Hey, you(s)

Andrew Waterloo:

good morning

ausmanx:

are you suspecting there's more than one listener out here, j? this sounds almost like arabic theremin. i bet they discovered the theremin first too
Avatar 6:10am
Jason Elbogen:

I'm open to the possibility of more than one listener. When I used to DJ on East Village Radio there sometimes were (literally) zero.
Avatar 6:11am
ausmanx:

it's the quality of the listening, not the quality. andrew and i are very attentive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12am
Sem Chumbo:

Another listener. Good morning, Jason, Andrew W and Ausmanx.
Avatar 6:20am
ausmanx:

shamisen's that really beautiful string instrument you see in so many japanese films. i've just booked a koto player to do a gig at my house in november... you should come over!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20am
JasonDBN:

Morning all.
JasonE, IIRC The Shamisen is an instrument... of some kind, a lute maybe?
Avatar 6:21am
ausmanx:

you gotta love this... duelling shamisen! www.youtube.com...
Avatar 6:37am

brenda, i assume, is accompanying herself on the joanna...

Still another listener. G'morning all.

Yapoos! First time on FMU?
Avatar 7:22am

first time in three years, looks like.

...seems maybe 8 A.M. is when more people approach their keyboards?...
Avatar 7:35am
Jason Elbogen:

they find my sensuous voice and between song chatter so intimidating that it takes about two hours to build up the courage to type, RR
Avatar 7:39am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

ausmanx: Thx for giving me an opening to vent on Politrix yesterday A.M. on UnderwaterThemePark board. Wasn't implying I wasn't interested in your opinions
- but the opposite: was interested enuff to engage
- altho' I'm sure there are limits to how much political discussion makes sense on FMU CommentsBoards...
Avatar 7:42am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

JE: I mean 8 A.M. for Programs generally - altho' I take your point...
Avatar 7:44am
ausmanx:

i find the sensuous voice and chatter quite alluring, to be honest. and djelbogen is someone not afraid to launch into the fray of controversy, though definitions of terrorism are more fraught than intolerance of Brooklyn, i guess. i can be disappointed with the reluctance of FMU listeners to comment on serious things, but i suppose i'm always up for provocation, and nowhere seems inappropriate to me. everything is political, esp music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45am

@Jason,
I've been surfing the j-pop youtubes for a while, hence my familiarity with Yapoos and Jun Togawa (and my avatar).

- I've said before: I don't know if Posting another stream address is a big faux pas here
- but if it is, I claim dibs!:

...the part after the last colon doesn't make part of the Link - so you have to Copy it I guess...

Good morning/afternoon/evening. I see I missed Yapoos and some shamisen, but these "Cambodian Guys and Gals" is nice

rybnikoff is the composer (awesome), i wonder who`s the band/arranger. the movie`s name translates "great space trip". always excited to hear russian/soviet stuff on wfmu, you guys there always pick best!

Jason, I finally found something about the Tibetan long song. Not much, but it seems to be from Kham. I've seen it referred as "Kham Lu", but I suspect it just means "song from Kham". I even got the name of that singer I saw last year: Gazom Lhamo. So I'm making progress in that quest

...it's the Stream Address for that J-Pop so maybe just put it in a Player (when can/if want)...
Avatar 8:09am

Fred--
Thanks--seems like there's lots of Gazom Lhamo videos/music online. I'm going to look into it when I get home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14am

Jason, some feature questionable arrangements, but I'm sure you're familiar with that particular pitfall. I'll be seeing Gombodorj Byambajargal again next month, I just can't wait. I'll be seeing Jandek for the first time two days before, but I just can't get properly excited about it with Byambajargal coming to town
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18am
fred:

Is that "Come On" track new? It sounds so no-wave to me, but this sound is making a comeback these days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24am
fred:

There was a Enta-Omri-ish vibe to this Hassan Abou Seoud track
Avatar 8:25am

...apparently the homepage for stream :

...I know nothing about it...

I saw a great Uyghur show this week. I hadn't expected much from it, but it was Dolan, so I learned something precious

are you suggesting that Armenians shouldn't record in Australia???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38am
northguineahills:

It was Wednesday night, just saw that Daily Show yesterday. He was hilarious!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40am
KevinfromBayRidge:

A non-contentious good day to all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40am
fred:

It makes sense though, Aussies may want to record that while in Armenia it may just not have occurred to them. So much music needs an outsider to be captured, and that's just not about trad stuff
Avatar 8:41am
ausmanx:

armenia has BRILLIANT recording studios, i'm sure. however, some discriminating armenians have chosen to relocate to our magnificent brown land and good on them for supporting the local recording industry. the australian diaspora in armenia i'm sure records in Yerevan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41am
Sem Chumbo:

The Albanian song/album title: "Don't Trust Your Neighbours" reminds me of a harrowing travel book about Albania: "The Accursed Mountains."
A well-named piece, according to the authors observations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42am
northguineahills:

During the Nagorno-Karabakh war in the 90s, many Armenians fled for lands abroad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43am
northguineahills:

Same w/ Azerbaijanis....
Avatar 8:44am
Jason Elbogen:

As a coincidence, Ausmanx: that daily show episode with Bassem Youssef also featured John Oliver going to Australia to demonstrate how completely insane some of us Yankees are about guns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45am
fred:

@NGH: fleeing war makes a lot of sense to me. Then again, I'm french, so it's no surprise
Avatar 8:45am
ausmanx:

now that does seem perverse, and a long way to come to demonstrate American gun fetish?
Avatar 8:47am
ausmanx:

ngh, i guess the Armenians have had lots of reasons to flee for many, many decades; they're probably one of the most widespread diaspora
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49am
fred:

@ausmanx: that gun thing is just puzzling to me. And either that's a great Pink Floyd cover, or the playlist isn't catching up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51am
northguineahills:

Yeah, the Turks and Soviets weren't too kind to the Armenians, to put it mildly.

I love this YLT!
Avatar 8:52am
Jason Elbogen:

Yeah, this is one of my favorite Yo La Tengo songs.
Avatar 8:54am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- the French didn't flee war in WWI - & Lafayette helped the American Revolution a lot (I got French DNA)...
- Some in the U.S. say 'gun control' means using two hands. I am not one of them. It's completely out of hand: The gun enthusiasts think the answer is everybody should be like them & be armed better than any challenger - to basically live in the Wild West. For real. That other countries exist perfectly well w/out guns is irrelevant to these sorts...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54am
fred:

Can someone please tell me why I didn't go to that YLT show? I since heard that the opening band cancelled, so they took over. (banging head on nearest wall, though it wasn't part of it, life is indeed unfair)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57am
Andrew Waterloo:

The 'gun nuts' in the US run on a bizarre mix of nihilsm and tough guyism. Where it is every solution to every problem is met with an exasperation of hopeless futility unless of course you're kicking someones ass.
  8:58am
common:

94 was painful for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58am

Great show this morning Jason; I'm glad I was able to pay more attention than usual.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59am
fred:

That was a good one Jason
