Avatar 3:27pm Chris from DC:

Yes, stoked to see Ensemble Economique tonight.
Avatar 3:27pm Cecile:

Hi, all. What happened to Kurt's mom?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Nice Chris ! That's a kewl track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm DCE:

Cecile, if you were referencing my early comment, that was not pointed at Kurt, but rather the track Dan was playing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Daniel Blumin:

Mr. Pyle's in DC tonight, Chris?
Avatar 3:29pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Daniel Blumin:

Kurt sans mom will be back on-air next week, Cecile!
Avatar 3:29pm Looms:

Hi I'm so late! What did I miss?
Avatar 3:30pm Chris from DC:

Yessir, along with Opale.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- kewl stuff like this
...but you can listen now while I go back to work...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm DCE:

Opale...?I believe they just played in CLE on Wednesday--French group?
Avatar 3:33pm Chris from DC:

Yes, DCE, the same. And BCBG as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm DCE:

yeah, I was at their show, I saw BCBG but then left to go up the street for Pedestrian Deposit...I hear Opale was pretty awesome though. I think they played to maybe 10 people.
Avatar 3:35pm Droll:

I think it's uncool how they cancelled Kurt's Mom's show like that while he was out of town.
Avatar 3:35pm Chris from DC:

Jealous DCE, Pedestrian Deposit aren't hitting DC on this tour. Have wanted to see them for a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm DCE:

mothers always get their revenge, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm DCE:

it was kind of amazing to have two shows like that literally 1/2 mile apart on a Wednesday night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Daniel Blumin:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Daniel Blumin:

Opale played on Amedeo's show - check out the archive, DCE/Chris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Caryn:

Hello all!
Avatar 3:40pm northguineahills:

aiiik! missed Amp!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Caryn:

So, based on these last 2 songs, apparently it's late in the day and the coke oven is going strong.
Avatar 3:43pm Chris from DC:

Yeah, I caught that Opale set, they're great. Two shows less than a block apart tonight for me.
Avatar 3:47pm Droll:

Oh goodie! Caryn's here to translate from Scandinvianish. My limited Swedish abilities came up with "The time is very new". What's that say?
Avatar 3:47pm Whosondephone:

Sets the mood perfectly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Caryn:

@Droll: heh! The literal translation would be "the clock is much now".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm common:

the clock is much now! that makes it even creepier!
Avatar 3:51pm Droll:

Ahhhh, yes. It's always beer-o'clock somewhere, especially at the coke oven!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Fleep:

Seems like an awful lot of work to make soda pop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Caryn:

@common: true. Of course, in reality it's more like "oh darn, it's getting late". Which might explain the need for the coke oven. It gets mighty nippy at night in Northern Europe.

@Fleep: of drugs, which is the other alternate reality
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Caryn:

D'oh! *or*, not *of*...
Avatar 3:56pm northguineahills:

well, my workstation is borking... what's going on o'er here.?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Carmichael:

Hiya Daniel and Blumin Onions.

Speaking of pedestrian, I got roped into seeing Peter Frampton this evening. Should actually be ok fun, but not high on my top 10 concert wants.
  4:07pm sinner:

...it's bloomin' Daniel Blumin fer chris'sakes! Bloomin' DANIEL Blumin.....
Avatar 4:08pm northguineahills:

Wait, I was at a client's office last week across the street from the new Issue Project Room and I didn't realize it? gah!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Caryn:

I wonder if "Der Zwiebelfisch" is a reference to the old comedy mag, the bar or something else?
Avatar 4:10pm Chris from DC:

Noise, then beersies. Laters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Caryn:

Or the actual fish (the common bleak) or the typographical feature? Hmm, man, the Germans love that word...
Avatar 4:11pm Looms:

my nickname as a child was "the frog" because of the way I dived into the see. Now, it's... Oh, you don't wanna know.
  4:12pm ms_a:

very late greetings, Daniel.
Avatar 4:14pm northguineahills:

46 minutes until beersies!!!!
  4:14pm GM:

lurking beneath these black brows...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Caryn:

So, I'm guessing Tanya is a white chick? Unless Belaya is her last name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm common:

@Caryn: Thanks for the info. sorry for the late reply. work sucks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm common:

almost beersies time!
Avatar 4:17pm Droll:

"Where'd you get such a hold on mwwweeeeeee?" Love the accent, I wonder if she learned the song phonetically.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Caryn:

@common: when work sucks, let WFMU be your comfort... Oh, and the prospect of beersies, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Daniel Blumin:

Thanks, Droll, fer this nugget!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm common:

@Caryn: But of course!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Daniel Blumin:

Going out to the Dancypantz Krew!
Avatar 4:20pm northguineahills:

I'm glad I worked late a lot this weeks so I can get early beersies today.
  4:21pm dc waters:

Somebody said the word was "tango" when what they actually wanted was the word "disco"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Caryn:

Over here, it's buttermilk time. Oh yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Ike:

Is it OKsies if I declaresies I'msies gettingsies tiredsies of yousies guysies addingsies "-sies" to everythingsies? :P
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Caryn:

Oh, dc, it's a dance that ends with an o. Accuracy schmaccuracy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Carmichael:

I can't find any info on S/T, other than their song appeared on Faust's Klangbad label sampler First Steps.

About 90 minutes until beersies for moi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Carmichael:

The Pogo.
  4:24pm dc waters:

O, I see.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Caryn:

@Ikesies: I think you mean "hellsies Isies unleashedsies"...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Carmichael:

Thanksies, Daniel!
Avatar 4:30pm northguineahills:

Uhmmm, apologies?
Avatar 4:33pm Cecile:

I am kind of drowsies right now. I had a plate of bi bim bop the size of my headsie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Daniel Blumin:

Looms, that's not so bad! Stay strong!
Man, I'm behind on the comments board... How does Kurt do it? Dayumn! Cecile, you lucky son of a gun!
Avatar 4:34pm Cecile:

I love Lorn.
And the band's pretty good too.
Avatar 4:36pm northguineahills:

Yummsies Cecilies!
Avatar 4:36pm Cecile:

It was pretty great. Lots of nice homemade kimchee. Its' this standard lunchtime Chinese-ish cafeteria joint, but on Friday, they bring out the Korean dishes - jop chae, kim bob, bi bim bap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Carmichael:

Cecile, aren't those the names of the Amazing Carnac's 3 children? He said it on Johnny Carson one night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Caryn:

I can get behind Cecile's adoration for both Lorns. Especially the first one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Caryn:

*furiously googling WTH bi bim bop/bap is*
Avatar 4:38pm Cecile:

hahahahahah, carm, I dunno.
But we did have a terrible Carnac impersonator (aka the staffing manager) show up at a team meeting last week. The younger folks were appalled. They were right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Carmichael:

I lived in Korea for a while, and I was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. I am a kimchi fanatic to this day, as well as almost anything that ends with "gogi".
Avatar 4:40pm Cecile:

I think in Korea it's not really an actually dish - more like fridge leftovers on rice topped with a fried egg. Nice leftovers, for sure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Ike:

Caryn, bi bim bop can be excellent, especially if mixed up properly, and done in a stone bowl with crunchy rice bits at the bottom.
Avatar 4:41pm Cecile:

Carm, some writers call it "the meat and potatoes" cuisine of Asia. I do know a lot of people here who don't dig other countries cuisine do love Korean. Must be all the beef.
Avatar 4:41pm Cecile:

Well, no stone bowl, but fresh homemade hot sauce and kimchi.
Avatar 4:41pm northguineahills:

I spent a week in Korea in 1989. I was 13 and spent hours upon hours at the video arcade, since most games were the equivalent of 5 cents.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Caryn:

Okay, based on a quick wikipedia perusal, the "dolsot bibimbap" variety sounds the best, and also seems to coincide with Ike's one.
Avatar 4:44pm Cecile:

plastic bowl bi bim bap is pretty good too. It's hard to mess it up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Caryn:

I wonder where the closest Korean restaurant is? I'd probably have to go all the way to Helsinki for that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Carmichael:

I was there for 1979-80. Lots of fun, especially the energetic fumbling attempts at Western culture. They love to party, without all the self-loathing of other Asian cultures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Carmichael:

Caryn, there's one in Vammala. Is that any closer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Caryn:

@Carm: actually, that's about 3 hours further away than Helsinki. But it is where part of my family's from. WTH, there's a Korean restaurant there? It's in the middle of nowhere!
Avatar 4:49pm Cecile:

hey, there's a Jamaican restaurant in the middle of the woods in northern MN. The cook is married to a MN lady. Wonder if the same thing happened there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Carmichael:

It's called Pahaolo, on Ohjansuunkatu. Found it on Foursquare.

Man, the streets all have long names!
Avatar 4:53pm Cecile:

I have this David Sylvian album!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Caryn:

@Cecile: probably. A little googling tells be that as late as 2009/2010, there was only one Korean restaurant in the entire country. Now there seem to be about 3-4 places in Helsinki (only one is an actual Korean restaurant, though), and a couple elsewhere. All on the other side of the country, though.

@Carm: Pahaolo? Ooh, here's hoping that's an ironic name...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Carmichael:

Everyone at FMU just loves Parmegiani. I heard him on Fabio and Dan Bodah recently, and I think Bryce is a fan too. And me, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm common:

and...happy beersies everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Carmichael:

Here's a quote from Virtualtourist: "Korea House, Mariankatu 19, the only Korean restaurant in Finland." Well, not anymore.

Yikes, I didn't know pahaolo means what it means. I was thinking more like "guilty pleasure".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Caryn:

@Carm: yeah, KH is still the only Korean restaurant in Helsinki. There are also 2 restaurants that serve Korean and other Asian foods, and one Korean coffee house, apparently.
  5:01pm CMFL:

Tasty set!! Good to hear you on the air again!
Avatar 5:02pm northguineahills:

It's Beer O'clocksies! See you all later, have a great vacation weekend everyone! (except Caryn, yo whom I wish well on her Korean [cuisine] hunt) Salud!
Avatar 5:02pm northguineahills:

Bernard Parmegiani can do no wrong!!!
Avatar 5:03pm Cecile:

Did you say 1994? That was 1984, it was ahead of its time. I think Mark Isham was on there too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Caryn:

Darn, just had the last of the buttermilk!

@ngh: I think my hunt extends to finding out the restaurants exist. We'll see when I manage to actually get to one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Cliff:

Hello to Daniel and the other commenters. Please enjoy the totally non-Communist celebration of labor this weekend.
Avatar 5:12pm Droll:

According to the sticker on the LP, Black Russian relocated to NYC, where they washed dishes for years until they got the Motown record gig. And by record, I'm referring to the one copy pressed. You're probably the first time they were ever on FM.

Indeed, this weekend is best for listening to music by fellow music worker brother and sisters.
  5:15pm Marmalade Kitty:

feel so sad / I want you! God, I'd love to go see that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Daniel Blumin:

Thanks again, Droll! Mystified deserves it!
  5:18pm Marmalade Kitty:

Cliff, isn't it time you all got communist?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Cliff:

Save your pinko propaganda for May Day, Marmalade Kitty!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Daniel Blumin:

MK, that's what everyone said and didn't get the tix! Cos it was Anyway That You Want Me! That 12" was a happy purchase fer this little Spacemen 3 fan when it came out! Made up fer not seeing S3 when they were denied visas in '89...
Avatar 5:32pm Droll:

Denied visas? Are they commies?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Daniel Blumin:

The drug references got 'em!
Avatar 5:38pm Droll:

Dope smokin' commie music workers coming to the US to steal 'merican jobs and raise our taxes?! Good riddance!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm Carmichael:

Ya, they heard they was good doctorin' and lawyerin' jobs a plenty. Them with their fancy degrees and smokin' cigarettes backwards and stuff.
