Danny Kaye, BK represent.

How many degrees of separation between DK and Patti Page?

Well how come I don't see my comment updating, then?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Matt from Springfield:

Oh, there it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Matt from Springfield:

And the next one too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm G:

It refreshes on a timer, Matt
  3:07pm Listening Out There:

No, I don't see Matt's comment updating either...
  3:07pm Michael:

Bunch of Kaye stuff on TCM this weekend I believe. And Howdy Irwin.
  3:07pm rrg:

Danny Kaye has a Patti Page number of 2.

Danny Kaye was in

It's a Great Feeling (1949)

with Sandra Gould (I), who was in

Boys' Night Out (1962)

with Patti Page

We don't take kindly to tardiness round these parts whilst the board'sa-updating
  3:07pm Ike:

So, my cat is *really* good at spitting out her new medication. I'm reading that blowing air on her nose will encourage her to swallow the pills. Good grief.
  3:08pm Caryn:

Yay, Danny Kaye!

And whoa, that helicopter crashing into the construction crane...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm G:

You have to get practice at tossing the pill so far back down their throat they can't get it back up. Funfun
  3:08pm rrg:

Tickle its chin.

But who am I to give cat advice?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Matt from Springfield:

@Ike: Is it already mixed in food? Or is that why your cat is so "talented" at spitting it out?
  3:10pm DCE:

hello, orange.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm G:

I don't care what you hide it in, a pet feels it and gets it back out.
  3:11pm ADL:

Damon Albarn--underrated megastar.
  3:11pm Sean Daily:

All unattended children will be given a cappuccino and a .45. Thank you.
  3:12pm Ike:

No @MfS, I tried that and it only worked for 1 of the 3 pills. She is good at eating around things she doesn't like in her food. I might have to get a little pill shooter.
  3:12pm Caryn:

@ADL: he is a frigging genius, and definitely underrated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm G:

@SD: Is that in one of the executive orders?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Matt from Springfield:

Pill shooters! Maybe you can re-configure a disc shooter to point and shoot pills into her mouth!
  3:15pm Jess:

I too thought the dog was a burglar.
  3:15pm Ike:

@G@3:11, a few drops of any cooking oil in cat food prevents yakking, in my experience. Hope this works for meds too. Or I will coat the meds in butter maybe.
  3:15pm rrg:

Patti Page has a Danny Kaye number of 2.

Patti Page was in

Elmer Gantry (1960)

with Dean Jagger, who was in

White Christmas (1954)

with Danny Kaye
  3:15pm rrg:

  3:16pm Caryn:

Or just get a kids' pea shooter, put it in his mouth, and blow the pills down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm G:

@Ike: Good luck, Jim.
  3:16pm ADL:

Weird to listen to bands like Cool It Reba and realize Talking Heads wasn't sui generis (though I guess CIR is a little later).

@Caryn: Agreed on all counts! Interesting b/c he's mega popular in UK and popular (esp. via Gorillaz) here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm G:

excellent work, rrg, I figured a small #
  3:19pm Caryn:

@ADL: I think even in the UK he is more popular than he is truly appreciated for all his musical ability, as singer/songwriter/producer/musician/impresario.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Ah, like a straw and blow the pills out like peas (I guess we were more hi-tech by the time I was a kid...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Matt from Springfield:

Wow, 2 dead, 13 injured in the helicopter crash on the crane. 'It could have been many, many times worse'. Right by the Vauxhall Bridge and the Tube station--potential for casualties was even higher than it turned out to be.
  3:22pm Caryn:

@Matt: heh! Actually, a disc shooter could be useful, if we could make the cat think the meds are actually treats or insects to chase and eat. Shoot them out of the disc shooter and make him try to catch them. Make it a game a la "here comes the airplane" for kids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Matt from Springfield:

Right near MI5 and MI6 (crosswise the Vauxhall Bridge from each other). Reminded me of the scene in "Skyfall"...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm G:

He's gonna play Danny. Kaye?
  3:24pm rrg:

He's really 102? Lying son of a bitch!
  3:24pm seang:

shake yr butt
  3:24pm Mike East:

ha! My wife wanted to walk down the aisle at our wedding to this song.
  3:27pm Michael:

TCM Kaye Schedule:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: It gets the message across much better!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: That would be a fun game to watch too! Though maybe dogs would be more inclined to catch and jump into the air for the flying meds. Hmm...*brainstorm and implement*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Matt from Springfield:

Ah, the map shows the helicopter crash wasn't near the bridge or MI6 HQ. And I had mis-remembered: MI5 and MI6 are crosswise from each other, between the Vauxhall and LAMBETH Bridges. I forget about the Lambeth Bridge being there.
  3:32pm glenn:

i was at a great wedding once. first song was............ the chase is better than the catch, played by a polsih oompah wedding band, "stan swiatski and tiara" it was beyond the best thing ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Sir Winston:

The Lambeth Bridge is forgettable, but then again there's a lot to forget about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Matt from Springfield:

Glenn: I remember you saying that before! But you didn't mention that it was an Oompah band playing it! Awesomosity!!

Hey, this show is kinda eclectic... /irony
  3:51pm seang:

Hey Matt--Have you read his recent book--"Me, the Mob, and the Music"?--great stuff--he was on Spazz's show talking about it
  3:52pm DCE:

man I thought that sounded familiar!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Matt from Springfield:

Oh sweet, seang! Do you know the date of that show?
  3:53pm rrg:

Okay, I like it. How old are the kids? Are you going to make me actually go look at the YT video?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Matt from Springfield:

At least put the LINK to the YT in the playlist!
  3:54pm seang:

sure, April 15, 2010
  3:54pm Caryn:

PS22 have so many YT vids, rrg, that you could spend hours there. So just brace yourself.
  3:56pm Caryn:

I say the above as someone who had to go look for PS22 vids after seeing them talked about on tv. Some fantastic stuff on YT, people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Matt from Springfield:

Thanks seang!
Classic Irwin bed music! Love this one!
  4:00pm Droll:

Hoorah! Bethany's gets to sub for a 3 hour show! She needs a show again.
  4:03pm Caryn:

PS22's YT channel for Matt & rrg: http://www.youtube.com/user/agreggofsociety
PS22's web site: http://ps22chorus.blogspot.fi/
  4:04pm rrg:

All right, Caryn, why does PS22 have a Finnish Web site address?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm G:

  4:08pm Listening Out There:

I agree with Droll. I like A440, Bethany's show. Make it a podcast while you're at it. Hello? Ken F?!?!?
  4:08pm Caryn:

@rrg: don't ask me, I was wondering the same myself... Unless blogspot has some thing where the address changes according to the users' IP address, so you would get it as a .com?
  4:08pm rrg:

Aha, it doesn't. You're just so used to writing ".fi" that you did it here. But "blogspot.com" works as well. Or ".co.uk", or ".ca", etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm G:

I think Bethany said she moved out of state at least for awhile??? -- Yes, diversity of classical music is good. -- Which you don't get on the "name" classical stations any more. Kurt did a classical set last week, as he sometimes does..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Matt from Springfield:

And thank you Caryn as well!
I think if you looked it up from Finnish Google or other based site, it may have provided a domain name local to you, then rerouted to the .com one.
  4:12pm Droll:

rrg, That's an interesting observation about the TLD, thanks for pointing it out. I'll be sure to remember that for my next spoof!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Matt from Springfield:

Lovely demo!
  4:14pm Caryn:

@rrg & Matt: actually, I just clicked on the link they had on their YT channel, and it went there. If I type the address with .com, it reroutes to .fi, so I think blogspot reroutes all users to the domain name most local to your IP address.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Matt from Springfield:

Go, go, Jenny O!
  4:21pm rrg:

The behavior is going to vary depending on the local Google infrastructure (blogspot is a Google property). I see no explicit redirect at my end here in the New York area, no matter which TLD I use.
  4:22pm rrg:

What in the world is this album, Irwin? Something ELSE I have to get now?
  4:25pm Irwin:

Which one, rrg?
  4:26pm rrg:

Dear Nora. I think I found it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Matt from Springfield:

First time hearing Dear Nora--that was good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Matt from Springfield:

Just a reminder Irwin: Feb 4 will be the 30th anniversary of Karen Carpenter's death. Do a tribute that week!
  4:31pm Caryn:

Since we'll be celebrating Kaye on the show, the thought occurs to me: is there any music that would be suitable for celebrating the zamboni? (Today is the 112th anniversary of its' inventor, Frank Zamboni's, birth.)
  4:31pm rrg:

Jennifer Charles is so...breathless. That works on me.
  4:33pm rrg:

Mentioning Danny Kaye and the Zamboni in the same post violates the rules of conversation.
  4:33pm Irwin:

Elysian Fields at Le Poisson Rouge this Saturday night, if you're in the neighborhood.
  4:34pm Caryn:

@rrg: I suspect Danny Kaye could've easily performed a rapid-fire, humorous song about the Zamboni.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm G:

@Caryn: Baloney, honey!

  4:40pm Andrew Waterloo:

That explains today's Google Doodle
  4:40pm Laura L:

Thumbelina is the one I had too! Wore the grooves practically clean through the vinyl!
  4:40pm rrg:

If I said I remembered this, I would seem old.
  4:41pm Caryn:

@Mike East: weird to think Kaye was originally not supposed to be in that movie. If not for a mule...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha, was Danny singing with himself in that movie?
  4:44pm kham in urbana:

Ok I'm gonna say that the phrase "fabulous stick work" doesn't sound quite right on the radio.
  4:44pm rrg:

Remember DK introducing "The Wizard of Oz" on TV?

It might have been he who introduced it the first time it was shown in color on TV. But I'm not sure about that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm G:

Come on, rrg, it's only about 60 years old. That's only as old as early Caruso recordings when the Beatles were on Sullivan :)
  4:45pm Mike East:

@Caryn, I did not know that.
  4:45pm rrg:

Heh. He said "macaroon".
  4:48pm a:

as good as cole porter? lol
  4:48pm Caryn:

@Mike: yep. Originally, Crosby's 2-time co-star Donald O'Connor was supposed to play Kaye's role, but he caught a disease from his 4-legged co-star in the "Francis the Talking Mule" movies, and was bedridden, so Kaye was called in as a sub. Being a huge O'Connor fan, I'm a bit sad about that. But my love for Kaye's performance lessens the blow considerably.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm G:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Matt from Springfield:

Inspiration for Tom Lehrer's "Lobachevsky".
  4:49pm PMD:

I love Danny Kaye doing "Tschaikovsky".

  4:51pm rrg:

"When I was a Lad" (typo). This is nice, thanks. I just saw "Pinafore" in NYC a few days ago.
  4:51pm glenn:

when i first started playing hockey, lo these many years ago, they would clean the ice with a tractor with a plow in front and a big tank of hot water on the back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Matt from Springfield:

@G: Yep--I'm not so familiar with Gilbert & Sullivan works, but I'm sure they influenced many parodies and musical numbers for many years after.
  4:53pm Brett:

  4:54pm glenn:

matt, of course, you must know tom lehrer and the periodic table spoof?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54pm Matt from Springfield:

Incidentally, Tom Lehrer's "The Elements" was based on a Gilbert & Sullivan song as well.
  4:55pm glenn:

apparently so. :)
  4:55pm Mike East:

@Caryn - thanks for the funfact!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Matt from Springfield:

@glenn: Which I know because of Tom Lehrer! :) I've looked up the source of some Lehrer parodies, but haven't seen a performance firsthand of G&S.
  4:57pm Johnny Bigfoot:

I've always loved "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty". DK RIP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm Matt from Springfield:

Mr. Steinberg!! What a prolific singer, how many projects and styles does he have, how many albums self-released!
  5:05pm Mike East:

yay, more ween! It must be Weensday!
  5:05pm rick from SC:

Wow, another Ween song. two in one day. woohoo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm Matt from Springfield:

Bananas and Blow -- that will make one juiced-up Banana Smoothie! Even Amanda will not understand your ramblings after taking that!
  5:08pm rrg:

So far the only typo I can find in today's playlist is "When I Was Lad" (instead of "When I Was a Lad").

And no preps/caps problems at all--that I've noticed.

Oh, wait: I think it should be "Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers" instead of "Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers", because "The Jazz Messengers" is an entity on its own.

But i haven't consulted with LL about that.
  5:09pm rrg:

Ween were produced by Kramer, weren't they?
  5:09pm Irwin:

@Rick: It's Two For Tuesday Wednesday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Matt from Springfield:

@rrg: Actually that would depend on whatever the band bills themselves as. If they use all lowercase, or in a style contrary to MLA/APA guidance, they're stuck with it. Whether an intentional misstyling or just not knowing the difference, that's how it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Matt from Springfield:

@Irwin: Two For Tuesday Ween's Wednesday!
  5:12pm rrg:

Not sure I agree with that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Matt from Springfield:

@rrg: In my iTunes libraries, I leave band and song titles the way they were kept: sometimes Every First Letter In A Title Is Capitalized. Other times It's the Accepted Idea of not Capitalizing Prepositions, Conjunctions and Other Things of Which I'm not Sure.

However, all lowercase is so annoying on my eyes, so I manually capitalize at least the first letter in the whole song title.
  5:18pm Droll:

I agree with Matt: If the band uses "The", it's part of the proper name. If only British radio announcers use "The", it's not part of the full proper name.
For example, it is Led Zeppelin, not The Led Zeppelin for the same reason Matt Johnson's band is not The The The.
"The" is part of the name.
  5:19pm Laura L:

@ rrg--yes, he's doing well today. But I see an uppercased "From" in "Third Trio From..." And is the Cool It Reba album title really that way? Of course "Pinafore" should be italicized but probably no can do italics on the playlist system. If The Jazz Messengers is an entity of its own, good argument for cap "The," yes indeed.
  5:19pm glenn:

don'T bE hatiN' oN thE lowercasE, yO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Matt from Springfield:

Patience-testing piece here from Nick Brooke, but he's got a lot of ideas going on.

But, every Wednesday is Sunday (according to Tom Carvel)

  5:22pm rrg:

I'm not arguing "The Led Zeppelin" vs "Led Zeppelin". I'm saying "Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers" rather than "Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Matt from Springfield:

Whoa - that was the first time I typed my moniker all lowercase. I feel tiny, in a large and vast universe.
  5:23pm Carmichael:

Patience being tested.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: And vacuum being run, I'm sure. Irwin's not hearing what he played!
  5:24pm Irwin:

  5:25pm Irwin:

@Matt: I love that Nick Brooke album. It's wonderful and full of surprises. Listened to the whole thing at home while cookin' din.
  5:25pm Droll:

You don't understand Nick Brooke because it's music from the future. Specifically, it's scheduled for release 01/29/2013.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Matt from Springfield:

Duhhhhhhhh editorial style.
  5:26pm rrg:

I also think that the fact that cap conventions are routinely ignored in song titles as printed in liner notes--mostly due to apathy or ignorance--is not a convincing argument that the way the band renders it is correct or "official".

The band name, well, that's a different argument.
  5:26pm Irwin:

What Droll said. I'm two weeks ahead of my time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Matt from Springfield:

@Irwin: Did you also cook dinner in the future while listening to the future-album? How will it taste?
  5:28pm glenn:

if it's good enough for e.e. cummings, it's good enough for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Matt from Springfield:

The Bubblegum Graveyard is opening! Bubblegum Zombies return to the airwaves!
  5:28pm rrg:

In fact, I run everything I import into my iTunes library through a script called "Proper English Title Capitalization". Unless it's not English, or it's archaic or medieval or something like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Matt from Springfield:

@rrg: Okay, now you're just being pathetic! ;)
  5:30pm rrg:

  5:30pm glenn:

i'm bettin' that doesn't work so well, with the erkin koray or rock khong khoy titles.
  5:31pm Laura L:

Uh-oh, Irwin's getting irritated by what's only The Essential Guide for Writers, Editors, and Publishers. What rrg said at 5:26. And 5:30 too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Matt from Springfield:

That Jewish Diction from New Jersey...
Interesting link to "Border Blasters" for Nick's concept.
  5:37pm Carmichael:

@Laura: if you followed the guide correctly, you wouldn't have put a comma after "Editors". Right?
  5:38pm Alison Porchnik:

Hey from the Central Valley where I'm streaming on my iThing and encountering too many buffering problems to understand what's going on.
  5:38pm rrg:

Note: This playlist is still being updated.
  5:39pm Irwin:

Alison, shall I delete two of those? It's kinda funny, considering the "buffering problems."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Matt from Springfield:

Well if it's Chicago style...don't they call the comma before "and" an "Oxford comma" or something like that? I used to put commas after everything until I was taught you don't put one before an "and".
  5:39pm rrg:

Hey, I got your comma right here.
  5:39pm tinaun:

is this being played faster than normal?
  5:40pm Carmichael:

Which Central Valley, Allison? I'm living in one, out here in California.
  5:40pm green mountain man mark:

Didn't what's his name from the Flaming Lips recently get in trouble for bringing a grenade on a plane?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Matt from Springfield:

@tinaun: Or are you in fact listening faster than normal?
  5:40pm tinaun:

yes. it was non functioning, though. and solid gold.
  5:40pm paul:

yeah but I think it was a fake grenade or something
  5:41pm rrg:

Those iThings are always buffering badly. I think it's a problem with the WFMU iThing app.
  5:41pm Laura L:

@ Carmichael, I would always put that comma there--it's the serial comma, and it's what is printed on the book's cover. See section 6.18 in CMS.
  5:41pm MenfussMike:

yea, what a dumbass
  5:41pm glenn:

he gets in trouble for doing dumb stuff fairly regularly. they still make good music.
  5:42pm Alison Porchnik:

@Carmichael, Yes, the CA one. Winters, to be exact. It sure is cold here!
  5:42pm tinaun:

can't wait for "the terror" but yeah, he has been rather insane lately
  5:42pm Droll:

[Making the holy punctuation gesture before opening his bible to section 6.18, for the recitation of the serial comma]
  5:43pm MenfussMike:

flaming lips peaked years ago. their latest material is gawd awful compared to 20 years ago.
  5:43pm Alison Porchnik:

Yes Irwin. I think I'll stop posting now to save you any more trouble.
  5:44pm rrg:

I'm almost sure that AP is doing this on purpose. What a kidder.
  5:45pm Irwin:

AP: All fixed. Keep posting.
  5:46pm rrg:

And with Irwin removing all the duplicates my remarks will mean nothing to the people of future.

People of the future: originally AP's remarks appeared multiple times in a row, you see.
  5:47pm Carmichael:

You live Winters?!? Ha! I have lived in Sacramento and Woodland for about 40 years. Just went to The Buckhorn (not the Buckhorn) last week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Matt from Springfield:

I want to sing "Listen The Snow Is Falling" when I hear this nice bed music :)
  5:51pm Carmichael:

Just kidding Laura. I have a couple of English degrees, and I'm a bit pedantic about that stuff. Mrs. Carmichael, however, utilizes the AP style guide (or whatever it's called), much to my chagrin and occasional bemusement.
  5:52pm Alison Porchnik:

Thanks Irwin and rrg for the moral support. Carmichael, I live in Brooklyn but I'm visiting my mom here. Spent my formative years in Davis. Which is why I've lived in NYC for 20 years. I do love Winters, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Matt from Springfield:

Sounds like "I like my baby's poodle"! Which, I think implies the same thing!
  5:53pm rrg:

If you can call Brooklyn NYC.

Kidding! I'm kidding.
  5:54pm Irwin:

LL & RRG: Spanish -- first word cap only, right?
  5:54pm Droll:

rrg, Don't forget archive listeners will never see Irwin's original butchering of the English language on the Accuplaylist, and wouldn't even be aware of the humiliation due Irwin unless you and Laura mentioned it in here.
Now that I've pointed that out, I'm sure Irwin will start editing your comments as well.
Oh memory hole, I'm glad you still exist.
  5:54pm Carmichael:

@Alison: I thought you were from the NY area, which is why your post surprised me. I went to UC Davis and worked there for about 10 years after. Winters is cool, in a Mayberry kind of way.
  5:54pm Sara Lee:

catchy tune. i need a new jingle.
  5:55pm tinaun:

nice stuff
  5:55pm rrg:

That's what i do in my iTunes but I never sought advice on the matter. Which I must do.
  5:56pm green mountain man mark:

imagine if NYC started to annex all sorts of land around it. Parts of Connecticut, PA. Even all the way up to Vermont.
  5:56pm Sara Lee:

Do I even make pudding?
  5:56pm rrg:

And French. I only capitalize the first word plus other words that would ordinarily be capitalized, like proper names.
  5:57pm Laura L:

One foot out the door, late to meet somebody, so later for the Spanish, but I believe that is correct, Irwin.
  5:57pm rrg:

I love pudding, as long as we're talking about it.
  5:58pm rrg:

And pie.
  5:58pm rrg:

What, that's it, three hours already?
  5:59pm Alison Porchnik:

This Mayberry has really nice people, good food, and a great music venue.
  5:59pm Carmichael:

Now what are we gonna do?!
  5:59pm Carmichael:

The Palms. Yep.
  5:59pm rrg:

Thanks, Mr. C, and à bientôt, persons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Irwin!
Have a good night, peoples!
  6:01pm Caryn:

Speaking of proper grammar and punctuation, we got our university grammar books for a reduced price, because the word "grammar" was misspelled on the book's cover. Hah!
