yes, you have to get everything at just the right angle sometimes. pin down whatever you're working on to make it super-secure, use an appropriate power soldering iron and to be on the safe side try using a heatsink.

Either one would do the job, though I've personally found that the wick is better for small things like pot legs and wire tips. The "sucker" is the best tool for larger amounts of material. Experience and personal skill should guide you.
