These first three songs are the alarm clock I've always wanted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am braveness23:

CP, when you get a chance I need for you to explain your theory of likening Rush to Garrison Keillor
Avatar 9:14am Van in DC:

Hi Faye!

Whoa, I'm awake now.
Avatar 9:15am Cheri Pi:

holy crap...14 minutes into the show and already somebody brings up Rush....ok, bring it on....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am braveness23:

@CP, that might be best...
Avatar 9:18am northguineahills:

Late night Monday Rush was played on WFMU, and my gf screamed, "what is this prog crap!".

Slumberland Recs, w00t! There still around?
Swag For Life Member 9:19am Ralphine:

Rush Limbaugh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Faye:

I can guarantee no Rush tracks today, though I know that's a break from Hello Children tradition
Avatar 9:22am northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am braveness23:

Yes, on Monday at midnight DJ Nat Roe played Rush's Hemispheres side A almost in it's entirety! Of course this was immediately after playing several Billy Squire tracks through a belt sander and a flanger. He's a weird dude!
Avatar 9:24am Cheri Pi:

Yes, "Limbaugh." That would be a great name for an up-and-coming prog band.
Avatar 9:25am Chris from DC:

NGH, yeah Slumberland's still going strong. They're putting out some good stuff right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am braveness23:

Mine! I claim that one!
  9:25am ahmad:

Slumberland are very much still around and have released quite a few gems in the last couple years.
Avatar 9:26am dçþät:

Manchester Mekon?? I know that's not Langford as he's Welsh...

  9:46am ahmad:

Can't get enough of this album.
Avatar 9:48am Cecile:

Faye, you are adorable. You look just like the records you play. And your JB cover was excellent.

Anyone have any advice on how to break up with their barista? We don't bring out the best in each other but she makes great coffee. Still, the strain between us makes it taste not so amazing.
Avatar 9:48am Cecile:

She's very moody and I'm very blunt.
Avatar 9:49am dçþät:

just say you've switched to booze.
Avatar 9:49am Cecile:

Cecile, let her down gentle n easy. truth sometimes is not pretty but is required.
Avatar 9:50am Cecile:

Avatar 9:51am Rev. Turnip Druid:

"blunt" is just a short form of "efficient honesty." No fault there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Faye:

Haha Cecile!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Befriend her long enuff to learn her baristing secrets...
Swag For Life Member 9:51am Ralphine:

Are there any up-and-coming prog bands?
Avatar 9:52am dçþät:

anybody pay the ridiculous fee to see Cave yet?
Avatar 9:52am Rev. Turnip Druid:

RevolutionRN63: deal. Keep the wildlife organized.
Avatar 9:52am Cecile:

I think she should get her business out of town and/or get out of the customer service business. It's driving her nuts. If not, she should cater to the HS kids down here. There are 2 private schools, a music school and a magnet school. But she doesn't want to do that. So she just complains?

RR, drip coffee is challenging enough for me.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Stevel:

Mmmmmmmmm Snakefinger.
Avatar 9:53am Cecile:

Snakefinger was never on Celluloid. He was always on Ralph. As far as I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am tim from champaign:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am DCE:

great guitar sound there
Avatar 9:54am Cheri Pi:

I'm a tea person but i have a disgusting secret I can only share here, publicly. Sometimes I drink those little tube thingies of instant coffee, so I can get motivated to brew tea. I don't care what it tastes like. most times I just use hot water from the tap for this behavior.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am KevinfromBayRidge:

Warm post-Mara greetings from a cold, gloomy eastern Jamaica Bay loc! Great H&M Sinfonia job, Faye.
Avatar 9:55am Cecile:

Cheri, I have a stash of them for emergencies. I have also used Via in a pinch.
Avatar 9:55am dçþät:

he was amazingly amazing when I saw last year/year before....but too much dough for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am tim from champaign:

DC Pat...Cave, the psych band from Chicago?
Avatar 9:56am Cecile:

Maybe he was on Celluloid in France?
Avatar 9:57am dçþät:

Pi: similarly, I'll down a pop of Jameson so I can get ready to sip a black beer...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am tim from champaign:

D'oh, Nick Cave. Yeah, his ticket prices are reeediculous.
Avatar 9:57am dçþät:

@tim: Cave of the Nick sort.
Avatar 9:58am Cecile:

I think he lost something when he stopped being a fat little insect.
Avatar 9:58am Cheri Pi:

Via tastes pretty good but I'm such a cheapskate. I learned about those little tubes btw when we were in our camp up in the UP last summer. There's nothing like instant coffee and the sound of loons in the morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am G:

trouser trove? :p
Avatar 9:59am Cecile:

Yeah, exactly
Avatar 10:01am Cheri Pi:

DCP- there's no shame in having a pre-drink drink, to wet your whiskers and alert your liver to put itself on standby.
Avatar 10:01am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Driving across the country in the middle of winter in an old rusted cargo van with no heat and no money, circa 1993: the only means of survival was instant coffee mixed in a thermos with wretched warm tap-water from interstate rest-stops. BUILDS CHARACTER. Or so I kept saying.
Avatar 10:01am dçþät:

I wonder why I pay more than $8 to see groups at all. You can see some of the best stuff under the sun for that or less.
Avatar 10:02am Cecile:

I paid $75 to see Ornette and it was worth every cent. That was the most I paid without there being a big food and bar tab attached.
Avatar 10:02am dçþät:

I have trouble with the tea too--love green tea but can't get off the beans...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am KevinfromBayRidge:

My daughter won't let me access her emergency Via supply!
Avatar 10:03am Cecile:

Avatar 10:03am dçþät:

@Cecile: there are exceptions...
Avatar 10:03am Cheri Pi:

Avatar 10:04am Cecile:

dcp, Jackie Chan xtragreen unsweetened green tea beverage mix (aka matcha powder) comes in tubes, is cheap online and tastes good.
Avatar 10:04am Cecile:

It's my emergency stash at work.
Avatar 10:06am Cheri Pi:

ooooo I want to get some of those Cecile, it keeps crossing my mind but now I have to get some.
Avatar 10:07am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Swag For Life Member 10:07am Glenn M:

Avatar 10:07am Pale Son:

This is so great! Mary Wells is a dreamgirl.
Avatar 10:08am Cecile:

Swag For Life Member 10:08am Glenn M:

Rev. Turnip Druid, does the bsi website have a gear list on it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Faye:

good morning Glenn!!
Avatar 10:09am Rev. Turnip Druid:

niiiiiiiiiiiice. I finally found a decent vinyl copy of the CRISIS album. (impulse label, 1969) -- bloody phenomenal. I guess Denardo would've been about 12 on that record...
Avatar 10:10am Cecile:

That is such a great score, Rev.

I have Ornette at 10. It's pretty great, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am KevinfromBayRidge:

Occupational hazard of having post-college kids at home, Cecile! " It's the economy, stupid!"
Avatar 10:11am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Glenn: nope. Some of the releases go into gear-nerd details in the liner-notes but it ends up being like the taco bell menu: just different combinations of the same 6 ingredients, with an occasional weird thing (squeaky dog toy, plastic chattering teeth, etc)
  10:12am ahmad:

Decided to forego Nick and his outrageous ticket price last night in favor of Thao and the Get Down Stay Down. No regrets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Mike East:

my buddy was using a squeaky dog toy in his musical experiments. Weird minds think alike...sometimes.
Swag For Life Member 10:14am Glenn M:

Avatar 10:14am Cecile:

hahahahahah, Kev.
charge her rent in Via packets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Mike East:

(although it wasn't actually a toy for dogs, but a gun, with a plastic dog head for a barrell that opened its mouth and squeaked when you pulled the trigger)
Avatar 10:15am pierre:

Avatar 10:16am Cheri Pi:

Salut Pierre!
Avatar 10:17am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Mike: HA, but seriously, some of those dog toys have great range. Petco sells these HUGE green spiders with a squeaky abdomen, but it's large enough so it's more of a midrange grunt, easy to modulate depending on the squeeze. It definitely keeps live gigs from getting too serious...!
Avatar 10:17am Cecile:

oh, don't tell me it's discontinued.
Well, it looks like Stash makes one too.

Avatar 10:37am Chris from DC:

Which song, Cecile. The Infomatics?
Avatar 10:37am Rev. Turnip Druid:

FINALLY, a coffee worthy of MEEE!
Avatar 10:39am Cecile:

yeah, the informatics
Avatar 10:39am Cheri Pi:

I would have to be committed if I drank a cup of that coffee.
  10:39am Steve in Tulsa:

Avatar 10:40am Chris from DC:

Yeah, I could hear that.
Avatar 10:41am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Speaking of Brian: DC Folk: I saw a tweet yesterday that BT is DJing at Marx soon. Should we ambush the man with a creepy group hug?
Avatar 10:42am Cheri Pi:

Man-bush the man and maybe hire Phil Collins to serenade him.
Avatar 10:43am dçþät:

huh? Wha? Yeah, I'd give that a shot? Why Marx?
  10:44am ahmad:

Planning on being at that, Rev. I think Chris is too.

That, and the god-choking supply of Belgian ale on tap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am tim from champaign:

My wife and I switched to a french press recently and using better quality coffee. I really like it. We're not coffee snobs but my wife was getting bummed out with drip coffee tasting like "ass band-aids from an ashtray" (her words).
  10:48am ahmad:

DCP: it is the monthly "We Fought the Big One" DJ night which takes place at Marx.
Avatar 10:49am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Drip is for shits. I moved back to a classic percolator, & it was like going back home after being dead for ten thousand years.
Avatar 10:49am HEAT:

@steve thanks for the tip! Ggoood mooorning all
Avatar 10:49am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Oh hell, it's We Fought The Big One. That's quite a "get" for the guest DJ slot...
Avatar 10:50am Chris from DC:

Dilemma with that Marx gig: the Slumberland showcase at Comet is that night (see above). However, the Marx thing does run pretty late, so both should be possible.
Avatar 10:50am Cheri Pi:

Even I have a french press, Tim-your wife has a way with words.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Mike East:

We've been on the french press for about 5 years now...mostly cuz I don't have sufficient counter space for a mr. coffee, but as an added benefit it IS more delicious. I also have one at work...speaking of which...
  10:52am ahmad:

Judy's gig is actually the 7th. Baltimore pop fest which Jowe Head is playing is on 4/6.
Avatar 10:53am dçþät:

April 5? ooooooooooooo....Red Kross is playing...

Yeah, but Ahmad, "except Lorelei". Just saying.
Avatar 11:03am nah:

There's a new roastery in my 'hood, need to check 'em out. Ethiopian (Harrar?) never had it before. But points for fresh.
Avatar 11:10am Cecile:

or we will punch you in the dick.
  11:10am ahmad:

Stumptown is my favorite coffee going.
Avatar 11:10am Cecile:

Ethiopian coffee is astounding. And you should see if they do trad Ethiopian coffee. A whole service with it, very ceremonial.
Avatar 11:11am nah:

@pierre: at least she won't have a problem making coffee for a lot of guests!
Avatar 11:11am Cecile:

I am a fan of anything the B&W roastery does in Minneapolis. They do custom blends for sale for different coffeehouses and restaurants.
Avatar 11:12am Cecile:

Avatar 11:12am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Cecile: it's a cafe as well, so I'd imagine so...? Just a block from the house, so again, no excuse not to investigate.
Avatar 11:13am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Perhaps that means the old slum is finally turning the corner, eh? Next week maybe the Stroller People will move in! Whee!
Avatar 11:13am Cecile:

gotta do it, druid.
Avatar 11:14am Cheri Pi:

I've been called blunt, an insulting understatement made by ignorant persons with no vocabulary or observational skills.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am tim from champaign:

I love Ethiopian tea too. So heady. Mexican coffee is mighty tasty, also.
Avatar 11:15am Cecile:

hahahahaha, cheri. You difficult bitch.

Avatar 11:22am Rev. Turnip Druid:

hah. Perhaps now it's gotta be falafel!
  11:22am Rick from WO Town:

I love Dump. Heard he may be re-releasing his early stuff, like Superpowerless Off to Google....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Mike East:

@Cheri Pi - I wish I could get a good falafel delivered here. I was craving one yesterday. As it stands, I haven't decided what I'm gonna do for lunch. Open to suggestions.
  11:22am Steve in Tulsa:

I am going here for lunch: www.thehamburgerstore.com

It's where the Big Edna's Burger World scenes were filmed for UHF, the Weird Al movie.
  11:22am ahmad:

Oh I know. Was referring to Joanna Gruesome.
Avatar 11:23am Cheri Pi:

Damn Mike East- I feel your pain. What about Thai?
Avatar 11:23am Cecile:

summer sausage on rye bread
Avatar 11:24am nah:

I had a crap potato gratin with a crap piece of meat. Now hoping for a better and vegetarian dinner.
Avatar 11:24am dçþät:

ACK! Maybe run down to www.falafelshop.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am tim from champaign:

This Castle Face Velvet's cover record has won me over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Mike East:

@CP - very possible. I made some excellent tofu w/ thai peanut sauce over the weekend and my wife gobbled up all the leftovers so I missed out on packing it for lunch.
Avatar 11:25am Rev. Turnip Druid:

I so desperately miss working within reach of Amsterdam Falafel. I believe DC folk have ranted about it here before. But it's perhaps the best cheap lunch in town.
Avatar 11:25am Cheri Pi:

If you're stuck in a rut, a few sachets of Fruity Woebegon Nibbles™ will help you power up the energy to make a better lunch decision.
  11:26am ahmad:

Just found out about this comp last weekend! Some great renditions on there.

Hello children!
Good morning Faye.

Great marathon! Great hoof and mouth!
Now, back to business as usual!
The Thursday morning musical mental prep for Thursday afternoon and a cup of hot green tea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Mike East:

though I only got $21 to cover me for lunch today and tomorrow so I gotta stay on the cheap
Avatar 11:27am glenn:

i think mike east should take responsibility for his own lunch decisions. why should we be the ones to blame if his lunch goes south? :)
Avatar 11:27am northguineahills:

Now we just need Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Co.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Carmichael:

Top o' the mornin' Faye and Friendship Society peoples. Top of MY morning, anyway.
Avatar 11:28am northguineahills:

There's that $1 pizza slice place by the Port Authority.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Mike East:

it always works out, glenn. didn't you recommend the butter chicken a few weeks back? That was dynamite.
Avatar 11:29am Chris from DC:

It's tough that Amsterdam is just out of lunch range for me. No falafel around here compares.
  11:29am ahmad:

Falafel does not get better than Amsterdam in DC as far as I know.
Avatar 11:29am Cheri Pi:

I had Indian yesterday- I'm all for it ME
Avatar 11:30am glenn:

butter chicken roti, actually.
Avatar 11:31am Cecile:

I'm in DT St. Paul. It's a falafel desert here.
Avatar 11:32am dçþät:

However you CAN overdose on Amsterdam...not the fries though...
Avatar 11:32am glenn:

which is wonderful, but also has about 3000 calories.
  11:32am Steve in Tulsa:

Get some Somali food!
Avatar 11:33am nah:

butter chicken roti sounds amazing.

I'm in a small town that has at least three falafel outlets about ten minutes walk from my home (=workplace). Feels good. They are all kinda run of the mill falafel though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Mike East:

yeah, there was no roti on the menu.

I just smacked myself in the eye with the phone, if anyone is interested.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am tim from champaign:

What's Somali food like, Steve?
Avatar 11:35am andymorphic:

@glenn - ghandi!
Avatar 11:35am Local Optometrist:

Hmmm. You should probably come in and have that looked at.
  11:36am Mark in the UK:

Finally getting to listen to todays show. Hi Faye... congrats on your Marathon show last week!
Avatar 11:36am glenn:

ghandi. absolutely. or mother india. same people.
Avatar 11:37am dçþät:

if anyone's interested, the wife is taking the car for some fucking meeting so no falafel for me...looks like going to be a tofurkey sub...

Grow your own vegetable face TODAY!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Ike:

Aw man, now I want falafel. Upper East Side is a falafel desert too. I'll wait until after work and get one for dinner from Taim or Pitopia.
Avatar 11:42am Rev. Turnip Druid:

A vegetarian can eat his own face, it's in the bylaws under "consenting protein source."
Avatar 11:42am Rev. Turnip Druid:

...as pioneered by the suicidal calf in Hitchhikers' Guide...
Avatar 11:44am Van in DC:

Ahmad @11:29 Amen!
Avatar 11:47am northguineahills:

I'm keeping it simple today, steamed sticky rice w/ rice vinegar, and a and a wee bit of soy sauce and some chili powder w/ raw egg dropped into the bowl (it cooks due to the hot rice).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Ike:

RTD, if I had been drinking anything, I would have spit it all over my screen when I read "consenting protein source." You are the wind beneath my cackling, unkempt wings.
Avatar 11:48am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Clearly you need to start drinking, Sir Ike. Or maybe I do. Does Bushmill's pair well with Falafel?
  11:48am Mark in the UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Faye:

haaahaha hi Mark!
Avatar 11:49am dçþät:

you always have something interesting going ngh..

BUSHMILLS? For shame..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Ike:

Woe be unto me for my supertaster issues. Need a new tongue so I can appreciate beer and dry wine. Until then, I slurp ridiculously sweet wine like SaraBee white moscato.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am maestroso:

Splendid show today, Ms Faye. Once again, congrats for a great Marathon!
Avatar 11:51am northguineahills:

Just a cheap-ass Japanese breakfast that I also dig for lunch.
Avatar 11:53am glenn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Carmichael:

Dammit, now I gotta jump on the falafel train. To falafel town. Jeesus, I sound like Guy Fieri ...
Avatar 11:54am Rev. Turnip Druid:

HA, dcpat: I'll take a Bushmill's Black Bush over a Jameson any day. Jameson be too sweet. If it's someone else's $$, it would be an islay scotch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Ike:

Noticed matcha powder discussion earlier. Wish I dug it, but it's like lawnmower juice to me. Chinese & Taiwanese green tea are my thing, but those are never powdered.
Avatar 11:54am glenn:

or dickens cider, for that matter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am G:

@Carm: That's money, man.
Avatar 11:55am northguineahills:

Although I love great wine and scotch/tequilas, I can appreciate crappy beer & spirits. However, I can't waste my time w/ shitty food.
Swag For Life Member 11:56am 12539:

Quiet thanks for a good loud show, Faye!
Avatar 11:56am dçþät:

Black Bush not so easy to come by but mostly I make joke...I'll take either but mostly I'll have a good bourbon which is also sweet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Carmichael:

Oh, and on the discussion of liquid amphetamines, here is where I order all my tea: www.harney.com I live on the wrong coast.
Avatar 11:57am Chris from DC:

DCP: yes on the bourbon.
Avatar 11:58am northguineahills:

Thanks Carmichael. I'm out of loose leaf teas and mates, I now must use tea bags.

Sigh of the tiger! I thought of that two hours and twenty two minutes after the show ended. Not really a quick thinker am I.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Cooh John:

Nice show. I was going to listen to last weeks show with YLT, but it was not archived. Listening to other episodes of HC multiple times should compensate.
