/13 10:23pm PKNY:

I gotta roll with @PB on this one: McCartney on "Oh Darling". I don't think John could've nailed the Little Richard-like "woo"s like Paul.
  Mon. 10/7/13 10:24pm PB:

Speaking of vocals, David Thomas's voice always sounded so odd to me for such a big dude.
  Mon. 10/7/13 10:27pm pinball:

Love love love live these guys!
  Mon. 10/7/13 10:27pm Tom M.:

According to Beatles wiki, Macca thought his vocals didn't sound rough enough and would only do one take a day, then go practice in the bathtub.
Avatar    Mon. 10/7/13 10:32pm Droll:

(paraphrasing) Sir Paul thought John should have sung it, but was being a control-freak instead.
  Mon. 10/7/13 10:34pm PB:

McCartney a control freak? Who ever heard of such a thing.
  Mon. 10/7/13 10:34pm Tom M.:

@Droll, that's how Lennon told it
Avatar    Mon. 10/7/13 10:38pm Droll:

Don't get me wrong, that control freak single-handedly wrote and performed some of my favorite music. Lots of drama goes with being one of the 20th Century's most significant cultural touchstones. Who are we to speculate?
  Mon. 10/7/13 10:40pm Tom M.:

It's easy to imagine how it would have sounded but impossible to know which would be better, which is what keeps people talking about it. On the acoustic demo tapes for the white album you can hear them all singing on some of the songs that were later done solo. Some of them sound better too
  Mon. 10/7/13 10:40pm PB:

He was a once in a lifetime talent whose talent mysteriously completely dried up after the Beatles broke up. Embarrassingly bad solo career. Horrid.
  Mon. 10/7/13 10:41pm Tom M.:

Love that ink Mr. Higgins!
  Mon. 10/7/13 10:42pm PB:

The solo acoustic version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps on the Anthology is so much better than the White Album version.
Avatar    Mon. 10/7/13 11:16pm doca:

This album was the soundtrack to my 15 years

...I often find I prefer rawer less-Produced 'demo' versions of things...like sketches being more interesting than complete paintings - more the Lowest Common Denominator ~ Consensus Reality market responds to smooth surface texture because it wants an emollient to make it's sleepwalk smoother - not like we who want validation of our challenging turbulence...or that's my theory, which is mine...

Thanks all for tuning in, and thanks to HWBMB for playing killer tunes tonight!

Zats...pretty much missed the whole show this evening, what with phone calls and other things. I'm sure it was a good one.
Avatar Mon. 10/7/13 11:53pm Dan Bodah:

Just a reminder, don't forget we're fundraising -- we need your help to convert our empty-room-with-a-stage into the radio theater of dreams. Then you can all come see these sessions live! www.wfmu.org...
