![]() Droll - maybe rock fans don't but many techno fans (myself included) still love that stuff... there's definitely still techno/electro djs around here (nyc) playing Front 242 and Clock DVA in good sized rooms |
![]() |
![]() debut was With Sympathy, Droll! And I saw some live stuff from back then and it was pretty great, actually. Never saw 'em cos my friend's fake ID busted our plans... Revolting Cocks on the other hand... |
![]() |
![]() I bought a "Welcome to Paradise" shirt when I saw Front 242 in 1989. It was one of the few concert shirts I could wear when I visited my parents because it said "no sex until marriage" on it. |

Steve, By good sized room you mean the living room on speakers instead the bedroom on headphones? I haven't heard anyone (besides Blumin) play Wax Trax in decades. BGZ, You said you that before -- Do ya Think I'm Sexy? Who are you in the video? |
![]() |
![]() play some industrial |
Tue. 9/3/13 10:59pm
recurring question:
where the hell does all this good music come from? | |
![]() |
![]() @Droll: I'm in some group shots. There was a whole scene with Al Jourgensen, Mike Scaccia and I stuffing dollar bills into the garter of a portly cross-dressing stripper that didn't make it into the U.S. version. Supposedly there's a longer version that aired on MTV Europe that has that scene and some other stuff that got cut. |
![]() |
![]() Droll - believe it or not, in actual small clubs with people paying, generally mixed in here and there with other less anthematic, more techno sounding stuff. the techno people have rediscovered noisy industrial. also the other day my coworker (who is early 30s) volunteered how excited he was about the new wax trax documentary and then we watched the trailer on his computer |

![]() During a visit to Chicago last year, Stephen from Chicago took me to this after-hours club that reminded me of late 80s industrial clubs. Old CRT televisions everywhere. Overactive fog machine. Minimal lighting. |
![]() |
![]() CRT TV has some virtues to it, particularly in a mostly-darkened room. Is that the same place where you met Mogwai? |
![]() |
![]() Air gtr, anyone? |
![]() |
![]() - gotta get foot action in there for wah-wah... |
![]() |
![]() Air GEEtarin!! |
![]() |
![]() @Matt: A couple of the Mogwai guys were with us. We started out at The Gingerman. The full band was there. So was author Irvine Welsh. We closed it out and then some of us went to the after-hours club. After that we went to The Weiners Circle. Stephen didn't tell us that the rude staff was part of the place's schtick. The Mogwai guys and I thought we were going to die. I think I even sent a tweet at the moment predicting our imminent doom. I said farewell and grabbed a cab after that. |

Tue. 9/3/13 11:28pm
Droll:
I lived in ChIll until '92 and am only too familiar with that scene. I remember lots of exposed concrete and brick for aesthetics and maximum acoustic loudness. I shouldn't complain, clubs today easily use 50x more wattage on their sound systems -- they make it painfully loud from anywhere in the room. |
![]() |
Tue. 9/3/13 11:32pm
Droll:
Actually, the industrial bands typically had very good sound. Loud, but never at the expense of dynamics. I remember Ministry shows with 8 guys on stage playing everything was clear... and the band was ridiculously tight. Bill Rieflin's drum sounds still punch harder than almost any electronic drum machine. |
