A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am braveness23:

Fear not about the whole pope issue. I have offered my services as the next pope. Still waiting for clarification on whether me not being catholic is a deal breaker.
  9:33am Mike Yahwak:

whats up with the blog? It uses to updated daily now nothing for a bout 2 weeks?
Avatar 9:34am northguineahills:

There was a post-rock band on Rephlex Recs called Jones. Also hard to google.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am braveness23:

We were about to have our chickens slaughtered because they stopped laying about 6 months ago. They must have heard us talking about it because last weekend we heard the ruckus than can only mean one thing - a freshly laid egg. Two of the girls kicked in gear in the 11th hour and started laying again.
  9:39am Magda:

Good Morning Everyone,

Happy Tuesday!
Avatar 9:40am Brian in UK:

@B23 Interesting if the man from Ghana gets the nod when the smoke blows. Cannot see it. Do not hold your breath waiting clarification. Only 11 million in this world.
Funny ours stopped pre-Xmas, then kicked off again recently.

Hey Trouble. Did you see this video about printing meat? I think many vegetarians may find it nice. www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am tim from champaign:

NGH, check out Detrola from 2006. It's one of my top records of the 2000s decade. HNIA also did an excellent tribute to Marion Brown around 2008 or so.
Avatar 10:50am Jennique:

Mornin' Trouble & friends. Just poppin' in from home today so I will have to go back and listen to the archives. I see you played Mos Def "Quiet Dog". Shout out to Westminster, yo? Went yesterday, good times. Curious to see who wins Best in Show.

motorcycle mama, I can remember when this was released, 1972! I need a rocking chair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am braveness23:

Love this song 'holocaust '
Avatar 11:07am Van in DC:

Kind of a This Mortal Coil sound, eh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Ike:

You mentioned Clockwork Orange. I just saw Clockwork Orange for the first time and I thought it was lame and WAAAAAY overrated but I'm not a Kubrick fan. Dude had a heart of solid black ice. There is nobody to like in any of his films except for the most psychotic, murderous characters -- Alex in C.O., HAL in 2001.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am tim from champaign:

I'd rate Holocaust as one of the heaviest songs ever.
Avatar 11:11am v k:

originally by Big Star - had no idea
Avatar 11:12am ffrr:

Shelly Winters in 'Lolita' is so memorable as to be likeable. Hi T.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Trouble:

big star wrote it in 74, released in 78. this mortal coil and rainy day versions were released in 84...
Avatar 11:14am Brian in UK:

@Ike. Kubrick is no Mr Chuckles but CO is of its time. Your opinion might be different if you saw it at the cinerma in '69. Ever read Burgess' book?
Avatar 11:16am v k:

a more contemporary cover of 'holocaust' is echoing in my head but can't place the artist - help?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Ike:

@Brian, no, and a friend likes the movie because he links it to the book, but I can only judge based on what I saw on the screen. The victims all being marginalized or portrayed as upper-class jerks was awful -- my friend says that's because it's all Alex's POV but I don't buy it. There are plenty of scenes without Alex present. If the book is an unreliable narrator kind of thing, well, that's ONLY the book. Kubrick can't get away with that excuse based on how he filmed it.
Avatar 11:18am glenn:

who doesn't love the possum?
Avatar 11:23am Brian in UK:

@Ike Not sure about it being all Alex's POV. Burgess' attempt at a future vision then put through Kubricks sensibilities!! Like them or not. A stylist?
Avatar 11:24am Brian in UK:

@glenn is that Carly Simon's version?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Ike:

Pauline Kael's awesome review of C.O.: www.visual-memory.co.uk...
Avatar 11:28am listener mark:

Shrove Tuesday is in full effect.
Avatar 11:30am Brian in UK:

@Ike I saw the film when it came out & read the book but have had no desire to see them again.
NOW the soundtrack is a different thing.
Avatar 11:30am Palmer Eldritch:

There must be a band called 'Nigerian Boogie Badness'. If there isn't, I have formed it. In my head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Trouble:

sounds good to me palmer eldritch!
  11:31am Yarblockos:

Kubrick understood the limitations of film. It is neither a strong vehicle for narrative (hence the remarkably lush and uneventful Barry Lyndon) or character (hence the salience of HAL among all roles in his films).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Ike:

@Brian, I agree, the soundtrack was cool. @Yarb, film not good for narrative or characters?!? Har har, you're winding us up.
Avatar 11:42am listener mark:

Thank you DJ Trouble, happy music for a dreary, damp morning.
Avatar 11:43am Brian in UK:

trouble, I bought Grasscut after you played them, seen them since. These boys like a map!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am fleep:

Good day, Trouble, air people, org people
  11:47am Yarblockos:

I got a million of 'em. Seriously, though, I have a very hard time suffering--I mean, watching--movies. Kubrick's are at least entertaining, because they don't try to do more than the medium can support, in my view. Another limitation: it is impossible to act on film. This is why Ryan O'Neal was such a perfect lump of nothing in Barry Lyndon. But, hey, I think Blazing Saddles is cinematography at its finest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Trouble:

hey big shout out to all the new commenters today: welcome aboard maties!
  11:51am Yarblockos:

Avatar 11:51am Brian in UK:

@Yarblockos can I assume you are male then the only reason to watch BL was Marisa Berenson. Nudge nudge wink wink.
PS never seen it.
Avatar 11:52am v k:

Barry Lyndon my favorite Kubrick film - by far

Happy Mardi Gras!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Trouble:

hey faye!!thanks allllll you fabulous peeps!
  11:57am Yarblockos:

Brian: Yep, XY here. Approaching supernumerary, too, so I'll confess to having read Time magazine's review of the film when it was first released. MB was, of course, an attraction, but I'm also a dork. Thus, I was as interested in the much-hyped natural lighting during the scenes of her deshabile as in her shapeliness.
  1:14pm Olga:

Trouble, I just discovered that you played "Here Comes the Sun" this morning about ten minutes before I had the same idea. I had an urge to here it for obvious reason and first thought I wanted the Beatles version, but then went for Nina Simone. So excited I'm finally thinking like my favorite DJ!
