on time for a change- let's rock. Coe! DK!
Avatar 12:07pm Cecile:

Avatar 12:08pm Cecile:

OK, I can ask the cinderblock question today.
Michael and Drew, which big 4 thrash band do you want to hit with a cinder block?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm chris:

Back from Italia and tuned in. Hello! Buon giorno! \m/
Avatar 12:10pm Cecile:

Normal questions:
Which band does Michael regret not having signed?
Which artist would he hang out with as a friend?
How hard did he laugh during chunks of "Some Kind of Monster?"
Avatar 12:12pm Cheri Pi:

Do they worship Donnie Vie's talent? Give some examples how.
Avatar 12:14pm Cecile:

I'm trying to change careers and be an artist in my 50s as well. Any advice?
Avatar 12:15pm Luna:

Orale. Greetings everyone!
Avatar 12:16pm Cecile:

Do you think the energy of early punk drew inspiration from various liberation movements (gay, women, etc.), or was it just a conservative kneejerk reaction? Or a little of both?
Avatar 12:17pm Cecile:

I was gonna ask you to play Free Fall!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm efd:

"Midnight Vulture" might just be the best song ever (at the moment, at least).
Avatar 12:18pm Cecile:

Do you think heavy music is an intrisically masculine artform in both the good and bad sense of the word?
Avatar 12:20pm Cecile:

efd, that honor would go to Meriola Blues, I think.
Avatar 12:22pm Cecile:

Drew, what inspired you to make this movie? How much of it have you shot?
Avatar 12:22pm KP:

Who, Who ... Who, Who is this>
Avatar 12:23pm Cecile:

Free Fall, their new album is banging.
Avatar 12:24pm KP:

Free Fall, who sounds like Who, contains members of the Soundtrack of Our Lives, who sounded exactly like the Who.
Avatar 12:26pm Cecile:

they slipped in some Stones, though.
Avatar 12:26pm Cheri Pi:

What everyone said about Free Fall
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm coe:

@cheri yeah I'm actually chained to my desk today well for a little while any way :)
Avatar 12:28pm Cheri Pi:

I'm chained to my desk too, through these earbuds administering rock to me like an IV drip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Rich in Washington:

I still get all verklempt when I think that Lux is no longer on this plane of existence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm coe:

@cecile I actually find it interesting that when you can find women at least in the vocal area who are willing to venture into the heavy music area they can actually sometimes bring an entire level of aggression that many male performers can not. I'm not really sure what it is maybe it is purely the science of the style of music mixed with a vocal range that many men can not attain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm coe:

I love happy accidents.
Avatar 12:37pm Cheri Pi:

preparing my response now then.
Avatar 12:38pm Cecile:

also, you cannot discount the "shock value". It shouldn't be surprising by now, but it still is.
Avatar 12:39pm Sean D. Daily:

Arrr, it be Talk Like A Pirate Day, ye scurvy sea dogs! Play some pirate metal, or it's Davy Jones' Locker for ye!
Avatar 12:40pm Cecile:

you could play some Pirates, matey. They put out some scorching albums.
Avatar 12:42pm Luna:

And, speaking of lovely female vocalists...
Avatar 12:42pm Cecile:

She has some chops there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm chris:

This Royal Thunder track is beautiful
Avatar 12:44pm Sean D. Daily:

@coe: The answer could be that women have to put up with a whole raft of problems that men don't, and screaming into a mike is a way to get some of that frustration out. That, and men are honestly effen scared of women who can do metal justice (at least I am). Put those two together...

My two cents.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Stanley:

Lash that dog to the yardarm
(Rips shirt in a clich├ęd manner)

....been waiting say this all day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm coe:

@cecile yeah it is a shame. The sad part is I think it makes many women fight a lot harder to prove how damn good they really are so it's an unfortunate driving factor mixed with a double edged sword.
Avatar 12:45pm Cecile:

yup. You know it.
Avatar 12:46pm Cecile:

awesome, Diane. She trots out some killer female lead singers for us.
Avatar 12:47pm Luna:

Yeah, cheers to that Diane!
Avatar 12:48pm Luna:

And, you know how much I love GOLD.
Avatar 12:51pm Cecile:

Yeah, coe, I kind of feel like I stalled out as a rock writer because:
1) I was as good as a good guy writer, but didn't emphasize the fact I was female.
2) I worked full-time at another job.
3) I wrote mostly about "dude" music - metal, jazz, hard rock.
4) As I was married, I was unavailable for either physical or emotional affairs.
5) I was over age 24 and looked like a Bernese Mountain Dog with glasses.
6) I have serious ADD, and a lot of the music scene was starting to bore the crap out of me.

I pretty much got sick of it, and I'd rather be doing art now anyway.
Avatar 12:51pm Cecile:

Avatar 12:52pm Cecile:

also, 7) I wasn't in a cool band.
Avatar 12:53pm Cecile:

I loved writing for NPR because they just didn't care about any of these things, but their daily review thing is being revamped.
Avatar 12:53pm Cecile:

Avatar 12:53pm Chris from DC:

Just in time for Batillus!
Avatar 12:54pm Luna:

Wow Cecile, what a story.
Avatar 12:54pm Sean D. Daily:

Thanks for not calling me a male chauvinist pig or a dumbass, BTW.
Avatar 12:56pm Cecile:

Some male singers scare the crap out of me. *shrugs*
Avatar 12:57pm Cecile:

Luna, the bands I wrote about were great. Some of them are still good friends. That was the part I enjoyed about it.
Avatar 12:57pm Cecile:

I also had the honor, and I mean honor, of writing about Paul Metzger and Michael Yonkers. That made everything worth it.
Avatar 12:59pm Cecile:

and to be honest, maybe three or four of the people who were writing at the same time I was are still writing about music and making a go of it.
Avatar 12:59pm Cecile:

It's hard for everyone. It's just less hard for some people.
Avatar 1:01pm Cecile:

how exciting!!!
Avatar 1:05pm Cecile:

you answered it great!
  1:10pm Dean:

Heard Metallica at the Whisky, Sunset Strip. Had never heard of them. They were opening for somebody... Had the same response as Michael. They were the hardest working teenage (so I thought) rockers I'd heard in a long time...and this was post-punk scene L.A., which was beautiful and brutal.
Avatar 1:10pm Cecile:

Dean, awesome.

And Metallica can still bring it live.
Avatar 1:14pm Cecile:

  1:19pm Dean:

Well, whaddya know? This was very likely the show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffR4fvBdLyY
Yes, Saxon. They opened for Saxon, who weren't half bad, either!
Avatar 1:19pm Cecile:

Brave Words for Bloody Knuckles?
Avatar 1:21pm Luna:

REO Speedealer
Avatar 1:29pm Cecile:

so no cinder block for Metallica or Slayer.
Avatar 1:30pm Cecile:

would it be egadeth-may?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Andrew Waterloo:

Oh to be 14 and perched in front of the Pepsi Power Hour again
Avatar 1:40pm Cecile:

Avatar 1:41pm Cecile:

bang the head that doesn't bang!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Coe:

I think we all know my feelings about that is DM should be beaten with LU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm coe:

@Cecile you know you always could throw a band together still.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm coe:

DK what is the working title. I know you can't say it on the air :) ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm coe:

Never mind LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm coe:

Avatar 1:56pm Cecile:

hahaha coe.
Nah, I think the whole band train has sailed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm coe:

Oh this I want to hear. Didn't you have to go out and find a drummer too right before the show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm common:

love flowers of romance...is this when they didn't play?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm coe:

Vito The Butcher!!!!!!
  2:16pm Dean:

Oh, there was security, LAPD, to be precise, in 1979: http://punkturns30.blogspot.com/2008/03/on-this-day-in-1979-elks-lodge-riot-in.html
Gotta love the cops.
Avatar 2:17pm joshS:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm efd:

I spent a lot of nights in the old Ritz during my NYU days.
  2:21pm Bill:

Ginger Baker on Album, speakin a drummers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm coe:

If people could actually listen to the American Psycho and Famous Monster albums without prejudiced they would see how amazing of a performer Graves was. Almost all of my favorite songs from those albums were written by Graves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm coe:

Newsted worked with Speedealer too. May have even played with them for a little. Love this band.
Avatar 2:29pm PKNY:

Avatar 2:29pm Cecile:

Avatar 2:30pm Luna:

Love Speedealer too. Always a fun live band.
Avatar 2:30pm Luna:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm coe:

@Luna have not had the pleasure to see them.
Avatar 2:33pm Chris from DC:

What ttthhheeyyy said.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm coe:

Is there any of those bands that if they came back around today you think they would hit.
Avatar 2:36pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

sorry i'm late, boss.
Insert long string of enthusiastic repeated letters here. I'll sign it.
Avatar 2:38pm Cecile:

Thanks all three of you for a great show!
  2:41pm janimpala:

thanks you all for a great show, made my afternoon. See you at Flag tonight?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm coe:

My wife actually used to be on the same roller derby team with the guitar player from Generations Kills wife.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm coe:

Killer show guys
Avatar 2:43pm Cecile:

aw, cool, Dukes was the singer on Shovel-Headed Kill Machine. I love that album.
Avatar 2:51pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Shovel-headed kill machine...... I may need one of those for a, uh, .... "project" coming up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Almost got me to cheer for Voivod there (Vreid). Lucky I double-checked the artist.
Avatar 2:56pm Diane Kamikaze:

Aak! Think I missed Voivod this week, APOLOGIES!!! xo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Ken From Hyde Park:

No problem...just play two next week.
Avatar 3:01pm Luna:
