I have no idea what that gal is shaking. Baby formula? A cocktail? . . .

CB2 just said, "So far she's pretty damn good!"
  7:08pm Robert:

If there were actually a cocktail in that shaker, wouldn't she have her hands over the ends of it?

Monica, just found out my dad died on the beach near Sea Isle City, NJ today. So if you can think of a song that might capture the spirit of an 86 year old man who still body surfed, that would be great.

I wish I had moved to NY in the mid '70s when I had the chance. Spent 30 years in San Francisco instead, and thoroughly hated it by the time I left. Now live in the last place I will ever live, a small island near Seattle.
  7:42pm Roy Boy:

Thanks to all for their sympathies. When I left New York, my roommate told me I'd be back, that the allure was that strong, and that he himself would never leave, He now lives in Tokyo.
Avatar 7:42pm CB2:

CB1 just said to me "We found our chair and we are rockin' in it!"

Avatar 7:45pm deanland:

Umpteen years back, the ex & I almost moved to Charleston, SC. I could easily have run my business from there where everything costs less, and a house there cost a mere fraction of what equivalent housing would cost in the NY area. Any number of things kept that move from occurring, and am I ever glad. NY is home, NYC is where I belong. Mrs. Yankfan never wants to live elsewhere, and I don't want to live without Mrs. Yankfan. Anywhere else would require significant travel to get to Yankee Stadium, where we go on so many Summertime evenings or afternoons. So here we stay, happily ensconced
in the Big Apple.
  7:48pm Wrner:

Mmmm...I moved to NYC in 78 too!...the good ole bad days. OH NO Monica, don't hit the road, this still is the greatest city anywhere...just back from 3 weeks in Spain, planning month in India...but this town is as international and exotic as anywhere.
Avatar 7:49pm dale:

i left manhattan after a layoff, but i had a weekend place to turn into a forever place close enough to make ny a sometime place. that said, i don't really care to go back into manhattan. it's an hour and a half away - which is nice to know. after 20 some years there i know it just isn't like it was when i was young, broke and full of wonder.
  7:51pm trish:

Uprooting is major.
Subletting far less so.
Avatar 7:54pm deanland:

The collective will of your listeners would mean you'd have to find your way to Jersey City every Sunday, Monica. That might mean a lot of schlepping, perish the thought.
Avatar 7:54pm Monica:

Hi there, Listener Gary... 12539 - yes, thanks so much!!...Wrner - hello!.... trish 0- i hear ya, lady!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm pacific standard simon:

There's always room on the Drummer stream, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...when I left Santa Barbara, CA - & the whole WestCoast - after 16 years, it was because I just couldn't afford it anymore. This was around the time of Enron's rolling blackouts - which turned out to be phony, & shortly before they put Arnie in as Governator in the belief he was the action hero to get the financial disaster in order in Cali.

- So for years I been back in smalltown NewHampshuh where I'm from originally - & altho' on one hand it is Home - on the other I consider myself in a cultural State of Exile.
...I ain' never been a CityBoy: failure to launch that way...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm pacific standard simon:

Hello DJ - Greatest song ever!
  8:00pm Big Leo (aka ?):

Mo, can't u just imagine don bowman calling frankie crocker at 'bls..?!
  8:01pm Robert:

I'm living within a half mile of where I grew up in the Bronx, and have spent precious little time elsewhere. However, as the years go by and friends die or move away, there's less & less tying me to here, and I'm contemplating moving to NE Penna. in accord with my friend's idea -- http://vrilology.org/ALF.html . That are is fireworks-friendly, which would allow me to indulge in lots of experiment'n.

However, I'm broke, practically unemployed, and even if I had a car and a license (haven't for a few yrs.), I developed a hwy. driving phobia a decade ago. So, what'll give?
Avatar 8:01pm CB1:

I say "Go North, young lady!"
Avatar 8:01pm Monica:

Big Leo - now that's funny!!
Avatar 8:02pm deanland:

@Big Leo...more like Joey Bonner, may he RIP.
Avatar 8:03pm dale:

monica - did you ever call in and win some paco panties?
Avatar 8:07pm dale:

i slept on a lot of kitchen floors. woke up to cockroaches scurryin'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...moving into a new place - it's all empty & looks big - & you imagine all the ways you could arrange & decorate...but you move in, & you move your stuff in - & it's the same old stuff & there's no room...
  8:08pm Davee:

RRN63: Dump the stuff!
Avatar 8:09pm CB1:

Gee, this Nilsson goes great with the shaker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Davee: Yeah - that's one response to the metaphor...or reality...
  8:09pm Davee:

Especially if it's from Walmart!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It is *not* from Walmart.
  8:11pm Davee:

I'm glad to hear that - I hate WM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...it's from the thriftstore I work @!...
  8:13pm Robert:

Is this a parody of some well-known jazz? "How Long Can Disco On", I mean?
  8:15pm Davee:

Thrift stores r the best!
Avatar 8:15pm dale:

thrift stores are no good anymore. all the good stuff was made in the 30's through the 50s and those folks died in the 70s and 80s. 90s were good for records because everyone ditched them for cds. salvay today is all pressboard furniture and pilly old navy fleeces
Avatar 8:16pm doca:

  8:18pm Robert:

Rabbit, ever read the digression in "The Maltese Falcon" about the guy who just up & did that out of the blue, taking a new identity, remarrying, and telling none of his significant others? Presumably based on a real case Dashiel Hammet was familiar with.
Avatar 8:18pm Monica:

dunno, robert, just heard it for thye first time tonight...hola, doca!!...CB1 - yay!!... deanland - you said joey bonner!!!... thanks, CB1 , we shall see.... robert & revrab. thanks for sharing....pacstan - right????...

Thrift stores r the best!
Avatar 8:22pm Davee:

for all kinds of shit!
  8:22pm Doug Schulkind:

Should've in included a NOT FOR AIRPLAY warning on that Bowman track. Sorry, Monica!
  8:23pm Robert:

That Hammet story-withn-a-story is haunting because it's bizarre yet believable, and because it ended anticlimactically. The guy was found after a few years, said he did it for no good reason, but had a new life, everybody made up & got over it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...SoCal is the home of Noir as well as Sunshine.
  8:24pm Robert:

Funny, Doug, but I didn't even any bleeping of it nor salty language other than a goddammit, which doesn't even count. I guess I'm desensitized.
Avatar 8:25pm Davee:

  8:27pm Robert:

It's not Hammet's only digression within a novel. Another concerned cannibalism, very different type of story! I forgot which one that was in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I'm not really into Mystery, but Noir appeals to me somehow. Consider Chandler a great poet!...
Avatar 8:29pm Monica:

Roy Boy - this one's for you, kiddo.... damn right, schulkind:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yerknow - Noir's not really about Plot...
  8:31pm Robert:

I have a thing for anticlimaxes in mystery stories. I think the one of "Lost" was a false conclusion, to be elucidated later. One of my favorite endings of "Radio Mystery Theater", though, was one where the inspector is asked if the case would never be solved, and he (Fred Gwynne) answered, "Why not? It happens all the time."
  8:32pm Robert:

Noir is where the ink runs all over the pages, right?

Avatar 8:49pm Snortley:

An elder cousin of mine inherited a town house in Charleston, so he decided to move there from NYC. Living there inspired him to write a steamy novel about 19th century Charlestonians, based on real citizens of the day. After a lifetime barely making a living as a writer, the novel hit number one on the NY Times bestseller list. Sequels followed and he was set for life.
