What now?
Wed. 4/10/13 3:01pm Listening Out There:

nice photo today...the flat foot floogie with the Froi Froi, eh?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:02pm fleep:

I got a nice thing.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:03pm rrg:

Me too.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:04pm Matt from Springfield:

Hi there, all of FMyouse.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:04pm Matt from Springfield:

I have nice things, to listen to! All the time here!
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:06pm Caryn:

Nice to have WFMU back (at least for now). If I suddenly stop commenting for a really long time, just take it as read that the weird atmospheric disturbances are back and I've lost my Internet connection.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:08pm Matt from Springfield:

Hi Caryn--hope that doesn't mean magnetic polarity is getting set to reverse soon!!
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:11pm Caryn:

@Matt: hmm... if this was a disaster movie, someone would soon uncover a heretofore unknown Mayan calendar showing that, yep, it wasn't December 2012, but April 2013 when the world comes to an end.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:12pm Caryn:

This song title seems strangely apt for the conversation...
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:13pm Sem Chumbo:

Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:17pm Caryn:

BTW, got the last of my 2012 Marathon swag today (well, apart from Scharpling's stuff and the 7SD porn tape). Lovely!
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:20pm Caryn:

The first 3 albums are apparently meant for the guy in "Memento". Once you forget Annette in 15 minutes, let me reintroduce her.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:20pm Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Always some "revealing" device like that.
And Merry Swagmas! Except for those two, which I'm also waiting for. But I'd like to thank Ken and Andy for their premium--they were so late with theirs, I was given a consolation premium in place of the porn commentary. So thanks guys, for allowing me to fit Dan Bodah's premium in as well! :)
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:23pm Caryn:

@Matt: that's true. Thanks, 7SD, for allowing me to take Fabio's premium home!
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:25pm rrg:

Ken's premium was also a no-show. I was given an alternative choice.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:26pm rrg:

Only five of us have spoken here today. Who will be number 6?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:26pm Matt from Springfield:

Fine selection! Fabio's OST was in my original swag, I've enjoyed it much.
Wed. 4/10/13 3:27pm Listening Out There:

the word for today is "mangopaunos"
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:27pm Caryn:

@rrg: true, but I'm not thankful for that, so I resentfully avoided mentioning it.

For some reason, I take the playing of any Billy Bragg to be a nod to the passing of Thatcher.
  Wed. 4/10/13 3:27pm Laura L:

Are you going to be playing any Margaret Thatcher records today too, Irwin?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:28pm Irwin:

@Caryn: Nope, picked that song to play b4 Maggie passed.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:28pm Alison Porchnik:

I didn't like my alternative choice to the Ken and Andy's sex dvd. Oh well, caveat emptor is a given with 7SD.
Avatar    Wed. 4/10/13 3:29pm Michael:

Hey there Irwin and everyone else. Speaking of premiums and also Annette, one of the first things I won or received during a marathon was Muscle Beach Party. Vinyl of course. Still in the house somewhere.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:30pm Caryn:

Apparently, Thatcher's favourite "pop/rock" track was "How Much Is That Doggie in The Window", so if you've got Amanda's version of that or something, go nuts, Irwin.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:32pm Snortley:

The very first 'thon back in the 60's had one piece of swag. Remember what it was, anybody?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:36pm Snortley:

Some time ago, there was an FMU listener poll to determine the worst songs of the mid-20th century. All-time worst was "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window."
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:37pm Parq:

Fine show so far, as always, Irwin. Kind of sounds a little more than usual like Charlie's stuff. Since I know you and he are long-time friends, I'm sure you will take that as a compliment (and it was meant as one).
Wed. 4/10/13 3:37pm "The Iron Lady" minister:

"How Much Is That Doggie In The Window?" Blimey, grocer's daughter always...
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:38pm rrg:

The "secret" Burger Joint in the Parker Meridien Hotel has now opened a second NYC location, in the Village.

Why am I telling you this? "Father, I'm telling EVERYONE!"
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:38pm Parq:

Snort, kind of amazing that FMU listeners could actually agree on something.
Wed. 4/10/13 3:39pm Listening Out There:

Thatcher was originally a research chemist. Does that explain her taste in music?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:39pm Rich in Washington:

Irwin, when is that Raymond Scott remix album coming out?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:39pm Caryn:

@Snortley: hey, if that's true, how come Ken hasn't been playing it to death on his show? Btw, perfectly understandable song for Thatcher to like. A song about a person's simple desire to carry out a monetary exchange for some canine goods seen in a shop window. Very free market.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:39pm rrg:

Are we hearing Mr. Raymond Scott himself here?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:40pm rrg:

"When two people disagree about a work of art, the person who likes it is correct."
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:41pm Lewis:

Is there a state-side distributor for that Raymond Scott Rewired disc?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:41pm rrg:

Wow! Thanks, Irwin.

This isn't so scratchy. Not really.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:42pm rrg:

"We are more hip than you." A great lyric.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:43pm rrg:

Bring it on.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:45pm rrg:

Sure, rub it in.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:45pm Matt from Springfield:

If you haven't seen "Beach Blanket Bingo" yet, see it, for your own cultural education. Also see, and contrast with, "Beach Ball".
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:46pm Caryn:

Gotta say, Irwin, I didn't think you played Bragg in any way because of Thatcher's passing, but only that hearing Bragg right now just automatically made me think that what with every single person apparently needing to state their opinion on Thatcher, I'm reasonably sure Bragg's said something by now. And how I can't be bothered to find out what that is.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 3:48pm rrg:

Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:04pm fleep:

Funicello, who was the first to concede she was not much of a singer, credited producer Salvador "Tutti" Camarata and the songwriting Sherman brothers, Richard and Robert, for coming up with the idea of double-tracking her voice and adding echo.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:04pm Carmichael:

I have lots of nice things to say about Annette and her pineapples.
  Wed. 4/10/13 4:05pm Brett:

That princess song was incredible
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:05pm rrg:

"I think you're keen-o, be my bambino."
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:06pm rrg:

The Shermans did well by Annette, and she did well by them by bringing them to Walt Disney's attention.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:07pm rrg:

Tall Paul!
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:08pm rrg:

Okay, I'm just cheering. Sorry. Not my usual articulate self.

There's a great video of this on YouTube.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:10pm Matt from Springfield:

The Sherman Bros. were great at writing at producing songs. They created that whole period of Disney songs.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:10pm rrg:

Who could prefer Dino's version of this? Not me.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:10pm Roberto:

Ah yes, Tall Paul. Brings back memories of my brother's senior recital at UCLA in 1984. A seemingly indigent and unaffiliated person crashed the reception, presumably for the snacks. She informed me that I reminded her of "Tall Paul, you know, from the Annette Funicello song."
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:10pm fleep:

For world music, everything has the same flat bland mid-American flavor every other Disney product had at the time.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:10pm Phelger Nank:

Why isn't radio just a means of playing annette 24/7/365? I want nothing more than this.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:10pm Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: When you get a chance, be sure to listen to this Finnish-inspired piece!
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:11pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:11pm rrg:

All right, I believe you about the vinyl.

  Wed. 4/10/13 4:12pm Jan:

Thanks for observing the passing of one of the first Baby Boomer icons.
  Wed. 4/10/13 4:13pm Laura L:

What's more, a moiré in printed matter is most unfortunate.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:13pm nah:

And thanks for introducing kids like me to her music!
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:15pm Phelger Nank:

Mores can be just as nasty.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:15pm rrg:

I like s'mores.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:16pm Phelger Nank:

Are s'mores, like, additional social norms?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:18pm rrg:

Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:18pm Roberto:

Regarding morays, I was recently at the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas and partook in snorkeling the aquarium. Now, the main section of the aquarium is with several varieties of sharks and rays, but when someone asked the guide if there were any eels, she said something to the effect of, "Yes, we have morays, but in a separate habitat. Ya'll won't see me swimmin' with no morays."
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:19pm Caryn:

Thanks, Matt!
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:19pm fleep:

How does it eel?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:20pm Roberto:

missing word: "abuzz" with several varieties
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:22pm Matt from Springfield:

My pleazh, Caryn!

S'mores are a social norm that should be even more normal than is currently. E.g., coffee and s'mores break in the afternoon. But S'more Pop Tarts don't count--those are just gross.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:22pm Roberto:

Oh crap. "Y'all" not "Ya'll"
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:26pm G:

Was in the car.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:27pm rrg:

Where are you now?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:27pm Droll:

G, Didn't notice that the light had changed?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:27pm Caryn:

The s'mores discussion leads to a wondering of the current US fast food and other trend for bacon. The bacon sundae at BK, the glazed donut bacon & eggs sandwich at DD, the bacon-flavoured condoms and bacon-scented cleaning products... Not to mention the various bacon sites people have linked to on WFMU comments boards. I fear a bacon s'more is looming in the near future.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:27pm Carmichael:

Where is anyone, really??
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:28pm robyn:

great song
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:29pm G:

On a couch. I can comment on a couch. I can't comment while driving a car.

Don't believe me about the couch? NP.

Your couch is beat to all hell, and seems to have been in absolutely deplorable taste when bought new.

Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:31pm Andrew Waterloo:

I must be bucking the trend by eating significantly less bacon
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:31pm nah:

Salty and fatty is good with most things, no? I think that is the main reason for the trend. That and the pig farming lobby.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:31pm G:

I can't believe no one ever did this to HJ before. (Minor key) Fantastic!
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:31pm Green Mountain Man Mark:

We lived in Nassau when I was in the 3rd grade. Back in the early 80s. I went to a Catholic school and of course that aquarium was not there then. But we would swim with the sharks and stingrays, baracudas. I had a total blast that year.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:31pm People Like Us:

Nice version of Hey Jude
hi Irwin :)
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:31pm rrg:

Now I have this find this album/bootleg/whatever. More work for me.

It sounds like another Beatles song now. BUT WHICH FUCKING ONE????
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:32pm Rich in Washington:

God, these key transposed songs are freaking amazing. They mess with your head in the best way.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:32pm Carmichael:

This is truly awful and unnecessary.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:33pm rrg:

I want to hear more from this album.
  Wed. 4/10/13 4:33pm AA:

Sounds like "hava nagila"
  Wed. 4/10/13 4:33pm ADL:

This is truly wonderful and necessary.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:33pm Matt from Springfield:

Is "MajorVsMinor" available commercially?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:34pm Caryn:

Actually, my dinner today had bacon in it... oh lord, I could be considered part of the trend.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:34pm G:

They'd never license that, Matt. Would they?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:35pm Andrew Waterloo:

I always though the bacon trend was more about absurdity/irony. Then again, Tim Hortons is coming out with a bacon wrapped timbit.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:35pm Irwin:

MvM is from YT
  Wed. 4/10/13 4:35pm Fred:

Another can you spell song...

@Matt in Springfield there's a ton to listen to hear but no download soundcloud.com...
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:36pm Matt from Springfield:

@G: True, knowing Apple Records policies. But...is the major-minor *tool* available commercially? That's all I need! :)
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:36pm Droll:

What a curious use of auto-tune... I wonder what the logical conclusion is of autotune. At some point it's ridiculous (ie: Cher), but that wasn't the bottom. This Beatles remix suggests were not anywhere near the bottom yet.

Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:58pm G:

the solo is based on The Little Drummer Boy j/k?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:58pm rrg:

Played on the gee-tar.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:58pm G:

everyone heard that. coincidental resemblance?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:59pm fleep:

Mass hallucination
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 4:59pm G:

that would be fun, fleep :)
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:01pm AnAnonymousParty:

I think the song just lapped itself.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:01pm rrg:

All right. I'm psychedelicized. Now what?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:02pm Caryn:

"The Little Cowbell Boy"
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:02pm Matt from Springfield:

@Mark: THYME!
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:02pm rrg:

How about that cat in the tree, huh?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:03pm Caryn:

I'm just psyched. The -elicized has not occurred yet.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:03pm G:

Psycho delicized? Qu'est que c'est?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:03pm rrg:

Yeah, yeah, 91.9 FM in Rockland County, where I don't live. I live HERE.

  Wed. 4/10/13 5:04pm rick:

Time was (and still is) one of my favorite songs growing up! I first heard it in Hal Ashby's film Coming Home, playing during a suicide scene. Thanks for playing it, Irwin.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:05pm rrg:

It'll be in the archive if you missed it.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:05pm G:

Listening to it on a treadmill? Is it a hifi treadmill?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:05pm Caryn:

@G: that's when a cannibalistic serial killer manages to get cold cuts made from his victims on sale at his local deli. I recommend them on a bagel.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:06pm rrg:

No more psychedelic overload? But there's still almost an hour to go.
  Wed. 4/10/13 5:06pm paula pc:

thanks so much for the breakdown Irwin. made my day
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:08pm Detroit Mac:

Damn weird!!! KSCU is playing a song that sounds like a muted version of this song?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:09pm G:

Caryn reminds me: If you have a chance, see "Eddy the Sleepwalking Cannibal." It's been in NYC since last week, and will disappear again soon, I'm sure. I was in a theatre with ten people watching it Saturday afternoon, two of whom I had gone with. -- It's Canadian, if that helps.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:10pm Droll:

I hate when I learn play along to a song in a certain way and later realize I'm playing it wrong. It's so hard to unlearn and re-learn how to play it. I can imagine Irwin is struggling with the humiliation of decades of playing it wrong, not sure why he drew our attention to his mistake.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:10pm rrg:

Doesn't help.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:11pm G:

That was my CanCon job for the week.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:11pm Caryn:

I don't know if I should salute the parents who named their kid Sinclair. Unless the "John, Sinclair" bit was actually "John Sinclair", in which case, I might like an autograph.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:15pm rrg:

Dead air.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:17pm Alison Porchnik:

<3 or however you write that.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:18pm Matt from Springfield:

@rrg: Our dead air is better than their air! (Well except the oxygen part--it kind of keeps us alive...)

@AP: That works. Or, ♥ (Alt+3)

Margaret Thatcher, Lili Pulitzer and Annette Funciello are standing in line at the Pearly Gates. Just inside, Billie Holiday is sitting at a cafe table, polishing off the last bit of her birthday cake. She looks up and says, "There goes the neghborhood."
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:20pm rrg:

All right, all right, already. I'll get the Jenn Grant album.
  Wed. 4/10/13 5:25pm Laura L:

Ir, Do you know if Alasdair came up with an alternate date for coming to the U.S.?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:25pm rrg:

It's spelled "Irwin", Laura.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:26pm Irwin:

@LL: No word from his US label. They'd contact if they had news. He loves WoofMoo.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:26pm Irwin:

Laura can call me Riwin if she wants.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:27pm hamburger:

The 'win' is silent :)
  Wed. 4/10/13 5:27pm Laura L:

Sometimes I spell it Wirin, because it looks so good that way.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:29pm Irwin:

And you can call her Luara or Lurau, becuase she loves typoes.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:30pm G:

I thought Wirin went with sushi. Typical graphic error.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:31pm rrg:

Which makes me think of Pineapple Princess.

Come on, one more Annette song. There are still 30 minutes remaining.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:32pm Rich in Washington:

I feel like we're trapped in a parody of a Canadian Film Board short subject all of a sudden.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:33pm G:

My bad :)
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:33pm rrg:

Spot on. Though it's called the "National" Film Board.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:38pm rrg:

Well, that's a good thing.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:39pm Rich in Washington:

@rrg: right. My mistake.

Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:43pm G:

Bacon is just that flab under your belly skin, only from a pig. Any questions?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:43pm rrg:

"Bacon is the candy of meat."

If you don't believe that, well, more for me.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:44pm rrg:

I'm not in Warren or Sussex counties, so I didn't need to know that.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:45pm Aaron in Minneapolis:

I bet you all missed reading my typos in real time!

Kitty wonders why clouds don't move...or did - wait - no.

- Attribution of your 3:40, rrg?
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:50pm rrg:

@RRN63: I heard that from either Teller or Penn. I think the former.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:52pm Droll:

I like the EAS messages for NY/NJ, it's so anachronistic over the internetz -- it's quaint. Especially because those rackmount printer systems are so obviously not from the internetz era.
Hey! It's XT... oh, wait, no, it's Bill Nelson.

Big percussion show today (except for the the Anette set). Thanks Erwyn, "see" you next week.
  Wed. 4/10/13 5:54pm Laura L:

@rrg--that sounds like Teller to me. Some years ago I published "When I'm Dead All This Will be Yours!," Teller's book about his dad, Joe.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:54pm northguineahills:

Papercuts, I like!
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well - he's Teller, so he probably told her. Altho' Penn may have written it...
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:55pm rrg:

Wow, I didn't know you'd published that, Laura.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:55pm Irwin:

LL: rrg knows them guys. rrg: LL knows them guys. Discuss.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:57pm rrg:

Them guys just got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which seems like a big deal to me. Hokum notwithstanding.

Yep. Designed and edited it too. Lovely book--great men, both a them Tellers, father and son. Irene was great too.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:59pm rrg:

What? Already?

Okay. Dinner time. I smell bacon.

Bye, all.
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 5:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thx! Good to see all. Next week sounds Kewl!
Avatar Wed. 4/10/13 6:00pm G:

We kept the Hollywood Walk sentence in Ebert's wikipedia lede. It's not nothing. Not the Pulitzer for Criticism (second sentence). But not nothing.
