Listener comments!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Cory:

Really digging this song Irene, thanks.
Avatar 12:14pm Sem Chumbo:

I gather not all FMU DJ's are raving extroverts, judging by last night's Hoof and Mouth performances. All pretty gutsy, though.
Avatar 12:16pm Yair Yona:

Hi everyone.
just read Jason Molina (of Magnolia Electric Co and Songs:Ohia) died. bummer pitchfork.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Irene Trudel:

No, a lot of us are quite introverted... except when we're not. ;D

Thanks, by the way to everyone who made our Marathon fundraiser such a success. Love you all!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Irene Trudel:

Oh, that's sad news, Yair! Maybe I'll have to play something by him. Do yo have a favorite?
Avatar 12:23pm Yair Yona:

Really sad news. How about It's Easier Now. Hope things are easier indeed for him.
Avatar 12:24pm Van in DC:

Hi Irene and everyone.
  12:26pm Richard from Venezuela:

We miss you Jason. great songwriter.
Avatar 12:29pm Van in DC:

Seems I've heard a lot of Steve Wilson lately...that's a good thing :)
Avatar 12:29pm Danne D:

Sounds very reminiscent of U.K.
Avatar 1:12pm nah:

First time listener here, hi! That Alexander Turnquist track was absolutely sublime, thanks!
  1:13pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Hi Irene, sorry for my tardiness, I keep forgetting it's a four hour time difference instead of five, hello one and all
Avatar 1:19pm KP:

Good afternoon, Irene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Irene Trudel:

Hi Sean, and everybody waking up late! I'm barely here, but floating on a nice musical cloud.

KP, nice to see you and the missus last night at the Hoof & Mouth performance.
Avatar 1:32pm KP:

We were very happy to see and especially hear you. MJM now has one foot firmly in the WUFMU field. but you know these uptown types.
Avatar 1:33pm KP:

I saw Flash. They sounded exactly like yes but with guitar as the mainstay instrument instad of keys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

Ah, the jazziest of Yes.
  1:33pm Clay Pigeon:

Irene, thanks so much for paying tribute to Peter banks. He never got the credit he deserved. His work with his post-Yes band, Flash is excellent. RIP Peter Banks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Clay! I heard a few days ago and with all the Marathon hubub I wanted to make sure I mentioned Peter Banks' passing.
Avatar 1:36pm KP:

I'll always have a smidgen of respect for Yes because they covered this Byrds song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm G:

Thanks for the Peter Banks -- he's the original Yes guitarist here, and died last week... Sad situation. Here's a message from the fansite "Notes from The Edge" last week, FWIW:

"Notes From the Edge
Nic Caciappo asked that we post the following regarding the state of Peter's remains, and how you can help. If you have any questions Nic advised to send him or George Mizer a message via Facebook. More updates as this develops. Thanks.

Friends of Yes & in particular Peter Banks. It has been since last Thursday Mar 7 that Peter passed away. He found at his home on Fri Mar 8. His body is still in the morgue and not being claimed because he has no family, and only an ex-wife who doesn't wish to assist. He may be cremated by the morgue and his belongings taken into custody by authorities. His ex needs to at least to tell the morgue that his friend(s) can take over. Then, they will want fees for cremation and delivery of his remains. Peter's belongings are still safe. But, there will be a need to sort this out with helping hands. "
  1:37pm Clay Pigeon:

@KP, Banks has been called an "Architect of prog," and really formulated part of the Yes sound. If you want a complete Yes sound-a-like, see Starcastle.
  1:37pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Great Yes track, Irene, a fitting tribute to Mr Banks. Hello Mr Pigeon
Avatar 1:38pm KP:

Uh, i'll pass. But seeing Banks and Flash was a treat.
  1:38pm jeremyo:

Very nice to be able to catch your show live for once, Irene. So pleased WFMU hit its marathon target - we get a bargain service whatever we pledge! (even if I'm not much of a Yes fan ;-) )
Avatar 1:39pm KP:

Somebody mentioned Starcastle on air the other day, i think it was in a Clay Pigeon context.
  1:39pm Clay Pigeon:

THis early Yes sounds so good Irene, thanks again. Kirsten and I love your show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm G:

I suopose people know about the famous interview that Peter gave years ago about the early 90s Union tour, when he was invited by the group to play a show, but as Peter recounted in rather vivid detail Howe supposedly had him locked in his dressing room with a guard so he couldn't get on stage. Howe denies that, but we all know Yes is a mess, personnelwise.
  1:42pm Clay Pigeon:

@KP - Starcastle's debut on Epic is really good. Kind of like the missing Yes album. but in a loving, fan-worshipy way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSZepYc219Y
Avatar 1:43pm Danne D:

Thanks for this Irene. RIP Peter Banks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Clay! I unfortunately never got into Starcastle.May have to give it a second listen.
Avatar 1:43pm Droll:

I knew if I came out of lurking to thank you for the prog set, I'd be last to join in.
. o O ( Happens every year: as soon as the 'thon ends, out come the Mellotrons for their 8-minute adventures )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Hey all, Congrats Irene. Clay ,glad you're here for some Prog support. Us types need to stick together 'round these parts! Of course Irene's show is a safe harbor for many of the things we love.
  1:44pm Clay Pigeon:

I wish we could all go on this Yes "Cruise to the Edge" with tons of great prog bands ... even Zebra! Though, no without Jon Anderson, it doesn't feel like Yes ---- http://cruisetotheedge.com/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm G:

@Clay: FMU tie-in to Starcastle -- My college roommate did management work at WCBN (where Ken and others here also did college radio), and told me if I liked Yes I had to come to down to the station with him to listen to this new totally Yessy album. It was Starcastle, duh.
Avatar 1:45pm KP:

It might have been Ken who mentioned them.
  1:46pm Clay Pigeon:

Love the prog talk - love Irene - must run! Bye all. Thanks for making our Thon so rockingly incredible!!!!
  1:47pm Clay Pigeon:

Great story, G I leave you with Henry Cow. ----http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vfpq11-sRVQ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Irene Trudel:

Sorry for the long drones and Mellotrons. It felt more like a Proggy day rather than Jazz odyssey time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Tome:

didnt' even know about this record wow - bit.ly... - was, still am time to time a big prog fan and I'm sad too,,today, those first 2 Yes records indeed a required listen, to all that love or care,,
  1:49pm Clay Pigeon:

Irene, I see that Steven Wilson used Robert Fripp's personal mellotron on his new record! Drone on!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Irene Trudel:

Aw, Clay, if you leave now you're gonna miss Flash, which is up next.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Tome:

Irene & wFMu made the goal!! if you don't hear it here you won't here it anywhere ! it's great guitar work on here , you played the longest track Irene hehe "short" for a prog rock fan like me !!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Parq:

Hah. As soon as I heard Peter Banks, I knew Clay would have to be in on the conversation. Howdies to you both and congrats on brilliant H n M performances.
Avatar 1:51pm Van in DC:

Love Robert Fripp. But REALLY love his wife. :)
Avatar 1:52pm Droll:

"Crusie To The Edge" sounds fun... until you consider spending a week aboard a ship with 5,000 prog rockers. If they did it in Vegas we'd have a deal.
Why no Starcastle reunion for that cruise? Their manager's asleep at the wheel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Irene Trudel:

Yeah, Tome, "Two Sides of Peter Banks" has long been a favorite of mine but does get a bit noodly, as in the track I played. Features Phil Collins on drums and Jan Akkerman (Focus) on 2nd guitar.
  1:53pm Clay Pigeon:

I'll be listening, Irene! By the way, Flash (Colin Carter, Ray Bennett) are making a new record. Here's a rehearsal glimpse. ---- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDInU0FmCGM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm G:

You'd have to hogtie me to get me on Cruise to the Edge. And the fansite hardcores have been making continuous fun of it ever since it was anaounced last year...
Avatar 1:55pm Droll:

From the description of the Flash rehearsal video: This is the 3 min. coda of an 8 min. piece.
YEAH! That's how I like to see it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Played this vinyl to oblivion back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Irene Trudel:

Cool! Looking forward to a new disc. Always like Flash. It appears to be out in sometime in May.
  1:57pm Clay Pigeon:

I'd like to stowe away like Leonardo DeCaprio in Titanic on that Cruise to the Edge. Stand at the front of the ship with my arms outspread. Just to see Bozzio with UK and Zebra.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm G:

@Clay: I'll wait for the ROIO's (boots) :)
Avatar 2:00pm Droll:

CP, I saw UK w/Bozzio last year. They've still got The Goods. Zebra is a band I never got to see live, can Randy still hit the high notes?
  2:02pm Clay Pigeon:

@G - I'd iron Chris Squire's sweatpants for a boot of that tour.
@Droll - Randy can still hit those notes. --- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXCubq-YxH0
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Parq:

This is all making me think that I'm 16 and in high school again. What a ghastly thought.
Avatar 2:06pm Droll:

I'd iron Chris Squire's sweatpants...
Yep, that pretty much ended the conversation and the prog rock set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm G:

@Clay: There are recordings of virtually every Yes show out there since the mid 90s. (Only of some before then.) Trust me on this. I must have about 150 (?) myself.

There are always multiple digital recordings made by audience members since the late 90s, and people remaster them and whatnot. They sound practically like official releases. We checked with the band years ago, and they are ok with it as long as the heavy traders buy all official releases, and people just trade shows (no money). The band's even gotten old show recordings they didn't have from the trading community...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Parq:

Gee, G, that's something. Who'd ever think that the Dead and Yes would have something in common?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm G:

Yep lmao
Avatar 2:12pm Droll:

G, Fripp has sometimes officially released a live show to undermine a popular bootleg. I own at least one boot that became an official release decades later.
Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Ralphine:

I like Rick Wakeman's Criminal Record. Especially "Birdman of Alcatraz" and "The Breathalyser."
Avatar 2:13pm Droll:

I've heard of some bands selling USB drives of the show IMMEDIATELY after the show in the lobby! That's the way to go.
Avatar 2:14pm KP:

Great set, irene!
Avatar 2:14pm Danne D:

@Droll (1:52) agreed - it's too scary of a journey to consider taking
Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Ralphine:

That Yes cruise isn't on a Carnival boat, is it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm G:

@Droll: It's just another part of the great Prog Retirement Program :) That's what got Anderson booted, he didn't want to tour as heavily as Squire and Howe, while they still can...

About the USB idea -- traders tried to get them to do soundboards of the shows and sell them, but they are just oldschool and do not think along lines like that. They want their share of the gate and merch, that's what has always worked for them...
Avatar 2:16pm KP:

Danne D, dont even mention Journey.
Avatar 2:18pm Danne D:

@Ralphine - those cruise stories in the news add an even more horrifying dimension.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Mike East:

This morning was tough. I had to reveal to my wife how much I pledged...and I didn't even tell her about all of it....and I had to remind her that my birthday is next week and that she should consider leaving me alone about it my birthday present.
Avatar 2:22pm Cheri Pi:

Mike East-you are not alone my friend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I went too far, if you ask the me of the beginning of the marathon, or even the me of right before the last $20. But the me of today knows there's no point in looking back at this point, and that those earlier mes knew that would be the case.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Mike East:

Thanks, CP. I also stressed that its tax deductible and that I'm the one who's going to be doing our taxes in a couple weeks. (see how I turned it around there)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Hugo (NL):

So glad you guys reached the goal! one more year of WFMU Fun! as we say in Holland: Joepie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I also know that I managed to be vague and upbeat about it all last year as the knick-knacks came in and my girlfriend kept asking, "how much did you give them?" I can do that again for another year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm pete:

Sounding great, as always, Irene! Sad to hear about Jason Molina. I knew him a little bit in college. Very talented guy. RIP
Avatar 2:28pm Cheri Pi:

Mrs. ME is lucky to have a husband like you who cares this much about the family's finances.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Mike East:

ha! Its funny that you're playing this record! I pledged an extra 50 bucks instead of buying this album for myself (for my birthday)!
Avatar 2:29pm KP:

My favorite era who. I first saw them when Who Sell Out was out. Thnks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Mike East:

@Cheri Pi, she knows it, too! She calls me the CFO of our family...she's CEO, of course.
Avatar 2:32pm KP:

The Who and Kinks, foevever linked. But who came first? Not the former.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

The former always precedes the formee.
Avatar 2:34pm Cheri Pi:

I've bled the CP/HQ coffers dry last week with no regrets. What's a little deferred gratification amongst millions of friends?
Avatar 2:35pm KP:

See ya irene. Great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I have always liked "I Can't Reach You," even though I have always felt like there's something flawed with it I can't put my finger on.
Avatar 2:47pm Looms:

Great album by Bill Fay.
Have to say that the first BF album I ever owned was Still Some Light; and I won it as a prize in your show during the marathon a couple years ago.
Avatar 2:52pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

[splutters awake]
blood? what? Yes. Blood. Neat, please. And I'll have the mushy peas as well. Cheers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks for all the great chat, folks! Catch you all next week at noon!
  2:56pm FMUzoid:

Great show today Irene, Thanks!
  2:57pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Irene, unfortunately missed most of the show, missed some great stuff that is right up my street, great show as always, have a great week everyone
Avatar 2:58pm Van in DC:

Many thanks as always Irene, have a wonderful week!
Avatar 2:59pm uuee:
