Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Scott Williams:

aw heck, thanks buds! I got a new toy, you might notice
  3:50pm Ashok:

Thanks for This Heat--blistering--and your Summer of Institutionalization is a gift to us all. You have taken this song to a special, soulless place that gives Derrick May gas. Keep it up!
Avatar 3:56pm steve:

that was the best version of Institutionalized yet!
Avatar 4:01pm Chris from DC:

Saw Richard Youngs last week. Great set. Looking forward to that tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Carmichael:

Hiya Scottie and FMU denizens. I think I drank 8 or 10 Dirty Beaches last night.
Avatar 4:05pm Cecile:

Lilah, you did awesome.

Hello Scott!

Avatar 4:15pm northguineahills:

darn, missed institutionalized!
Avatar 4:18pm andymorphic:

this is just great....familiar yet new
Avatar 4:19pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Scott Williams:

yeah, well - as I said last time they played here: "obviously, you start with Suicide". but it is just a start
Avatar 4:22pm Chris from DC:

Wow yeah, impressive.
  4:22pm adam_nspy:

Totally blown away
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm tim from champaign:

I was thinking the same thing, Cecile. I'm DJing a friend's wedding next month and he really wants me to play Frankie Teardrop. I think I might just play the first few bars then mix in a Donna Summer track.
  4:23pm adam_nspy:

Implog shiz!!!!
Avatar 4:23pm Cheri Pi:

suicidally impressed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm tim from champaign:

This is a really good set. Thanks Scott.
Avatar 4:24pm Cecile:

Oh, sure it is Scott.
I mean, that's a compliment from me that it evokes such a great song in my head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Scott Williams:

Totally, Cecile! Whoah, Tim - are you serious?? I mean, your friend...? haha, he really wants that???
Avatar 4:26pm Cecile:

Tim, you have to do the tough love thing. No Frankie Teardrop at a wedding.
Avatar 4:27pm Cecile:

It's an episode of Snapped waiting to happen.
Avatar 4:28pm steve:

wow tim, thats pretty demented. unless every person at the wedding has a career in the arts, in which case its slightly less so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm tim from champaign:

Scott - yes! I've tried to talk him out of it. I think I'm going to bring the Suicide record just for show and hopefully as the night progresses he'll be too busy to notice it didn't get played. Nothing pisses off the "squares" faster than Suicide.
Avatar 4:30pm Cecile:

I'm not square, or at least I hope I'm not, and that is a way dodgy musical choice.
Avatar 4:31pm Cheri Pi:

Tim, save the Teardrop for the last hour, when all the guests are off their knockers drunk-they won't know what hit em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Scott Williams:

oh, you could play "Johnny" or "Cheri", maybe even "Girl" -- but, I mean.... Frankie slaughters his wife & kid!! goes way beyond scaring the squares
Avatar 4:32pm Cecile:

Save it for when you have to clear our the hall.
Avatar 4:32pm Cecile:

Exactly, Scott!
Avatar 4:32pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

ah, the music of our lives...
Avatar 4:32pm Cecile:

How about Dream Baby Dream?
Avatar 4:33pm steve:

Keep Your Dreams, Dream Baby Dream...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Lewis:

Franks's Wild Years?
Avatar 4:34pm Cheri Pi:

Exactly, a floor cleearer so the caterers and everyone can get outta there at a decent hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Scott Williams:

OK Tim, just b/c you asked so nicely - next set, we're gonna hear Yura Yura Teikoku's cover of Frankie Teardrop - any of y'all know it?? real good stuff.
Avatar 4:36pm Cecile:

hell, I'd just blast Halber Mensch at hellish volumens and be done with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm tim from champaign:

I know! It's a terrible story to play at a wedding. There's no way I would play the whole thing. Like I said, I would have snuck in a few bars then switched out real quick. My friend mainly wants 70s funk, r'n'b and new wave so it's not going to be a total bloodbath. I may have to take Cecile's "tough love" approach.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm tim from champaign:

P.S. - Ryan, if you're reading this, sorry dude, no Frankie Teardrop.
  4:39pm Lulu:

this is a very nice song
Avatar 4:39pm Chris from DC:

Love those mellotrons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Carmichael:

You need some new friends, Tim.
Avatar 4:39pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

How about Motörhead's "the chase is better than the catch" .... any better for a wedding event? no?
Avatar 4:40pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Give me all mellotrons.
Thanks in advance,
Avatar 4:41pm Cecile:

Love me like a reptile is a heartwarming song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Carmichael:

Wikipedia quotes FMU: "The track has become a recurring point of discussion on The Best Show on WFMU with Tom Scharpling where host Tom tells callers to try and listen to the entire song on headphones in complete darkness. This is known as the "Frankie Teardrop Challenge".
  4:42pm Lulu:

idk what a mellotron is.. :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Lewis:

@Carmichael - I read that and it just seemed normal... yikes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm George of Troy:

So is he playing an actual Mellotron, or some sort of emulation? Sounds lo-fi enough to be the real deal.
Avatar 4:45pm Cheri Pi:

I'm having second thoughts about remaining unchained, I'd get married in order to have Tim dj and play FT for my unsuspecting groom and family with ghostly lighting design which I'd blow my budget on.
Avatar 4:46pm Whosondephone:

Avatar 4:47pm Cecile:

oh, you lie.
Avatar 4:47pm Chris from DC:

GoT, I was wondering too. Lulu it's that keyboard on "Love Is The Devil" I think it was that sounds a bit like strings.
Avatar 4:47pm Cecile:

Whose, ITA.

They should put this out as a rekkid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Scott Williams:

it's a Mellotron emulation - it does a really good job
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm DCE:

gotta get gotta get!
Avatar 4:49pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

last time i went a-hunting, couldn't find a Mellotron emu for iPhone that had the choir sound, which is crucial.
Avatar 4:49pm Cheri Pi:

Oh snap!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm tim from champaign:

This is dang good listening.
Avatar 4:50pm steve:

Lulu - very old synth which runs a tape head over strips of pitched tape recordings to make sound when you press a key
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Scott Williams:

RTD, this one's a rack piece of gear w/ midi interface
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Dominick:

Just great!
Avatar 4:51pm steve:

actually, maybe it technically isnt a synth, but a synth precursor
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm DCE:

RTD can't have interface...he'll have innaface instead
Avatar 4:52pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Yeh, Scott, kinda figured. But sounds great. This whole thing has been mighty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Carmichael:

Mellotrons are notorious for going out of tune and staying there. The slightest change in weather, transportation, or evil vibes will cause it to mock your musical abilities.
Avatar 4:53pm Cheri Pi:

Don't leave your mellotrons laying around in undecured college soundlabs either, they will be taken by this smug thief, under the cover of night.
Avatar 4:54pm Cheri Pi:

Smug thieving bastard: fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net...
Avatar 4:54pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Aye, Carm. They don't travel well. Saw a friend's band a while back with a guest who had two vintage models, what a joy...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Scott Williams:

yeah, actually the Mellotron was really a sampler - it was all pre-recorded tape loops dragged over tape heads, each loop triggered by a mechanical key. most famously heard on a ton of prog and also Stairway to Heaven flutes and Strawberry Fields intro
Avatar 4:55pm Cecile:

hahahahaha cheri.
he looks like he's in a Enuff Z'nuff cover band.
Avatar 4:56pm Cecile:

"2 Much is never Z'nuff"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Scott Williams:

haha, oooh la drude!
Avatar 4:57pm Cheri Pi:

LOL C$!!! Look how he puts his boots up on it, Julian Cope is banned for life now at Bowling Green Tech.
Avatar 4:57pm steve:

this extremely talented and enterprising fellow made his own from walkmen mysterycircuits.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm common:

enuff z'nuff! Hee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm George of Troy:

My Waldorf Q has a couple of Mellotron factory patches that are fairly respectable, but DB's sound really great!
Avatar 4:58pm Cecile:

hahahaha, cheri.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Scott Williams:

Melloman is amazing!
Avatar 4:58pm Droll:

It's the Mellotron's magical melancholy of the Lawrence Welk Orchestra. The Chamberlain (cheap American precursor to the Mellotron) couldn't touch it.

I'll bet Enuf Z'nuff used Mellotron on at least 3 songs!
Avatar 4:59pm Cheri Pi:

Enuff Z'nuff video interlude youtu.be...
Avatar 5:00pm steve:

i tried to make the poor mans mellotron earlier this year with a single walkman playing an endless loop tape tuned to middle c, and speed it up and down to match notes with MIDI notes in, but i gave up. might pick it back up eventually
Avatar 5:02pm Cheri Pi:

They do Droll, look how they exploit scantilly clad coeds, draping them shamefully across the keys.
Avatar 5:02pm Cecile:

hahahaha, great song in a dubious package.
Avatar 5:04pm Cheri Pi:

Douse the lights!
Avatar 5:05pm Chris from DC:

This is awesome.
Avatar 5:06pm Cecile:

hahahahahaha, FRANHKIE
Avatar 5:07pm Cecile:

repeat: do not let your friend play this at his wedding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm tim from champaign:

Whoa, sounds even more sinister in this language.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Carmichael:

Headphones and darkness. That's all Tom S. asks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm tim from champaign:

It's settled. NO Frankie Teardrop at the wedding. It's better to save it for drunken karaoke night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Carmichael:

Or wait until the divorce.
  5:12pm Lulu:

if there's like, an animal sacrifice at the wedding, then you could play it then
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Carmichael:

Good point, Lulu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Mike East:

a friend was just telling me about a wedding he went to last weekend where the music was a girl playing electric violin, looping it, then adding in some weird vocals into the loops. Also, there was no speaking during the ceremony itself, just symbolic gestures.
Avatar 5:15pm northguineahills:

I dj'ed Matmos's remix of Full on the Night by request at a wedding during the toast..... full on screeching noise for minutes.... it was awesome! (the groom requested it, most of the peeps weren't into it).
Avatar 5:22pm Cecile:

Mike, I'm visualizing pantomimed smooches and pelvic thrusting.
Avatar 5:22pm Cecile:

it's kind of disturbing. Maybe the couple aren't as disturbed as I am.
Avatar 5:25pm glenn:

however, country death song is PERFECTLY acceptable at a wedding.
Avatar 5:25pm Cecile:

Avatar 5:25pm glenn:

Avatar 5:28pm glenn:

speaking of clowns. news.nationalpost.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Mike East:

@Cecile - no I think it was more pouring wine into glasses, and tying their hands together with rope. The pelvic thrusting may have come later though.
Avatar 5:29pm steve:
