I was playing George Jones about 2 months ago, and my ex nearly flipped out, boy did she hate it! I guess for her, country had to be pre-1960 or Johnny Cash.

it appears that George Jones died on the same date as Hasil Adkins back in 2005.

I've kind of been waiting all week for a day like today. The very first thing I thought when i saw the headline about George last week was, wow, how's WFMU going to handle this? For reasons I could explain only at more length than I have here, there are few artists of any genre that I consider more WFMU than George Jones.

I remember as a kid we went to the county fair and Roy Clark, and fuzzy kid memory possibly George Jones there. This was in Colorado and I was 10 I think. Then when the family lived in Arizona I think we went to a George Jones show or something. That was back in the late 70s early 80s so I don't really know for sure.

George Jones songs are so good that when you have a vomit fit after too much booze and pork rinds you don't need to brush your teeth after. Just shwizzle some booze around in your mouth to rinse and keep on drinking.

Green Mountain Man Mark:

Who came up with the term proof anyway? Why don't breathalizers give you proof results from your breath, or from blood BAC? I'd say I am about 20 proof right now. Maybe 15.
Avatar 4:34pm
Parq:

GMMM, proof is double percentage, so strictly speaking, you are 30 to 40 proof.
Avatar 4:36pm
glenn:

The term originated in the 18th century, when payments to British sailors included rations of rum. To ensure that the rum had not been watered down, it was "proved" by dousing gunpowder with it and then testing to see if the gunpowder would ignite. If it did not, then the rum contained too much water and was considered to be "under proof". Gunpowder would not burn in rum that contained less than approximately 57.15% ABV. Therefore, rum that contained this percentage of alcohol was defined to have "100° (one hundred degrees) proof".
Avatar 4:36pm
Green Mountain Man Mark:

No, I did the calculation by proof. as in 80 proof is 40%. And does anyone else here think whenever you hear proof you think that it is slang and should be prooth? Like toof and tooth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
G:

@GMMM: Many moons ago, government testers would light alcohol on fire to "prove" what the alcohol level was and whether it had been watered down (would a sample of it catch fire or not?). Later, when they could measure alcohol percentage numerically, proof was graded into half-percent units of alcohol content
