You see a blanket on the ground. It's your favorite color, smooth and soft. You can sit on it, or lie on it. It's a flying blanket, and you are the pilot. You are in control. You can fly anywhere you wish, just by thinking about it. You are the pilot.

Am I the only one who thinks Forever Changes is one of the most overrated albums of all time?
Avatar    Mon. 6/17/13 9:52pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

HA! There was quite the exchange recently about that very topic, PB, between several of the EST time-zone daytime comment-board regulars...
Avatar Mon. 6/17/13 9:53pm Dan Bodah:

@PB, you may not be the only one, but all of you are wrong.
  Mon. 6/17/13 9:53pm PB:

Rev. - I take it it was a lively debate.
Avatar Mon. 6/17/13 9:54pm Dan Bodah:

Although I do think Alone Again Or is the one of the least brilliant songs on an album that has some songs that routinely tear out my guts and decorate my thoughts with pages torn from books of French surrealist theory.
Avatar    Mon. 6/17/13 9:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- I love the thing myself
- but once a List is drawn up - such as 'BestAlbumsEver'
- it immediately becomes about the NegativeSpace of what is left off the List! That is a primary purpose of such a List...
- Time was 'ForeverChanges' was the great 60s album that wasn't overplayed yet...
  Mon. 6/17/13 9:57pm PB:

I never got Forever Changes, but then again the only Beefheart album I ever got was Safe as Milk (routinely referred to as his most "accessible").
Avatar    Mon. 6/17/13 10:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- well - it's got Songwriting, great rich but balanced Production, Variety, flow as an Album suite, Depth...
  Mon. 6/17/13 10:01pm Frisco Squid:

I'm a big fan of Big Blood myself. And I think Forever Changes still holds up pretty well. But I concur with PB in that Safe as Milk was the only Beefheart album I really got into. I kinda had to force myself to listen to all the others. The good tracks really do grow on you, tho.
Avatar    Mon. 6/17/13 10:02pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I've said it before.
BIG BLOOD CAN DO NO WRONG.
...and I'll say it again.
.......any minute now, surely...

I like this Trout mask cover...and "My Little Red Book" is my fave Love tune!
Mon. 6/17/13 10:05pm Richard from Venezuela:

Sounds like Brian Warner's voice.
Avatar    Mon. 6/17/13 10:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Safe As Milk' is like Smart GaragePsych - love it
- but 'TroutMask' is unique Art
...some people say they don't 'get' Jazz or Picasso...
- taste is entirely individual, of course...
- I quite like Love's 1st album too; every year in the 60s was a different paradigm...

Or Sgt. Peppers.
Avatar    Mon. 6/17/13 10:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Sgt.Pepper shows that an album can be both OverRated *&* UnderRated - just plain misunderstood.
- It's great PsychPop. Oh yes.
- Does it have enuff Rockin' Rhythm? Maybe not.
- Is it better than Revolver? I would not say so.
- Is it OverProduced? I've heard it gazillions over decades, & it bears listening - I'd say that's good production...

Avatar Mon. 6/17/13 10:39pm Dan Bodah:

@screeny, really? Details?
  Mon. 6/17/13 10:41pm PB:

Sgt. Pepper's certainly has its moments (A Day in the Life, Good Morning, Good Morning) although they are few and far between, but it also has a lot of crap (Fixing a Hole, LSD, For the Benefit of Mr. Kite, She's Leaving Home - ugh!, When I'm Sixty Four - double ugh!!). My least favorite Beatles album by far, Rubber Soul probably being my personal favorite.
Avatar Mon. 6/17/13 10:42pm screeny:

Yeah - suicide, about 10 years ago. It happened a few years after the Iron Maiden stuff blew up on the internet.

That is a sad story, as if being an outsider wasn't tragic enough... Nowadays it's almost impossible to find a new Anton in the sea of uninspired and mumbling "Me Singing..." videos.

weee! The Om track that got me started on those cats.
Avatar Mon. 6/17/13 10:53pm Dan Bodah:

@Droll - amen
Avatar    Mon. 6/17/13 10:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- honestly, I can't bring myself to call *any* Beatles 'crap' - not even #9 or Maxwell's Hammer - I'm good w/ all of it. I understand the argument that Production overtook Songwriting on Pepper, & that RubberSoul was maybe the maturity of the PopWriting & a great moment. I certainly love FolkRock myself. I put their Peak @ Revolver. Some hold that the WhiteAlbum is underrated (the 2009 Remastering clears sonic murk!) - & others like AbbeyRoad - altho' I'm w/ John that *that's* the one that's Style over Substance ('those songs on Side2 had no connection') - but I like it all actually...

- a few people who've become Internet Memes have had it rough...like Warhol's Superstars...*maybe*...

Avatar    Mon. 6/17/13 11:15pm Droll:

RRN, I noticed you made no effort address the arguments on it's merits. You might have argued that was really good acid (just a little too strong), or carnivals are fun if you don't think clowns are creepy.

Avatar Mon. 6/17/13 11:30pm Dan Bodah:

@ottovanbqe, yes, I've definitely played the Doors before -- both forward and backward. I am actually a fan of the Doors. Not all of their stuff -- I really don't like Light My Fire or Love Me Two Times Baby and that pop shite, but the one I played there (Not to Touch the Earth), The End, Unknown Soldier, Five to One, LA Woman, etc...yeah, I love that stuff.
Avatar Mon. 6/17/13 11:33pm Dan Bodah:

@Droll, you meant Densmore, right? Or Terry Cox?
Avatar    Mon. 6/17/13 11:37pm Droll:

Densmore. I have no problem with Pentagle. Or Pentagram. Or (The) The Grateful Dead. Or The Led Zeppelin.
Only (The) The Doors. It's a cumulative effect of dozens of small annoyances all in one band, it's uncanny.
Avatar    Mon. 6/17/13 11:49pm ottovonbqe:
