Hola todos mis amigos! Tonight's show will be on for 180 minutes until it's not. And then it will continue to be on forever in the land of magical unicorns and rainbow wizards. Love love love this Tull album. Nice to see you all.
  Mon. 1/28/13 9:12pm PB:

OMG, I thought I'd never have to hear Ian Anderson's flute ever again.

@PB, I'm so sorry you were thought you would be so deprived. I am here to help, fear not. I'll play more Tull later if you like, don't be shy about asking.

I'm on the hate wagon for Tull, but I've never heard any FMU DJs express hate as far as I can recall. Maybe they do it internally? Several DJs play them. I can't fathom why. They STINK!!!!! ;)

I'll admit the only period I had true disdain for Jethro Tull was when they beat out Metallica for Hard Rock/Metal Grammy (1989. that was rough.)

PP = Tull's Topographic Oceans
  Mon. 1/28/13 9:38pm ?:

I must admit I do like some Yes (especially the early stuff) but Tales From Topographic Oceans is pretentious unlistenable crap.
Avatar    Mon. 1/28/13 9:38pm slugluv1313:

liked some Tull stuff when i was a kid, early 1970s . . . but like so much "progressive" rock back then, their music just got more . . . BLOATED

the drummer is clearly on different pills than the rest of the band on this song
Avatar    Mon. 1/28/13 9:44pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

Jethro Tull was where the nerds and the rockers overlapped. Some Tull albums are flat-out blues rock, some are noodling prog odysseys, but there are a few points both agree on.

I think "Stand Up" is a stand-up album. It would be easy to convince a lot of people "Cat's Squirrel" is a lost Cream B-side.
  Mon. 1/28/13 9:44pm PB:

@slug, like Townshend/The Who's Who Are You?
Avatar    Mon. 1/28/13 9:44pm G:

Ut oh, don't blame me guys, I was just funnin' :)
Avatar    Mon. 1/28/13 9:46pm G:

I could play just about the entire Yes and Tull catalogues from home, don't need to force it on anyone :) I'm not a prog proselytizer! -- but someone should play some neo-prog sometime, just to piss Ken off.
  Mon. 1/28/13 9:46pm PB:

Next week, broadcasting live from The Castello Plan, Jethro Tull!
Avatar    Mon. 1/28/13 9:47pm steve:

  Mon. 1/28/13 9:49pm PB:

Red Krayola make Captain Beefheart sound like the Monkees. Bizarre, bizarre stuff.
  Mon. 1/28/13 9:50pm srahbdah:

Can we talk about how awesome the covers are for both Yes and Tull albums? My father got into Tull purely because of the covers :P Also, on a related note, I went to a geek convention in Boston last weekend, and saw Roger Dean, who designed all the popular Yes covers. He was a nice gentleman.
  Mon. 1/28/13 9:52pm Ozzy Skateboard:

yes covers were always better than the music contained I thought hehehe

Sounds like Kim Gordon in severe distress. Kim Gordon is a really, really bad singer in the best of circumstances.

Totally true. In olden days on alt.music.yes (if anyone remembers usenet) Spock's Beard was the cat's meow.
Avatar Mon. 1/28/13 9:58pm Dan Bodah:

It's OK Pete, I totally remember it from the 90s, but I know 15 years is an eternity in webtime. It's the neolithic era of the web. :-)

@ PB -- YUP! all the "boring old farts" put out albums like that!
Avatar    Mon. 1/28/13 10:01pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

The "post-rock" of the late 90s was very proggily influenced. I don't if any of that is still around, because I bought a bunch of those albums and fell asleep for ten years. (!)
Avatar    Mon. 1/28/13 10:02pm G:

On alt.music.yes, people loved saying Radiohead really were prog-influenced after they got big. This is maybe mid to late 90s...
Avatar    Mon. 1/28/13 10:06pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I should shut up now, but Usenet was king before anyone used the web (which was all just yellow words in lists then anyway). The second-most popular thing I knew of on the internet was Gopher, which was -- you got it -- more lists of yellow words that you used the arrow keys to get around.

Oh, and, we liked it that way.
Avatar    Mon. 1/28/13 10:07pm G:

Pete is OG. I only got web access maybe in 94...
Avatar    Mon. 1/28/13 10:08pm G:

Pete loved ftp, too. That was fun! :)

Oh dang, Usenet in 1993. Yeah, hmm, I might admit I was there.
Avatar    Mon. 1/28/13 10:11pm Andrew Waterloo:

Fortunately most of my thoughtful sci-fi TV analysis of that era has vanished into the ether, @G. Not so forever after all, unless there is a better Usenet archive than Google.
Avatar Mon. 1/28/13 10:19pm Dan Bodah:

Good lord I miss the days of usenet before the web. I remember when the web first came out and I was checking it out on Mosaic and I was like, what the hell? This is stupid -- it takes a million year to load these jpgs, just give me a nice txt directory to ftp what I want from.

One proggy thing about APP is that the key is constantly changing. Only makes sense that Dan would add the twist of the speed constantly changing. Mostly in an accelerating direction, to get it over with faster. :-)
Avatar    Mon. 1/28/13 10:29pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

I remember people on the BBSs talking about the Internet like you would jet packs -- "Sure, it exists, at least in theory..."

Avatar    Mon. 1/28/13 10:31pm G:

@steve: APP is 45:05 (just checked) -- even with acceleration it's gotta be 15-20 mins...
Avatar    Mon. 1/28/13 10:32pm steve:

hahaha. awesome. i like turntable stunts!
Avatar    Mon. 1/28/13 10:33pm G:

@steve: That's what reviewers wrote in 73. "This thing just goes on and on." And it's only one vinyl album, unlike 73's Topographic, which was two. Wakeman used to say it was one good album padded out to two.
  Mon. 1/28/13 10:34pm PB:

That's what George Martin said about the White Album. I think he was right.

Avatar    Mon. 1/28/13 10:41pm G:

But there are always long-attention-span people or conoisseurs who like even kind of indulgent stuff. Here's wiki on the Clash album you referenced:

"Sandinista! was voted the best album of the year in The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop critics poll, and it was ranked number 404 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2003. Slant Magazine listed the album at number 85 on its list of "Best Albums of the 1980s" in 2012."

Twenty-odd years ago I met Ian Anderson and Martin Barre in a hotel. They looked gaunt, weathered, and small but menacing -- sinister gnomes, basically. Unable to find anything else the pen would show up on, I asked Ian Anderson to autograph the only light-colored thing I had.

He paused for a minute and rolled his eyes, then bent over and wrote his name on my pants.
