Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Thanks to Fabio for sitting in with me on this show, and to the callers for calling in. I wasa bit unprepared, so I just had to bring in some halfbaked segments and some flea market finds and see what we could come up with. I had an entire story ready to go but, it wasn't really ready to go. I think I left the cassette at the station so, that story is gooooone forever. I don't want to think about the work lost there. Anyway ... sorry for the abbreviated episodic notes. Trying to catch up. Always remember.

I imagine there wouldn't be any "natural" lakes (water from retreated glaciers) in Iowa, except maybe towards the MN border.

Avatar 6:16pm dale:

caller, what's your shoe size?
  6:17pm clay fan:

Great question Fabio asked! What is everyone's gateway show into WFMU? Most people would probably say Sharpling, I'm sure. . .
Avatar 6:17pm Cecile:

toto did Africa.
Avatar 6:17pm dale:

rose of cimarron is a poppy confection - hate the 70's fadeout though...

Toto did "Africa".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm steve:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm steve:

i believe Fabio and Ed Shepp were my gateways in the early-mid 2000s. i still miss Ed Shepp, he was great

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Matt from Springfield:

Irwin and Brian Turner were my gateways, in Apr 2009.
  6:21pm clay fan:

Which one is Ed Shepp? I'll look it up on the archives. . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm steve:

Ed Shepp Radio Experiment - i havent listened in years but i think it wouldn't be unreasonable to describe it as Too Much Information on acid... narrated psychedelic hour of history, current events and culture
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm davex:

Love the radio style!
Avatar 6:25pm Night Al:

I liked 2 songs from Poco ... Heart Of The Night and Crazy Love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Matt from Springfield:

Like diseases, today's Disc Jockeys are more communicative than ever! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Matt from Springfield:

Pahk Slope!
Avatar 6:26pm northguineahills:

I believe it was either the Wire or Magnet that mentioned WFMU when I lived in FL in '97. I used to go through the playlists and marvel at what was being played. Once the stream was ok enough (usually at work, while I was graduating college, when no one else was at the office, I would listen late at night, since my bandwidth at home couldn't handle the stream in '98. I believe it was it was Monica's show was the first I listened to live.
Avatar 6:27pm glenn:

i first heard about wfmu from the yo la tengo website.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm steve:

a friend of mine in Park Slope has been finding surprisingly intense records at stoop sales
Avatar 6:27pm dale:

didn't richie furay write muskrat love, making the toni and tennille tie-in earlier complete?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Matt from Springfield:

@dale: Willis Alan Ramsey, wrote "Muskrat Candlelight" as a country novelty. Popularized by band America, made a "hit" by C&T.
Avatar 6:29pm northguineahills:

Outside Flatbush Ave, I wasn't able to pick up WFMU in Brooklyn until a few years ago.
Avatar 6:30pm dale:

wrong - willis alan ramsey
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Matt from Springfield:

Yes! That was on the Mike Douglas Show in '71 or so. John and Yoko really did that! It was a "failure" in the sense of a Ken & Andy failure! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm whiteslice:

that's the first time I've heard Clay Pigeon exasperated by a phone call
  6:31pm clay fan:

Say, Clay? Where did you pick up the southern accent?
Avatar 6:31pm dale:

matt on the ball - me on the rebound. think billy mumy wrote with poco.
  6:32pm Extrovert:

Love and peace to all mankind. Too many people? Time to move out of Brooklyn. Alot of open space out there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Matt from Springfield:

Stag Night after the Dusty Show!!! :)
Avatar 6:32pm northguineahills:

St Petersburg?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Matt from Springfield:

Avatar 6:33pm dale:

lived in windsor terrace for 14 years. was nice when i was a young 'un, but no more. area around the old armory was extremely sketchy in the 80's

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Mutant:

Clay and Fabio in 50 years
Avatar 6:34pm dale:

no matt - had to ggogle with my noodle as professor dumdum would say.
Avatar 6:35pm dale:

mutant - 50?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm steve:

haha Mutant
  6:35pm clay fan:

@northguineahills - isn't it strange that there is a place with that name in Florida? Makes me think of colder place. Anyone know the reason behind St. Pete, Florida?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm fleep:

Arriving halfway through = refreshing lack of context. Like drifting into a country store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Mutant:

I'm being generous
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Matt from Springfield:

Hi fleep! To put it simply, what Mutant and steve said! Only in a country store!
Avatar 6:38pm kat330:

Clay, this improv is brilliant! Just a drive by to say that -- eating dinner here. Very creative!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm fleep:

[drifts back to the soda cooler, picks out a Hires Root Beer, commences to examine the canned goods]
  6:39pm clay fan:

Clay - you need to put effects behind this! Make it Psychedelic Country Store
Avatar 6:39pm northguineahills:

One of the founders of St Petersburg, FL, spent time when he was young in St Petersburg, Russia. A coin was flipped, and St Petersburg won.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm steve:

Clay, any skit you do with the dueling Southern gentlemen is gold! i still remember laughing out loud at the one where they keep using the expression "tan your hide" for a long time and somehow move on to discussing a country singer named Tanya Hide
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Matt from Springfield:

WHAT could be more important than 3 Musketeers bars?!? Screw the roads, and pass the Snickers!

Hey kat! Great "conversations" as always here!
Avatar 6:40pm Pine:

Great show tonight
Avatar 6:41pm dale:

fleep - when a kid we used to ride our bikes to daly's store in smith mills ny for a popsicle and to use the air pump. they sold jeans and boots and canned goods and big chief writing tablets and tractor parts. gone the way of the dodo
Avatar 6:42pm Night Al:

@ clayfan - Peter Demens, a Russian aristocrat from St. Petersburg, extended his Orange Belt Railway to John Williams' property. Legend has it that the two men flipped a coin to see who would name the new town. Demens won and named the new city after his hometown; Williams, as a consolation, name the first hotel in St. Petersburg, "The Detroit", after his birthplace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Matt from Springfield:

"It's The Coked-Out Prog Show on WFMU! with Ross McScotsman and Fabiano Elusivo!"
  6:43pm clay fan 2:

great show clay. hate to see the hourr end
Avatar 6:44pm northguineahills:

My Florida history is still a little hazy... I still have Florida pictorial history book somewhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm fleep:

3 Musketeers too fluffy, very rapid consumption rate. Charleston Chew for longer candy satisfaction. And Bonomos Turkish Taffy. All day tooth decay.
Avatar 6:45pm glenn:

right wing corruption, that's what's happening in ottawa right now
  6:45pm clay fan:

I wish I could claim the Coked Out Prog Show as my gateway show to FMU
Avatar 6:46pm glenn:

hey zaphod's! clay, i dated eugene's sister in law for a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm steve:

the Godspeed thing was in the NYTimes
Avatar 6:46pm Night Al:

Sting's new album is out, The Last Ship. I liked the song he did on the Today Show a couple days ago. An Irish reel style diddy. The song's reflect his hometown, Newcastle I believe.
Avatar 6:47pm Night Al:

I was in Manhattan 3 days and took the ferry to Staten Island...sheesh.
Avatar 6:47pm dale:

staten island ferry crashes and crushes people. verrazano toll is like 25 bucks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Matt from Springfield:

Future listeners will be introduced through the Coked-Out Prog Show, we hope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm steve:

Coked-Out Prog Show, thats a classy name
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Matt from Springfield:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Matt from Springfield:

@fleep: Doesn't seem like it..fortunately there's no format police on WFMU!

TUGBOAT RICHIE!
Avatar 6:54pm Night Al:

Maybe Tugboat can take you over to Staten Island.
Avatar 6:56pm dale:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm steve:
