Hi Liz - this is off to a good start :)

Liz Berg:

Stingy, long time no see! Glad you're still lurking. You shoulda said hi in the pet shop!

Hand-held recording devices... I have an old Roland Edirol, the station has a few lil' Sonys, all are pretty decent. Guess it depends on what you need: good built-in mic and/or adjustable, XLR inputs vs stereo mini, etc. Think we just got a Tascam that takes XLR in, haven't tried it yet, though.

The Zoom H2 is a nice reliable recorder, and relatively inexpensive.

Mornin' all in Berg-land. Don't know much about the recording devices..but the babka sounds great!

Good to see everyone here, you read my mind about the chocolate babka, Sem!

hey liz, whom may i contact to solve something about my pledge? i guess i've clicked somewhere on the marathon page and i pledged twice, but i don't have the money (nor i have chosen the swag, if it's irreversible)
  9:25am
stingy d:

yea i'm thinking built-in mic, but don't know if thats the wrong idea. i want to record noises at a outdoor basketball court and also conduct short interviews and make annoying statements from the sidelines. then chop it up into some sort of thing.

also, if anyone wants to join a co-ed bookstore basketball league in brooklyn. i'm your commissioner. total idiot.

Stingy, if you want small and portable with a built-in mic, I'd say go with the Sony. Actually, I'm pretty impressed with the iPhone's recording ability, too.
  9:38am
BenG:

For what it's worth, the Android using the App: Hi-Q MP3 Voice Recorder is damn good recording voice and it's MP3 format. I haven't tried it for music.
Avatar 9:38am

Digging this Richard Jonas piece.
  9:41am
BenG:

BTW, Audacity is open source (aka Free!) audio editing program and it's amazing.
  9:44am
stingy d:

oh yea! i have an iphone!!! oh man. unfortunately, i don't have an android, but maybe i can still look into that app?

and the zoom h2, you say. i will do a ton of investigating, so this is all very welcome information. thank you thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am
Liz Berg:

Stingy, the iPhone has a built-in recording app called "Voice Memos" in Utilities. I'm sure there are others, too. The quality is surprisingly decent (recorded live music with the built-in mic and it sounded damned good).

Do you guys have any preferred DJing programs on a Mac? Believe it or not, I rarely ever use my laptop for playing music. Always jammin Winamp on the studio computers.
  9:54am
stingy d:

yea of course, voice memos! i record subway music with that. why i haven't thought of this, is pretty frustratin, honestly.

as for mac dj'ng, i feel like traktor is the thing most fools think is the top jernt. but i dunno whatsoever.
  9:57am
BenG:

I don't know much about the DJ thing. My daughter makes that magic. I'll ask her.

I just bought a zoom h4n that I am quite pleased with. I bought it to recored ambient noise and the few recodings that I have done with it are quite good. I have not yet used the xlr inputs. It works as directed and moving recordings onto my mac is easy.

wrt DAW. I use audacity to do clean up editing and reaper to do production work. I am still very much a newbie but I think that I am on the right path...
Avatar 10:10am
Cecile:

I have a couple of DJ programs I have used on the iPod that I liked. Both had different strengths. I gotta go find my pod for the names.

Also, not really a DJ program, but hysterically fun and funny is Rap Mushi.
  10:15am
Greg Red:

The Orchestra-Atmosphere track just made me light some candles and sacrifice a chicken. Very ritualistic that piece. Glad it's not Tuesday, otherwise I'd be in, um, Trouble.
  10:18am

cecile, my ace!
Avatar 10:20am

how's it going?
Avatar 10:21am

Oh, a serious field recording program that I had a lite version of was Heidelberg. You could edit a radio program for broadcast on that thing.
Avatar 10:22am

I explored them for a bit as I was hoping to do some recordings of my in-laws and parents, but I figure my Smartpen will be better.
