I think last night's storm was categorizable as a failure
Avatar 3:16pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I definitely had a power FAILURE. That's gotta count for something.
Avatar 3:17pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I could've called it a BLACKOUT but maybe that's what I'm having now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm DCE:

you won't remember any of this tomorrow
Avatar 3:20pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

and if you believe weather maps, we're in for more (power) FAILURE this evening. If not sooner.
Avatar 3:22pm northguineahills:

Well, I'm in the right place.
Avatar 3:26pm Cheri Pi:

Zis the rekkid BT brought back from spain?
Avatar 3:28pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar 3:36pm northguineahills:

w00t! Phone interview turns into a face-to-face interview next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm DCE:

way to go ngh! you'll be employed again before you know it
Avatar 3:42pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Righteous congrats, Mr. Hills. Would the hat & wolfies mask enhance the experience of a face-to-face? Oh I daresay hellyes.
Avatar 3:42pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Maybe that's what I've been missing. Hat & maskies.
Avatar 3:44pm northguineahills:

I still have the hat.... Thanks! One interview is actually one I haven't heard from since March, whom I started the interview process in December, the other two are new. It's good timing as my unemployment ran out last week.
Avatar 3:44pm northguineahills:

Matt Mottel from Talibam!, made that hat for me a while back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm DCE:

come out to show them what ngh is all about
Avatar 3:46pm northguineahills:

Turns the volume up....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm steve:

hey everybody
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm steve:

i ditched my "audiophile" turntable last week and bought a pair of technics 1200s. this sounds a lot like my attempts at mixing so far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Carmichael:

@ngh, way to go. Is the gubmint coming back to you for that 15th round of interviews?
Avatar 3:52pm northguineahills:

I think it's about round 18 at this point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Carmichael:

I'm not missing maskies, I'm missing beersies.
  3:55pm common:

i miss beersies.
Avatar 3:56pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

god I haven't heard this one (talkover track) in thousands of years. Can't place it by name, but damn....
Avatar 4:01pm northguineahills:

sounds tasty....
Avatar 4:08pm Chris from DC:

I think the sky just fell. I may need beersies by the time this weather is done.
  4:09pm paula pc:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Carmichael:

When Clay is finished, beersie consumption shall commence.
Avatar 4:13pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

CfDC: I think it just stumbled, then clawed back to its feet & tried to look all suave about it. Still waiting for the total fall...
Avatar 4:13pm Cheri Pi:

Beersies! I feel like Winesies tonight tho-
Avatar 4:14pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

If we lose power again, it's bourbonsies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Carmichael:

@Cheri: I had MaiTaisies on Saturday night. Sunday it was almost pukesies.
Avatar 4:17pm Chris from DC:

Just hoping that's the last wave. Bourbonsies sounds good.
Avatar 4:18pm northguineahills:

....do I make a taco, or buy a taco? b/c taco time will be beersy time.
Avatar 4:18pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

In beersy time, taco makes YOU.
Avatar 4:20pm Droll:

I lost count of which iteration Alvin is on. Does anyone know how many generations of re-recording he makes? We're finally getting to the good parts!
  4:21pm nic:

Avatar 4:22pm Cheri Pi:

It's getting real now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm tim from champaign:

It's cool that the stutter near the end of the iteration remains fairly distinct with each iteration.
Avatar 4:24pm Cheri Pi:

Can't wait to see if the the Great Concern stirred up my porch furniture. If it did, then bourbansies is def on the table.
Avatar 4:25pm northguineahills:

Yeah, that one thing I love about this, it makes it easier to keep track where in the loop it is when it gets this far.
Avatar 4:25pm ottovonbqe:

I am typing a comment which I will cut and paste until the qualities of the web browser and the server processing my request have completely erased my original meaning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Parq:

Great to hear this again. I love how it sounds like one-finger keyboard music when it gets to the later stages.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm DCE:

what do you fine folks recommend as far as a bourbon that's not too high priced?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Lewis:

@Tony - which recording is this?
  4:29pm Pine Nut:

@Otto: cool--keep us posted
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Lewis:

This room is much more pleasant the the recording from ubu web...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm tim from champaign:

DCE - Eye level shelf Bourbon is Woodford Reserve. A few dollars more that Makers but very tasty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm tim from champaign:

DCE - I meant to start with "My go to..."
Avatar 4:30pm J/S:

Basil Hayden or Woodford Reserve are very nice Bourbons
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm G:

@dce: there was a recent investigation in NJ that via lab testing turned up some bars mixing food coloring and flavors into regular plain alcohol, and putting it in expensive brand bottles. *that* would be cheap :p
Avatar 4:31pm Chris from DC:

Woodford, definitely.
Avatar 4:31pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I'm a newcomer to the bourbonsies myself, still on first bottle ever. Pleasant little companion when one is weary of searching dark basements for flashlights & such.
  4:31pm rachael:

Appropriate that I'm hearing this for the first time after I watched this for the first time last night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssFfctsevIg - I know, I'm way behind the times, but that's my strength through failure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm DCE:

thanks for the tips. I'm looking for a new hobby!
  4:33pm Pine Nut:

I am as if deaf today--sound machine broken :( :( Why am I hear? You guyss!!! I will probably fade away....
Avatar 4:33pm Cheri Pi:

Woodford was my first, living so close to KY we're all bourbon snobs up here.
Avatar 4:34pm Chris from DC:

I'm no bourbon snob, but I am willing to learn.
Avatar 4:35pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I had to go with an upstart small-batch distiller near chicago for my first (Few) - gorgeous bottle, looks like it belongs on a druggist's shelf, circa 1935.
  4:37pm Jerry:

Does the bourbon affect cancer rates one way or another?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm tim from champaign:

A snort of Woodford with a single ice cube is mighty pleasant.
Avatar 4:39pm northguineahills:

It's been 18 months since I could regularly afford good bourbon, but as Cheri Pi said, Woodford is always a good first choice. I have to admit, when buying quality liquor, I go Scotch, mezcal, tequila, bourbon, and maybe some other regional speciality. a good distilled batch of white lightning is always fun if you can find some.
Avatar 4:41pm Chris from DC:

Eying the liquor store across from my office....
Avatar 4:41pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Thee Eye Ov Zardoz
Avatar 4:42pm Cheri Pi:

tfc you have the right idea. we should all have a snort tonight.
Avatar 4:44pm Droll:

[clap clap clap] Amazing sitting room music!
  4:44pm xezzy:

Great, I'm completely stupefied now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Mike East:

I don't have any bourbon, but I've got scotch. Tonight's as good as any to imbibe. Cheers, everybody.
  4:48pm xezzy:

I have tequila-flavoured beer(s), which is exact counterpart of good quality alcohol for me, cheers!
Avatar 4:49pm Cheri Pi:

  4:50pm paula pc:

HOLY COW!!!!!!!!
Avatar 4:50pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

aw sheeit. this is wonderful already.
  4:50pm common:

Cheersies! and this is great!
Avatar 4:51pm Cheri Pi:

Avatar 4:52pm northguineahills:

*goes out to buy some tequila, pours in beer*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm cklequ:

What did i just tune in to?! I'm off the clock at work, but can't leave until i hear how this turns out....
  5:00pm Shirley Z:

What, is everbody drinkin'??
  5:01pm paula pc:

when you put Ashley, Reich, Lucier, and Wishart in the same show, it is quite daunting
Avatar 5:02pm northguineahills:

Ok, tacobeer time!
  5:03pm Qft:

kids! name these guys!
  5:03pm paula pc:

and these guys are up for the challenge
  5:04pm xezzy:

@northguneahills: have a good one ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Mike East:

man, I want a tacobeer now, too. :(
Avatar 5:06pm Chris from DC:

We've been sent home, which translates to cheers!
Avatar 5:07pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

My eyes keep miscue-ing that as tobacco-beer. Or something. Or tobacco-taco-beer. In any case, this is SCIENCE GONE TOO FAR.
  5:07pm xezzy:

@Mike: I'd swap for scotch anytime.
Avatar 5:08pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

A nice smoky Islay scotch, aye. Damn you guys, I have another hour over here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm tim from champaign:

Me too. Peer pressure is making me want to join in in all this drinking. I'm going to ask the Mrs. if she wants to sit outside and drink some beer after work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Ike:

I'm not drinking. I could get away w/it since the boss is away and the office is empty, but... eh. I prefer dark chocolate. It goes well with this brilliant audio haunting.
  5:11pm xezzy:

Sorry, I'm in Poland and a) it's already appropriate b) it's always appropriate.
Avatar 5:13pm northguineahills:

In my non-gov't offices, it was pretty much expected that everyone was drinking, everyone had bottles of liquor at their desks in plain site. Gov't jobs, my boss had tell us to be quiet that he let us drink during a dept. lunch.
  5:16pm xezzy:

Ok, I know where this is going... Fabio is inducing state of bliss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Mike East:

Mine's still the Laphroaig 18 yr.
No worries, Rev...I won't be home for another 3 hours, so I'm just drinking in my mind, anyway.
Avatar 5:19pm Bryant:

Is it my imagination, or have Lou Reed and the Velvets been getting a LOT more airplay on 'FMU in the weeks since Lou's liver trouble made headlines?
  5:19pm Gail:

Your show is helping me to get over my jetlag, cheering me up no end! Thanks!
Avatar 5:22pm Cecile:

Bryant, not really. FMU's in his neighborhood.
Avatar 5:25pm Cecile:

oh, the Swans. Hours of hilarity.
Avatar 5:26pm Cecile:

  5:27pm Qft:

1/4 cask!!!!!!!!
Avatar 5:28pm Cecile:

needs a Cypress Hill cameo.
Avatar 5:31pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm tim from champaign:

David Yow once said something to the effect that there should be a Don Rickles/Michael Gira comedy record.
  5:35pm Fredericks:

Is this what they call "Power Pop"?
  5:38pm Shirley Z:

@Irwin--I shall be nibbling my dark chocolate in a dark corner (with my rabbit, Chili), brimming with self-satisfied pride and thinking of ways I could further reward myself...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Carmichael:

Hey Cecile, been looking for you! I spent last Saturday with PJ Olssen in Reno. Lots and lots of fun.
  5:42pm Fredericks:

Fabio, please, play some Roy Buchanan after this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm steve:

this rocks
Avatar 5:43pm Cecile:

that sounds great, Carm. I had the worst bronchitis/ear infection so I've been lying low.
  5:44pm bloopy:

such a good piece of psych this
Avatar 5:44pm Cecile:

I'm seeing my sister (PJ's bro's ex-middle school GF) in about two weeks...
Avatar 5:44pm Cecile:

I bet Clay can get behind Top Drawer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Ike:

I guess I could do worse than be confused with Irwin, if indeed that's what just happened. I'm glad there isn't also an Ian, Irving, or Ianto here right now, it would be incalculable incoherence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Carmichael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Matt from Springfield:

"Song of a Sinner" is great, wish I knew about Top Drawer sooner.

And now Scott Walker! Thanks Fab!
  5:47pm Fredericks:

THIS is not Roy Buchanan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Carmichael:

@Cecile: Do you have any relatives still in Houghton? He thinks he knows some families there with your last name.
Avatar 5:47pm Cecile:

so Carm, was PJ doing a gig at the "biggest little city in the world?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Carmichael:

Yes, he was singing with Alan Parsons.
Avatar 5:48pm northguineahills:

Got a cabeza burrito, since I haven't had animal protein in almost a month.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Matt from Springfield:

This was the first version of "Make It Easy On Yourself" I heard; when I later found "Iceman" Jerry Butler originally recorded this, I noticed how much the Walkers were imitating his vocal here.
Avatar 5:49pm Cecile:

Yeah, my dad and my little sister (ha, not so little). My maiden name was Thayer. There's still some of us tromping around there.

Avatar 5:49pm Cecile:

I do love me some Iceman.
Avatar 5:50pm northguineahills:

I believe they played this bed music on the simpsons when Homer imagines himself in the land of chocolate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Matt from Springfield:

We're all smilin'! Starfire, meets Starcastle! RIP Bob Thompson.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Matt from Springfield:

"Cabeza (cabeça in Portuguese) is a Spanish word meaning "head". In Mexican cuisine, it is used to describe the meat from a roasted head of a beef animal, served as taco or burrito fillings.

Typically, the whole head is placed on a steamer or grill, and customers may ask for particular parts of the head meats they favor, such as ojo (eye), oreja (ear), cachete (cheek), lengua (tongue), or labios (lips)." Thanks NGH, I did not know that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Parq:

Matt, thanks for that. Heard a local singer do that song on a tribute to Bacharach, and he sang if very close to the version we just heard. I wondered whether the Walkers' version was considered the definitive one.
Avatar 5:51pm northguineahills:

Quinnipac is in CT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Matt from Springfield:

*Quinnipiac*, is in Connecticut. Not sure about that one, sounds kinda Inuit.
Avatar 5:52pm Lonious Monk:

bonne nuit wfmu ! bonjour listeners !
Avatar 5:52pm Cecile:

how many of the replacements?
Avatar 5:53pm northguineahills:

This is tasty, ... sort of hybrid gringo/authentic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Matt from Springfield:

@Parq: Bacharach/David songs are very popular to record and release--the definitive version (sometimes even the *original* version) can be hard to find w/o a little research.
Avatar 5:54pm Cecile:

tommy and paul. hmmmm. Slim is still quite ill, and Chris Mars isn't interested. Sort of a reunion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Parq:

Matt, right. Also, the definitive version isn't always the original, e.g., "Heard It Through the Grapevine".
  5:55pm Shirley Z:

Sorry Ike! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Matt from Springfield:

Bonne nuit, Frère Lonious!

@NGH: Another culinary exploration, I'll look into cabeza around here...
@Parq: So many #1s of that, none of them like the others!
Avatar 5:56pm Cecile:

I think the Gladys Knight versions bangs.

I think it is hard with non-performing songwriters to pin down a definitive version.
  5:56pm Shirley Z:

I don't want to eat head meat.
  5:59pm Marmalade Kitty:

Let Clay turn you into a Hippie, Fabio! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Matt from Springfield:

Fabio a Russky politician, deep red background, sounds like an agitator to me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Make fun of Hippies...yes, we do.
- But Psych was excellent Gateway to Avant, Jazz, World - everything, really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Matt from Springfield:

All right, MK! :)
I've got old costume granny glasses to send Fabio if he doesn't have his!
  6:02pm Marmalade Kitty:

Right on RRN63!
  3:40am Jon:
