Ok very weird just obtained a 45 of Cher Take Me Home a couple of hours ago
Avatar 12:35am Holly in NC:

Earlier today I was listening to Ike & Tina doing a super raunchy version of their cover of "I've Been Loving You Long" (Carnegie Hall 1971) WAY more raunchy than the Altamont version www.youtube.com...
Avatar 12:43am Droll:

CC keeps it fresh... or at least royalty free.
Avatar 12:46am Joe McG:

@Holly: Oh, man, I have that record. Tina does things with a microphone that even makes grown men embarrassed.
Avatar 12:46am Joe McG:

Hey, Joe! Cher in the air!
Avatar 12:48am Holly in NC:

@Droll - do you think Greg & Cher were inspired by the Buckingham Nicks lp cover?
Avatar 12:48am Joe McG:

@Droll: Nothing wrong with doing some recycling. CC was ahead of the curve.
Avatar 12:51am Holly in NC:

Oh, I love this Dwight Sykes lp! PPU has been killing it w weird 80s bedroom funk reissues
Avatar 12:51am Droll:

Holly, I think Greg & Cher were coked out of their minds and don't remember a thing.

JMcG, Jazzers were notorious for re-releasing the same song under a new name. Looks like "Strokin'" is 5-6 years of refinement on that riff.
Avatar 12:52am _crazyandy_______________________________:

Did Clarence Carter say "cell phone" on that last song?
Avatar 12:55am Joe McG:

@Droll: Totally a case of refinement! @crazyandy: I'm certain of it!
Swag For Life Member 1:03am Lonely Planet Boy:

Love the electric piano on Bauer's "Mastermind".
Avatar 1:06am Joe McG:

@LPB: That's my favorite track on that CD. I think it may find a new home soon, though, since there aren't enough other friends on there to keep me company.

WHOA. Giorgio Moroder?! This is heavy heavy HEAVY for '71! The visionary indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22am fleep:

Synthesizer stings just overwhelming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29am Matt from Springfield:

Pretty great song synopses! The Pre-Revolutionary Iranian Pop album seemed to have great synopses as well (all those songs were much sadder though. On par with US country of that day!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31am Matt from Springfield:

"Volume 1" -- a wonderful sound to all FMU DJs ears! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35am fleep:

And away we go
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37am Matt from Springfield:

All right fleep! You even put aside your legendary dolphin avatar to honor Single File!! That's devotion, man! :)

A bunch of 45s in a row, you know, so awaaaaaaay we go!
Avatar 1:40am Joe McG:

@fleep: Thank you for the changing of the avatar!
Avatar 1:41am Joe McG:

BTW, does anyone know of any other hit songs that never change from one chord?
Avatar 1:42am Droll:

Kiss, by Prince.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44am Matt from Springfield:

Santo & Johnny, like those guys.
Avatar 1:44am Joe McG:

@Droll: That's a good one. It has that little James Brown break in the middle, though, I think. Doesn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45am Matt from Springfield:

Harpsi-Boogie, agree on both halves of that title! This is an art form due for revival.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46am Stevel:

Only song I can think of is Meantime, by Helmet. Not exactly a hit song, and not sure it doesn't move off of the one chord.

Harpsi-Boogie is the next Macarana.
Avatar 1:47am Droll:

JMcG, It may have a transitional, but I think of it as a single-chord song. Damn close if it isn't, great song anyhow, and Tom Jones does a smokin' cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48am Matt from Springfield:

@Stevel: Complete with 12", dance and dub remix versions! ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48am fleep:

Droll the one with Art of Noise, yes
Avatar 1:49am Joe McG:

@Droll: Agree! @Stevel: Helmet! I think they should reunite and cover "Harpsi-Boogie."
  1:49am Emile:

Great show!
Avatar 1:50am Joe McG:

@Emile: Thanks! I met my WFMU Fall quotient, anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50am Matt from Springfield:

Is this one of the Hollands or Dozier singing themselves? They left Motown for the Invictus label, writing for Freda Payne and others.
Avatar 1:52am Joe McG:

@Matt: Yep, this is thems.
  1:52am Officer Pupp:

Isn't Tomorrow Never Knows just one chord?
Avatar 1:53am Joe McG:

I'm pretty sure it is, OP!
Avatar 1:53am Droll:

Is the label for this gun song ERA or NRA?
Avatar 1:54am Droll:

TNK - 1 chord for sure! Great call!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54am Matt from Springfield:

That's true Officer, they said it's all in C, all was played on guitar on the demo tape. Though ultimately that has many sounds piled on top of the underlying tambura.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54am Stevel:

Droll: Its just kinky enough to be NRA. (Slapping leather, and all.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54am Matt from Springfield:

ERA, for Equal Rights to Arms!
Avatar 1:55am Joe McG:

@Stevel: I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that. I was afraid I was a pervert.
  1:55am Emile:

Great to hear it Joe. Keep er rolling!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55am fleep:

Slap Leather could be another Clarence Carter song.
Avatar 1:57am Joe McG:

@fleep: Ha! BTW, this Vivian Reed song is the best song on tonight's show.
Avatar 2:01am Joe McG:

This Free single sounds rawer and snappier than what I usually hear on Classic Rock radio. Does anyone know if they re-recorded this later on? This version sounds different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01am Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: I starred it, anyway! :)

All - Free - Now!
Avatar 2:02am BriJet:

ahoy hoy!
Avatar 2:02am Joe McG:

It's got a super bad edit in it, too!
Swag For Life Member 2:02am Lonely Planet Boy:

This is one of my favorite songs on which to drum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02am Matt from Springfield:

I was wondering about the differences in production myself, the 45, as opposed to the album and CD might have a diff mix. But 45s generally sound rawer and snappier to me in general.
  2:03am KP:

Hi, Joe.
Avatar 2:03am Joe McG:

Hey, BriJet! Hey, KP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04am Fuzzy:

This is definitely different...came in to see if it was a demo or outtake or sumpin...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06am Matt from Springfield:

Ahoy ahoy Brijet, hi KP, hey Fuzzy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07am Matt from Springfield:

10 records in a half-hour, now those are all proper 3-minute-or-less singles!
  2:07am harveyjohn:

It's the "single."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10am Fuzzy:

Howdy Matt! And Wikipedia has a good blurb about the different mixes of "All Right Now"...
  2:12am KP:

Very Byrdsy those Tourists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12am Matt from Springfield:

Ah, thanks Fuzzy! Glad for the good reportage on different "All Right Now" mixes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13am Matt from Springfield:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14am Stevel:

Throbbing pop FTW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17am Matt from Springfield:

Alan O'Day, ha ha. Sounds like he needs you to come redeem him! ;)
Avatar 2:18am Joe McG:

@Matt: No, I don't need to. He was a very successful guy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20am Matt from Springfield:

Sounds like you just did though! At least this song :) A nice type of 10cc/Pilot/Paul Williams early 70s pop.
Avatar 2:20am Joe B:

Hi Joe, Hey KP! Hi everyone!

This is a cool song, don't know thos Alan LP. Just know his hit and the hits he wrote for others. The flip of Undercover Angel, a song called Just You, is a pretty solid tune also.
  2:20am Emile:

THIS is the best tune you played,,,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21am Matt from Springfield:

Hi Joe B! Thanks for the rec.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22am Stevel:

Man. Obviously I'm not the only one who didn't go to sleep when it was sensible.
Avatar 2:24am Joe McG:

@Stevel: Ha ha ha! "Skinny Girls" is the worst song I will play tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25am Stevel:

Skinny Girls/Make you fee gigantic! An ode to anorexia.
Avatar 2:26am Joe McG:

That song seems super obnoxious, but he's like Randy Newman in that he's always planting kickers in his songs. The kicker in that one is "skinny girls always say goodbye." In other words, they leave the dope!
  2:26am harveyjohn:

I like this
Avatar 2:27am Joe B:

Wow, Any Road could be a Big Star outtake in the Don't Lie To Me vein
  2:28am KP:

This is gooder
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29am Matt from Springfield:

Yeah! "Any Road" is a shouldbe classic! And Do The 45! That's a seal of endorsement!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29am Stevel:

I mean, these tunes are no "Rock n' Roll Heaven," but they'll do in a pinch.
Swag For Life Member 2:29am Lonely Planet Boy:

i had no idea O'day was so good. Thanks for this set. Only knew Undercover Angel. thx!
  2:34am PC:

Not sure if you're aware that "Skinny Girls" was a big hit on Dr. Demento's radio show around the time it came out... :)
Avatar 2:35am Joe McG:

@LPB: No problem! Sorry I couldn't do him more justice, but I didn't have enough time to pull something better together, alas! @PC: It SOUNDS like a song you would hear on Dr. Demento!
  2:36am KP:

Rock, rock, rock.
  2:36am harveyjohn:

Is this the LP?
  2:37am Holly in NC:

Raging river of fear, wherw have you been all my life?
Avatar 2:38am Joe McG:

@harvey john: No, no 3-D, unfortunately!
  2:40am PC:

Yeah...Dr. D played it quite often. But it never occurred to me at the time to connect it with the same guy who did "Undercover Angel." Two different universes, kinda; mainstream AM radio and Dr. Demento novelty tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40am Matt from Springfield:

Wooo! Great Emily!
  2:43am harveyjohn:

I think I saw a copy, the LP, at a record faire once. Kind'a 3D picture on the cover. Guy in space...or maybe in a...space suit or sumtin'?
Avatar 2:44am Joe McG:

@hj: Yeah, he's kind of a romantic poet captain floating in space. Major 3D collector's action on that one. I saw it once for a decent price but didn't buy 'cause it had a scratch on a track. Probably should've bought it.
  2:45am KP:

Who is Emily. That was kind of outstanding
Avatar 2:47am Joe McG:

@KP: Emily was a 16 year old girl who went to Paris, wrote a bunch of songs, recorded them with a French psych band called Dynastie Crisis, and then came home when it did nothing.
  2:48am KP:

It did something for me! v. cool
Avatar 2:48am Joe McG:

@KP: It's a very cool album. I want it for meself.
  2:49am harveyjohn:

I once bought a "questionable" redish vinyl copy of "NAZZ,NAZZ. last track on side two... (some maniac with a dremel...). The rest plays nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54am Matt from Springfield:

Aww, Joe do we have to go home (to bed)? Well it's that time of night again...thank you so much for another classic show!

Have a good night/morning/day, everyone!
Avatar 2:55am Joe McG:

Thanks, Matt! I hope you all have a great week! Thanks all for listening. See you next week. Don't forget to tune in for Primavera Festival broadcast next Saturday, which I totally forgot to talk about.
  2:56am harveyjohn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56am Matt from Springfield:

And the Primavera always rocks!!
