There are lots of politics and perceptions, and the comments on many sites (like ESPN or team fansites) are often dominated by the brain dead. Better to have someone introduce the game to you. Go to a game, even a minor league game with someone who appreciates and can share the fine points with you.

Then watch The Natural, which uses baseball as a metaphor for life and hope in many ways. Re both Field of Dreams and The Natural, the books are far better than the very good movies.
