A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Vanilla Ice has gotta be a contender for one of the most knocked and mocked personalities in music of the last few decades. Are there awards for that...the Sneeries?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I'll admit (w/ shock? shame? why bother?) that V.Ice was actually a catchy bit of disposableness. My gripe would still be it leans too heavily on the Queen sample - but that's a wider issue...

Touch and Go Fanzine-the book posted an old photo from a Butthole Surfer's show on their FB that could possibly be the basis of Miley's teddy bear dance- down to the head horns. Uncanny similarity made me wonder if her choreographer was a BHS fan, or member.

Avatar 10:02am Cecile:

@Andrew Waterloo, I think a lot of us are a lot like Tom Morello when he was in Audioslave and discovered what an airhead Chris Cornell was. He said something like "You have this great voice, you'd think that you'd have something substantial you'd want to say."

...all the proper Brit doods who got Blues & R&B off records
- & Jimi comes over as a total sexual showman (& being the Greatest Guitarist of all Time as well)
- quite amusing...
Avatar 11:10am Cecile:

I always felt like Jimi was partly being a showman, and partly completely getting carried away with his music. And his music is so strong. Still, if I was there, I might have grumbled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...then people complain about Shoegazers who don't 'perform' - Rules Schmoolz...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- well - Townshend's never missed an opportunity to gush about Hendrix' performance: He says the Wh♂ were an Act - his ArtSkool installation
- but Jimi was like ballet - really expressing something w/ all means available...
- It seems clear Jimi really resented the obligation to do so later though - in his just 3&1/2 years of accelerated time...

I would like to add only that I had to look up "twerking" on Urban Dictionary. Also "ratchet culture".
Avatar 11:24am Cecile:

I agree. And I love Patti Smith, who is definitely in that mold. But as much as I love them, I really love the concept of a Bryan Ferry coming out in a suit. Or Johnny Mathis! Or just the punk energy which was sexual, but also rowdy and energetic and inclusive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Andrew Waterloo:

I'm just not surprised that someone who played something as shallow as Hannah Montanah would turn 20 and become the girl that chose clubbing and talking about sex as her way to come of age.

...it'a about these contempo. Pop Performers putting the fine point on the question of what place Performance has in relation to Music. Performance is an Art & always been part of ShowBiz - but if you came out of that Kulture of stoned people listening to 12" slabs of vinyl - you have quite different sensibilities...

- In discussing these people these days - one is always countered w/
- 'Yes - but they're a great Performer!'
- Sure - so is the elephant in the circus & the fleas - but I don't wanna *listen* to 'em all the time...

I mean, Andrew Waterloo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Ike:

Cecile, I get bored easily at concerts, but Low's live show transfixed me a couple of times, just from the music alone, no stage presence required. I actually found their live show a bit less interesting as they added electricity and grew less glacial.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Peter Buck put it really well (paraphrase): I thot w/ Dylan & all that, we'd evolved past the Las Vegas Show idea of Pop - but it's back...
Avatar 11:29am Cecile:

to each their own, Ike. I think I would have loved their 30 minutes of feedback show at a high-profile fundraiser, recently, though, if only to watch the audience.
Avatar 11:31am Cecile:

I love a good show. If/when Kylie Minogue tours again, I will be there. But then again, she has some kind of artistic sensibility and puts genuine feeling into their work.
Avatar 11:32am Cecile:

Hell, if Miley modelled herself after Kylie, that wouldn't be a terrible way to go. Acting in her 20s, getting involved with smart, interesting artistic men, working to learn the craft of making dance records, planning her own career.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& Kylie defines a kind of sexuality. There's no getting around it...
Avatar 11:34am Cecile:

hell, Miley should even talk to Cher. She flipped houses and sold them so she had the money to come back to entertainment on her own terms.
Avatar 11:35am Cecile:

And she's so charming. I saw this clip from Paris (where she has tons of fans) where she's doing a live TV bit, and her audience is EVERYONE - 8 to 80, every color. And she's talking to them onstage in French and they are dying from the joy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Kylie understands Camp.
Avatar 11:37am Cecile:

Yes, Rev. Absolutely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...not that I bother listening to her...
Avatar 11:38am Cecile:

I love her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Ike:

She's no actor, though. She was terrible on Doctor Who. Although, to be fair, it was one of the show's worst scripts in decades.
Avatar 11:42am Cecile:

True dat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- w/ all these tweeny Popsters - you get the heavy sense that every move is carefully calculated by Handlers & Corporates - which is not a Statement that interests me. I appreciate people like Madonna & Gaga can make some sort of statement (?) w/ Media Manipulation - but again, why should I *listen*??...
- The Doctor is trippy but Camp is relevant there too...
  11:43am stu:

Hei Trouble.....really? oh well, yarg ya'll
Avatar 11:44am Cecile:

I lost interest in both Madonna and Gaga after they made a second album. I don't think their persona held up for me. But obviously not for everyone else.
Avatar 11:46am Reeshard:

A terrific set today, Trouble, which accessorizes my birthday beautifully. Thank you for that. Having DJ Icepack on the airwaves this summer has been fun, too. Clearly, you are the coolest mom EVER.
Avatar 11:48am Cecile:

who gives kids homework over the summer? nuts!

trouble please tell us what that "when I was bad" hit me with a strap thing was earlier?
Avatar 11:50am pierre:

Miley Cyrus has a problem regarding the fact that her performance on two songs doesn't have either contrast and therefore lack sensibility. Plus her non stop appearance on the media doesn't show us a very balance personna, her character is only in one direction (pun not intended). It's all marketing, it's a big heatless fat marketing
Avatar 11:51am Cecile:

exactly, Pierre!
Avatar 11:53am Chris from DC:

Elodie's probably a little more my speed. This is nice.
Avatar 11:53am Trouble:

i don't remember where that line came from kingkoopa. before the bcbg set perhaps? you can go back and listen in the archives, sorry i can't be of any help here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am robyn:

i'll have to catch up on the archives. i've enjoyed reading the twerking conversation.
Avatar 11:55am Cecile:

robyn, love your avatar!

Wonderful show as always, but especially BCBG
Avatar 11:55am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Ever since we jettisoned cable, life feels much more pure. Not that I ever watched it anyway.

So far, as of 11:53EST 27aug13, I have not seen this Cyrus performance and have no idea what twerkin' means. (If it was explained in previous comments, missed it. Late to the party today) ... Ignorance is such magnificent bliss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Indeed !
- it's all a symptom of Media being taken over by Corporates w/ no Artistic Sensibilities
- sure people in the Biz have always wanted Hits & $Money
- but they had enuff sense to do so by making good stuff.
- & it's not just Music - *everything* is owned by one Corporation that's consolidated by yet a bigger Corporation - not by people who either know or care about that Product.
- Including our Government (bought & sold).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Mike East:

I heard your recommendation in the car, Trouble...I gotta get those records. Unfortunately, I also read Adrian's post, which said that I should get both vinyl AND CD copies. Was planning to get the vinyl, but apparently it lacks all of the tracks... (sigh) I'll add it to the list.
Thanks for your great show.
