Evening, radio lovers.

hey dave. hey everyone. breaking bad-spoiler-free area i hope :)

Or radio-lovers.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm BDR:

Hey Man, thank goodness you're not up against the most anticipated two hours of television in the last twenty years.
Avatar 9:06pm Dave Mandl:

Hey bloopy, BDR. I can handle it.

Hi D!
Avatar 9:11pm Droll:

What's a "television"?
Avatar 9:11pm Dave Mandl:

Hey DLBRRN63, Holly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Fusion TV Refuseniks...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...some device that entranced the minds of the 20th Century - Zappa wrote a song about slime coming out of them...'I have existed for years - but very little has changed'...
Avatar 9:14pm Dave Mandl:

I'll watch Breaking Bad on DVD five years from now. That seems to be my M.O.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm fleep:

Droll: a box that induces depression and anxiety. Or what the rabbit said.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...when the hell am I gonna watch a whole box full of a series??...
Avatar 9:18pm Dave Mandl:

Greetings Droll, fleep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...this Mothers of Gut make me think of Adrian Belew...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...& now Steve Howe...
Avatar 9:21pm Droll:

fleep, Boxes have bad associations, television should work on packaging. Spheres, cylinders, cones... flat seems to be fashionable.

AB solo material was almost never that mathy, he was more or less art pop. Fripp was the mathematician.
Avatar 9:22pm kent concentrate:

@BDR Oh, you must be referring to the New England Sunday Night Football game. Man, this radio time slot just can't catch a break. Get it? Catch pun on football / break pun too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- yeah Droll - it was the voice too I guess. Someone said Fripp did the Horizontal lines, & Belew the Vertical splashes, or the like...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm pacific standard simon:

Hey, here, hi. Monica's Ms. Turntables did indeed inspire me to find some cocktails and fish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm pacific standard simon:

I have the same TVMO, Dave -- didn't watch Deadwood until the series was over, then watched 'em all from Netflix straight through.
Avatar 9:27pm Droll:

Adding "-y" at the end does not stop it from being "prog". Strike 1.
Avatar 9:30pm doca:

I guess it's quiet because everyone else at WFMU are watching the Breaking Bad finale
Avatar 9:30pm doca:

But we're here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...PostRock - it's, like, *after* Rock - because, like, that's gone, right? - it's totally *not* rock - but yet still, uh, totally needs to absolutely reference 'Rock' in its' very name. Hope that clears it up for you...
Avatar 9:32pm kent concentrate:

I'm here only because I don't have cable T,V.. Just kidding, I'd be here anyway if I had cable T.V. Yeah, I'd be here anyway, yeah...
Swag For Life Member 9:33pm 12539:

They named it post-rock to get around the 2% rule.
Avatar 9:33pm Dave Mandl:

@doca: No, I didn't mean you folks. Things just sounded unusually quiet in my headphones. Just my imagination, I'm sure.
Avatar 9:34pm Dave Mandl:

@kent: Aw, thanks.
@12539: That's totally legal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Nardo:

The Music for Imaginary Films sounds interesting. My favorite imaginary radio personality now has his own film which I desperately need to see. That DJ being Alan Partridge.
Avatar 9:34pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: If I hit a foul ball, does that count?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...& that's *not* the same pedantic grammatical argument against the term 'PostModern'...it's totally Post that argument...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm pacific standard simon:

Oh, I thought you said "post modem".
Avatar 9:37pm kent concentrate:

If it has even the slightest whiff of an African beat, it's still R&R
Unless it's not.
Avatar 9:38pm Droll:

I also loathe the "post-rock" term. Rock music died when it was old enough that the people playing it grew up listening to it. Mid- to late-70's, not coincidentally the same time as the birth of hip hop, which died in turn sometime during the 00's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...yeah pss - the Post Office is still using dial-up modems - that's why they're going under...See - I'm on top of all this...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...I'm *not* saying I don't like Music that might be called 'PostRock' !
Avatar 9:40pm Dave Mandl:

OK, I've got an exclusive photo, and I'll post it here first. Beautiful panorama shot taken here a few minutes ago with the new iPhone photo app.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm fleep:

Categorizing the music I'm hearing is not relevant to my experience, anymore than the names of the musicians. I'm listening to vibrations. Some good, some not.
  9:41pm Dave M:

Avatar 9:42pm Dave Mandl:

Not clickable, unfortunately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm fleep:

It's great, Dave, it should be on the FMU home page.
Avatar 9:44pm Dave Mandl:

Thanks. Yeah, let's see what Ken says.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm pacific standard simon:

That request you wanted? It's... uh... there...?
Avatar 9:46pm Dave Mandl:

No, we don't have those records, unfortunately. I've got them at home.
Avatar 9:46pm pgw in mntclr:

i speak no spanish, but Aterciopelados' "Bolero Falaz" is my jam.
Avatar 9:48pm kent concentrate:

WOW, nice pic. That is **not** the mental image I had of the studio, my listening experience will never be the same.
Avatar 9:48pm Dave Mandl:

@pgw in m: I don't think I know that one. It's not on the CD I have here, anyway.
Avatar 9:49pm Dave Mandl:

@kc: Can you unsee it?
Avatar 9:50pm kent concentrate:

@dave That's what see said. sorry, couldn't help myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...Didn't picture the 'Studio' in the 'Library' - but a lovely sight in any event...
Swag For Life Member 9:51pm 12539:

Nice photo, Dave. Do you use the Dewey Decimal system?
Avatar 9:53pm kent concentrate:

@dlb Yes, library. Now I want to see the studio too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...makes me realize I picture the Studio differently for each DJ/Program !...
Avatar 9:55pm pgw in mntclr:

yeah, i think it's one of their early songs. i saw the video on "mtv espanol" years ago when i was dogsitting, and couldn't get the chorus melody out of my head.
  9:55pm trish:

Good pano Dave. That is one gigantic looking tissue box on the right there. For gigantic honking sneezes no doubt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...it's kind of austere for DaveM here - no bedmusic allowed...
Avatar 9:57pm Droll:

The record library picture made me stop breathing. I have been to the Magic Factory, but never admitted to the Inner Sanctum.

Under-rated Bowie record?! That was my GATEWAY! Difficult to overstate the influence of AB on Listener Droll!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...& like the white Playlist page...
Avatar 10:00pm kent cockroach:

@dlb Now that you mention it, me too. Am better off left in my ignorance of braodcast atmosheres
Avatar 10:01pm Droll:

Anyone who has done radio envisions a locker room or mop closet every time, everywhere on the dial.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- w/ Connectivity - just Seeing Radio Personalities was a Big Threshold...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Uncle Michael:

Edith can wail on that squeezebox.
Avatar 10:02pm Droll:

...and clipboards. Lots of clipboards.
Avatar 10:04pm FancyfaceFrank:

@droll That's what I had imagined but was ashamed to admit it. Execpt Ken adds a whole new level with his smelloradio 'dead animal in the wall' premium.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Did she really play her own accordion - ??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...Joe Frank looks like 'Joe Frank', though - a tremendous relief...
Avatar 10:06pm Dave Mandl:

@trish: I think that's actually two tissue boxes. Old radio trick.
Avatar 10:08pm Droll:

FFF, You wouldn't believe the cumulative breath smell accumulating on a broadcast microphone. The FMU mic's windscreen is probably a Superfund Site.

[Great dramatic broadcast pause here]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Uncle Michael:

My microphone recently offered me gum.
  10:10pm trish:

Vinyl-sized kleenex box.
Avatar 10:10pm FranknFire:

@droll: probably as bad as the steering wheel center on my '55 Chrysler, I don't think it's ever been wiped down.
Avatar 10:10pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Not true. Everyone here practices excellent oral hygiene.
  10:11pm trish:

Er-uh, LP-sized.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm fleep:

It's true. I've heard gargling on air. At least I think it was gargling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...sometimes on each other. Not very often...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm David L.B. is RRN63:

That's not Gargling. That's our Programming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm pacific standard simon:

I hear bones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm David L.B. is RRN63:

I hear smart people.
Avatar 10:13pm Lord Fancyface:

@DLB: Sounds like a broom closet tongue lashing to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...be glad there are mops in that closet...
Avatar 10:17pm Droll:

I don't think because all the DJs are drunk on air qualifies as "alcohol kills germs" defense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Uncle Michael:

Evan and John having been band-mates, Evan may not mind.
Swag For Life Member 10:32pm 12539:

DaveM, Discogs says the Bennink collaborations were "1990 in various Dutch locations." They list titles, too!

Avatar 10:32pm Dave Mandl:

@UM: True, but still. And Evan's done a lot of good music on his own. He was musical director for the Backyardigans (kids' cartoon), I think. My daughter used to love that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm pacific standard simon:

Boogie With The Hook -- is that a John Lee Hooker reference?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...the only member of the family ya can chooose is thuh dawg...
Avatar 10:35pm Dave Mandl:

@12539: Thanks. That's probably it. This disc came out around '96. I think some the recordings were recent, but some go back as far as '77.
  10:35pm trish:

1996? http://eugenechadbourne.com/pages/Recordings/BoogieWithHook.htm
Avatar 10:38pm Dave Mandl:

@trish: Yup, that's the one. For some reason not all that info is given on the CD.
  10:54pm KP:

Hey Dave. Eugene Chadbourne turns out to be an entertaining and fortuitous car parking backing track.
Avatar 10:55pm Droll:

No more need for the "guilty" apology for disco than prog.
Avatar 10:57pm Dave Mandl:

@KP: Glad to hear it!
@Droll: No apology at all. I think it's very nice stuff. I loved that Willie Wright reissue, and I wrote a review of it.
Avatar 11:00pm Dave Mandl:

I think I owe you an apology for not playing *enough* prog.
Avatar 11:00pm ottovonbqe:

Nice show tonight Dave. Making drudgery palatable.
Avatar 11:02pm Dave Mandl:

@otto: Thanks. Wish I could wipe out the drudgery completely, but my powers are limited.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm sinister dexter:

i love this song!! woohoo!!
Avatar 11:12pm Droll:

DM, I normally ignore such things, but the editors appear to have the night off and these typos are making my skin crawl: Ahsley->Ashley, The Lodger->Lodger
Avatar 11:17pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Are you sure? I don't see either of those.
Avatar 11:20pm Droll:

Oh memory hole, if only you were real...
  11:24pm Marmalade Owl:

Evening Dave! Good to hear you tonight..
Avatar 11:26pm Dave Mandl:

Hey, Marmalade. Good to have you among us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm pacific standard simon:

Excellent. Came to this material via The Holy Modal Rounders' first two records.
Avatar 11:27pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: You know I'd never do that ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm pacific standard simon:

Watch out, Droll -- you could disappear in smoke!
Avatar 11:30pm Droll:

Hard to believe we've been in the "final stretch" for over an hour already.

PSS, Disappear? That's usually how I appear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm pacific standard simon:

I thought Dave was planning on playing 3 album sides...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm Tome:

Howdy DM..this is a nice diversion,, (gets the Opici Jug)...
Avatar 11:33pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Next week's final stretch will begin at 9:06.
Avatar 11:33pm Droll:

PSS, HA! Me too! I thought he was cueing up Tales of Topographical Oceans.
Avatar 11:34pm Dave Mandl:

You mean *from* Topographical Oceans, right?
Avatar 11:35pm Droll:

[on floor, gut spitting laughter] Yeah, the one with all the notes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm pacific standard simon:

Next week, Welcome Back, My Friends, to the Show That Never Ends... Ladies and Gentlemen, Emerson, Lake & Palmer. All 6 sides.
Avatar 11:36pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Funny coincidence: Last night a good friend was telling me about the period when he played with Peter Stampfel (in the '80s, I think).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm pacific standard simon:

My buddies and I smoked any number of doobies listening to that.
Avatar 11:37pm Dave Mandl:

(Coincidence because of your mention of the Holy Modal Rounders.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm pacific standard simon:

My admiration of Peter Stampfel is boundless -- perhaps because it is at a distance?
Avatar 11:38pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Even I had trouble getting through "Tales."
Avatar 11:40pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Well, my friend had nothing bad to say about Stampfel. Seems like a very nice guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm pacific standard simon:

I could never tell. Guess you'd have to be either super nice or super nasty to survive all the weird scenes he's been through.
Avatar 11:43pm Droll:

I think TfTO was what ultimately led me astray of prog. Notes per dollar, it's a great value, but you spend twice as much time trying to rinse it off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm pacific standard simon:

Speaking of which, how do you like our weather tonight, Droll?
Avatar 11:46pm Dave Mandl:

This same friend also told me he owns Richard Hell's old bass. I never knew that.
Avatar 11:47pm Droll:

PSS, You're new here -- this is how it is: Summer runs July 5th until Labor Day. They threw the switch and it's just like this until June. Well, the darkness lengthens by a few hours, but this is it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm pacific standard simon:

Already had one power outage during this show.
  11:51pm trish:

Enjoyed the stereo on that Baumann track at this hour.
Avatar 11:52pm Droll:

PSS, Glad to hear the Kitsap PUD still enforces conservation through unplanned outage! After my first winter, I always kept plenty of firewood.
Avatar 11:54pm Dave Mandl:

@trish: I'm a sucker for stereo tricks. I actually didn't notice that one.
  11:56pm trish:

Worth checking out, that one.
Reverb in stereo or something.
Avatar 11:56pm Droll:

Mandl, Thanks for editing the playlist this week. Hard to believe it's already next week's final stretch...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm pacific standard simon:

I was listening to a Youngbloods album at work this week, and thought it was cool that they had included vocals-less instrumental tracks, then realized that one channel had gone out.
Avatar 11:59pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Haha. It is!
@pss: That's great. Same happened with me and some old Beatle records (like "Rain").
Swag For Life Member 11:59pm 12539:

Thanks, Dave M.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am pacific standard simon:

Decided not to fix it for a while and sang karaoke instead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the show, Dave. Enjoyed it a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am pacific standard simon:

Fun show, Dave. See you next.
