Today's lunch special is prosciutto-wrapped chicken thighs over rice, with plum sauce.

Is Otis pleased to be back at the Dexter Lake Club?
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 1:55pm listener james from westwood:

hello pre-show all! i've got turkey and cheddar with green-leaf lettuce on ezekiel bread & semi-homemade cole/broccoli slaw.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 1:59pm Uncle Michael:

I already ate. bistecca, beans, rice and torillas from the carneceria.

Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:07pm Carmichael:

Chana masala and aloo gobi, James. Cheri already hipmotized me into the falafel thingie. I'm gonna go downtown, gonna see my gal.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:07pm pacific standard simon:

I'm prevented from eating or cooking Indian, most of the time, thanks to my spouse's irrational abhorrence of the smell of cumin.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:07pm Uncle Michael:

Simon, I drove from Omaha to Lawrence, KS to see them in 1979. We mocked Steve Diggle. I loved them.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:09pm listener james from westwood:

such a cumin loathing is a new one on me! my life changed when i realized it was the missing ingredient in my chili.
sounds great on both counts, carmichael!
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:09pm pacific standard simon:

Mickey Lee Lane? I am ignorant -- must research.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:11pm Carmichael:

Matt, I have a CD called Raw Blues on Verve. Otis Spann, Champion Jack Dupree, Curtis Jones, all backed by Clapton, Mayall, Peter Green, and Stevie Winwood (under a pseudonym). A must-have. I give it 200 stars.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:11pm northguineahills:

Crap, cumin is one my secret ingredients in my refried beans, chili, and just about most of my cooking (except what I'm eating right now). I go through it so quickly.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:12pm Matt F:

MLL also is responsible for the classic "The Zoo"...
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:13pm listener james from westwood:

it was really like flipping a switch. till then i had been wondering why my chili tasted so unlike mexican or tex-mex food.
is there a chance it's biochemical, like the cilantro thing for some folks, i wonder?
"it's a gas" always cracks me up! in other news, i am eight years old.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:13pm Matt F:

This one goes out to everyone who had Indian food for lunch.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:14pm pacific standard simon:

Somehow, in my various moves during that period -- between SF, Toronto, Detroit, & Lawrence -- I missed any opportunity to see The Buzzcocks.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:14pm listener james from westwood:

the indian jernt we're going to is also byob. so we can throw some beer on that fire!
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:14pm Carmichael:

Boy, does this Neuman song bring back memories. Did they include this as a flexi in a Mad magazine?
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:16pm pacific standard simon:

Excellent, Matt! I had a Mad magazine cardboard record of "Gas" when I was a kid, and nearly drove my family to murder.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:16pm Carmichael:

Every young male has memorized this album cover.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:17pm Uncle Michael:

Well, every pretty old one, now.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:18pm pacific standard simon:

Captain Beefheart claimed that Herb Alpert had someone play his horn parts while he mimed 'em, during live performances.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:18pm Gaylord Fields:

And then I saw the Pat Cooper "Spaghetti Sauce and Other Delights" parody cover — talk about things I can't un-see!
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:18pm Carmichael:

@UM: There may be snow on the roof, but there's still a fire in the furnace.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:20pm pacific standard simon:

Carmichael, I'd give a lot for snow on the roof -- I've got a bowling ball on the roof.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:20pm Matt F:

Hey it's the guy from Sunday night who hates everybody! Hi Gaylord!
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:20pm listener james from westwood:

heard this dinah cut from across the room, said, "dinah washington?" boom. this—this—is why i was so happy to pledge to fmu. had i never started listening i'd never have known who dinah was. wfmu was the musical cumin in the cultural chili of my life.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:20pm Uncle Michael:

The arrangement on this track is amazing.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:22pm northguineahills:

At the LP show (a gallery show of artists LP covers) about 8 years ago, Christian Marclay had a whole wall of Whipped Cream & Other Delights and parodies thereof and used each album cover as a pixel to make pics you could only make out from about 20m away.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:23pm Gaylord Fields:

Hiya, Matt! Hiya, Matt's WCBN pal!

Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:37pm Nate K:

More of a "not crazy about" than a "dislike," but this song cooks.

Modern Lovers? Mission Of Burma? The Ultimate Spinach? What next?

Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:40pm Matt F:

Evan, the next one will make up for it.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:41pm Matt F:

Bah none!
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:41pm Carmichael:

Although I loved the Cars at the time, I do realize that their production was always a bit more sterile than I like. And in concert, they're a bunch of wooden indians. Great-sounding wooden indians.

Glenn! I cited your influence earlier when Charlie played George Barnes.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 2:50pm Gaylord Fields:

Bobby Orr was the archetype of the high-scoring defenseman. And he made everyone around him better — which we Rangers fans dicovered when we got that garbageman Phil Esposito and Ken [spits on floor] Hodge in exchange for Brad Park and Jean Ratelle.

i just about fell off my chair when gaylord name-checked stompin' tom at the hoof and mouth.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:18pm Gaylord Fields:

Other show title idea: "Chips on the Ball" (that would probably work best for a New York sports show).
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:19pm Matt F:

I wish WFMU hadn't made the goal. We could be doing the sports show right now!
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:20pm pacific standard simon:

Hockey, feh!

Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:25pm glenn:

no. california golden seals. with the white skates.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:25pm Gaylord Fields:

Stompin' Tom's nationalism was so OTT, I found it endearing, especially because it's easy to forget that we Yanks don't have the entire franchise on flag-waving jingoism.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:26pm Gaylord Fields:

Besides, Tom had a good point about Canadian artists who "pass" as Americans at the first opportunity. Much better is exporting Canadian popular culture to the States, as SCTV did and did so well.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:28pm Matt F:

I was noticing recently that Joe Belock's laugh sounds a little bit like Johnny Larue when he's begging Guy Caballero not to fire him. Know what I mean?

No crane shot for you Belock!
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:31pm pacific standard simon:

@Gaylord - Watched many hours of the World Baseball Classic, recently -- have no difficulty with remembering that "we Yanks don't have the entire franchise on flag-waving jingoism".

Look Belock, you get one mic, and one camera. Got it?
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:34pm Danne D:

Dang Gaylord even calling out the Seals. I get the feeling like so many other trivia contests, Gaylord would thump most in hockey trivia.

Gaylord, who was the head coach for the Kansas City Scouts? What was his claim to fame as a player?
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:42pm Danne D:

Holy Wilf Paiement Uncle Michael, what a question!
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:42pm Matt F:

Y'know Doug, I actually couldn't find that record in Pburgh! It was like not being able to find an Aerosmith record in Boston!
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:42pm glenn:

well, they had 3 coaches in 2? seasons.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:44pm Uncle Michael:

Wilf was the Captain but not the coach...still, I'm impressed!
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:44pm pacific standard simon:

Yep, they sucked that bad.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:45pm Danne D:

@Uncle Michael as a Devils fan I have to know at least a little bit from the Scouts. Modeling your team play after the statue for which you were named was probably not the best idea.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:46pm Uncle Michael:

Wilf's claim to fame was winning a fur coat from a local furrier for a hat trick...but being single, chose a man's mink coat and wearing it himself.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:47pm Uncle Michael:

I should have reference "original" head coach...Bep Guidolin...claim to fame...youngest NHL player...in the league at 15, if memory serves.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:48pm Uncle Michael:

That ain't no lie, Danne.

Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:50pm Gaylord Fields:

Sorry, actually doing my work for a bit. He's not even my favorite Paiement. That would be now and forever his brother Rosaire, just for his name. Every so often I just intone the names "Rosaire Paiement" and "Yvon Cournoyer" just for their beauty.

Again, hockey = feh! It's baseball pre-season, dudes! The wave cometh.

This is nice, but Lena Zavaroni's version really nails it.
Avatar    Thu. 3/21/13 3:53pm Danne D:

Didn't realize Wilf was so chippy. Of course he never played for the Devils so he's not a guy I've focused a lot on: en.wikipedia.org...

Good to see that Evan could keep the "Starting with the 70s" format when he teams up with Gaylord for the "Fields and the Funk" sports talk show.
