Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm G:

Definitely not "guano" -- welcome back for today, Bethany...
Swag For Life Member 3:04pm 12539:

Hi Bethany!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Matt from Springfield:

Yay Bethany!
Slavic Surf rock by way of Polovetsia! Great start!
  3:05pm rrg:

Hello, Ms. Bethany. I'm here for the "music from 1964" that you promised...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Matt from Springfield:

Will today be an "A440" or a "Stochastic Hit Parade"? Or something in between?
Avatar 3:07pm fred:

Good afternoon Bethany. It's always a pleasure to hear your show
  3:07pm rrg:

Hey, tell me where those little thumbnail images on the comments are coming from.

I don't have one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey G, 12539 (Bethany's adopter!), and rrg!
Avatar 3:08pm Cecile:

Bethany! Good ta hear ya.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm G:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Matt from Springfield:

And fred!

@rrg: Need to register or sign in to the WFMU Friendship Society at the top of any page. Then you can upload your pics (and even GIF animations).
Avatar 3:08pm fred:

@rrg: You need to create a profile (there's a "register" link on the top of the page) and upload a picture as an avatar
Avatar 3:08pm slugluv1313:

hi Bethany! always love hearing you on WFMU!
Avatar 3:09pm Van in DC:

In for a bittle lit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Mike East:

I get a Mike Patton vibe from this. I dig it.
  3:12pm rrg:

@fred: Thanks. I guess I never noticed or bothered. Irwin's playlist doesn't display any avatars.

If I register, does that mean I get to also "reserve" the handle that I use when posting?
Avatar 3:13pm other david:

Yay, A440 - always a treat! Nice to hear you back, Bethany :)

*pulls seat up to the bar*
  3:13pm rrg:

Oh, and thanks G and Matt as well (don't mean to slight anyone...).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Mike East:

yes, rrg - and you don't have to do any math
Avatar 3:14pm Bethany Ryker:

Hey, hi! We're off and running!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Matt from Springfield:

Hi OD! First Guinness is on me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Ike:

Hello! @rrg, the Friendship Society just started, so Irwin's next playlist will have avatars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm G:

@rrg: Yeah, the system was made live during Dark Night of the Soul last Weds, about 12 hours after Irwin's most recent show...
Avatar 3:17pm ranjit:

Party like it's 1964!
Avatar 3:18pm other david:

@Matt: this cannot end well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm rrg:

No math! Why did no one ever tell me this?

Oh, because it just started (thanks, Ike).

I'm in, so I'm the one-and-only rrg. Though I don't know whether forging remains an option for evildoers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Mike East:

is this Nicola Conte someone's bed music? or is it used on some WNYC promo spot? where have I heard this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm rrg:

He's not a slacker but he's often LATE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm rrg:

This is tied into Facebook and everything. Shall I ignore that or embrace it? So much to decide while listening to music from 1964.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Matt from Springfield:

@OD: It's a special occasion with Bethany here. Besides, as long as one only mixes musics with beer, we should be fine. Cheers! *clink*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Mike East:

i'm going with WNYC promo. I'm almost certain of it.
Avatar 3:23pm fakerrg:

we'll see.
Avatar 3:23pm other david:

Why do I suspect that the studio temperature will lead to another fascinating boiler story from Ken...
  3:23pm klp/kpl:

i wondr what HDT would think rigt this very minute
Avatar 3:23pm Sem Chumbo:

Nice work, Bethany: you drew a crowd but it is not pesky at all. Pretty good spectacle and clamour, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Matt from Springfield:

@Mike East: I definitely have heard it somewhere before--I s'pose it gets around.
Avatar 3:25pm fred:

@Matt from Springfield: I'm actually drinking a Guinness at this very moment
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm G:

@rrg: The only way for someone to get your name and be logged in is to guess/find your password.

When not logged in, someone could name themselves "rrg", but because they are not logged in users can see it's not you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm rrg:

With authenticated postings it would now be easy for Kenzo (or whoever's doing this) to implement the ability to delete or edit one's own comments. Correct one's own typos. Without having to bother the DJ.

So there's an up side to it all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Ike:

Irwin disappears at the same time as NYC getting its first "hot country" station in 17 years? This CANNOT be a coincidence!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm rrg:

Is there any way to tell that a commenter is logged in apart from the presence of an avatar in the comment?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm G:

Let's see. Hot Country today, last week Christian. 60 stations in the NYC area.

OK, I'll manage to live :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm G:

This is a test. I'm not really G, I'm really rrg pretending to be G. Exploring the limits of the WFMU Friendship Society limitation.
Avatar 3:29pm Droll:

RRG, Good question, we lurkers would love to know.

[ Welcome back to the air Bethany (and her doppelgänger during the 1st set)! ]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm G:

Your name is a live link to your profile when you are logged in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Caryn:

@rrg: if a commenter is logged in, you can click on their name to check out their profile
Avatar 3:29pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Tuning a bit late, hey one and all
Avatar 3:29pm other david:

@Ike: hold back judgement for now...unless of course they're running an Amanda marathon
Avatar 3:30pm Bethany Ryker:

@Matt from Springfield: Stochastic440!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm G:

@rrg: your post as G linked to your rrg profile. voila, transparency :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Ike:

@Other David, touché. But I'm sure the lizard men from Alpha Centauri are in on this somehow! They are secretly running that radio station, I just know it!
Avatar 3:33pm other david:

Howdy Sean - Matt's paid for the first round of Guinness :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm rrg:

All right, so I can pretend to be someone else (hi, G) but the linked name still goes to my profile. So, a modicum of accountability.

But I would have implemented this so that you can't use the name of another registered user. You still want to allow funny handles, but you want to prevent superficial forgery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm G:

@rrg: No one even needs to hit the link to your profile to see which profile posted a comment. Anyone can just mouse over the pseudonym to see which profile actually generated the comment.
Avatar 3:36pm danjoseph:

Greetings from south slope, great to hear you on the air again Bethany!
Avatar 3:37pm fred:

@rrg: I think that kind of forgery could get you banned, and the registration process requires a real email. Much harder than the old way
Avatar 3:37pm Bethany Ryker:

...yeah...you guys just talk amongst yourselves ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Matt from Springfield:

@Bethany: All right! I'm Stoched! 440x over!
Hey Sean! Only the first round, though :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Andrew Waterloo:

awesome set Bethany.. lots of yellow stars
Avatar 3:38pm other david:

@Ike: this fascination of yours with lizard men from Alpha Centauri is unhealthy and unrealistic - there are billions of galaxies, each with billions of stars - so what about THEIR lizard men, huh? Stop pinning everything on Alpha Centauri lizards, my brother in law is one & he doesn't even like hot country music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm G:

If I turn my ipod into a car, does my ipod's airbag deploy?
Avatar 3:39pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@other David,
Ales is my preferred drink, a bit of a real ale twat, the brews over in the US are tHe most marvellous beers known to mankind!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Matt from Springfield:

Do Galactic Lizardmen Dream of Hot Country?
Avatar 3:41pm glenn:

sean, you're kidding, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Matt from Springfield:

@Sean: Amber ales and India Pale ales? I loves them, myself.
Avatar 3:41pm other david:

ale fight!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm rrg:

Hey, Bethany, "Have I the Right?" by the Honeycombs is a song from 1964.

I'm just sayin'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Matt from Springfield:

@G: Is that a philosophy question? That's a good one, on form and function.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm G:

Irwin doing Bethany. What a kidder!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm G:

@Matt: *Every* question is a philosophy question, if you avoid taking it superficially. :)
  3:43pm Janitor:

I'm the real winner of any ale fight--the mops and bucket are MINE! :)
Avatar 3:44pm Sem Chumbo:

@Sean:I don't know, I'm thinking Galactic Lizardmen might fancy Old Peculiar?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Matt from Springfield:

To save money, let's ale fight from glasses already purchased--that oughta go well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Matt from Springfield:

True that, G :)
  3:47pm common:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm rrg:

Slide that pot down and slide the other one up.
Avatar 3:49pm Droll:

Bethany, If it's cold outside I typically leave my apartment, go down the stairs to the building exit, realize I forgot something, go back upstairs, and repeat that 2-3 times until I have everything. Plenty warm after that regime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm rrg:

Oh! I know this because Irwin played it a while ago.
Avatar 3:49pm other david:

@Bethany: when people favourite a song on your show - does it pop up/alert you, the DJ, in any way? I sort of hope not, lest it influence show direction and whatnot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Carmichael:

Hi everyone. And Hello Bethany!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm rrg:

You can "favorite" a song? Wow, you can.

This is too much to process in such a short time.
  3:51pm Itumac:

We call it 3 card monty.... I know the trick.... 100% chance of loss. It's a slight of hand
  3:51pm klp/kpl:

because all is available on th intrnt with the same level of prceptibility
doesnt mean they are equal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm G:

I often take a walk after I am done with (home-based) work. Not today. Forget it. Got dinner, and that's it. It's like 15 right now (that's minus 10, C peoples) and windy as hell, assuming hell is really windy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm G:

In central Brooklyn, that is.
Avatar 3:51pm northguineahills:

This Gavin Bryars has never been heard by me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm rrg:

other david said "favourite". That's a telltale.
  3:53pm Itumac:

Hahaha. they are explaining the trick!
Avatar 3:53pm other david:

I'm Irish, it's allowed rrg.. don't judge me!
Avatar 3:54pm glenn:

pssssh. minus 25 celsius in toronto today. (with wind chill)
Avatar 3:54pm MuttonChops:

I wish you had a regular spot on the WFMU schedule Bethany. :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Matt from Springfield:

I've heard this quartet-scored Three Card Monty track before--I like it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm G:

fave our it :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm rrg:

I'm almost the only one here without an avatar. I feel under-dressed.

But I have no idea what to use for an avatar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm rrg:

Not a judgement, other david. Merely an observation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Matt from Springfield:

@rrg: Virtually every other Anglo outside the U.S. spells it that way -- you're more the telltale by noticing :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm rrg:

Or should I have written "judgment"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm G:

Rob one off the interwebs, rrg. Get several for when you get bored with the first one. I yoinked my current one off google street view and cropped it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Matt from Springfield:

Now Re: your avatar, rrg: isn't your name "Ron"? You could allude to that with a Ron Burgundy or Ron Swanson pic. The possibilities are infinite! (And frequent, as G points out).
Swag For Life Member 3:57pm 12539:

This is radio, you're not supposed to be seen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm rrg:

Does anyone ever use, like, you know, an actual picture of himself? Or herself?

I wonder.
  3:58pm Listening Out There:

Izzy Stone...how would he like the news biz these days?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm G:

I have seen no picture here less than 30 years old from a listener. Tell me I'm exaggerating. :)
Avatar 3:59pm glenn:

ireland just made it legal to drink and rive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Stanley:

@G - so your connection with Harpenden in Hertfordshire, England is not quite what it seems? A picture of where you live?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm G:

My avatar du jour is the street where I lived in 1972-74

  4:01pm klp/kpl:

- flat on the screen for sure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm rrg:

Hey, you know, Bethany, Peter and Gordon's "World Without Love" is also a song from 1964.

I mean, as long as you're playing music from 1964.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Stanley:

@G - probably no different then as it is now, except there were no cars back then
  4:02pm Laura L:

On deadlines here, but how can I let go rrg's question about "judgment"--yes, no "e" after the "g" in the good old USA (as opposed to the good older UK). Hi Bethany--excellent show--thank you!
Avatar 4:02pm other david:

*wanders to google translate*

excusez-moi mon garçon, une autre série de votre meilleure bière, s'il vous plaît.
  4:02pm klp/kpl:

yea there are those deep "inaccessible" sources that you have to pay
now wer getting into something
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm rrg:

Not having to answer stupid arithmetic questions is so liberating! I can never go back to being anonymous. You'll always know it's me.
Avatar 4:03pm other david:

@glenn - we didn't make it legal here, I assure you. That was a local politician - from a clan responsible for the cheapest kind of politics making noise, that's all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm G:

Oh yeah, Moreton End Lane *totally* looked the same from Luton Road in the 70s. -- By contrast, in Brasil the place I lived in the later 70s is completely and utterly changed (the lot across the street was vacant then; I was out in the boonies past the car racing track at the outer edge of Sao Paulo)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Matt from Springfield:

@G: Nice street photo--makes me want to look at it to the tune of "Thick As A Brick".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm rrg:

Laura: I was raised to believe that the choice of "judgement" vs "judgment" was arbitrary, that both are correct.

I think that's MY telltale.
  4:05pm pierre:

(Commenting from phone, so no octopus right now..)

But really enjoying what's happening radio wise
Avatar 4:06pm other david:

(although there are a million other laws on our books in Ireland that make one rather embarassed to live here)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Ike:

@rrg @3:57, this avatar is actually me, from 3 or 4 yrs. ago. I may change it back to my cat though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Carmichael:

@ngh: I dig that passive voice back at 3:51.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm rrg:

G said "Brasil"!

That must mean something.
Avatar 4:07pm Bethany Ryker:

If there's anything I need to know in this stream of comments, can someone summarize? My hands are full, but as your loyal host, I want to make sure I am taking care of all of you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm cklequ:

These past few tracks have been amazing....
  4:09pm Laura L:

@ rrg, I have to delete it from "judgement" and "acknowledgement" in manuscripts all the time--it's a US vs. UK thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm rrg:

Bethany, it's a fine show. Also, "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" by Manfred Mann is another song from 1964.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Carmichael:

Rockin' the cross-dresser, Bethany!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm George of Troy:

Just tuning in... nice to have a fix of A440 this afternoon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm G:

re "Thick As A Brick": And I first heard that CD, oops I mean album, when I lived on that street. In fact, there was a very British-ethos Catholic boys school up the street where my younger brothers somewhat unhappily went. (I was old enough to be trusted to commute by train daily to the American School in London.)

But mainly in 72-74 I was buying small-run 45s that were on the American charts and barely released in the UK. The record store thought I was a preciously young DJ, but I was just keeping up with music by special ordering stuff off of the US charts that was not on the UK charts or radio at all...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm rrg:

Right, "acknowledgement/acknowledgment" is another one of those.

I confess that I prefer the shorter forms that we use here in the good old USA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Matt from Springfield:

There are "organised" "realisations" and other such S's instead of Z's in British/Commonwealth spelling, yet they still tend to put a Z in Elizabeth and Brazil.

Elisabeth and Brasil is a further preference, indicating a Continental Europe/outside Anglosphere perspective.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Mike East:

Bethany: really enjoying the set so far, especially the Sing Sing J Edgar.
  4:12pm pierre:

You're doing great Bethany !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Mike East:

@Matt - I use S for all of those. just cuz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm G:

Brasil is how they spell it in Brazil. They spelled it Brazil there a couple hundred years ago, I see it in old books in Portuguese. Bet we'll change to Brasil here, eventually!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Matt from Springfield:

Sounds cool G--Americans were doing the reverse with UK singles on their side of the Pond too!
I suppose you at the American School too late to know the guys from the band America?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm rrg:

Canadians tend to mix-and-match spellings, though they have a stubborn insistence on using "ou" forms (armour, favourite, rigour).
Avatar 4:14pm other david:

I confess that I don't really mind, either way. Although US media etc. seem to take it to extremes nowadays: why express a concept or historical event by using a few words, when you can reduce it to an 3 letter acronym...
Avatar 4:14pm Woo:

The math wasn't that hard. This is hard. I've had 3 passwords already.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Andrew Waterloo:

@rrg, I can second that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm rrg:

I can change, I can learn.

But I still say "Peking" and "Bombay".
  4:16pm Ken:

This has truly been wild for me. I am a long time listener. Incidently I have an old FBI file gained by my march-planning work with Martin Luther King in Chicago. The Dougherty piece summoned up for me the well-based paranoid feelings we all had about the FBI surveillance at the time - in the summer of '66. Thanks for the jolt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: Wonderful! Be different, be beyond British, be beyond Continental!
  4:18pm Denise in DC:

Figures. Y'all just start using avatars after I clean out all the bizarre images I had collected from Ken's playlists and stored on my computer.
Avatar 4:18pm hamburger:

top of the day / still forgotten to get on that postcard thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Matt from Springfield:

Thanks for sharing, Ken. Interesting to know the feeling of that piece was spot on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm rrg:

Cleaned them out? You had a treasure trove there. How could you?

Can you get them off a backup somewhere?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm rrg:

"Chicago Pro Musica" is Latin for "Chicago in favor of music".
Avatar 4:21pm Droll:

Ken, It says a lot that people today will gladly voluntarily fill Facebook with the same kind of information that in the 60's people considered a privacy invasion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm G:

@MfS: America broke on BBC radio (prior to US success) a few months after I moved there. All of us at ASL knew of them. They were actually military brats and had gone to a different US-curriculum school. But yeah we had plenty of fairly well-known actors'/actresses' kids at ASL. Wow, the day Linda Blair visited the school was a big day for the drama kids at ASL... And Elton John played the gym twice when he was gearing up to conquer the US as a rock act (rather than his previous milder approach)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm rrg:

Voluntarily makes all the difference.
Avatar 4:24pm Bethany Ryker:

@Mike East - you say "Kronos is coming here to rehearse Friday" Here where?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm G:

And meanwhile, we should all think about all the data that both companies and government entities are gathering about you now in the electronic era. That'll be the next great civil rights issue, once people realize how it really works and where it's going. There is nothing beneficent about the govt centrally gathering data to "help us".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm G:

I believe Mike works at a recording studio or similar from his comments over time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Mike East:

I work at a rehearsal studio in Manhattan.

Avatar 4:27pm Bethany Ryker:

Awesome! Tell 'em we love them over here at FMU!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Mike East:

no recording, G. just rehearsals. Although I record myself here sometimes, but I wouldn't recommend a client doing it except for demo purposes.

@ rrg: I still say Burma. Which longtime Irwin listeners all know is a place like Monkey Land.
  4:27pm Ken:

Droll, That fact has my head spinning these days. I watch my students post stuff that seems ill-advised, but now commonplace. No wonder NSA is having a field day sorting out our lives.

Scherzo AND Tarantelle! Joshua Bell always rocks, but thanks for clueing me into this Wienawski composition! Later 19th century?
Avatar 4:31pm kat330:

Hi, Bethany, Matt and all! Just a drive-by comment here: Thanks for the Bell track! :)
  4:31pm Mark:

Nothing to apologize for, I LOVE that you're rocking some violin
Avatar 4:33pm Droll:

Ken, NSA doesn't work domestically, you're thinking of DHS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Driving by on a Bell curve? :) Hey there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Mike East:

I will if they seem approachable. Some folks don't like to be bothered by the guy at the front desk, even they they are constantly bothering me: I need another music stand, I need another microphone, blah blah blah. Though I guess that's what I get paid for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm rrg:

There's still a phone there in the studio, right?
Avatar 4:34pm hamburger:

That Henryk Wienawski was a treat!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm G:

That's right, Droll. And Droll knows I know. :-) I'll answer your email later today, Droll. :-)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Matt from Springfield:

FBI is the domestic one. Not to say there aren't situations where it's legal for the NSA to go inside, and the FBI frequently goes outside as well.

DHS is a behemoth, though still not organized too well. The Borders/Immigration and Coast Guard are their biggest portfolios.
  4:38pm Ken:

Droll, don't believe it. The boundaries aren't so tidy....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Matt from Springfield:

@Mark: That's why I love Bethany. I also never heard of Wienawski despite liking Classical--the "new, old" composers we crave are found here!

"Lucky Seven" by Chris Squire (his 1975 solo album) in 7/8. Money by Floyd in 7 time. Old prog thing :)

Avatar 4:47pm Bethany Ryker:

Just got a call in the studio from a guy who asked me why I went from playing music to playing random industrial sounds. I disagree with that interpretation of the music, but at any rate... his desired effect of upsetting me was a total fail! Welcome to the world of sounds,! We're all doing just fine, thank you :)
  4:47pm Mark:

Oh I don't mind, I like a "challenge."
  4:48pm Mark:

Someone called yesterday around this time and asked Jason if the station played "like, a variety of music."
Avatar 4:48pm BSI:

By definition, industrial sounds have very specific purposes. Those would be the least "random" of all sounds. But hey, splitting hairs is what tiggers do best.

On one tour the New York Dolls were the opening act for Sly and the Family Stone.
Avatar 5:04pm hamburger:

@Ken - that reminds me of when I tried to explain to this guy why I would donate money to WFMU, His response was 'I don't need someone else to find music for me. I find all the stuff I like by myself' and I couldn't get the point across at how much more new things you could discover from WFMU that you couldn't anywhere else. ANYWAY. I don't talk to him any more.

I still miss the instrumental version of "Song of the Burmese Land" that used to be the outro to Irwin and Michelle Boule's Incorrect Music Show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Caryn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: "Burma" is much easier to say when you're panicked! At least in English :)
Yeah, I also don't take much stock in sudden name changes by a dictatorship.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Matt from Springfield:

@Denise: I like that song in general, and the fun synth cover of it. A few times Irwin has blessed us by digging that one out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Caryn:

@Matt: especially when the "panicked" yell is a complete ad lib. Still love looking at the expressions Chapman and Cleese have after the yell, trying to keep it together, both obviously thinking, "WTF was that?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm rrg:

Yesterday my random iTunes playlist turned up a track that I didn't know I had: "Judge Not" by the Cambridge Circus cast, 1963 sketch comedy that featured Cleese and Chapman among others.

Fantastic set Bethany
Avatar 5:29pm glenn:

Avatar 5:35pm Philo Gristle:

David, I bet you you're so Irish your blood is type O' (Brian Kiley told this recently, and kat reminded me).
Avatar 5:36pm northguineahills:

Jealous of Philo's culinary and fermented evening snacks, as I can't have much of the former, as my stupid GI tract doesn't make too much lactase.

(looks in fridge, sees crappy beer, but nice rosemary crackers and olive tapenade, that will have to do) (too early for whiskey)
  5:36pm Listening Out There:

I think that if Philo is going to discuss his food that he needs to share it with the rest of us. It's only fair...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm rrg:

I've been drinking tea since you started work this morning.
Avatar 5:37pm other david:

Droll, that'ss your mistake - you too should begin drinking at the start of work :)

@caryn Ramen hel-sync-e! US rye is pedestrian, I have to say. Hapankorppu finally available, as well as wasa nakkileipa. Woo-hoo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Caryn:

@PG: congrats on the korppu/näkkäri front!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Matt from Springfield:

In the US rye is a main seeded bread; but looking through the articles and pictures on Wiki, rye breads are a humongous deal in Finland. So many diff varieties!
Avatar 5:45pm Philo Gristle:

I get carried away on the caraway. And should say I've been very much enjoying this set from the moment I came home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Caryn:

There's now a rye bread with blueberries in it. Very interesting combo, but actually very nice.
Avatar 5:47pm kat330:

@Matt: I've stuffed the mini-peppers with a feta cheese concoction previously, and though that may be a bit tastier, the brie was a breeze to make and still good.
Avatar 5:47pm aaron in chicago:

damn son this track has hella grandeur
Avatar 5:47pm Philo Gristle:

@Matt McDonalds used to offer a ryeburger, I think, once upon a time. Never bought one, but still... used to make mini pizzas with black rye bread, ground beef, tomatoes and cheese.
Avatar 5:48pm kat330:

Love the organ, with tulips or not.

Question to all: Yo La Tengo with Calexico are at Louisville's Brown Theater next Tuesday the 29th. The ticket prices are at least within reason though still straining our budget. What are the pros that we should still go for it -- anyone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm rrg:

I would definitely try a McDonald's ryeburger if they offered one.
Avatar 5:49pm Bethany Ryker:

well...well....the desired effect WAS contrast, but a technical slip and we jumped to a different planet. Next time I'll make a more seamless transition from Communist Chinese Opera from 1964 and an early Philip Glass piece. Trust me!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Matt from Springfield:

Good idea both, kat.
Philo, I could see that being made someday as a "Northern Europe Pizza" - brown rye bread base and selection of meats and cheeses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Caryn:

@PG: actually, in Finnish McDonalds places, you can nowadays order any burger you want on rye bread instead of the regular bun. A friend who works there informed me. I told her that they should advertise that better, since it would be a selling point in Finland. But yeah, another friend called the McDonalds rye burger the "McSotta" (McMess for all you English-speakers), because it was incredibly messy to eat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm rrg:

Hey, some of you have "friends" in your WFMU profiles. How does that happen?
Avatar 5:51pm trish:

Bread? I introduced a cup of light rye to a french baguette recipe. Can't eat it without, now.

Nice to catch an A440
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Caryn:

Avatar 5:51pm glenn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Matt from Springfield:

@kat: YLT is...always fun, always inspires joy, never play a bad song, have covered Bonzo Dog songs in a side project...so yeah. Plenty of great things about YLT--what you'd really need is to compare that with whatever thing the income would otherwise go towards.
