Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Mike East:

I made an awesome kale salad last weekend. The rest of the week I've just been juicing it.
Avatar 3:47pm glenn:

yes. sometimes my copy and paste skills are lacking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm DCE:

isn't kale kind of rough to eat raw? never tried that
Avatar 3:49pm Honey Water:

Nice 'burns, Mike.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Mike East:

that's a joke, right, glenn? please tell me that article's not true.
Avatar 3:50pm ḑĉ ṗáŧ:

DCE: no way. Take out the tough stems, chop, pour on some olive oil, add garlic, salt. Work the oil into the leaves with your fingers and yer done. Really good.
Avatar 3:50pm Cheri Pi:

Raw kale is divine, toss it in a vinaigrette dressing for sure and let it set up before diving in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Mike East:

I blanche it, DCE. drop it in boiling water for about 3 seconds, shock it with ice water. Add sesame oil/soy sauce/rice vinegar/tofu/sesame seeds = delicious
Avatar 3:51pm Honey Water:

I keep hoping all the articles glenn finds for us originate from The Onion, but alas....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Mike East:

thanks, Honey Water. Tryin' to be cool like my dad.
Avatar 3:51pm Cecile:

fabi-yo! hola, all.
Avatar 3:51pm glenn:

i just post this stuff. i don't write it. it could be something out of the onion, though.
Avatar 3:52pm Cecile:

I would let the kale sit a good long time in the acid, or it's roto-rooter time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm tim from champaign:

Mike East - your kale salad sounds good? I made a raw kale salad last week with cooked bulgur, sweet peppers, onions, tomatoes and a white wine vinegar/olive oil dressing.
Avatar 3:53pm glenn:

you guys know i love you all, but it's sometimes hard for a non american to figure out what's going on down there. or up there, if we're talking about the crazy ms. palin.
Avatar 3:53pm BSI:

Dr. Benway (my iguana, ages ago) dug it like a junkie. That & bok choy. But then, he was weird.
Avatar 3:53pm Cheri Pi:

Mike East has the exact right idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm tim from champaign:

oops - didn't mean to put the question mark in there doubting the deliciousness of the kale salad recipe.
  3:54pm βrian:

Yeah, I find raw kale to be a bit much unless it's slivered into a chiffonade. Kind of like a mouthful of kapok.
Avatar 3:54pm Honey Water:

@glenn: If things had gone a different way in November, you might have had our company in Canada.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm DCE:

will try it, due to the glowing recommendations!
Avatar 3:56pm ḑĉ ṗáŧ:

add a little parmesan and aged balsamic vinegar to my recommendation and it'll be perfect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Mike East:

truth be told, I got a kale and seaweed salad from a place that delivers called Zen Palate and it was delicious, so I approximated the recipe with my detective-like taste buds and made it at home. Seaweed is hard to come by at Stop n Shop, though.

Avatar 4:00pm Kurt Gottschalk:

hey! just tuned in while waiting for the streetcar. what have i missed?
Avatar 4:00pm Cheri Pi:

I would blanch if I had the time but I think that letting it sit in the acid bath gets the job done too, w/ less work.
Avatar 4:00pm βrian:

Kale and wakame. That works. Hmmm, yes. Some roasted sesame seeds, lemon juice, scallions ...
  4:01pm Marmalade Kitty:

My pack of rizla in town costs 35p.. The man who serves me tobacco in the shop in town confidently tried charging me 50p!

I had to haggle him down to 35p..!?
Avatar 4:01pm Cheri Pi:

Note to self, buy that Rameses reish on Mexican Summer...
Avatar 4:01pm BSI:

@Mike: Cronenberg's film of Naked Lunch had just come out. We ended up with Dr. Benway the iguana and when I rescued the boxer, her name had to be Fadela. All we needed then were a couple of rats or something (Hauser & O'Brien)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm DCE:

you missed the streetcar--it just passed by!
@ tim, always cooking but I make my menus up on Friday nights and then cook a lot on Sat/Sun
Avatar 4:01pm βrian:

"I like stoplights ..."
Avatar 4:04pm Honey Water:

I just love how most of you men do a lot of cooking. Never had that quality in a mate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Mike East:

oh yeah, I put some scallions in there, too.

I thought Cronenberg's take on Naked Lunch was fantastic.
Avatar 4:04pm glenn:

follow this with devastator, fabio.
Avatar 4:04pm Cheri Pi:

diced red pepper goes great in the kale salad too along w/. edamame.
Avatar 4:05pm Kurt Gottschalk:

...i forget what i was waiting for
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm G:

was it maybe the streetcar?
  4:06pm ted:

wow, you're testing my patience Fab with this Can, not unlike watching Micheal Snow's Wavelength!! Streetcar....yes....i get it!!
Avatar 4:06pm BSI:

Cheri: hell yes on the Ramases thing. I first heard it several years ago when David Tibet did a podcast for someone, turned me on to that Ramases record and OM at the same time. It was a head-a-splode moment.
Avatar 4:06pm slugluv1313:

Zen Palate AND Cronenberg's Naked Lunch are BOTH freakin' awesome -- although sad to say, i am totally lame in the kitchen, lucky you, Mike, for being able to recreate!
Avatar 4:07pm slugluv1313:

@ Honey Water -- i was thinking the EXACT same thing!!!
Avatar 4:07pm Cheri Pi:

The vegetable soup recipe Fabio's guest featured on his show (god knows when) was delicious, I made it at home, it was like a green borscht- so tasty and nutritious.
Avatar 4:08pm Honey Water:

@Slugluv: Clearly the FMU group of males is not a representative sample. :)
Avatar 4:09pm Cheri Pi:

I'm all over it now BSI. so glad Faye played it this mornin'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Mike East:

@slugluv1313 - that place is a bit pricey, so recreating it is the only way I'll get delicious food like that as often as I crave it.
Avatar 4:10pm Cheri Pi:

BSI-I may be getting a kitten this month. I'll consult you for naming the beast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm DCE:

this is THE BOMB
Avatar 4:11pm slugluv1313:

ha ha! success AND failure in the kitchen??!!
Avatar 4:11pm BSI:

re: the cooking thing, improvising a veg. curry while drinking heavily is about the peak of my skills. The kitchen is invariably destroyed but the grub is usually awesome. Though impossible to repeat. That's improv. for you.
  4:12pm Dieter:

Suckcess of new age" sprocket" dance.
Avatar 4:13pm Cheri Pi:

Oh Dieter!
Avatar 4:13pm Honey Water:

@BSI: You hit the nail on the head. While I'm sure Philo *could* whip up something if he put his mind to it, the kitchen is a disaster after. We have a rule that whoever cooks, the other cleans up after. I'm most *happy* to cook.
Avatar 4:14pm Kurt Gottschalk:

yes, yes ... the streetcar ... now where did i put that?
Avatar 4:14pm βrian:

This is also the season for roasting vegetables. Parsnips, onions, carrots, potatoes, beets –– you name it. I like olive oil, salt and fresh rosemary. A squeeze of lemon before serving.
Avatar 4:14pm glenn:

could there possibly be any other name for cheri's kitten than............VOIVOD?
Avatar 4:14pm slugluv1313:

@ Mike East -- yes, i know what you mean -- PRICEY, so a rare treat
@ Cheri Pi -- KITTEN!!!!! YAY!!!! (yup, guess i am a bit *biased*)
@ BSI -- yeah, i totally suck in the cooking department -- EVENTUALLY i will get a recipe "right" but it is only after numerous attempts!
Avatar 4:16pm βrian:

When I was in a coöp, I always signed up to clean when I cooked. Cleaning as you cook saves time and lives.
Avatar 4:16pm BSI:

recipes are cheating.
Avatar 4:16pm Cheri Pi:

Voivod! the Kitten! Hmmm you may have a point there Glenn. I'd be so excited all the time.
Avatar 4:17pm βrian:

@slugluv1313: That's what we call Strength Through Failure.
Avatar 4:17pm Honey Water:

Rosemary, yes. I'm making rosemary chicken tonight and baking potatoes. Sides of steamed cauliflower and broccoli florets.
Avatar 4:17pm Cecile:

Cheri, when did you get your kitty, and ITA with calling the little scamp Voivod.
Avatar 4:18pm BSI:

Any kitten would naturally live up to the name.
Avatar 4:18pm Cecile:

BSI: stoves are cheating.
Avatar 4:18pm slugluv1313:

ha ha! COOKING is cheating!!??
Avatar 4:19pm Cecile:

Fabio, have you got any Necks around there? My allergic brain needs to be soothed.

Fire and/or hot rock are OK.
Avatar 4:19pm BSI:

Good point, Cecile. A pile of vegetables & garam masala on an overturned trashcan lid + fire should do the trick. Either way, the kitchen is gettin' trashed.
  4:19pm Ol' Uncle Si:

I don't get it -- where's the news about what has happened to the Fiveash and Barron streams on Ichiban? I don't get it. Posting here out of huge puzzlement.
Avatar 4:19pm Cheri Pi:

Not yet Cecile, after Ted Lio passed away right before Christmas I didn't think I'd be ready-but they're a kitten sale at the local rescue for $10!! all shots and deutering included. I'm ready for kitten madness.
Avatar 4:20pm Honey Water:

@BSI: I'd say recipes are starting points, especially for people new to cooking. Eventually they aren't needed.
Avatar 4:20pm βrian:

*Love* the Necks.
Avatar 4:20pm BSI:

Avatar 4:21pm βrian:

Purple blood, yes.
Avatar 4:22pm Honey Water:

βrian: Oh, Philo has it quite easy since I learned to do a lot of cleaning up while cooking when I lived alone. He just doesn't do the same in reverse. ;)
Avatar 4:23pm slugluv1313:

@ Cheri Pi -- GO FOR IT!!!! bless you for getting the kitties from a rescue!!! :)
Avatar 4:23pm glenn:

Avatar 4:24pm βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Carmichael:

Avatar 4:32pm Cheri Pi:

Yeah, it's been so long since I've adopted anyone, My cat's tend to live forever. I'm giddy just thinking about the little future monster.
  4:34pm Ol' Uncle Si:

Well, that's it for me, in regard to WFMU financing, if it can't even tell me why some of my favorite streams have disappeared. Vacation? Deletion? Who the fuck knows! I've put up with this crap long enough.
Avatar 4:35pm slugluv1313:

ah, perhaps it would be better to be DIETERED??!!
Avatar 4:35pm BSI:

Gomez just turned 6, already muzzle is flecked with gray. This is both cool and sad.
Avatar 4:36pm northguineahills:

Yeah, I never follow recipes unless the cuisine is new to me, and even then, I find half a dozen, and adjust according to my tastes (and still eyeball the measurements). Most dishes I don't have to think about, and throw in whatever needs to be utilized before it spoils.
Avatar 4:36pm Cecile:

Si, why don't you email Kenzo or Ken? I don't listen to those streams, so I don't know what is going on with them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm DCE:

what is this guy ranting about?
Avatar 4:36pm Cheri Pi:
