hey, that sounds like a plan
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 3:14pm Jeff:

Something went flaky with the internet connection feeding our primary streaming server. I've switched the DNS record to point people at the backup... and the change should've taken effect by now. So if your stream sounds bad, try reconnecting now.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 3:15pm WaveyDavey:

Much Better. And not a moment to soon. Here in Heaven is a treat for me in San Francisco.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 3:16pm dc pat:

yes better now

say this isn't going to be one of them Sparks specials is it?
  Thu. 4/25/13 3:17pm common:

thanks Jeff!

Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 3:24pm Carmichael:

It's those Mael boys again, eh? Better warm up the tubes on the Philco.

Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 3:31pm DCE:

little bit goes a long way
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 3:33pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Holy crap the stream is working. If I had to go without DK *and* Fabio, I was gonna hafta kill myself in the headface.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 3:36pm glenn:

would that make you headface killah?
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 3:38pm Carmichael:

The cranial zone would surely not have survived.
  Thu. 4/25/13 3:38pm frenchee:

did Fabio just say "fictional?"
  Thu. 4/25/13 3:39pm Drunken Asshole:

your internet, it be laggins
  Thu. 4/25/13 3:39pm frenchee:

ermI mean "fictTITIONAL"
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 3:43pm Carmichael:

You can temporarily revive your old 8 tracks and cassettes by carefully baking them in a convection oven at very low temp. You can then safely transfer the data to another format. I've done it several times.

Do NOT use a conventional oven.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 3:46pm BigLankyGeordie:

Bergman album is a feckin masterpiece!
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 3:46pm Looms:

great opening :)
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 3:47pm BigLankyGeordie:

Epic, love the Swedish version, I've only got the Engerlish one ;-)
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 3:50pm DCE:

Carm, are you going to start a cassette-only label called "baked tapes"?
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 3:51pm BigLankyGeordie:

Erm, what version is this in fact because orchestration is different to version I have. This one is bloody brilliant!!!!!!!
  Thu. 4/25/13 3:52pm Ralphine:

Does baking not work for reel-to-reel tapes?
  Thu. 4/25/13 3:54pm Germaine:

Hi to "Sparks fanboy", I mean, "Sparks Expert", Ken M.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 3:56pm glenn:

tape baking. www.gearslutz.com...
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 3:58pm efd:

This is fantastic, thanks for airing it today! So psyched for the show tonight.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:00pm Carmichael:

@Ralphie: In theory, though I've never tried it. A big chunk of tape on that 4" reel!
  Thu. 4/25/13 4:01pm yellowpetal233 from Anklon:

You all are blowing my mind.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:01pm Stevel:

Sparks are terrific. I'm going to revisit this on the archives more than once.
  Thu. 4/25/13 4:02pm yellowpetal233 from Anklon:

where do the Sparks reside honey?
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:04pm Carmichael:

Talent is An Asset. Remember that song from the 70s, I think. Given what I did in the 70s, that's a major accomplishment.
  Thu. 4/25/13 4:04pm Jason:

Anybody got an extra ticket to the Sparks show tonight at the Highline Ballroom?
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:07pm fearson:

#failure to tune in in time!
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:10pm braveness23:

  Thu. 4/25/13 4:16pm jfreeman:

this is awesome.. thanks Fabio!
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:18pm fearson:

yeah this is #strong
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:19pm InBrkly:

Maybe 15 years ago I was at a party and said "Sparks" at the exact moment a song came on and a random guy next to me leaned over and said "That's amazing! You recogized them in 3 notes!"

I didn't have the heart to tell him I was talking about the caffeinated malt beverage. And that is how I learned about the band :/
  Thu. 4/25/13 4:19pm robyn:

this is the music sparks have been dying to make this whole time...polka baby!
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:20pm InBrkly:

Well more like 10 years ago I guess.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:21pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

@Carm: that LP (with TALENT IS AN ASSET) was the first one I heard, was about 12 years old, was hooked immediately.
  Thu. 4/25/13 4:25pm common:

was "the serpent's egg" the only bergman film made in hollywood?
  Thu. 4/25/13 4:25pm map:

Is Wild Strawberries the best Bergman film? At least to start? (Never seen any of his movies)
  Thu. 4/25/13 4:28pm reTodd:

The foil and mush-mouth food sounds are disturbing
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:30pm robyn:

@map. it's good. seventh seal would probably also be a good one to start with. persona, through a glass darkly, the silence, are also good. smiles of a summer night is sweet and actually a comedy!
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:32pm robyn:

sawdust and tinsel is good if you like carnies (who doesn't).
  Thu. 4/25/13 4:34pm blee:

Spacey 8-Track.
Interesting show, I know nothing about Sparks.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:34pm rsj:

very danceable
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:35pm hamburger:

wow what have i missed?!
  Thu. 4/25/13 4:35pm common:

hour of the wolf is my favorite. Scary stuff!
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:37pm rsj:

is fabio listening to this? I bet he's busy talking off mic
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:38pm BigLankySmoggie:

@map Wild Strawberries is good but Summer with Monika is a cracker! ;-)
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:41pm Cecile:

Jello called Skyhooks "kind of the Australian Sparks."
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:44pm robyn:

@Cecile never heard of Skyhooks! But they seem to fit the bill. That's amazing.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:47pm Cecile:

they were loved/reviled in Australia in the 70s. But they were one of the first bands (along with Sherbet, AC/DC) to really be huge down there with original material and really embrace their Australian-ness.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:48pm steve:

wonder if they'll have a drum machine at the show tonight
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:49pm Carmichael:

You mean like Aynsley Dunbar?
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:50pm northguineahills:

Nice serendipity InBrkly!
  Thu. 4/25/13 4:51pm r i s k y:

I got angst in my pants Fab!
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:54pm glenn:

"huge down there" ummmm, cecile.....
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:56pm Cecile:

oh, ha ha. ha.
  Thu. 4/25/13 4:56pm yellowpetal233 from Anklon:

Hey, this isn't English!!!!!
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:57pm robyn:

who are the most literate pop bands/songwriters? i don't mean like dylan (bleh) but like sparks, playful, funny. sparks...momus...magnetic fields...black box recorder...
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:58pm Cecile:

I liked 10cc for that kind of thing.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 4:59pm BigLankySmoggie:

Anyone else think the musical lilt of spoken Swedish adds so much to this version? I love it.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:00pm robyn:

@Cecile never heard of them! buzzcocks of course...
  Thu. 4/25/13 5:01pm yellowpetal233 from Anklon:

@robyn--robyn hitchcock
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:01pm Cecile:

Check out their stuff from 1972-1976. After that YMMV.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:02pm Cecile:

John Cale's earlier stuff has rich, beautiful language.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:02pm glenn:

really? never heard of 10cc?
  Thu. 4/25/13 5:02pm yellowpetal233 from Anklon:

Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:04pm Cecile:

Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:04pm fearson:

Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:05pm northguineahills:

I was going to say what's the term for group hubris, but my soba is boiling over.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:06pm robyn:

@glenn i ain't kidding :) how would you describe this music...black humor...slightly pervy.
  Thu. 4/25/13 5:10pm Ralphine:

Smokey Robinson was pretty literate. How can you beat "Just like Pagliacci did, I try to keep my sadness hid"?
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:12pm robyn:

@ralphine good point.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:13pm Cecile:

Pet Shop Boys, Rufus Wainwright and Marc Almond have had their moments.
  Thu. 4/25/13 5:13pm Moon Unit:

Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:14pm efd:

If nothing else I've learned how to say "Sweden" in Swedish today, and for that I'm grateful.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:14pm robyn:

Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:15pm Cecile:

How about "moody cabaret-pop"?
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:16pm Cecile:

@efd, Sverige? I only know that because I used to collect stamps.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:17pm efd:

@Cecile Yes, and apparently pronounced "Swear-ee-yuh."
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:17pm robyn:

@cecile i like that.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:17pm efd:

I'd seen Sverige in print before, but never knew how to say it.
  Thu. 4/25/13 5:18pm Will:

PLEASE stop fading out for translation. Trying to enjoy the music
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:22pm david_:

Hi all - just tuning in. Intrigue!
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:22pm david_:

Clay will definitely want to catch the archive if he's not listening...
  Thu. 4/25/13 5:24pm yellowpetal233 from Anklon:

Come on clay, liven up the board!
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:31pm Carmichael:

OK, back from kung fu-ing some people in a meeting. 2nd the 10cc for lyric wittiness. Richard Thompson is also quite clever with the double entendre.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:31pm robyn:

bergman writes about meeting garbo in his autobiography (which is a pretty cool read btw).
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:33pm robyn:

it was iirc sort of a disappointment.
  Thu. 4/25/13 5:35pm Ralphine:

This reminds me of an interview that Kurt Vonnegut gave at my school in which he talked about his life as a Saab dealer, which is where I found out that Saab is an acronym for Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget (I had to look up the spelling just now).
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:39pm glenn:

10cc? hmmmm. take the best moments of the hollies, add a smidgeon of cockney rebel, a dash of kevin ayers, and a sprig of kingsley amis. mix together and let breathe.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:40pm robyn:

these are some great recommendations.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:46pm Matt from Springfield:

Shame I couldn't listen to this from the beginning--I like concept drama, and with SPARKS!! I'll be sure to listen to this!

Bet Fab's making Clay wicked jealous! ;)
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:47pm Ken From Hyde Park:

All Sparks all the time today.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:48pm robyn:

this is sparks?
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:48pm Matt from Springfield:

The toy piano brings this to +10.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:50pm Dr. Goot:

This is way cool in many ways!
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:51pm steve:

did Sparks go full on House at some point?
  Thu. 4/25/13 5:51pm Greaseball:

Time to shake your Joeys
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:52pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I feel like the father who comes home to find his kids unattended and destroying the house. Fabio has clearly gone and gotten caught up in the latest issue of Maxim or something and has let the show just drift away.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:52pm Carmichael:

Synths and handclaps.
  Thu. 4/25/13 5:52pm Even:

re: 10cc:
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:53pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

"I am in touch with the essence of great music" would be a good button, too.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:55pm Carmichael:

Adrian Gurvitz?
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:55pm efd:

Adrian Fisher is correct!
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:56pm Matt from Springfield:

Clay knows whereof he speaks--former L.A. resident, he knew the "last glam rock band", Revlon Red!
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:57pm glenn:

you know, i'll bet adrian gurvitz gets mentioned on the comments board about 1000 times more than he gets played.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:57pm Matt from Springfield:

@Pete: "Fab gets Sparks to babysit the playlist while he goes out for some vino".
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:57pm robyn:

@even ha!
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:58pm glenn:

goofing off, if i had to mention just one.
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I like the term 'SmartPop' - but Googling it only gave me popcorn ads (!??!)
...You can say Robyn Hitchcock & not Dylan - but Robyn Hitchcock himself won't agree w/ you...
Avatar Thu. 4/25/13 5:59pm Matt from Springfield:

@RRN63: Keep mentioning it on these playlists, then! Best way to get Google mentions, one show at a time! :)
  Thu. 4/25/13 5:59pm Night Al:

It's spinning...fast.
