Like that Max Headroom pirate broadcast?
  3:11am KP:

Somebody on FMU, maybe Jesse, played the original real IBM talking computer tape upon which HAL is based.
Avatar 3:12am BadGuyZero:

"The Max Headroom broadcast signal intrusion was a television signal hijacking in Chicago, Illinois, on the evening of November 22, 1987. It is an example of what is known in the television business as broadcast signal intrusion. The intruder was successful in interrupting two television stations within three hours. Neither the hijacker nor the accomplices have ever been found or identified."

Here's a clip of it: www.youtube.com...

That's a good one. The fact that he didn't get caught makes him a hero!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15am Julie:

oh how weird..I didn't know about that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19am G:

AmEdeo has a bet with someone how long past three he can string Therese.
  3:21am KP:

Excellent max headroom story/clip. Does not ring this buzzed bell.
  3:23am KP:

Weird inflection in guy's voice at end of the real Dr. Who part.
  3:29am Chris:

The Dredd trailer song! Thanks for the show tonight!
Avatar 3:29am amEdeo:

Loves it! Good day my friends and neighbors!
Avatar 3:30am w41:

www.youtube.com... this is his first intrusion, not so interesting, but to think about it, he should've been hanged by the balls just for doing this one... I wish that guy would reveal his identity someday
  3:31am KP:

What would you need to do that?
Avatar 3:33am amEdeo:

Oh the Max Headroom guy! Those videos are great!
Avatar 3:34am BadGuyZero:

I was talking to someone within the past few months - it might have been another volunteer during the marathon - who saw the Doctor Who intrusion when it happened. They said it freaked him out then and still freaks him out when he's reminded of the incident.
  3:40am Benedict C.:

@amEdeo: First you devote a good portion of your programme to an unbridled attack on the new "Star Trek"offering, which is doing very well lat the box office despite your colleague's "anger," and now you seem to have neglected to illustrate your playlist page with a well chosen GIF as per....Oh wait. I see them now, I apologise for accusing you of neglect. But you really should not form opinions about theatrical works that you have as yet not experienced for yourself. Many people missed the original release of 2001: A Space Odyssey because they "heard it was stupid." I'm surprised that a gentleman of your discriminating taste would form such an opinion from second-hand "criticisms." But that Joe Strummer number is a sentimental old favourite of mine, and a very pleasing start to the musical (i.e. not critical) section of this morning's proceedings. Rock on!

Cumberbatch, my old rival... how long must this cat and mouse, Moriarty and Holmes, Tango and Cash, routine continue? You must know that by now I would never make it that easy on any project of yours. Only once we have concluded this ballet dance of devilish deceptions will the sandwiches be made and the Kubricks removed from the kitchen. Rock all the casbahs!
Avatar 3:49am BadGuyZero:

BLERG! The show put me on hold.
Avatar 3:50am BadGuyZero:

Oh. Hi!
  3:50am Benedict C.:

@amEdeo: I confess I'm confused. May I inquire as to who or what are "Tango" and "Cash"?
Avatar 3:53am BadGuyZero:

Walker was an Alex Cock film. Strummer also did stuff for the soundtracks to other Cox films, most notably "Sid & Nancy" and "Straight To Hell" [a film in which he also starred].

  4:12am Radio Pirate Tim:

AAAAAAAAAAArghhh! And which kind of pirate radio stories do ye be interested in, the clean ones, or the feelthy? There's a rich trove of both, y'know.
  4:15am Radio Pirate Tim:

Do yer wi-fi be switched on, mate?
Avatar 4:16am BadGuyZero:

When I was in high school there was a pirate radio station in the neighborhood run by someone who called themselves "Hard Harry." He used a Leonard Cohen song as his theme song and played a bunch of college/modern rock tunes.

This guy totally sounds like my friend Philly Bill.
Avatar 4:26am listener mark:

The old DJs from East Orange know a thing or two about shanks. They parked their cars on the lawn in front of the door so that the crackheads wouldn't bust a window to steal pocket change.
Avatar 4:26am BadGuyZero:

I want to see that documentary now.
Avatar 4:29am amEdeo:

It's on Netflix streaming, if you have access to that. I think you can probably find it on YouTube as well.
Avatar 4:29am BadGuyZero:

Ooh...it's streaming on Netflix. The movie that showed up beneath it in the search results is called "Dead Heat" and stars Treat Williams and Joe Piscopo. Vincent Price is in it too. Eighty-three minute running time. I guess I'll be live tweeting that one in the near future.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36am I X Key!:

I've had such a weird day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36am I X Key!:

I can hardly pay attn
  4:38am P-90:

@BGZ: Thanks for the heads up! I'm surprised that there was actually a Piscopo/Williams/Price flick, and I've never seen it or heard of it. Netflix doesn't have "Dead heat" on streaming I bet?
Gotta race that one to the top of my queue. The Toynbee Tiles doc is excellent, by the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39am I X Key!:

I had a weird racist experience! I'm not used to having racist things happen! But then it was all about race & was all racism! Weird! Oh no! I hadn't noticed anything about race until that weird thing happened to me today! Oh no, weird, racism!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39am I X Key!:

Just sayin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40am I X Key!:

I wanted to say, "OK glass, take a picture, post to google+, hashtag racist"
Avatar 4:43am BadGuyZero:

@P-90: It IS streaming on Netflix! That's where I saw it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43am I X Key!:

I want actual signed things from Lieutenant Uhura
  4:48am P-90:

@BGZ: Cool! I thought you meant the Toynbee doc was on Instant. I gotta see it--with that cast, that degree of obscurity, and only 83 releasable minutes, it's gotta be deliciously awful.
Avatar 4:50am listener mark:

I met Lieutenant Uhura back in 2000. She was very gracious and kind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54am I X Key!:

She's a very lovely professional person! Her grace always astounds me!
Avatar 4:55am BadGuyZero:

@P-90: Toynbee doc is streaming as well. Win-win all around!
Avatar 4:56am BadGuyZero:

Do you think Kaybee Toys has anything to do with Toynbee?
Avatar 5:04am amEdeo:

You may have just stumbled onto something real big.
Avatar 5:09am BadGuyZero:

Is there a strong chance that I'll become totally obsessed with Toynbee tiles? I was obsessed with numbers stations for a couple of years after I found out about them.
Avatar 5:12am amEdeo:

Yes, it is already happening to me and I am fairly certain I know all there really is to know about them.
Avatar 5:16am BadGuyZero:

"Timecop" was better than I expected it to be.

I'll let you know whether or not I'll be going down a rabbit hole after watching that Toynbee doc.
Avatar 5:16am amEdeo:

What are Numbers Stations?
Avatar 5:20am BadGuyZero:

Numbers stations are shortwave radio transmissions that generally contain an automated voice reading a series of numbers. They're believed to have been used during the Cold War to send messages to spies. There are several secretive online groups devoted to finding and studying them.

I got into them because I love cryptography and some of the transmissions are extremely creepy-sounding.
