Evening, everyone.

Theme for Thumb.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm BDR:

This Eagles' song sucks.
Avatar 9:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I don't 'understand' Jazz...what's w/ those honking horns?...is this music, or are they just making it up?...
Avatar 9:03pm Dave Mandl:

BDR: I tried to find "Lyin' Eyes" in the FMU library, but no luck.
Swag For Life Member 9:04pm 12539:

You could have brought your own copy, Dave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm pacific standard simon:

I don't understand the noises my body makes...
Avatar 9:07pm Dave Mandl:

@12539: Proud to say I've never owned an Eagles record in any format.
Avatar 9:08pm Dave Mandl:

@RRN63: I don't think they really know how to play their instruments.
Avatar 9:09pm Dave Mandl:

@PSS: Depends on which noises you're talking about. But maybe this isn't the best place for me to ask.
Avatar 9:12pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...a woman once said to me she prefers music that isn't like people are just testing the limits of their instruments - which I thot was actually an astute comment...in its' own way...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Hi Dave and everybody.
Avatar 9:15pm Droll:

I admire the The Eagles because they did everything wrong (singing drummer, too many guitars, too country, etc.), but sold gazillions of albums. How did they get away with it? Deal with Satan on Hotel CA?
Avatar 9:15pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

Hullo fellow twin-stater Wendy!
  9:16pm trish:

Tin Hat. That was quite something. Hope there are details in the back announce. Hey Dave.
Avatar 9:16pm Dave Mandl:

Hey Wendy, droll, trish.
Avatar 9:17pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...In Lisztomania - what Wagner does to Listz, that's what the Eagles did to the Byrds! Har har...
Avatar 9:17pm Dave Mandl:

@DLBIRRN63: Well, sure, "outness" just for the sake of being "out" is kind of lame.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Hi Dave LB! I hope you're enjoying the cooler weather.
Avatar 9:25pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

On Lord!! It's merely lower 80°sF in my Apt.!!
...I may eventually be able to actually do something besides sit in my computer chair & sweat & take a cold shower...like cook & clean! It's a new lease on life & I'm very optimistic...
  9:27pm Richard from Venezuela:

Hello Dave and all the listeners.
  9:27pm Richard from Venezuela:

Hello Dave and all the listeners.
Avatar 9:33pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...'oH' Lord...
...reminds me a leettle of when Coltrane & ElvinJones would go @ it alone duet-stylee...
Avatar 9:33pm Dave Mandl:

Hey there, Richard.
Avatar 9:35pm Droll:

DM, Thanks for praising R&tL so I wouldn't have to leave the kitchen (errr, too late). They were incredibly creative using almost nothing more than tape speed and ring modulator. Elbow is Taboo is a desert-island disc. Unmatched creativity.
Avatar 9:54pm Irwin:

Michael Fennelly was in The Millennium w/Curt Boettcher, et al. (Columbia, 1968).
Avatar 9:58pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Yes, they were great. The Residents also were, once upon a time.
Avatar 9:59pm Dave Mandl:

@Irwin: Ah, thanks. I thought he was from somewhere else, but I wasn't sure. Good thing I kept my crackpot theory to myself.
Avatar 10:00pm Dave Mandl:

Speaking of Curt Boettcher, I got an email from Ruthann Friedman last week thanking me for playing her CD.
Avatar 10:01pm Dave Mandl:

Says she's been listening to FMU and is now a fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm pacific standard simon:

Makes it all worthwhile, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm pacific standard simon:

Back from cooking chili dogs for the family!
Avatar 10:03pm Droll:

I'd be a fan of any radio station that aired my music. Speaking of which, howdy Irwin!
  10:04pm TDK60:

Good ole Soft Machine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm spodiodi:

wfmu is poised to become the media mega-totem in the new tomorrow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Ike:

Irwin, Stephen Colbert copied your comment the other day. OK, so it was about NYT reports on college girls having sex, rather than NYT on the supposed comeback of vinyl, but close enough: www.colbertnation.com...
Avatar 10:13pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...you say that right when I'm Searching Futurism & RetroFuturism images for desktops wallpapers
...Peel Session was well-recorded - good drumtone...
Avatar 10:18pm Droll:

Ike, They're refining the message. I'm sure college girls having sex outsells vinyl, 8-track, and cassette, combined. It's not obvious and might take some time for NYT reporters to figure that out.
  10:25pm paraphrasables:

-The feminists made them do it.

-It was sent around on the fraternity Listserv - often times with their real names.
Avatar 10:25pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

Hey! Like the 'InnaGaddaDavida' ringtone! It was an important record for me in 1st grade!
  10:30pm TDK60:

I think 'Moon' by S.M. is more from round '71.
Avatar 10:37pm Dave Mandl:

@TDK60: What did I say, '67? That's definitely too early for the John Peel recording. Maybe more like '69-70?
  10:40pm TDK60:

Whichever year, it's a an engaging piece.
Avatar 10:40pm Droll:

DM, I won't have access to the flight data recorder until the end of the show, but you're already dangerously close to 2%. The Prog Police are parked nearby, ya know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm Wendy del Formaggio:

It's always time for Black Sabbath.
Avatar 10:43pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: OK, I'll stop. It might end up being 2.03% tonight. This is not an exact science.
Avatar 10:44pm Dave Mandl:

@TDK60: Agreed. Really great performance. That was probably their peak.
Avatar 10:44pm Dave Mandl:

@WdF: Damn right.
Avatar 10:44pm Droll:

DM, Sorry, man, they're not my rules, they're yours.
Avatar 10:45pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...⚡abbath are doing themselves really well here...
Avatar 10:47pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: You're right. What's fair is fair.
  10:47pm Bruce:

Dave ,tou brought to mind a time in highschool. My hobby was sneaking in to concerts.I was at the Hollywood Bowl for a Hendrix soundcheck.maybe 3:00pm,Soft machine had just finished their soundcheck&Vanilla Fudge was also on the bill that night.Mitch Mitchell goes over & starts playing on Carmine Appice's drums.Carmine gets furious & physically lifts & drags Miitchell away from his drums. The whole time Mitchell never acknowledges Appice. He just keeps playing even when its all air .I got thrwn out of the soundcheck, but not until after I was treated to 45min.of Hendrix playing sunshine of your love, completelly alone
Avatar 10:48pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...Bruce: - !!!
Avatar 10:49pm Dave Mandl:

@Bruce: W...T...F...? Fantastic story!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm davex in nyc:

Hi Dave, Daves and all! Just checking in from a rare (for me) location.
Avatar 10:52pm Dave Mandl:

Dave! We've been waiting for you. We're outnumbered tonight.
Avatar 10:52pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...In the Hendrix books they say the Mob got Vanilla Fudge on the bill...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm davex:

Glad to help! And strange to be able to hear the station on the air...
Avatar 10:56pm Droll:

Stars of the Lid sounds like a super-slowdown. Google is not helping find it, what is this spectral thing?
Avatar 10:57pm Droll:

Inspired by last week's Anagramamatron, I anagrammed the ID:
Aw, Freeman got us (WFMU East Orange)
fun hemp to... um... Ow! (WMFU Mount Hope)
Woof Mu lent a grin. (Online at wfmu.org)
Drunk antic colony. (In Rockland County)
Avatar 10:59pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

Woof Mu lent a grin indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm Tome:

far as Hard Rock bands tis the drummer for sure who ever filmed this showed it pretty good ! > bit.ly...
Avatar 11:03pm Droll:

. o O ( How did I miss NYX? Too much ID. Waaaaay too much ID. )

Hoorah for DB's return! I miss the beret sound!
Avatar 11:03pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

Blumin! Awlright!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm davex:

Montgomery! FMU needs a repeater somewhere in Brooklyn or Queens, as I've now noticed...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm Ken From Hyde Park:

You sound busy, Dave. At least you don't have to do maths when you enter a comment, right?
Avatar 11:10pm Dave Mandl:

@KfHP: That would push me right over the edge.
Avatar 11:11pm Dave Mandl:

I'll probably be listening to Daniel via the WFMU app in a hotel room somewhere.
Avatar 11:13pm Droll:

The most unnerving part of doing a fill-in must be knowing the regular DJ is listening.
Avatar 11:14pm Dave Mandl:

I won't be! Just kidding!
Avatar 11:15pm Dave Mandl:

It's kind of like a nanny-cam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm pacific standard simon:

Your studio is so peppered with spy cams it's like a spider's eye, Dave.
Avatar 11:17pm Droll:

Speaking of being monitored, Tull? The Prog Police have the building surrounded. Go ahead and play some UK or Hackett, it won't matter now.
Avatar 11:18pm Dave Mandl:

@PSS: Wait, tell me you didn't just see me playing air drums to that Tull song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm pacific standard simon:

Tull isn't prog -- it's METAL.
Avatar 11:18pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Lalalalalalalalalalalalala, sorry I can't hear you.
Avatar 11:19pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...it's named HAL of course...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm pacific standard simon:

Far worse -- air flute!
  11:19pm trish:

I heard some kinda musical triplet in those last 3.
Avatar 11:22pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: That's where I draw the line.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Now it sounds like one of Trouble's bird recordings.
Avatar 11:23pm Dave Mandl:

@trish: You mean a triplet like three eighth notes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm pacific standard simon:

I was just out walking around my island to spy on the nesting Great Blue Herons. They're much noisier than these birds.
Avatar 11:24pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

- or a tryptych?
Avatar 11:25pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...or a tryptych of triplets?...which sounds like the gatefold to a particular Playboy...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm davex:

Hold on! I've heard that goose somewhere before!
  11:26pm trish:

As in a musical grouping consisting of 3.
Not unlike the oud, lute and pipa I heard play together late this aft.
Avatar 11:27pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...trIptych...of needless Comments...
Avatar 11:28pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

trish: those three instruments @ once? Kewl.
Avatar 11:29pm Droll:

...and now math-rock talk! Truly shameless, Dave. They'll probably go through your archives to edit out all the Gentle Giant.
Avatar 11:30pm D in Miami:

These birds are making me sleepy.
Avatar 11:31pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...more crazy FreeJazz...is there no limit?...
  11:32pm trish:

Not time in triptychs, is there?
And yep. All three in an ensemble.
  11:35pm trish:

'Lute Legends Ensemble'.
Beautiful instruments.
Avatar 11:38pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

- yeah seriously - hell of a field recording...
Avatar 11:49pm Droll:

Trish, An ensemble of three musicians is a "trio".

The drummer in Soft Circle is a pretty hard hitter. Any info on that act?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm pacific standard simon:

Next you'll be telling me a quartet doesn't beat a trio!
  11:54pm trish:

@Droll Maybe they're leaving things open for additions?
A bandola, maybe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm davex:

A quartet beats a flush, that much I know...
Avatar 11:56pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:

...the triplets had me pretty flushed awlready...
Avatar 11:57pm steve:

Droll - the drummer, Hisham Baroocha, is the only continuous member of SS. he used to be the drummer in Black Dice, one of my all time faves
Avatar 11:57pm Droll:

Good things come in threes.

DM, Have a good trip, we'll see you when you get back.
Swag For Life Member 11:58pm 12539:

Thanks Dave, enjoy your time off.
Avatar 11:58pm Dave L.B. is RRN63:
