Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Andrew Waterloo:

this is the best Beatles song ever
Avatar 3:15pm Cecile:

How about the song "A pig foot and a bottle of beer"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm fred:

Bethany! The only good thing about your being off the schedule is that I get to hear you live once in a while
Avatar 3:16pm Danne D:

Hi Bethany great to hear you on the WFMU airwaves as always :) You and Irwin make quite the team.
Avatar 3:17pm Danne D:

You can get any DJ you want by pledging $75+ now at 800-989-9368. You can also still show your allegiance to Bethany by adopting her for 2013! Info here:
Avatar 3:18pm Danne D:

Irwin can still be adopted too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm fred:

Hi Danne!
Avatar 3:20pm Danne D:

Hiya fred :)
3:20pm Louisa Hamm the Glamour Dazzler (on the ball):

This is going to be a wild ride! I am in love with Bethany and Irwin! As both a footballer, and a commoner both.
Avatar 3:21pm Danne D:

If you find yourself unable to decide which of these great premiums you want, and you are a person of means, a great thing to do is pledge $3000 - this will get you EVERY dj premium and a Day of Joy at WFMU to boot! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Ike:

Bethany! Rule this timeslot! Streamroll right on through here! Yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm fred:

All those premiums will keep you busy for months listening to great stuff. And you no longer have to make tough choices. I heartily recommend it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm G:

I have *no* predictions!
  3:35pm herb:

oooh, STOCHASTIC is on hiatus. thanks for updating me. (and i'll nag again, for the 4th or 5th time: i've donated an extra 1% of my total to wfmu for past few years. if if if you can, plz do so. every little thing is magic; STING sez so.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm infotermoo:

Happy international women's day, Bethany and also the others here!
Avatar 3:38pm Van in DC:

Hi / bye drive by!
  3:40pm Don Juan:

Put up a date with Terri-T & watch those pledges fly in...I'm good for 5G on that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Andrew Waterloo:

This reminds me of Mexicali Singers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Skirkie:

"Well this is a lovely surprise." - what I thought when I read this on the schedule last week.
Avatar 3:44pm northguineahills:

Did I really take a really, really, really, long nap, or is Bethany filling in for Kurt?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm fred:

@NGH: She is, but maybe you did
Avatar 3:46pm Bethany Ryker:

@Danne D, thanks for sharing all the best pledging strategies! Hi Everyone!!
Avatar 3:46pm Bethany Ryker:

It's me!!
  3:49pm The Fake Bethany Ryker:

It's not me, it's her!!
Avatar 3:50pm northguineahills:

Phew, I thought it was a Sunday night and it was summer schedule or something...., (looks out the window), oh looky, there, there's snow outside, it's still Fridayish.

Got a call from potential employer during my nap, scared to call back, in case it isn't good news (but it might be good news).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm fred:

@NGH: Call back! Not doing so can only turn good news into bad news, not the other way around
Avatar 3:54pm northguineahills:

I am, just waiting for my tea brew so I'm lucid. (didn't sleep well last night, somewhat do to this issue).
Avatar 3:54pm Danne D:

God Bless the Phone Slaves taking pledge cards like that one.

(From a perpetrator of many of those types of pledge cards)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Skirkie:

Here here
Avatar 3:54pm Danne D:

@ngh call - this way if you strike it rich you can pledge more maybe ;o)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm G:

"stochastic" is a term widely used in probability theory in math. in comes from Greek _stochos_ meaning target or aim. It means you are moving in the direction of something, not like with strict logic or an absolutely rigorous proof, but instead by trying to move in the approximate direction in order to make a gradual approach to a desired goal.

i'm more of a fan of combinatorics, mathematically :)
Avatar 3:55pm Danne D:

a little quick to agree there, Skirkie :/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm G:

yeah, more classical stuff we don't know yet. sounds good. :)
Avatar 3:56pm Danne D:

Congrats Sean :)
Avatar 3:56pm northguineahills:

Statistically, nothing is "provable" (ie:100%). Stochastically, everything is nothing but probabilities.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Skirkie:

Ha ha, yup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm fred:

Danne, if your posts had a heart for each one of your pledges, we'd have to scroll to see them all
Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Ralphine:

I'm more of a fan of Technotronic.
Avatar 3:59pm Danne D:

@fred lol well I'm just a serial pledger :) Lots of folks give more. Hopefully all give what they can whether it's in a bunch o'pledges or all in one shot :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm G:

within a close system of fixed terms (e.g., euclidean geometry), things are provable -- but only within that system.

the external world is more complex and multifactorial, and everything is stochastic. otherwise, we'd have all arrived at and agreed on the right answers about everything already, and that is manifestly not the case :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm G:

close s/b closed, duh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Ken From Hyde Park:

OK, that's good info on stochastic. Can someone explain the parade part?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm fred:

@G: not all things, said another G. But why agree? That would be boring
Avatar 4:02pm Danne D:

Avatar 4:03pm stefica:

@northguinea: good luck with that phone call
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm fred:

@Ken: Take a hit, the parade will explain itself
Avatar 4:03pm Danne D:

And a bit more about Stochastic Hits - which brings it all together: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 4:04pm Danne D:

Forgot about the truncated linking, that first like is about the parade part for Ken From Hyde Park
Avatar 4:06pm Danne D:

Used a lot in time series analysis - a topic that in spite of my degree I have pretty much forgotten I'm afraid to say
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Scott McDowell:

Nice Blakey track. :)
Avatar 4:08pm glenn:

six degrees of danne d.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm G:

Ken *never* tells people, "No Rush!!!" He just throws up in his wastebasket when it comes on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm G:

The current board seems to be Stochastic Heart Parade.
Avatar 4:10pm northguineahills:

Thanks, stefica!

Brain, slowly returning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Skirkie:

I simply could not miss A440 when it was on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Carmichael:

Irwin & Bethany! Nice surprise. Is Kurt a marathon fraidy cat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Carmichael:

@ngh: if they don't want you, they'd have sent a letter. They're calling with good news. Now answer the call!
Avatar 4:22pm northguineahills:

Just called. They want to have a 30 minute follow-up on Monday. So, no, I don't officially have the job, but it looks rather positive. Hopefully, I can start pledging next week.
Avatar 4:24pm northguineahills:

The ninth interview (5 weeks ago), came off really positive. But, they said it was up to the HR dept (of the NYC Office of Emergency Management) to draw up the contract, etc. I just got nervous b/c of the wait. (even though my previous gov't jobs had similar waits.)
Avatar 4:25pm northguineahills:

I play French horn (I just can't afford one), I just have a cornet w/ a broken spit valve. I do have a handful of French horn mouth pieces that I'd use on the cornet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm fred:

@NGH: I'll have my fingers crossed -- some of the time -- over the weekend then
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Mike East:

@ngh - if you need to borrow a french horn for a gig for a day or two, I got you covered. :)
  4:30pm paula pc:

i am all for the classical and jazz on FMU anytime...thank you...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm fred:

There's something Pythonesque about the Office of Emergency Management needing 5 weeks to figure out they want a follow-up interview
Avatar 4:31pm Mary Wing:

I want to star this-- Bethany, update the playlist, please!!
Avatar 4:32pm northguineahills:

Thanks Fred!

Cool, Mike, I'll need to get my embouchure back into shape beforehand, but I'd love the chance to play again. Also, once I have a paycheck again, do you know of a good place to get my spit valve fixed?
Avatar 4:32pm Adam in Portland and Lynnwood:

@Mary Wing: me too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm G:

Working, but here to mention that FWIW a fun progrock fact -- namely, that Prokofiev is Rick Wakeman's role model composer (he wrote about him in college). In recent years, he's taken to playing an Eleanor Rigby/Prokofiev mashup during his solo shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Andrew Waterloo:

It would be totally awesome to wake up to live classical music
Avatar 4:33pm Mary Wing:

Aaah, starred for the permanent record.
Avatar 4:34pm Danne D:

@G once again showing that Prog Rock is Good for Your Head
Avatar 4:34pm northguineahills:

I had one gov't that took 5 months from the first interview until my first day on the job. I'm just 2.5 months for this one. (almost 3 months since I discovered the email typo on my resume.)
Avatar 4:35pm northguineahills:

gov't job

Avatar 4:36pm Mary Wing:

Interesting what comes up on a google image search for embouchure, heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Mike East:

@ngh, yes. Brass Lab...a guy named Chuck Alexander, in Brooklyn. Your hood I think (maybe meserole and bushwick)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Carmichael:

My current govt job took about 3 months of interviews and background checks. Seems par for the course, sadly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Mike East:

(I'll see if I can find a phone# and email you)
Avatar 4:39pm Bethany Ryker:

More on the grand prize found here: www.unusualcreatures.com the package also includes Andrew Bird's Useless Creatures
Avatar 4:40pm Danne D:

Bethany is being really nice and playing a lot of music :) people should show their appreciation by pledging and get that pledgometer to go up!
Avatar 4:41pm northguineahills:

That's my block, Mike, I need to look that up. Duct tape doesn't quit work, unless I'm going for a breathy timbre.
Avatar 4:43pm northguineahills:

Since we have Hungarian compers, how about some Ligeti (Gyorgy or Lukas [Lukas, the son, is American, but, yeah....])
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Andrew Waterloo:

I really enjoy the Andrew Bird stuff that I've discovered through FMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Mike East:

he does good work. though we just sent him a sousaphone that we had repaired with gaff tape and he sent it back and told us to bury 6 feet under. We will still rent it out as a prop, though. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Sigurdur:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Sigurdur:

wow wow wow
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm G:

Good thing I picked this Mary W premium as one of my choices...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Andrew Waterloo:

@G, yah, it almost makes up for not grabbing Bryce's. But I will just add it to the list
Avatar 4:50pm Danne D:

I always have a hard time picking out premiums each year
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Carmichael:

Maybe they could have a "random" category for those of us who have choice anxiety. Check the box and take your chances ...
Avatar 4:57pm steve:

hey ho everybody... can anyone tell me if there's an easy way to change what premiums you're getting after you've already made the payment? id hate to bug Joe McG but if there's some easy autmated way i do urgently need Bryce's premium, about which id previously been unaware.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Andrew Waterloo:

@steve, I think you just need to call in
Avatar 5:01pm northguineahills:

Email, steve, I've had the same problem nearly every year. (hopefully it'll be a problem this year as well ;)
Avatar 5:01pm danjoseph:

Hi Bethany, from Dan in Brooklyn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Andrew Waterloo:

I have some small pledges that I might upgrade to another $75 pledge
Avatar 5:05pm steve:

cool... thanks guys. ill email after the marathon. Joe McGasko has been super nice about stuff like that but i feel bad about bugging him! what a nice guy he is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Sierra:

It is a joy to hear Bethany again! I am still learning the Tango from last year's premium;)
Avatar 5:08pm Danne D:

@steve I thought they give you a chance to confirm/change your selections when the billing comes in. I hope that's still true as I didn't give a complete list of choices the first time around :)
Avatar 5:09pm northguineahills:

Moar Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm G:

people constantly ask me about classical music at cocktail parties. thrash metal, too.
Avatar 5:13pm steve:

is everyone else going to cocktail parties without me? i dont think ive ever been to one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm G:

i haven't since about the late 90s, steve. i was screwing around. rare, i know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Carmichael:

I say "cocktail parties" sometimes, but in my case it translates to "keggers".
Avatar 5:18pm northguineahills:

I miss the days when I could mix in Bach, Lightning Bolt, Richie Hawtin, Mandarin language tapes, Fairport, Xenakis, and jungle mixtapes in the same dj set, and do better then break even in NYC (and make enough $ to support myself through grad school). Nostalgia notwithstanding, WFMU provides that daily, so, pledge for those who currently can't. (nudge your friends as well).
  5:18pm Jaca Pwal Adamu:

what is this gamble away my time stuff?
Avatar 5:20pm glenn:

i think n.g.h. is saying wfmu needs to go to grad school.
  5:20pm Jaca Pwal Adamu:

and who are you; where is KG?
Avatar 5:25pm steve:

ngh - when was that? all i see these days around here is stoner house crap...
  5:25pm Jaca Pwal Adamu:

Isn't this Kurt's show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Carmichael:

Oh that's right, Kurt said he was going to Europe. Lucky devil ...
Avatar 5:26pm Mary Wing:

Jacu, Kurt is in Norway this week. He'll be back on air next week.
Avatar 5:26pm northguineahills:

steve: 2000-2003. Mostly Halcyon and Tonic, and a handful of other venues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm G:

KG said last week he couldn't be here this week, Jaca. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm G:

Shades of Les Paul...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Carmichael:

Yikes, that was magical!
Avatar 5:38pm steve:

ngh, i think i wouldve liked nyc a lot more around then... i didnt get here til 2006
Avatar 5:45pm northguineahills:

Yeah, by 2004, anybody w/ an iPod could dj, and most managers cared less about content, so, $ dried up for creative djing.

(I sound old)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Sierra:

Long time listener. 3 day old "friendship society member". I like the way you can track favorites. And thanks for the Nina Simone Irwin;)
  5:48pm muhrvis_daylight_savings_blows:

Greetings from Corvallis, OR.
Avatar 5:53pm steve:

ngh i imagine a lot of the folks who hang around the silent barn these days would appreciate that... in fact im certain they would.
Avatar 5:54pm steve:

i mean, appreciate your djing
Avatar 5:55pm Danne D:

hiya muhrvis :)
Avatar 5:56pm northguineahills:

Yeah, around 2004, I started working full-time +, and most of my dj friends/musicians had families, etc, so, I've lost contact w/ most. I've been to the Silent Barn a'many a times, but, I don't really know the folks there. I sometimes dj for Talibam! shows, and few other friends shindigs, but, those are gigs of labor of love (for the music and the friends).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm cklequ:

Ah.... the webcam is up (almost).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks for the parade of stochastic hits!
Avatar 6:02pm northguineahills:

Thanks Bethany & Irwin!
