"Walk Through This World With Me" always makes me think of the wonderful Ms. Cantrell

when my grampa wasn't allowed to drive anymore back in the 60's he'd take his john deere m to the store for a big bottle of ancient age beer. no stopping the pull of lady liquor

Droll:

For many musician celebrities it's similar to lotter winners -- they're not prepared for the money (problems and privileges) and they blow it on sex and drugs and cars and soon it's all gone.
Many lottery winners go broke, many celebrities are ruined by their fame and fortune.

oops, my bad - ancient age was bourbon. i think he probably just picked up a big genny cream. it was a general store and they didn't have the hard stuff

Still having a tough time separating the man from the artist. John Lennon was a big musical influence in my life, but man, was he screwed up.

Roky Erickson!

(That's a link to Wikipedia article on Ancient Age bourbon - with a nice picture of the bottle)

Jack Kerouac. Watching him slowly succumb to alcohol was so sad.

i had a bunch of late 60's early 70s jim beam decanters i collected that were still sealed. i read that they sell/ship easier empty so we cracked them open and my wife drank it all last year - it was 100 months old in 1970, so 50 year old bourbon. she said it was the best bourbon she ever drank

can you say asshole on the radio?
Avatar 6:21pm
Green Mountain Man Mark:

HST did beat his wife, and was a real asshole to many and all, but was an artful asshole. His stories from him hanging out with the Hells Angels is hilarious and terrifying. And his time in Vietnam as a reporter.

Ken From Hyde Park:

I liked Stevie Ray Vaughn and also Johnny Cash.

Can't have this list w/o mentioning Buddy Rich can we?

And of course Phil Ochs is a sad classic story :(

William Burroughs

Syd Barrett, Nick Drake and Tim Hardin all come to mind.

they weren't damaged, they were outlaws - there's a difference
Avatar 6:28pm
Danne D:

Not music, but I can't say I'm as much of a Dennis Miller fan as I was back in, say, my college days.
  6:29pm
cavorting with nudists:

I don't give a damn about Woody Allen--for reasons that predate Soon-Yi-- but I don't know how damaged he was. Seems more like a damage-doing guy.
  6:30pm
kw:

David Foster Wallace
  6:30pm
Raj:

Townes Van Zandt. No memory of his childhood after shock treatment! But even that did not slow him down much. R.I.P.

GG Allin

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm

I think that doc is called "Who is Harry Nilsson (and why is everybody Talking about Him)?"
Worth watching.

2nd Townes VZ, he takes a cake
  6:35pm
Ralphine:

David Foster Wallace's use of footnotes and endnotes is a gimmick I can do without.

Green Mountain Man Mark:

I had a lazy moment at the store yesterday. I had pasta and meatballs for our dinner menu. I needed some Italian bread to make garlic bread slices and noticed they had both sliced and unsliced loaves. I grabbed a sliced loaf and thought to myself "this is great." I did not, however, think that this was the greatest thing, though.
  6:39pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Gary Glitter!
  6:39pm
DPCD:

Miles Davis, Kurt Cobain, etc... Too easy!
How about most of us with a strict (read extremist) religious upbringing?
I'd give anything to write as well as DF Wallace, by the way!
  6:39pm
dale:

monica - look for the movie 'DIG' re: brian jonestown vs. dandy warhols
  6:41pm

The Mountain Man needs more damage
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm
Greg from Bloomfield:

I had no idea how damaged Joe Strummer was until I read "Redemption Song", but it just made me love him more. Also, Phil Spector.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm
Greg from Bloomfield:

Oh duh! And Polanski. Good call, Chris.
  6:52pm
dale:

saw tammy at the bottom line. one of the best shows i ever saw, three feet away from her, costume changes, drag queens in the audience and good food.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Another guy for the "Too Easy" list - John "Ozzie" Osbourne. Have any ladies been mentioned yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm
Mike East:

the classic damaged woman is Silvia Plath, right?
Avatar 6:53pm
Danne D:

Jonesy to SUW to Aerial View, reasonable progression
  6:55pm
cavorting with nudists:

Don't read this on the air, Chris, but I can't listen to Irwin anymore knowing his sheer political assholery. It's rough sometimes because I used to really enjoy the Old Codger.
