Cool, I'm from the start today.
Just settle back with the ol' pipe and glass of stout.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:05pm northguineahills:

With that start to the show, I would be forgiven I tuned in to Fabio ;)
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:06pm listener james from westwood:

afternoon, matt, and all george jones fans!
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:06pm Parq:

Another classic Fiveash intro.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:07pm Matt F:

Hi y'all, it's hectic so I won't be participating in the discussion much. Please talk amongst yourselves, though!
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:07pm duke:

@Stanley I think a pack of camels and bottle of Jack Daniels would be more appropriate for today.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:07pm Doug Schulkind:

Any chance the Possum is just playing dead?
Avatar Thu. 5/2/13 2:09pm Sonny Rickles:

good one Doug!
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:09pm listener james from westwood:

he's spending a year dead for tax purposes.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:10pm Parq:

Hah. Still thinking about that Eagles track toward the end of Irwin's show yesterday, James?
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:13pm northguineahills:

I was playing George Jones about 2 months ago, and my ex nearly flipped out, boy did she hate it! I guess for her, country had to be pre-1960 or Johnny Cash.
Avatar Thu. 5/2/13 2:16pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

it appears that George Jones died on the same date as Hasil Adkins back in 2005.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:22pm pacific standard simon:

A little late to the party -- Macy's just delivered a new mattress. My musical bed!

Hi Matt. Wait, I'm from Georgia and I'm deciding to take offense as your barrel full of crackers "joke"....
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:29pm Parq:

Great to hear Herr Barron again.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:34pm still b/p:

I'm sure I'm not the first to note it woulda been a guffaw on funeral day if the undertaker undertook to make George a no-show one last time.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:35pm duke:

I will add that i have never fired a gun at Tammy Wynette either
Avatar Thu. 5/2/13 2:36pm L Ketchum Esq:

Well i DID fire a gun at Tammy Wynette. And I'd do it again!
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:38pm Parq:

I've kind of been waiting all week for a day like today. The very first thing I thought when i saw the headline about George last week was, wow, how's WFMU going to handle this? For reasons I could explain only at more length than I have here, there are few artists of any genre that I consider more WFMU than George Jones.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:43pm pacific standard simon:

My paper targets at the shooting range are all signed, 8X10 glossy photographs of Tammy.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:44pm listener james from westwood:

i only shoot at pictures of that ostrich that almost eviscerated johnny cash.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:44pm glenn:

wow. there's six hours of the possum on wfmu today.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:48pm pacific standard simon:

Just when you think you know what the next song will be...
Avatar Thu. 5/2/13 2:49pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

when I lived in Tennessee I knew a cop and he used to tell everybody to speed. He said "Go ahead and speed all you want. We can use the revenue."
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:51pm pacific standard simon:

Man, this is gonna be a sweet Thursday...
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 2:57pm Dominick:

soaking it all up - so to speak
Avatar Thu. 5/2/13 3:01pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

Looking at the playlist I see that it is entirely George Jones. What the heck is goin on? Some kind of a tribute or something? Cool.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 3:03pm pacific standard simon:

One way or the other, I'm gonna hear "Walk Through This World".
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 3:03pm glenn:

i just realized that in solidarity with my maple leafs and blue jays, i should be boycotting matt "i'm from boston" fiveash's playlist today.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 3:09pm listener james from westwood:

between this show and spazz's, it'll be the soundtrack to one helluva roadtrip.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 3:10pm Parq:

Glenn: George Jones was from Tx. Nuff said.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 3:11pm glenn:

okay. fair enough.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 3:12pm listener james from westwood:

for the next 2 hours, we're all in jonestown.
wait, that doesn't sound right.
Avatar Thu. 5/2/13 3:14pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

I remember as a kid we went to the county fair and Roy Clark, and fuzzy kid memory possibly George Jones there. This was in Colorado and I was 10 I think. Then when the family lived in Arizona I think we went to a George Jones show or something. That was back in the late 70s early 80s so I don't really know for sure.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 3:17pm listener james from westwood:

simon: i included some of the lyrics to "walk through this world" in a wedding card. in true george & tammy fashion, the couple d-i-v-o-r-c-ed 3 yrs later.

Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:21pm G:

For archive readers, many of us changed to GJ picture avatars. Those will disappear from the archive when we change back later to our usual/current avatars, but they were here during the live show... :)

Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:24pm G:

tell ya what, i'm ridin the lawnmower down there.
Avatar Thu. 5/2/13 4:24pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

George Jones songs are so good that when you have a vomit fit after too much booze and pork rinds you don't need to brush your teeth after. Just shwizzle some booze around in your mouth to rinse and keep on drinking.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:25pm glenn:

jones soda needs a george label.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:26pm listener james from westwood:

and a higher proof!
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:27pm G:

proof means i aint botherin ta drink it if ya cant prove ta me it's got enough alcohol in it ta bother with
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:29pm glenn:

A proof is a proof. What kind of a proof? It's a proof. A proof is a proof. And when you have a good proof, it's because it's proven.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:30pm G:

say it, son!
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:31pm Parq:

Dang! I had to make a phone call and I missed the opening line of "Race Is On".
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:32pm glenn:

baritone guitar is the jam.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:32pm G:

Malkovich Malkovich, Malkovich? Malkovich Malkovich!
Avatar Thu. 5/2/13 4:32pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

Who came up with the term proof anyway? Why don't breathalizers give you proof results from your breath, or from blood BAC? I'd say I am about 20 proof right now. Maybe 15.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:34pm Parq:

GMMM, proof is double percentage, so strictly speaking, you are 30 to 40 proof.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:36pm glenn:

The term originated in the 18th century, when payments to British sailors included rations of rum. To ensure that the rum had not been watered down, it was "proved" by dousing gunpowder with it and then testing to see if the gunpowder would ignite. If it did not, then the rum contained too much water and was considered to be "under proof". Gunpowder would not burn in rum that contained less than approximately 57.15% ABV. Therefore, rum that contained this percentage of alcohol was defined to have "100° (one hundred degrees) proof".
Avatar Thu. 5/2/13 4:36pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

No, I did the calculation by proof. as in 80 proof is 40%. And does anyone else here think whenever you hear proof you think that it is slang and should be prooth? Like toof and tooth.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:36pm G:

@GMMM: Many moons ago, government testers would light alcohol on fire to "prove" what the alcohol level was and whether it had been watered down (would a sample of it catch fire or not?). Later, when they could measure alcohol percentage numerically, proof was graded into half-percent units of alcohol content
Avatar Thu. 5/2/13 4:37pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

Thanks for the info know it all at Glenn dot com.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:40pm G:

what a poor situation for the wife in this song, having a husband who's chained to the booze bottle :p
Avatar Thu. 5/2/13 4:42pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

Thank you as well know it all at G dot com. Heh, Heh. I am imagining all of us in the same room drinking and listening. Would be fun if we all escalated to a bar barreling furniture and appliance throwing brawl together, online.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:48pm Uncle Michael:

I'm more the "I love you, mannnnn..." type.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:49pm still b/p:

Make friends and memories when you get into rum and gunpowder experiments in a bar.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:50pm Uncle Michael:

Oh fuck...how I love this song.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:51pm Parq:

Hah. Been waiting a whole week to hear this song on FMU. Spazz is going to be ticked that you beat him to it, you know.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:52pm still b/p:

These are lyrics to be projected large on a wall or a sheet at a party for a singalong.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:53pm G:

@still b/p: George would approve, and probably did far worse on hundreds of occasions
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:54pm glenn:

i forgot to credit wikipedia.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:54pm wikipedia:

we'll let it pass this time, buster
Avatar Thu. 5/2/13 4:55pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

when i was in the army many years ago there was a guy that drank Jim Beam and root beer and locked himself into his room and ate delivered pizza, listened to country music, especially George Jones, and the next day he would emerge and there would be holes punched into all four walls and furniture overturned. stereo over turned. But the TV would always be left alone and ok, with some john wayne cowboy movie on
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:55pm G:

wow, a role model :p
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:56pm Uncle Michael:

@GMMM: You just wrote a great song.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:57pm Parq:

GMMM, did this guy to go college on the GI Bill? Because I think he lived down the hall from me junior year.
Avatar    Thu. 5/2/13 4:58pm Uncle Michael:
